Help! We are stuck....

Hi,

We are from St. Augustine Florda and we are kind of stuck tracing a husband and wife back to England.

We are looking to find out where a Thomas Henry Keegan (b. 1869) and his wife Elizabeth J. (b.1869) lived in England, parents names, where they were born, married, died and are buried. We believe they raised a nephew Charles Keegan (b. 25 Sep 1902 d. 04 Jan 1983) of Coventry, England.

Thomas & Elizabeth Keegan made many trips to America and lived there for a number of years.

Is there a way to look up their last return voyage in late 1920 (see below) to England to see where Thomas and Elizabeth lived in England? Was it Coventry? Is there a way to find out when they died, where they are buried and if Charles is buried there too? Is there a way to find the obituary for Charles?

WE HAVE A BUNCH OF DETAIL...

Name: THOMAS H. KEEGAN (b. 1869) - Shipping Clerk

Wife: Elizabeth J. (b. 1869) married 1897.
Brother: Alfred W. Keegan (b. 1866) - Shipping Clerk
Sister: Catherine Keegan (b. 1865) - Teacher
Nephew: They raised Charles a nephew (b. 25 Sep 1902 d. 04 Jan 1983) of Coventry, England

TIMELINE

1869 - Thomas was born in Ireland or England
1892 - Thamas (22) first came to America per 1900 US Census
1897 - Thomas (28) married to a Elizabeth J. (28) who came to America that same year.
1897 - Thomas and wife were Naturalized in City of Corning, New York, USA on Oct 5.
1900 - They lived at 64 Pleasant St, Corning, New York
1900 - Thomas, his wife & his sister Catherine (age 35), came to Corning on the "Oceanic" Sep 20.
1905 - Thomas, came back to Corning via the "Caronia" Aug 23.
1905 - Elizabeth came to Corning with a Nephew Charles (age 3) on the "Oceanic" Dec 4.
1912 - Alfred W. Keegan (age 40) a brother, came to Corning with his family to live with Thomas.
1920 - Thomas and wife Elizabeth came to Corning via the "Caronia" from Tilbury London Nov 10.

Apparently the Nephew (Charles) was one of twin sons of Alfred W. Keegan the brother of Thomas.
There are US Census records for Alfred and his family who stayed in Corning. There are no US Census records for Thomas and Elizabeth after 1900, which make us believe they moved back to England. The Nephew Charles died in Coventry England on Jan 4, 1983. We believe he was adopted or raised by Thomas and Elizabeth.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Cheers from Florida!

John & KC Bradshaw
oldmillbranch@yahoo.com

I have history about my Gr.Gr. Grandfather Michael Keegan b. 1843 somewhere in Brooklyn NY. My dilema is he may have been born with the given name of Basil or Cecil. He also had a brother and 2 sisters. His brother went by the name of Patrick, but he to may have one of the above given names. Last story I got was that Patrick (cecil or basil) died in Austraila...any help? anybody know their parents name?

The Keegan Family from Longford, Ireland

I have located my gggrandparents in the town of Creevagh Beg, Ballymahon Poor Law Union, Noughaval Civil Parish, Shrule Barony, Longford County, Leinster Province, Ireland.
(Whew!)

Both Christopher, b 1831 and Catherine Downey, b 1835, were born in Longford, although I don't know what town or union. Their six children (Catherine,Anna,Bridget,Christina,Teresa and Christopher)were all born in Ballymahon.Presumably they were baptized in the local Roman Catholic parish, although I don't yet have those records.

At least one of the children, Anna (my ggrandmother) emigrated to New York City, where she married Joseph Hyland.

In the 1901 Ballymahon Poor Law Union census Christopher, Catherine and Bridget were living in Creevagh Beg. Chrsitopher was a stonemason.

Do I have any relatives out there reading this? And does anyone have any information on the Keegans or Downeys that came before Christopher and Catherine??

Sue "Genealsue" Renzo

Anna / Annie KEEGAN - my ggrandmother

Anna b. Apr 1870 in Ireland (don't know where); Catholic

Emigrated to US May 1888 on Brittanic (I think); left from Liverpool, arrived Port of New York 1 Jun 1888.

Married Joseph HYLAND in NYC 1892; nine children, but only three survived to adulthood

Don't have date of death, but it was after 1930

I have absolutely no other knowledge of Anna, other than her picture. My mother,82,last surviving family member who remembers her, has only a very hazy recollection of having met her. She remembers no details of Anna's family or origins.

I am in need of assistance with the following:
(1) Where in Ireland to begin. Is there an area with a heavy concentration of Keegan families?
(2) Are there any records of those who left Ireland that I could match up with ship manifests?

I need to figure out how to cross reference the limited information I have, to verify that I am researching the correct Anna Keegan Hyland. The only records I have located to date are census records and a possible ship manifest for the Brittanic. No marriage record, no naturalization record, no birth records from her or her children.

ANY help of advice will be SO appreciated!!

Best,

Susan McMillan Renzo

I am trying to trace the roots of Mary Ann Keegan, born circa 1841, Ireland. I believe possibly Co. Louth. She married George Cann, born Devon, coachbuilder probably in Ireland. They had 5 children. Louisa Jane, James, George, born in Ireland & Effy and Maryann, born Middlesex. All the female members of the family, including subsequent granddaughters were shirtmakers (linen). They were of no particular religious persuasions and believe may have been non catholic. Are there any leads anyone can offer, I would be very grateful.
Regards to all, Rob

I am searching for information about my grandmother, Anna Mary or Ann Mary Keegan from Roscommon, Ireland. She was born in the early 1900's, immigrated to the U.S., and worked for a time in Boston, Mass. She had two brothers. One was Bernard, or Barney, Keegan, who lived in Jaffrey Center, NH. I think the other's name was Patrick. Anna married James Kirkman and died in childbirth around 1924. I would be very grateful for any information on this family.

She went to the hospital for an operation which she underwent a week ago. The operation proved to be unavailing, however, and she passed away yesterday.
Martin Keegan Dead

Mr. Martin Keegan, of Hanerville, died last Friday, aged 64 years. He leaves a wife, four daughters and five sons to mourn his death.
Mrs. S. Madden of Edgerton, and Mrs. J. Madden of the same place, Miss Etta and Kate, of Hanerville, Mr. Will, Martin, Peter, Herbert and Daniel, all of Hanerville.
Services were conducted by Father Harlin, of Edgerton, interment in Porter Catholic cemetery. Mr. Keegan was of a bright, sunny disposition, much loved and respected by all who knew him. He was also a soldier of the war in 60 and 64.
As silently the mystic light had faded its gloom,
While slowly onward sadly we were going toward the tomb.
For the angel death had given forth a summons and a call.
And around his fragile form wrapt a deep black mourning pall.
A cross with God's own image, was in his hands most dear.
A flag, a soldier's emblem, to him lay very near.
He fought his battle bravely, and conquerred over sin,
And may his soul find a sweet rest, forever more. Amen.

Janesville DAily Gazette-Sept. 16,1903. Page 3:2.
A

Officer John Keegan Chicago Died

A SON OF OLD ROCK
The Murderd Chicago Officer, John Keegan, a Former
Resident of Magnolia
Officer John Keegan who was found outstretched in a vacant lot in Chicago resently with a ghastly bullet hole in his skull, was born and brought up in Rock county. He lived in the town of Magnolia but went from there to Chicago several years ago.
His mother still lives on the old homstead, while Phillip T. Keegan, a brother of the dead man, lives at No. 59 Chatham street in this city. He has returned from Chicago where he went to attend the funeral, and to help clear up the mystery connected with his brother's death.
It was rumored at first that the death had been from suicide, but this report has been proven untrue. The coroner's jury returned a verdict to the effect that death resulted "from a pistol shot fired by some party to the jury unknown."

Janesville Daily Gazette, Thurs, Nov. 10,1887, page 4:3.
Janesville WI, Rock co.

Mrs. Keegan, Mrs. Newman, and Mr. and Mrs. Ward and Mr. Frank Keegan started for Chicago Friday to attend the funeral of Mr. John Keegan, a policeman who was shot and killed last Thursday night.

Janesville Daily Gazette-Nov.10,1887. page 4:6.

I am looking for information on the family of my great great great grandmother, Cecelia Jessen. Her family's name was Keegan. According to 1870 census data from Davenport, Scott, Iowa, her parents were born in Ireland. Her father's name was Edward and her mother was Catherine. Newspaper records have reference to sisters Mary and Catherine. Her brothers were Peter, Edward, James and John. Some were born in Ireland, New York, and Iowa. Her brothers seem to vanish from record. Sound familiar to anyone?

I am looking for any information about Eliza An Keegan. She married L.D. Leird on September 15, 1878 in Greenbriar, Faulkner Co., Arkansas. I believe she was 27 when she married but I have no idea where or if Keegan is her maiden name or if she was married before. She died Sept. 30, 1887 and may be buried in southeastern Oklahoma (it would have been the Choctaw Nation, Indian Territory then). Any help or information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Am looking for any information on Elizaebth, Bernard and Charles Keegan and their parents. I know that the parents arrived in New Orleans from Ireland sometime in 1845 and Elizabeth was born 1 August 1845 in New Orleans. The family moved to Illinois and I have not been able to locate them there. Elizabeth's father died in the Civil War and her mother died shortly after. Elizabeth and her two brothers Charles and Bernard were bound out as indentured servants. When Elizabeth was freed at 21 she married John Wesley Ellis in 1866 in either Kentucky or Missouri. Elizabeth would be my g-g-grandmother. Any help appreciated.

While searching various sections in St. Ann's Cemetery, Cranston, RI for our KEEGAN"s I encountered the following burials which I recorded so I could check them when I got home to see if they were perhaps cousins. I have no further information on these KEEGAN"s other than this. They are not our family.

Sec 9 Plot 342
Keegan Charles 1902-1930
His Wife Dorothy M. GREAVES 1902- (No date engraved)
William J. GREAVES 1870-1942
Annie GREAVES 1875-1852

Sec 5 Plot 150
John KEEGAN 1865-1941
His Wife Nellie M. MCLOUGHLIN 1874-1947
Children Irene M. 1904-1929
Francis M. 1905-1952

Sec E Plot - number not present-flat inground stone
John W. KEEGAN 1870-1943
His Wife Catherine T. 1876-1958

Just a note on Providence Diocesan Catholic Cemtereies I've dealt with in RI: All records are kept by death date with no system in place to cross reference by name so you must know the date of death to find the ancestor. The alternative is that the office at the cemetery can tell you what sections were active for burials during what years and you can go out and do what I did, walk the rows. searching.

Godd Luck and please remember: These people are not our family so the only information I have is what is in this post. I can be of no assistance beyond this.

Keegans in Franklin Co., NY

Looking for information on my grandparents who lived in the Alderbrook and Franklin Falls area of Franklin Co., NY in the mid 1800's. I have found them on the 1850 and 1860 censuses but can't locate them until 1900. Names: John Keegan (b. 1820), wife Ann (b.1822), kids: Thomas (b.1848), John (b. 1851), James (b. 1853), Samuel (my ancestor, b. 1855), Jane (b. 1857), and Henry (b. 1859). I know that Samuel was in the Dakotas by 1887 (but can't find on the census) and then in Oklahoma by the 1900 census. Any other info appreciated.

Hello everyone! I am looking for some help. My great grandfather was Michael Patrick Keegan (b. 19 May 1887, d. Jan 1969). I know that he lived in Cumberland Maryland but do not know where he was born. According to family he spoke with a heavy Irish accent but I am not sure if he was born in Ireland or came here as a child. Michael married Clara M. Cox (b. 12 August 1883) and they had at least 4 children; Mary Lois who married John A. Bolden Jr. (my grandparents). They lived in Meyersdale, PA. James who married Doris ? and lived in Michigan, Margaret (Peg) who married Frank Kelly and lived in Cumberland Maryland, and Bernard who I don't think ever married and he lived in the Cumberland Maryland area.
If anyone has any information regarding this family, please contact me! Thank you!!!!!!!!!

I apologize for getting the Rose's mixed up. The one mentioned in your post is my father's Aunt Rosalie DeCook Weibold and not his sister Rose. Still, any info on this line of DeCook's as to ships and arrivals or naturalization records would be much appreicated.

Adair

Information for the Keegan-West family tree...

Hi! I am offering information for the Keegan-West family tree. The tree ends with the daughter of Sarah Olive West who married an "Unknown Richardson". Her daughter is Agnes Richardson, (now Provance) and she is my great-grandmother. She is still living, and has much information about her father (listed as unknown), her siblings, her own children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren. (Also, info on her mother too, who I myself remember, and lived until I was around 14 years old.) If interested, please contact me at Holly_Anske@adelphia.net
Thanks!!

Margaret Keegan wife of John Riffel

My great great grandmother Margaret Keegan came to US about 1857 from Ireland, possibly Cork. She was born about 1831, and married John Riffel, from the German-speaking area of Switzerland. They first lived in Indiana, where their first three children were born, then to Michigan, and finally to Chicago. They had 10 children, 8 living to adulthood:Mary 1859, Charles 1861, Henry 1863, John 1865, Emma 1868, William 1870, Frank 1875, Nellie 1880, Ida 1882 and John (first John had died) 1884. I've found them in the Michigan 1870 census, and the Chicago 1880 and 1900 census. Margaret died in 1904 and is buried in Mt Olivet cemetery with a young grandaughter named Elenore Curry. Can't find the family in the 1860 census. I have a copy of an old tintype picture taken in Ireland when Margaret was about 22 years old. Would love to find out more about the Keegans!
