John E Keck is my gggg grandfather through > John Weaver Keck > John Wesley Keck > etc. I have found so much conflicting information about him that I decided to start a new thread. I want to try to bring everything together concerning John E Keck. John E Keck is where myself and others are stuck, so I want to reopen the discussion on him. The purpose of this thread is to 1) narrow down the possibilities of who the parents of John E Keck are; 2) rule out those who are almost certainly not his parents; 3)determine whether he had a twin brother named Daniel; 4)determine John E Keck's actual birth dates and death dates; and 5) determine the origin of the letter "E" in John E Keck.
When researching John E Keck, I've seen his parents listed multiple ways with multiple dates:
1. George Keck and Catherine Helen Shaut/Schaub
2. John Keck and Helen Schaub
3. George W Keck and Mary Prong
Someone uploaded some new photos to his FindAGrave memorial (the link is below - there are two Lemley cemeteries and a John Keck memorial for each, so I'm just using the most recent memorial). Note the large black family stone. I don't know who the people are who made it(distant cousins of mine), but I hate to think they spent all that money on an engraving without having all the facts http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GSln=Ke...

In the Snodgrass family history, there are several pages on my Keck family and brief mention of John E Keck. The excerpt is attached. According to this, the name John was handed down three times until John Weaver Keck. I interpret this as meaning that John Weaver was John Keck III, John E was John Keck II, and John E's father was a John Keck I. But you could also interpret this as meaning that John Wesley Keck was really John Keck IV, meaning that John E Keck's father AND grandfather would have been named John. If either of these is the case, then the family stone that is erected near John E Keck's headstone in the FindAGrave memorial would be somewhat correct in indicating that John E Keck's father was another John Keck. However, I think it is pretty much certain that the Keck who married Helen Schaub, who was born in 1748 and died in 1816, is not a John but a George W Keck, of Heinrich's line. The 1901 history proves that. It should be noted that George W Keck had a brother named John (born abt 1743) that married a daughter of Nicholas Uberath, had three children, and died young. I think it is possible that this John is the grandfather of John E Keck, but that is only speculation. He would not be the father because he died young, but he could the first John in the line. Only speculation.
I have seen the following posted in a few places. It suggests that George W. Keck is the father of John E. Keck. It goes against what the 1901 Keck history says, as George W did not have a son named John in the text.
Biographical and portrait cyclopedia of Monongalia, Marion and Taylor counties, West Virginia comprising about five hundred sketches of prominent and representative citizens of these counties. Rush, West & Company, Philadelphia, Pa. 1895
pp. 44 Phillip H. Keck
"[Phillip Henry].. is a son of John and Catharine (Creichbaum) Keck, and was born in the city of Reading, Pennsylvania, on March 6, 1820. His paternal grandfarther was George W. Keck, of German lineage, and a native of Pennsylvania."
As far as John E Keck being a twin to Daniel Keck, the 1901 history makes no mention of Daniel (born 1785) having a twin brother. I find it unlikely that the author would have missed this so I'm personally ruling it out. If there is any other info on this, feel free to post it here. I have seen only speculation
I've seen John E Keck being born in 1785(twin to Daniel theory and M. Keck Grayson's documents), 1788(another researcher has posted this a few times), and 1790(headstone). His death dates have been 1861(M. Keck Grayson's documents), 1863 (headstone), and 1865("The Monongalia Story, pg 579). I'm going to go with the headstone dates but if anyone knows a reason why these other dates are more accurate, please post it here.
As far as the "E" goes in John E Keck, can anyone come up with a source that proves his middle name started with an E? I have not seen any original documents that show John Keck with an E.
I know this thread will be of special interest to a few select researchers who have been looking into John E Keck for much longer than I have. It may not shed any new information on the man, but hopefully it will dispel some misinformation. Attached to this post are excerpts of the Snodgrass family history and the 1901 Keck history. If you have any other sources to share, please do so. I know there are sources out there that I don't have.
