James Kays of Missouri RE filling in the holes

Hello james. My name is James Kays, I live in Missouri. I received your rootsweb postings yesterday. I have always thought that I might be related to the NJ. Kays but like everyone else have never been able to prove it. My Kays line came to america probably in 1730 but not proven. My line settled in Pennsylvania then moved to Kentucky and on to missouri. I have always thought that I might be related to John Kays 1737 from Edinburgh or his younger brother name unknown.
I have taken a DNA test but no one from the NJ. Kays line has taken the DNA test. If I were related to your line the DNA test would prove it. The test does not require Blood samples just simple mouth swabs. The test is a little expensive but if it helps solve the mysteries of the Kays clan it would be well worth it. If you are any of your line is interested in the DNA test, just go to familytreedna.com and you will find all the info on the test.

Siblings? Etc. I think i have a double entry. This would be extremely helpful because I have a few kays names floating around without a link.

Also Anthony kays, who were his parents?

Y-DNA Testing: George Kays/Mary (Polly) Huffman & George Kays/Letty Hamilton
Y-DNA testing suggests that the George Kays who married Mary (Polly) Huffman was probably NOT related (at least via the direct male line) to the George Kays who married Letty Hamilton.

My ancestor, George Kays, is believed to have been born between 1770-1775, possibly in Pennsylvania. George married Mary ("Polly") Huffman in Lincoln County, Kentucky, on 4 April 1795. George was an early settler on Canoe Creek in Garrard County, Kentucky, and died near Bryantsville, Garrard County, Kentucky, in 1817. I descend from this George Kays, through his son Jesse.

My understanding from some researchers of the George Kays/Letty Hamilton line is that this older George Kays was born around 1750-1760, likely in Pennsylvania, and died in 1820-1821 in Monroe County, Kentucky. He married Letty (Leticia/Lettice?) Hamilton, and it is surmised this couple may be the George "Case"/Letti Hamilton who married in York County, Pennsylvania on 6 Oct 1778 at First Reformed (Trinity) Church in York. This couple is believed to have owned land on Sugar Creek in Lincoln (later Garrard) County, Kentucky, in the 1780s and 1790, and to have later migrated to land near Skaggs Creek in Green (later Barren and later still Monroe) County, Kentucky.

Via Y-DNA testing, a group of fellow KAYS researchers is exploring whether the George Kays (m. Mary (Polly) Huffman) line is related to George Kays who married Letty Hamilton. While the testing is not yet complete, a comparison of (i) Y-DNA testing for two known male descendants of our Kays/Huffman line with (ii) a very recent Y-DNA test by a direct descendant of the Kays/Hamilton line (based thus far on 37 markers), suggests my George, who married Mary (Polly) Huffman, is NOT closely related to the George Kays who married Letty Hamilton.

In fact, the 67 marker testing from our Kays/Huffman lines revealed a haplogroup of G2, while the test results just received from a Kays/Hamilton descendant reflect a haplogroup of I1a -- i.e. an entirely different "branch" of the genetic "tree." According to FTDNA, the I1a haplogroup is believed to have originated in Northern France, and is said to be found most frequently today in the Viking/Scandinavian populations of Northwest Europe. By contrast, also according to FTDNA, the G2 haplogroup is believed to have originated in India or Pakistan, and is today found predominantly throughout Europe and the Middle East.

Based on the testing of the KAYS/HUFFMAN descendants, very close matches do exist with folks of the names KEY and KAY of Lancashire and Yorkshire in Northwest England, and with various individuals who reside in Ireland. The testing also suggests that those of us who descend from George KAYS/Mary (Polly) HUFFMAN are somehow distantly related to Robert KAY, b. ca 1725 King George County, Virginia, d. 1808 South Carolina; a John KEY, born in England about 1630, died in Virginia; and a George Washington KEY who was born about 1820 in Philadephia, Pennsylvania. I would be thrilled to hear from anyone who could help ascertain the connections between our KAYS(Huffman) line and these individuals.

Additionally, it would be very helpful to find another KAYS descendant of George/Letty to confirm more conclusively the information revealed by our initial testing of a KAYS/HAMILTON descendant, and would also be intriguing to test descendants of Charles KAYS/CAYS and Betsy Clark to determine whether they are close cousins. We need males who are direct descendants along paternal lines of either George Kays/Letty Hamilton or Charles Kays (Cays)/Betsy Clark.

Best wishes to all with their research!

Tanya Curtis

Cousin Ted sent me the names of sources (not page numbers) for the DAR/SAR membership on the Rev War service of John Kays. One is General Stryker's list of New Jersey men who served (already checked online -- nope), the other is John Frost's Life of Washington. I found John Frost's book on ancestry.com and did a search. Nope. Next step, I guess, is to write the DAR and get them involved.

General Stryker's Official Register of the Officers and Men of New Jersey in the Revolutionary War was one of the sources used by the DAR to confirm John Kays's service in the war. In the list online I can't find John Kays. There's a John Case, but he was from Morris County, not Sussex. Then again, another source on ancestry.com that tells about John's grandson William T. Kays (John Kays's son Samuel's son)says John Kays was with Gen. Montgomery in the battle for Quebec. He was there "when Montgomery fell, mortally wounded". The bio says Samuel was an iron founder. I got the impression he was a farmer. Anybody know the facts here?

I have somewhere in my files at home a copy of the DAR applicaton for one of my relatives. I think it relies on the membership of another relative. I bet what the DAR required for proof of service is different from what it used to be. According to the Cyclopedia there's a monument that mentions him (and Lafayette, and Washington) in Hamburg, N.J. erected by a granddaughter ("Marchioness" Mrs. Hugh McLaughlin of Brooklyn), member of the DAR in 1912. I can also email my cousin about him. Cousin Ted was thinking about joining the SAR (riiight) and I believe has more info than I do. Should have thought of him first. I'll let you know what I find out. C.

Yes, I thought you needed documented proof, too. Wouldn't it be in the files of the war pensioners? Esp. as John Kays is described as an aide-de-camp to General Washington. I have looked at a source on ancestry.com -- a published history about Kays and others with almost a full page about Kays (The Cyclopedia of American Biography by James Wilson, published in 1918), but all I see there is stories told by his children. (Does that qualify?) Kays was a weaver by trade, and raised by Quakers. I find it hard to believe he had any skill with a musket or other arms used in the R.W. Thanks for your reply and please let me know if you find anything more than anecdotal.

my immigrant Kays ancestor. A bunch of family members going back some generations were members of the DAR/SAR based on his Revolutionary War service. Looking at the records, I don't see it. I don't see him in Conrad Gunterman's New Jersey company, even. I'm beginning to think his service is bogus, esp. when you consider that this guy was not rich, supported himself, his wife, and four kiddies as a weaver during the Revolutionary War.How could he have been G.Washington's aide-de-camp? Does anybody out there have any sources for John Kays's service to the country?

I believe that my Kays line is Cherokee, but I do not yet know how. Any help would be appreciated. Some names are Sarah Jane Kays Hayes b. in 1850s or 1860s in IL. She is the daughter of Washington D. Kays b. 1816 in KY and Elizabeth "Lizzie" Rodgers b. 1816 in TN or IL. Siblings of Sarah Kays were Elizabeth "Lizzie" Kays Gill born in 1850s or 1860s, George b. 1870, John b. 1872, and Myrtle E. Kays b. 1875. We have not been able to find out much on Washington D. Kays or Elizabeth Rodgers Kays. By the way, Sarah Jane Kays Hayes named one of her daughters Maggie Hayes, so maybe there was a Maggie Kays somewhere in the line.
Thanks.

Hello Karen:

First, let me clarify that I cannot definitively link your family of Richard Kase to my direct ancestor, George Jesse Kaze (sorry that I did not make that clear in my original posting), however since they lived so close together and shared the same surname, etc. I consider it worth trying to determine if there is a connection.

Secondly, do you subscribe to Ancestry.com? If not, if you will send me your e-mail privately, I will e-mail some of their images on your Kase line that I think may be of interest. My e-mail is robert21003@cox.net. If you are not comfortable sending me your e-mail, merely respond on this board and I will reply here. Specifically, the images of the 1900 census for Richard and Sarah and their 7 living children (1 had died) and the KY death certificate for the son of Wm. and Mary Lou Corbin Kase, Richard Kase who died at age 18, on 10 Aug 1927, and other items.

According to my "Index of the Frankfort Cemetery, 2005" and the book published by the KY. Genealogical Society in 1988, "Frankfort Cemetery...in Kentucky" the following members of your family are buried there:
Kase, Chester D., section M, lot 133.5, grave 1, interred 12/28/1951, died 12/26/1951, age 44, male, married, no gravemarker.
Kase, Mary Corbin, section Q, row 45, grave 16, interred 8/15/1944, born 12/18/1890, died 8/13/1944, age 57, female, married, page 396.
Kase, Paul, section O, row 20A, grave 14, interred 05/07/1934, no gravemarker.
Kase, Richard, section U, row 13, grave 5, interred 6/17/1950, born 03/10/1863, died 6/15/1950, age 80, male, married, page 485.
Kase, Richard, section Q, row 1, grave 15, interred 8/12/1927, no gravemarker.
Kase, Sarah Bell, section U, row 13, grave 6, interred 10/19/1950, born 8/29/1868, died 10/17/1950, age 82, female, married, page 485.
Kase, William, section U, row 22, grave 22, interred 10/03/1953, born 8/29/1885, died 10/03/1953, age 68, male, page 488.
The page no. reference are for the book "Frankfort Cemetery...in Kentucky"
More later,
Virginia Perry Cox

Franklin Co, KY: William KAYS (KASE or KAZE) (abt 1875 - 1935) & wife Lucy Harrigan(born abt 1899)

I would like to contact anybody researching William "Willie" Kays (also spelled Kase and Kaze and Kayes at different sources). Hoping to locate information on his descendants and parents, siblings, etc. I am descended from George Jesse Kaze, whom I believe to be William's brother.
Here is what I have about William:

According to the 1920 US census of Franklin Co, KY:
William KASE was aged 45 (so born about 1875, born KY, both parents born KY), white male, married, living with his wife Lucy (age 21, born KY) and three children: Lou R. Kase(daughter, age 4 yrs 5 mo, so born about 1915), James W. Kase (son, age 1 yr 10 mo, so born about 1918) and son Christopher C. Kase (age 0/12, so born about 1920).

According to the 1930 US census of Franklin Co, KY:
William KAYS was aged 52 (so born about 1878, born KY), white male, divorced, living with his two sons: James Kays (age 14, so born about 1916) and Christopher Kays (age 11, so born about 1919).

According to KY Death Records:
William Kaze, white male, divorced, died 24 October 1935 in Frankfort, Franklin Co, KY. Cause of death was influenza and subsequent lobar pneumonia. Buried 25 Oct 1935 in Greenhill Cemetery, Frankfort, KY. The informant on his death certificate is listed as "Mrs. Geo. Kaze" (my direct ancestress Sarah Elizabeth "Lizzie" Parker, wife of George Jesse Kaze). Unfortunately, "don't know" is listed for his age, date of birth, birthplace, parents & their birthplaces (the ignorance on these facts of Mrs. Kaze is understandable -- by this time her husband George had been deceased for 3 years).

According to KY birth records:
Vol.58, cert # 28762 (1915): Daughter Louise R. Kase was born 18 June 1915 to mother Lucy Harrigan.
Vol. 3, cert #1351 (1918): Son James W. Kase was born 18 June 1918 to mother Lucy Harrigan.
Vol. ____, cert# ______ (1922): Son Cecil F. Kazer (sic) was born 03 Nov 1922 to mother Lucy ________(sic)
[Note: no birth record has yet been located for son Christopher C. Kase).

According to KY death records:
Cecil F. Kays, born 03 Nov 1924, Franklin Co, KY, and died 03 Nov 1924 in Oldham Co, KY

According to KY death records, Vol 35, cert #32043:
James W. Kays, born 18 Jan 1918, died 03 Dec 1984, age 65, residence Franklin Co, KY, burial Greenhill Cemetery, Frankfort, KY.

According to KY death records, Vol 48, cert #23924:
Christopher Columbus Kase, age 29, born 01 Jan 1922 Franklin Co, KY & died 06 Nov 1951 in Danville, Boyle Co, KY at the Kentucky State Hospital of pulmonary tuberculosis, after a 4 year stay. His normal place of residence listed as Wilkinson Street, Frankfort, KY, father unknown, mother Lucy Ellis (so perhaps she remarried?), buried Greenhill Cemetery, Frankfort, KY. Listed as single, never in armed forces.

Does anybody have any further information on these people? What happened to the daughter Louise R. Kase?

Re: Filling the holes in my Kays fills...please read....

I requested information from the Mifflin Co. Historical Society, and they did a very good job. The James Kays that you mentioned was my great-great-great grandfather. They sent me information on him, but they also sent me quite a bit on John. I'll give you the most salient points here, but I do have more information. It's too much information to type out on a forum like this, so if you're interested in seeing the documents that they sent to me, I could possibly fax them to you or work something else out. Just let me know.

Below is some of the information:

John Kays

Born: ca. June 1820
Died: 8/3/1888 at his home, Granville, Mifflin Co., PA
Int.: St. Mark's Episcopal Cemetery, Lewistown, PA
Parents: Father not identified/mother assumed to be Margaret (Keys) Rittenhouse (1803-1857), wife of Jacob Rittenhouse and sister of John Kays, Sr., of Granville Twp., Mifflin Co., PA
Married: ca 1846/1847 to Isabella Cupples

Isabella Cupples

Born: March 1820
Died: 2/25/1903 in Lewistown, PA, at home of son John C. Kays
Int.: St. Mark's Episcopal Cemetery, Lewistown, PA
Parents: Father: James Cupples (1788-1875) of Derry Twp.

Summary

No record found to identify the father of this John Kays who lived for most, if not all, of his life in the Granville Twp. area of Mifflin Co., PA. He is almost certainly the nephew John Kays, Jr., mentioned in the will (1848) of John Kays, Sr., of Granville Twp., who identifies his nephew as the son of "my sister Margaret Rittenhouse." If his mother was the Margaret Keys (1803-1857) who married, 1825, Jacob Rittenhouse (1801-1886) [as mentioned in an 1897 biographic sketch of their son, Samuel Rittenhouse], then he would have been born while she was still single. Her brother, John Kays, Sr., probably took his nephew to raise, and the male (aged 5-10 years) living in the John Keys household (1830 census - Derry Twp.) may be assumed to be this John Kays (1820-1888) of Granville Twp.

John Kays was a farmer and acquired several tracts of land in the area of Granville Twp. where the village of Granville is located (south of the Juniata River). A parcel of land from his holdings was acquired by church trustees for the erection of Gruber Chapel in that area about 1853.
Some points to consider:

1. You can't join DAR/SAR without documented proof of lineage. Someone had/has to have something.
2. The reference to General Washington's aide comes from a published book. I can post the details when I'm at home and have my research in front of me. I'm pretty sure I have a copy of the passage.
3. Weren't most people in the Rev War nothing more than farmers, etc? I don't think economic status really mattered then. It was, after-all, a revolution.

I'm going to forward your message (as I am also curious if there is more proof out there) to the Sussex County mailing list and see if any of those people have something.

Regards,
Brian

Here's a crazy thought, but I have gone straight to SAR's website. You can request a record search for particular people for $10.
I'm thinking about doing it. I think this would prove it, wouldn't it?
They say they'll send the latest application on file, so if some grandchildren or great grandchildren applied, the proof of lineage would be provided for us with this search.
