I have only recently learned that my ancestor Lewis Powell married Sarah Johnston-Keel widow of Samuel Keel and that he had 3 Keel stepdaughters. Can you tell me anything more about this family. I know they moved to Edgefield SC but I have no idea if they had children or who they were ... I sure hope you have found more on this since you descend from one of these daughters.
Hannah Powell

Others may have figured this out already, so I'm sorry if I'm repeating information. I think Hardy Keel may be Harley Keel - 1879? - 1968. He was the brother of Duffy W. Keel and son of George W. Keel and Rhoda Lee.

I am the grandson of Ralph Mayo Keel, Sr. and am excited to see other of my kin on here. Mary Lena (Rice) Keel was my grandmother.

Dave Keel

Hello Bill, Thanks for the information. My wife and I grew up on the Illinois side of the Quad Cities, but moved to 50 miles east of Kansas City Mo. about 20 years ago. I was trying to find where my Aunt Maudie [Ensley] [Keel] Renteria was buried. After she and Geddes divorced, she married a Hispanic man Mr. Renteria, had a son Richard and unfortunatly was disowned by the family. This would have taken place in the 1930`s. After Richard was born his father was killed in a knife fight [at least that`s the family story] then Maudie married another hispanic man that her Keel grandchildren thought of as Grandpa. He was a good man from what I`ve heard, but have no idea what his last name was. Maudie was to have been buried in Davenport in the 1960`s. Your father and I would share quite a few Keel first cousins from Geddes and Maudie`s marriage. I don`t know any of them and would imagine quite a few would have passed away by now. Do you or your father know any of these Keel cousins? My mother kept in touch with one named Leona, I believe Leona had polio as a child and had trouble walking. I wasn`t able to view your Keel Family site at Ancestry, as I gave my Ancestry subscription up about a year ago and they wouldn`t let me into your site. Dave

I think your searching tie together with this.
In 1880 Esther Pridemore is living in Rose Hill Twp., Lee County, Virginia with her son Hiram and his wife Lucy A. and their daughter Sarah M., b. ca Feb. 1880. Also living with Hiram and Lucy is Hiram's sister Charlotta, age 19. I think Charlotta and Mary from the 1860 census could be the same person.

Esther was a widow on 6 June 1880. William died sometime between the 26 August 1870 and the 1880 census.

Citation:
1880  >  VIRGINIA  >  LEE  >  ROSE HILL DIST
Series: T9  Roll: 1375  Page: 292
Surname GivenName Age Sex Race Birthplace State County Location Year
PRIDEMORE ESTHER 62 W KY VA LEE ROSE HILL DIST 1880

Wow! Pieces that all fit together, thanks to you! I appreciate your searching and sharing.

Also, you were right on to the pronounciation of Easter which is what we would spell as Esther. Hermy spelled it for me several times when we would talk about family of long ago.

Found some of the sheets I printed out in 1999 to check out further sometime and this was one of the missing names...
If you want, I will scan the picture of her, it is retouched from a tear. Let me know, and I will give you my email address so you can send me yours and I will share the picture with you. I need to get busy and get my family tree program cleaned up and submitted. I just didn't keep sources way back when I began............ have learned to do so now, but that doesn't help the beginning of my collection.

Have a great day! You made my day!

I have been doing more researching today and the Pridmores I talked about in the previous message are Gelana's family. I found this same family in 1870 in Claiborne County, Tennessee. This county adjoins Lee County, Virginia.

1870  >  TENNESSEE  >  CLAIBORNE  >  TAZEWELL P O
Series: M593  Roll: 1518  Page: 240
Surname GivenName Age Sex Race Birthplace State County Location Year

PRIDEMORE  WILLIAM  50  M  W  TN  TN  CLAIBORNE  TAZEWELL P O  1870  (26 August 1870)
House 5/Family 5
Pridemore, William, White, Male, 50, Farmer, Value of Personal Items $100, born Tennessee, cannot write
Pridemore, Hester, White, female, 51, Keeping House, born Kentucky, cannot read or write
Pridemore, Hiram, White, male, 22, works on farm, born Virginia, cannot write
Pridemore, Jane, White, female, 18, born Virginia, cannot write
Pridemore, Gelana, White, female, 16, born Virginia, can read and write
Pridemore, Charlotta, White, female, 11, Born Virginia, can read and write

Gelana was such an unusual name, that I began searching through Pridmores, Crabtrees, etc.thinking perhaps it was a family name. I knew Richard Yonce's mother was Elizabeth Crabtree. I discovered that her mother was Elizabeth Hoskins. Elizabeth Hoskins' sister Esther Hoskins was married to a Pridemore. That may help to explain how Yonce's and Pridemores became joined.

I went through the 1860-1870 Census records for Virginia last night for Pridemore and Pridmore. During that search I did not find any females the right age under Pridemore that could be Gelania.

I then looked at Pridmore. I found:

26 June 1860, Western District, Lee County, Virginia, 106/114
Wm. H. Pridmore, 40, male, farm laborer,  with real estate valued at $400 and personal property valued at $130, born in Virginia, could not read or write;
Easter Pridmore (could have been Esther misspelled) female, age 42, b. Kentucky, housekeeper, could not read or write;
(All children Pridmore)
Jas. K, 17, male, farm laborer, b. Lee Co. VA;
Sarah, 16, female, b. Lee County, VA;
Wm., 15, male, farm laborer, b. Lee Co. VA;
Hyram, 12, male, b. Lee County, VA;
Jane, 7, female, b. Lee Co. VA;
Mary, 3/12, female, b. Lee Co. VA;
Silana, 5, female, b. Lee Co. VA.

This 5 year old female by the name of Silana, b. Lee County, Virginia, may be our girl. Usually the children are listed in order of birth, but Silana was listed at the end. Silana was the only female in the 4-6 year age range for either Pridemore or Pridmore.

I did not locate this family in Virginia in 1870. I would guess that they were living near the Yonce family in 1870, as Richard Yonce was still single and living with his parents in 1870 in Rose Hill Twp., Lee County, VA. I estimate that Gelania and Richard were married around 1872, because they were married 28 years in 1900.

Thanks for the information. I am researching my grandchildren's family and their great-great grandmother was Macel Keel Bryan. They are descended from Macel's son Virgil.

As for Jalania Yonce's death, I found the record in a book of Red River County burials. She was the only Yonce listed in the 4 volumes. The quote from the book was, "Jalania Yonce wife of R.J. b. 21 Dec 1856 d. 27 Oct 1930." It is possible that the recorder of this cemetery transposed the 3 and 0 when recording or typing the data.

I live in Sherman, Texas and I thought I might take a run over to Red River County and see if I can find the tombstone. I am not sure what type of county records are kept, but I thought I might also check at the courthouse in Clarksville for any death records.

Do you know what Jalania's maiden name was? I thought I might be able to search for her in the 1850 census as a child in Virginia, but her name has been spelled so many different ways that I don't know if I would even recognize it if I came across it.

I have the citation for the piece you quoted about John L.:
The obituary was from the newspaper in Ripley County: "Jan. 23, 1880, John L. Keel, an old highly respected citizen of Ripley County, died of pneumonia at his residence on Fourchee on Monday of last week." (Can you imagine 56 being considered old!)

The same person also included:

1880 mortality schedule for Ripley County -> "Keel, John T. -56 - M - Married - Born: MO - parents: unknown - occupation: blacksmith - died: Jan. - cause: pneumonia - length fo time in county: 56 years." I know this says John T. but it must be the above John L. Very often transcribers mistake T's and L's because of the flowery handwriting. This would make this John L. b. 1824.

Same person again:
James Keel to Narcissus Bennett on Sept. 10, 1871
Sarah Keel to W W Stephens on Feb. !, 1886 (Could be John L.'s second wife)

Yesterday I found the following:
Ripley County, Missouri Marriages
KEEL, FREDRICK MCWILLIAMS, ELIZABETH J. 19 JAN 1854
KEEL, JAMES BENNETT, NARCISSUS 10 SEP 1871
KEEL, JOHN PULLIAM, MARY 5 MAR 1844
KEEL, JOHN G. JOHNSON, MARTHA P. 4 OCT 1872
KEEL, JOSEPH D. LITTLE, ROSETTA 24 FEB 1892
KEEL, JOSHUA TIPPET, SARAH ELIZABETH 28 JAN 1869
KEEL, MAGGIE M. BROWN, WILLIAM 5 JAN 1894
KEEL, MARY MURDOCK, ROBERT K. 17 OCT 1899
KEEL, NANCY PARKER, WILLIAM 6 MAY 1880
KEEL, PARILEE PITCHFORD, CHARLES B. 12 JAN 1873
KEEL, SARAH STEPHENS, W. W. 1 FEB 1866
KEEL, SARAH DAILY, WILLIAM 11 AUG 1844
KEEL, SUSIE WYATT, JOHN W. 31 MAR 1889

I think there is more than one John L. Keel in Ripley County. There is a Hardy Keel in the 1850 census with a son John L. who is 8 years old, which makes birthdate 1842. He could not be the John L. who married Mary Pulliam above in 1844. The John L. in the Mortality census was 56 when he died in 1880, that would make him born 1824.

I read an article online recently but failed to document it.
I am currently not a subscriber to the service regretably, but it stated: On Ancestry. com board -- obituary from newspaper in Ripley County:
"John L. Keel, an old highly respected citzen of Ripley Co., died of pneumonia at this residence, on January 23, 1880."

I would like to know Sarah's maiden name also, as well as the name of John's first wife.

I do know that Joseph L. Keel, their son, married Lusindey Yonce on October 25, 1897 in Lawrence County, Arkansas. (her name is interpreted as Yance, but it is Yonce).
Joe L. died August 15, 1913 in Wagoner County, Oklahoma, of typhoid fever. Lusindey (often spelled many ways, she signed it Mrs. L. S. Keel, or Lousindey Keel, who was with child when he died, raised their children by farming and she never married again. She died March 14, 1944 in rural Broken Arrow, Oklahoma (Wagoner County). She and Joe had seven children. One daughter, died as an infant before they left Red River County, Texas (Anonna?) and another daughter, Hassie, died in 1916 from burns. The other five children lived in this area until their deaths and have many descendants here.

Yonce b. July 1894. Also living with them was another widowed daughter, Esther J. Robinson, b. March 1875, and her two children: Lou A. Robinson (female), b. June 1897 in Arkansas and Walter C. Jalania was born 21 Nov-Dec 1856 in Virginia and died October 27, 1930. She is buried at the White Rock Cemetery in Red River County, Texas.

Lucinda (often refered to as Mrs. L.S. Keel) (Lousindey) (Lusindey) Yonce, was married to Joe L. Keel on Oct. 25, 1897 in Lawrence County, Arkansas. (Her name looks like Yance) on the record I saw and was documented on Ancestry.com marriage records as Yance. But regardless of the correct spelling of her first name, (I have signatures of such from my husband's mother, the moved from Red River County, Texas to Wagoner County, Oklahoma. Joe became ill with typhoid fever and died in Aug. 4, 1913 and is buried at a cemetery by a Lodge on old Highway 51 just north of Coweta, Oklahoma.

Mrs. Keel, who died March 18, 1944 in rural Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, is also buried in the same cemetery, as well as their daughter, Hassie, who died from burns in 1916.
Mrs. Keel, who was expecting at the time of her husband's death, never married again. She farmed and raised their children. She was also called upon by many in the near by areas to be a midwife. She was a good neighbor, going when called on to serve as a midwife, but she would not have been sad to not be called.

My mother-in-law, stated that after Lusindey's mother died, (I thought in Texas like around 1903 or so), she cooked and helped her dad. He would tell her not to go to much trouble to fix anything for him to eath, but jsut fry me some chicken. My mother-in-law would laugh when she told it. (afterall, in those days, all you had to do to fry a chicken, was catch it, wring it neck, dress it out,cut it up and they cook it. ........... not much trouble at all, Ha Ha for a pioneer lady. I do not know when Mr. Richard Yonce died, but I was given the impression that it was before Joe and Lusindey moved to Oklahoma....But I don't know that for certain.

As for Jalaine, or Gelaine, I know she was sickly, and Mr. Yonce moved them around, hoping for improved conditions for her health, but she passed away in Red River County, Texas. Your date is the only one I have ever read, but I believe our lady would have died between 1900 and 1910. I have no documentation as proof.

I know that Esther J. Yonce Robinson's husband was G. W. Robinson. She lived in Mineral Springs, Arkansas at one time and Hermy told me she lived at Texarkana and ran a restaurant.

I just found your post on Lucindy (Lousinday) who married Joseph L. Keel, October 24, 1897, in Lawrence County, Arkansas.

She (Lousinday) is my husband's maternal grandmother. She was widowed in 1913 and raised 6 children alone. Her maiden name was Yonce, although on the record it says Yance, which I believe is just mis-interpreted.
I have been looking for Joseph's father's name and my trail ended with the 1880 Union Twp., Ripley Col, Missouri census also. I would like to know more if you know anything. Thanks
