John Kearns - Stamford, CT

John Kearns, who died last night on Meadow Street, was one of the oldest and best-known inhabitants of that section of the town. He was for many years employed as a coachman by the late Commodore Garrison of New York, who at one time had a summer residence in Stamford. Mr. Kearns saved money, carefully investing it in real estate, until in his old age he had sufficient to retire from active labor. He was a bachelor and had three brothers, two of whom live in Stamford and one in the West. The funeral will be held from St. John's R.C. Church tomorrow at 9am.

(Source: 9/7/1894 issue of The Stamford Advocate)

Edward Kearns born abt 1812 Ohio

I am looking for information about Edward Kearns born about 1812 in Ohio. He was married in or around the 1830's. In the later 1830's they moved to Illinois. With his first wife he had several children starting in 1835 named Neri, Elizabeth, Patrick, Emily, Joseph, Rebecca, and Joan. He married a second lady named Mary about 1849 and had Margaret in 1850. He then married a third wife named Mary Sparks, or Starks, Sparky or Starky (hard to read on death certificate). With this wife he had Edward A (1853), Nancy Ann, James Freemont, Alice, and Albert L (1861). In 1860 he is living in Denton, Texas.
I have quite a bit of information on his children, but none on his parents or siblings, or on any of his wives. Anyone who links up to this line please write, I am more than happy to share the information I have found. Several of the Kearns family married into my Coats line.

I have been plowing through the records, find the name spelled Kerns/Kearn/Kerne ~ found a record for Henry Kerns, land purchase, 1831, west of the Miami. Looked at Miami website and found 3 records listed there; will, probate, and death, I think they were. Might be interesting to look into this??

http://www.pcdl.lib.oh.us/miami/resultk.cfm
Where I found Henry

http://www.pcdl.lib.oh.us/miami/miami.htm
Second one is main page
If you don't get what you are looking for, try just the last name, tricky ;]

E-mail: AWhim@aol.com, Linda

Thanks for the history; there is a similar one for Wayne, IN, written about Uriah Notestine, Jacob's and Barbara's third child. It mentions Barbara's father BUT DOESN'T NAME HIM!!!
I think some of the LDS submitters have the Fairfield and Preble families mixed up. Still need a lot more info to show where the errors are, but I'm sure that one of Barbara's nephews has been placed in the wrong family ~ his obit puts him in Elizabeth Niswonger's family.
Do you know which of the Kerns brothers was Barbara's husband?
Linda

1

Thanks for your info. I never thought of Barbara having 2 Marys. I know they called the first Mary, Polly. I have no record of Polly or Henry Kerns moving with the Notestines to Fort Wayne. Henry was born about 1803 and Polly was born about 1805, so maybe they stayed in Ohio. I have never looked there. I am assuming Barb and her Kerns husband moved to Fairfield Co. OH from PA, where he died or they divorced. I looked up Henry Ward Beecher (the famous one) he is about 10 years younger than our Henry. So I wonder why our Henry got that name?? Always more questions.

According to LSDS Barbara's father was Peter Gunder Sr. (born 1761) Her mother was Susan. They married about 1786 in York Co. PA. Right Place, about the right year, I don't know if this info is correct. It is my experience that LSDS records are only about 50% right. I didn't know about Elizabeth. I wouldn't know about Poly and Henry if it wasn't for a distant cousin. The distant cousin said William Gunder came from Darke Co. OH to IN to buy land. I know he bought the land in Cedar Creek Twp. Allen Co. IN that Jacob Notestine later settled on. In 1860 a William Gunder owned 320 acres of land in Jackson Twp., Allen Co. IN. He must of been a land wheeler dealer.

Here is some info I found a while back, but didn't explore:

HISTORY OF FAIRFIELD COUNTY OHIO

BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCHES:

KERNS, GEORGE, of Amanda, came with his father, Jacob, from

Lancaster county, Pennsylvania, in 1812. Jacob settled seven miles southwest of Lancaster, on the Zane's trace, where Jacob Kerns, Jr.,now lives. This was the old State road, and the route from Kentucky to Pittsburg and on East. The place was also used as a hotel, where thousands were entertained by the hospitality of this man. Jacob Kerns
had twelve children, eleven of whom raised families of their own ; three boys and five girls are living at this writing. George Kerns lives in Amanda; Henry four miles west of Amanda; Jacob is living on the homestead. George Kerns, Sr., who came to Ohio with Jacob, settlednear Sugar Grove, but lived only a few years. John and Christopher Kerns, brothers of Jacob and George, came, to Ohio a few years afterward. Also, two sisters, Mrs. John Rockey and Elizabeth Murry.

Mr. George Kerns, now a retired resident of Amanda, has been a lifelong and an official member of the Old Sweyers' church. His son, H.W., lives on the homestead property.

Thanks so much for all the info. I have much to search now.

Toni

So pleased to see your message on the board. I have been trying to determine why submitters have given Barbara Gunder's name as Kearns.
No one mentioned a marriage prior to Jacob Notestine.

Barbara is the sister of Peter, William, and Elizabeth Gunder; however I have not been able to determine who their father was. I have been trying to sort out the Fairfield and Hocking lines; I'm sure the Gunders in Preble are the right family for my search. Several of the lines moved to IN about 1834, but the early censuses only give head of household's names.

Anyway, if you know who Barbara's father was, please let me know.

Jacob and Barbara had 15 children, the last was a Mary, 1832/34, so I'm assuming that Mary Kerns didn't live to adulthood?

Thanks for any help you can give.
Re: Kahlo/Kalo Tangle in Defiance Co., OH

I'm hoping that enough years have passed since the last posting in this "string" that some of you Kearns researchers have untangled the Kahlo/Kalo relationships in Defiance Co., OH, 1860 Census. I have been working on a file of Descendants of Charles Kahlo, b. 13 Feb 1818, Konigsreich, Prussia (Ger)and his wife, Amelia Grube, b. 19 Oct 1828, Miendorf, Ger. They emigrated in Spring 1851 and are found with their 3 children, Meta Amelia (1851,) Joseph J. (1857) & Charles John Kahlo (1860) in the 1860 Census, Defiance, Defiance Co., OH. (Mabel Florence Kahlo, a granddaughter of this couple, married Joseph Lake Kearns, hence the Kearns connection.)
There were apparently two Charles Kahlo/Kalo families, both from Prussia, who settled in Defiance. E-mail14Rupe in the previous post outlines her "Charles," b. abt. 1840, who married a Cornelia. This Charles had brothers Henry (1837) & Frank and sisters Helen & Amelia. He eventually moved on to Indianapolis. But the two Charles, Henry, their wives and children are all enumerated in 1860 under Kalo/Calo.
My question is whether or not Charles (1818) is the father of Henry (1837) & Charles (1840) through a first marriage? Or is he an uncle or brother? I do hope to hear from someone and would be happy to send my file to anyone interested.
My grandfather was Thomas Kearns, son of John C. Kearns. According to our records, John was born in 1860 in Williamstown and died in 1928, in New York City. Records indicate that John's wife Margaret and their children Thomas and Marguerite came to New York on October 28, 1891. Thomas married Elizabeth Rose Murray and had 5 children, including my father. Thomas died in 1943.

I have a Roy Kearns on my tree. He was born in Aberdeen South Dakota in 1897. His actual name was Thomas Leroy Kearns, but he was known all his life as Roy. He was in the US military during World War I (service number is 1441370) and appears in the records as "Corporal Roy Kearns". After the 1920's he lost touch with his family, so no one knows very much about his later life. He seems to be still be alive in 1953.

If you haven't already, you should order a copy of his birth certificate from NY city as it sometimes contains informatin different than what the NY Foundling Hospital had in their files. Here is the information you will need to order his birth certificate, Ambrose Kearns 29 Mar 1900 13545. The 13545 is the certificate number.

I came across you post b/c my grandmother was adopted out of the foundling hospital too and I thought the Kearns name might be connected to my grandmother.
