Hi,
Just to say some of my ancestors with the name Keats moved to the Isle of Wight, and also Hayling Island, Gosport and Portsea. They came originally from Corfe Castle in Dorset and in the main were stonemasons or from that industry.
Don't know if this is of help to you.
Val

Carol, sorry for such a long delay.I have been abroad for months. My idea was to contact you through the Roots notice board but they have mixed me up with someone in the U.S.A.and so it is difficult.I probably don't know much more than you do about the family. Uncle Percy was a thoroughly decent and very clever man. His sister Grace was a wardrobe mistress for the Cochrane theatre and remembered the Russians coming to London to ballet dance and how much they smelled. I would hazard a guess that it was Diagliev's troupe which would have included Nijinsky but that might be romantic embellishment. Q.was a Seroptimist,a group of people who helped the less advantaged. My aunt was very keen that both sisters were very well looked after and she cared very much about Uncle Percy's son and daughters.I think that it was Will Nuckey who had a son called young Percy and he looked like my uncle and is an engineer too(if he is still going). I think that he had three boys. You probably know that Uncle Percy's son Rodney is no more. He was a much respected racing driver and I remember seeing an oil painting of him in his car-I was about seven at the time.I have a lovely snapshot of Uncle Percy at my father's wedding and all I can say is he looks and was such a good egg. Love, Sally Goss xxx

I am searching for information on Sydney Keats. Born in the UK around 1800. Appeared in Saline MI USA in 1830. In 1831 he married Adaline Goodrich. They had 2 children Washington & William. Last known location Ypsilanti or Ann Arbor MI in 1840. Family letters say he was a Major in the British Army, sold his commission to come to the US.
I would like to know where in the UK he was born and who were his parents, did he have any brothers or sisters?
What ship did he come to the US on. When & where did he die?
Any info or research ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Hi,

I am Percy's grand niece, Carol Garland Behan, I live in Nova Scotia Canada.

My grandfather was one of Percy's older brothers, John York Nuckey. My husband and I have been working on the family search/history for over 30 years on and off, between raising our daughters and so on.

Any information you have and are willing to share would be wonderful as any information we have we would be willing to share. I have been in contact with Percy's daughter and have obtained some information from her as well.

My grandfather was born in 1882 and GrUncle Percy was born in 1897 so it creates a difference in ages and levels.

Percy's daughter was born 1939 and I was born in 1942 and yet she would have been my mother's cousin.

My mother met my father during the war, he was from Windsor, Nova Scotia. He sent Mom and I over to his family in August 1944 to get us away from the bombings. He returned to NS in November 1945 and we have lived here ever since.

I had a wonderful 5 week trip back to England last year, Feb 27 - Mar 31. Saw family I hadn't seen since my Mom, my sister and I were over in 1960. Have been lucky enough to have had trips over in 1986, 1990 with my husband and two daughters and in 1992 for my 50th birthday and the last trip in 2008 was for my 65th birthday.

Well enought of my rambling, probably more than you bargained for, hope to hear from you.

Carol

Dear Val, I have been searching for definite identification of Thomas Keats (father of the poet) born c. 1774 -at his death in 1804 his age is 30. The West Country could be counted as West of Windsor. There are legions of Keat(e)s /Skeat(e)s in Berks. Wilts. Dorset ,Devon ,Cornwall, and a good few in London not counting a whole mass of them in Staffs. I have published articles on possible ancestry from other clues that have surfaced, but it is a long haul. Best wishes.

George Keats married Georgiana Wylie in 1818 and they left for Louisville Kentucky America. They had eight children Georgiana Emily m. Alfred Gwathmey. She died 1856. Rosalind died unmarried pre 1840 Emma Frances m. Philip Speed and there are descendants. Isabel 1825 - 43 died unmarried. John Henry d. 1917 son or grand son living c. 1950s Clarence George 1830 - 1861. Ella m. George Peay d. 1888 .Alice Ann m. Edward M Drane d 1891. All of this is well documented in published works concerning the poet.
Your Thomas Burke Keats cannot be George's son as George was only 13/14 in 1810. The name is extremely common in many parts of England in various spellings.

Dear Val,
The St. George Hanover Square marriages are at Westminster Archives, not LMA. In any case ,the father's name is not given. Only occasionally if one of the parties is a minor does the father's name appear. This is befor civil registration 1837. Having searched for nearly fifty years , most records have been scoured. I have their banns entry also. It needs identification by a relative ,in something like a will ,to "nail" the right Thomas Keats.Best wishes , Jean.

In the past few months I have discovered that the references re Thomas Keats b 1760 and Frances Jennings no longer seem to be found on the IGI.

This brings into some doubt the earlier information upon which I was relying. However, I feel our family connection does exist as Henry Gullett b 1837 stayed with his Keats cousins in England in the mid 1860's and refers to them and their cousinship in his diaries written at that time.

Henry's father ,Henry Gullett b 1810, spent a large part of his working life in inner London and they kept in contact with his wife Isabella nee Keats' family there. Source diaries of Henry Gullett b 1837.

Reearch is continuing.

If you are putting your family descent on Ancestry, please correct the mis-information re Thomas Keats 1760 as the poet's father The IGI is a useful tool but deeper research is necessary to make a claim . Contact the Friends of Keats House of which I am a committee member - or the London Metropolitan Archives who curate the Keats collection for information about the poet's family.

What documentary proof have you, other than an entry in a dictionary of Australian Biography the Isabella Keats dau. of Samuel. is related to the poet. There are thousands of Keatses and several Thomas Keats of the right date born c. 1774 to be the poet's father ,but unless you have something like a will wher ethe testator states "my,,,brother,... son.... nephew Thomas Keats ,now of the Swan and Hoop Moorgate.. "you have no identification for Thomas.
Your Thomas Keats born 1760 is too old for the poets father who died 1804 at the age of 30

I have read about this Gullett connection but in 50 years of searching have not made it, nor positively identified Thomas Keats the poet's father. You may know that his children John George Tom and Fanny had as thir guardian Richard Abbey, senior partner in a tea-dealing house Abbey Cocks and Gullett.
As you probably know, the name Keats and its variant sellings is legion in Dorset, Devon etc and ther is no documentary connection between the poet's family and that of Isabella

I can understand your frustraion at trying to sort this out.

I have just spent some time reviewing my Keats file and do not really think that what I have may be of assistance.

I have no information in respect to Keats in the locality you mention.I have no EDGAR in over 10 gnerations of names.

I have a William HENRY Keats b 1885 in Langton Maltravors (son of William Keats and Elizabeth Ann Bower). In 1904 at Herston he married a Lucy Guy. I have only one child so far b 1904 Frederick William.

This Frederick William Keats married a GWENDOLINE KNIGHT in 1931. I have two children Leslie William 1933 and Barbara Suzanne 1945.

Another Frederick William KEats b 1890 son of Jospeh Keats and Ellen Fraser. he married Rose Fall in Bournemouth in 1911.

In another family line there is a HENRY Keats b 1860 in Swanage but I have no information on his marriage etc. (son of JAaes Keats and Lavinia Harris)

Also Henry Keats b 1841 Reading son of Henry Keats and Jane Appleforth.) No other details.

Henry Keats b Corfe Castle 1831 son of Robert Keats & Elizabeth Arnold married Sarah White. no further details

In 1881 their two eldest sons George b 1856 (railway clerk) and Johnb 1858 (stone mason)lived in Kensington.

No further details.

This may atleast give you some couoples to follow up births too but other than that I can give you nothing else.

Good Luck

Robyn in Australia

Dear Robyn,

I came across your post whilst searching and found that you have a William Henry KEATS in your line. I am also searching for a William Henry Keats born c.1832. He married Alice JOURDAN in Sydney in 1857 and died in Sydney 1911.

I'm wondering if you came across any other William Henry's whilst researching yours? Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Regards,
Tricia (Australia)

Hi All,

I am searching for info on William Henry KEATS (abt 1832-1892) who died in Sydney, NSW. He married Alice Jourdan (1837-1911) in 1857 in Sydney. They had three children that I know of: Emma Jane, my g.g grandmother (1867-1928) m. Sidney Alexander Smith, Edith (1870-1848), and William H (1873-?). There is no birth registration on NSW or VIC BDM indexes for William Henry - I believe he came from the UK.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Regards,
Tricia

I have some information on most Newfoundland Keats families.
I have traced them back to Dorset.

Unfortunately I believe Charlotte's records where lost in the fire about 1870.
I think she is a descendant of James Keats and Martha Card.

There is also a George Keats at Fogo in 1802. This maybe James' father.
hard to go back on this family with the reords lost.

Jeff

Sara Jane Keats was my great grandmother. Her son was my grandfather, Kenneth Keats. They were from the Laurel, MD area, not sure where she was born however. I am Katrina Lee Keats. My sister Sarah Jane Keats was named after my great grandmother when she passed away in 1986.

Hello Jean. Thank you for the information which I have printed out to keep. I have not got any further with the poet side of the Keats family, although I seem to have the rest of the Keats lineage (more or less) from the Corfe Castle area in Dorset. I have been told to look in the Metropolitan Archives as they could possibly have the marriage certificate of Thomas Keats and Francis Jennings and hopefully this would give the name of Thomas's father. I have not done this yet. Thank you for thinking of me. Regards. Val.

I am descended from Rose Edith Gwendoline Keats, born 1901 at Greenwich. Father Henry (Edgar?) Keats, born Poplar about 1877. Family tradition is that we are from the same family as John Keats, but have no evidence to support the claim. Henry Keats was, I believe, illegitimate and I have yet to trace a birth certificate to take his line any further back. He appears as Henry Keats on his marriage certificate. On the 1881 census, the only Henry Keats born at Poplar, has the middle name Edgar and is described as a boarder at an address in Suffolk

Have you any further information which could be of use to me?

Robert.
Cindy,

I would love to get the info on the Keats family. I have an ancestor, Thomas Keats Burke, that I believe is a descendant of the Keats family. He was born around 1810-1825 and married a woman named Catherine.

Thanks,
Diane Lowe
