Hi I just found out my real name is keck my grandfather was in trouble in Allentown Pa in the 20's and just assumed the name of cavanaugh. I too am thinking of changing my name after the dna test, we may be some distant cousin as all the kecks in the USA are related. I found a message board posting about a lost keck on the genealogy.com site it sounds like a keck up in washington if I remember correctly. good luck you have a very important lineage in America

Found out that my biological father Michael Thurman was the product of a one night stand with a Carl (or Karl) Keck, who was in the military on the west coast. My grandmother said that he was in the army, but they met in Yakima, WA and I guess got in some trouble in the Seattle/Tacoma area. I dont have much info about him.

I changed my name based on this information

Please email me at keck.j@me.com

Re: John E Keck

If John Keck did have a twin brother named Daniel, there is a possibility that this is him:

http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GSvcid=...;

However I am doubtful. I have more reason to believe that this Daniel Keck is his brother, but they would not be twins:

http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GSln=ke...;

In fact I think this Daniel Keck is much more likely to be the brother of John Keck. In an obituary for this Daniel Keck's daughter, Mary Jane Keck Midkiff, it explains that she was born in Longehalia, Virginia in 1829, which is definitely Monongalia, modern day West Virginia. Therefore this Daniel Keck and our John Keck both lived in Monongalia, WV.

There is also a George Keck at the Mt. Pisgah Baptist Cemetery. He would most likely be another brother. If that is the case, then this George Keck may be George Keck Jr.
Just adding this for speculation purposes

Here's that obituary link

http://www.shelbycountyindiana.org/obituaries/obit_midkiff.h...

John E Keck

John E Keck is my gggg grandfather through > John Weaver Keck > John Wesley Keck > etc. I have found so much conflicting information about him that I decided to start a new thread. I want to try to bring everything together concerning John E Keck. John E Keck is where myself and others are stuck, so I want to reopen the discussion on him. The purpose of this thread is to 1) narrow down the possibilities of who the parents of John E Keck are; 2) rule out those who are almost certainly not his parents; 3)determine whether he had a twin brother named Daniel; 4)determine John E Keck's actual birth dates and death dates; and 5) determine the origin of the letter "E" in John E Keck.

When researching John E Keck, I've seen his parents listed multiple ways with multiple dates:

1. George Keck and Catherine Helen Shaut/Schaub
2. John Keck and Helen Schaub
3. George W Keck and Mary Prong

Someone uploaded some new photos to his FindAGrave memorial (the link is below - there are two Lemley cemeteries and a John Keck memorial for each, so I'm just using the most recent memorial). Note the large black family stone. I don't know who the people are who made it(distant cousins of mine), but I hate to think they spent all that money on an engraving without having all the facts

http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GSln=Ke...;

Find A Grave Memorial# 58616631

In the Snodgrass family history, there are several pages on my Keck family and brief mention of John E Keck. The excerpt is attached. According to this, the name John was handed down three times until John Weaver Keck. I interpret this as meaning that John Weaver was John Keck III, John E was John Keck II, and John E's father was a John Keck I. But you could also interpret this as meaning that John Wesley Keck was really John Keck IV, meaning that John E Keck's father AND grandfather would have been named John. If either of these is the case, then the family stone that is erected near John E Keck's headstone in the FindAGrave memorial would be somewhat correct in indicating that John E Keck's father was another John Keck. However, I think it is pretty much certain that the Keck who married Helen Schaub, who was born in 1748 and died in 1816, is not a John but a George W Keck, of Heinrich's line. The 1901 history proves that. It should be noted that George W Keck had a brother named John (born abt 1743) that married a daughter of Nicholas Uberath, had three children, and died young. I think it is possible that this John is the grandfather of John E Keck, but that is only speculation. He would not be the father because he died young, but he could the first John in the line. Only speculation.

I have seen the following posted in a few places. It suggests that George W. Keck is the father of John E. Keck. It goes against what the 1901 Keck history says, as George W did not have a son named John in the text.

Biographical and portrait cyclopedia of Monongalia, Marion and Taylor counties, West Virginia comprising about five hundred sketches of prominent and representative citizens of these counties. Rush, West & Company, Philadelphia, Pa. 1895
pp. 44 Phillip H. Keck
"[Phillip Henry].. is a son of John and Catharine (Creichbaum) Keck, and was born in the city of Reading, Pennsylvania, on March 6, 1820. His paternal grandfarther was George W. Keck, of German lineage, and a native of Pennsylvania."

As far as John E Keck being a twin to Daniel Keck, the 1901 history makes no mention of Daniel (born 1785) having a twin brother. I find it unlikely that the author would have missed this so I'm personally ruling it out. If there is any other info on this, feel free to post it here. I have seen only speculation

I've seen John E Keck being born in 1785(twin to Daniel theory and M. Keck Grayson's documents), 1788(another researcher has posted this a few times), and 1790(headstone). His death dates have been 1861(M. Keck Grayson's documents), 1863 (headstone), and 1865("The Monongalia Story, pg 579). I'm going to go with the headstone dates but if anyone knows a reason why these other dates are more accurate, please post it here.

As far as the "E" goes in John E Keck, can anyone come up with a source that proves his middle name started with an E? I have not seen any original documents that show John Keck with an E.

I know this thread will be of special interest to a few select researchers who have been looking into John E Keck for much longer than I have. It may not shed any new information on the man, but hopefully it will dispel some misinformation. Attached to this post are excerpts of the Snodgrass family history and the 1901 Keck history. If you have any other sources to share, please do so. I know there are sources out there that I don't have.

While I do not mean to sound negative, it must be pointed out that there are a number of errors and undocumented assumptions in this message regarding the immigrant Henrich Geck/Keck, and use of this information should be subjected to verification. For example, Henrich Geck came to America on the pink (a type of sailing vessel) John and William (not the Clyde. Another example is the list of children - many of those listed are not Henry's children (tho, George, who married Eleanor Catherine Schaub/Schaut, was one of his sons) Anyone interested in documentation substantiating the foregoing, or other documented information regarding the Henrich Keck family and descendants, should feel free to contact me at hrauch@infionline.net.

Re: Peter Keck - Luzerne/Columbia Counties, PA

Yesterday, I came across the newspaper image commemorating Peter Keck's 100th birthday. I am related as follows:
6. 4th Great Grandfather Peter Keck, was the father of
5. 3rd Great Grandmother Felicia Ann Keck Tubbs Moore, who was the widow of 3-GGF Daniel Tubbs and the mother of
4. 2nd Great Grandmother Eva Tubbs Clewell, who was the wife of 2-GGF George Z. Clewell (the 'Z' is important) and the mother of
3. Great Grandmother Verdi Clewell Kline, who was the wife of GGF Harry Lee Kline and the mother of
2. Grandfather Clyde Delbert Kline, who was the father of
1. Ruth Kline Collins, who is my mother.

People 3 - 6 appear in an engraving accompanying the article.

Please send me an e-mail to BabaORileyUSA-at-yahoo-dot-com, with the same subject line shown above, and I will send you the pdf file (you will need Adobe Acrobat or some variation on that theme) to read it. I can also convert it to a jpeg. It isn't of the greatest quality, and I intend to contact the Wilkes-Barre Library to see if I can obtain a higher resolution image of that page of the paper.

How are you related to Peter Keck? Is it through the Tubbs family? I also have an interesting item there....

It would be interesting to let the Ancestry computer calculate the distance of our relationship! We are cousins of some sort, if you are related.

Sincerely,
Dan Collins
BabaORileyUSA

Wondering if anyone has a Jennie E Keck (Possibly Esther or Ellen Keck) born in Greenville, Mercer County, PA in 1867 in their records? I do not know her parents names but they might be Abraham and Kate -but I cannot confirm. She married Charles S. Richards in 1891 and they lived in Erie, PA. Jennie was my great great grandmother and sadly no information was shared about her down the line. Thank you in advance!

Angie Leasure-Mullis

Conrad Keck of Ohio

I am researching Sophia Keck, daughter of Conrad Keck, who married John Heintz.

I have found two biographical sketches of John Heintz of Ohio that talk about his first wife, Sophia Keck or Kech. She probably died in the 1840s. One book mentions that her father was a prominent land owner in Trumbull County, Ohio named Conrad Keck.

I can only find one Conrad Keck in Ohio on the family trees here - the Conrad born in 1764 in PA - but none of the family trees list a daughter Sophia. The dates match, but alas no Sophia, so I am not sure what to do. I can't find any documentation for Conrad Keck, his wife or his children. If anyone can help me, I'd greatly appreciate it.

Re: Ming Keck

Jimbob:

Thank you very much for your polite and well reasoned response.

We, too, have the death, in 1904, of 1st wife Elizabeth, Ming's marriage to Bertha and their long time residence in Decatur, Macon Co., Illinois. Lots of info about Ming & family but nothing additional (so far) connecting Ming to Peter.

"High standards?" Perhaps. However, we've learned, even the hard copy "facts" on BMD certificates (that we see with our own eyes) are often in error. It is only later, if at all, and after much more research, that we must conclude that our (fictitious) GGGM Maggie fibbed about her age on the marriage cert. in 1850 and that error was carried to the grave on the death cert & tombstone. A few decades ago, only close kin might be aware of the error, unfortunately, in the internet age, if the first error was posted in a tree then, through "cut & paste research" by others, the error spreads to very distant cousins.

In any case, I'm not posting a tee but, with your permission, I will "cut & paste" your message to my research notes on Peter Ming Keck, connect the dots to Henry & Mary, and move on.

Again, thanks & best regards,
Bill
You have very high standards. The 1945 Illinois death certificate cinches it for me - same parents and birth year as Peter.

One possible avenue of search for you could be his wife. Note at the time of his death he was married to Bertha Sullivan, not the Elizabeth Brock you found. Perhaps he was widowed or divorced? A search of those records may lead you to additional information.

You may also have seen some Family Trees on Ancestry.com that list a "Peter Mayne Keck" as a son of Henry Clay and Mary Ragle. Unfortunately they list no source information so I have no idea if they have made the right connection. However, it is possible he started going by some variant of his middle name once he became an adult - but just speculation. Good luck.

Good luck.

Mr. Wilson: I have long thought that there is a distinct possibility that the John and Andrew Keck referred to in Yoder's entry for Anna Barbara Keck are two of the sons of Henrich (Geck) Keck, the 1732 immigrant from the Ober Pfalz region. If you would care to have me provide information about this immigrant and his children, etc., please contact me at hrauch@infionline.net.
Keck arrived 18th Century

Pennsylvania German Immigrants (1709-1786) edited by Don Yoder lists in the emmigrants from Wuerttemberg 3 Kecks anna Barbara Keck *Oberiflingen B. 2-17-1726, daughter of Andreas Keck to the "New World" // 3PA, 19, 109; John and Andrew Keck, Salisbury Tp, Northhampton Co., PA, 1785.---- Does anyone hava a suggestion the the relationship between John and Andrew. An Andrew Keck located in what is now WV about 1800 with John moving in with his family about 1820. Census records are of little help as the result of multiple Andrews and Johns in what is available in the 1700s.

Steve - I think this message would be of interest to the first person on the list, not me. I am related through marriage to only one Keck and not the ones you listed. Good luck with Ancestry. It sure has me hooked :)
Judy

I just enrolled in ancestry.com today because I ran across a family tree dated June 1, 1916 with approximately 100 names on it. At the top of the lsit is Rosa Ziegler Keck, married to Karl Keck, they had 5 children including Sylvia and Lydia Keck, could these possibly form your family tree.

Sincerely,
Steve

Biographical and portrait cyclopedia of Monongalia, Marion and Taylor counties, West Virginia comprising about five hundred sketches of prominent and representative citizens of these counties. Rush, West & Company, Philadelphia, Pa. 1895
pp. 44 Phillip H. Keck
What a man makes of himself, and not what he is made by the aid of family or the influence of friends, is a record that he can proudly leave behind him for the inspection of the world; and the field of action in which a life of activity or usefulness may be carved out need not be national in its dimensions. Such has been the fortune of the subject of this sketch. He has won for himself the high position in life he now holds through his own efforts, and for almost a half century has been one of the most prominent and successful attorneys in the state of West Virginia. He is a son of John and Catharine (Creichbaum) Keck, and was born in the city of Reading, Pennsylvania, on March 6, 1820. His paternal grandfarther was George W. Keck, of German lineage, and a native of Pennsylvania.
In 1823 the parents of P. H. Keck emigrated to Monongalia county, Virginia, now West Virginia, settling in the western part of the county, where his father proceeded to convert a portion of the wilderness into a farm and a home, a fit place for the dwelling of man. The grandfather and his son John Keck, both gave their services in the defense of their country's rights in the War of 1812.
John Keck was born in Pennsylvanin in 1788, came with the family to the country where he lived the remainder of his days, dying in 1865. His marriage to Catharine Creichbaum, daughter of Phillip Creichbaum, resulted in the birth of thirteen children.
Philip H. Keck obtained a good common school education in the schools of the county, but the most essential elements of his education were obtained by general reading and attrition with the world. When a young man he learned the trace of a tailor, which trade he followed less than a year, when he entered upon the study of the law, a profession more commensurate with his tastes and talents. He read in the office of General R. C. Allen and R. L. Berkshire, of Morgantown, and was admitted in October, 1844, to practice in the courts of West Virginia. He entered at once with fervor upon the practice of his chosen profession, which he practiced uninterruptedly until January 1, 1893, when he withdrew from the exactions of an active practice, and now lives in happy retirement in his county home, on-half mile west of Morgantown, on the banks of the historic Monongahela.
Politically he is a democrat but has never had the time nor the inclination to enter actively the arena of politics. He served as prosecuting attorney one term, from 1852 to 1856, but on account of a large and increasing business refused a re-nomination at the expiration of that term.
Mr. Keck has been twice married; his first marriage was with Mary Johnson, a daughter of Bennett Johnson. To this union were born seven children; all are deceased except Leonidas V., who was educated in the schools of Morgatown, read law with his father, and was admitted to the bar in 1882, formed a partnership with his father in 1886, which lasted until his father retired in 1893, when he succeeded to his father's practice. He is regardedas an able and talented attorney.
Philip H. Keck married, as his second wife, Anna Brown, daughter of Reason H. Brown, on January 1, 1889. As a lawyer Mr. Keck's comprehensive mind was peculiarly fitted to grapple with the difficult quesitons arising out of a complicated case of law. His clear statement of the facts and relative points of the case, his strong and convincing arguments, his logical conclusions, his comprehensive summary of evidence and his masterly exposition of the law made him one of the foremost lawyers of West Virginia and drew to him a large an appreciative clientage, and he withdraws fromt he profession so ... sdorned happy in the consciousness of having given his best services to those who intrusted their interests to his keeping.
END
