Kevin, thank you for the response. I should think that your picture of great uncle Peter Keenan is a family keepsake. I am traveling and am using my laptop computer. It does not contain all of my notes which are at my home. I do remember than another person wrote me about Peter Keenan several years ago; however, I cannot recall whether that one identified Peter Keenan's parents and grandparents. Are you able to do that? While this line of Keenans is not mine, insofar as I know, I have been interested in it nevertheless.

Francis Keenan

Hi Colette:
I hope some Keenan researcher is able to utilize your info and connect with your family.
Unfortunately, I had to close the delphi Keenan Surname Researchers Forum as the site itself closed. Ancestry and Genforum and Genesreunited are wonderful sites to research your line.
My Keenan's are from the County Down, IRL area then moved to Cumberland, ENG and from there my line to the Rochester, NY, USA area. I have made connections with others in my tree that have settled in NSW, Australia from the Cumberland, ENG area.
Happy searching. Best regards from Western NY,
Chuck Keenan

Betsy, I just read this message, didn't know you responded to my original post. But anyway, my gg grandfather, Benjamin F Keenen is descended from James & Anna Maria (Sheneman) Keenan. Benjamin's (son of James) obit from 1882 mentions a son Benjamin living in Gap, Lancaster Co. That Benjamin (in Gap) is my gg grandfather. He owned a farm in that area. Had had a total of about 13 children with wife Barbara Glauner. He's even buried in Gap, at the Bellevue Presbyterian Church. I have the estate record for James. Benjamin, son of James, moved to Earl Twp, Lancaster Co and married Mary Norton, whose family was living there also. The Nortons were Presbyterian. Benjamin Sr later moved to Lancaster City then to Reading. When they were planning to move to Reading, they left Benjamin Jr behind to apprecntice to a blacksmith, James Hoas. He lived in Salisbury, which is where Benjamin Jr later took up residence. Barbara Glauner is also from there, her family was Mennonite, buried at Hershey Mennonite Church, or the cemetery for it a very short distance away. Benjmain Jr changed the spelling from Keenan to Keenen for some reason unknown to me. Perhaps he had a falling out with his parents or siblings and didn't want to be associated with them. But he's clearly part of the Keenan family. I always thought that James & Anna Maria were buried at the old St Mary's Episcopal Church on Warwick Road in Elverson. Where did you get the info about them being buried in Romansville? Seems that's about 20-30 min south of where they were living You could be right though. The info I got about them being buried in St Mary's I got from a tombstone or interred listing for that church. It was for the old church, not the one on Morningside Dr.

Hi J.D....I hope you are still with us and checking for responses to your inquiry, even thou my response comes 4 years after your posting!!! This is what I have on James KEENEN [this is the correct spelling]:

James Keenen of West Nantmeal, Chester Co., Pennsylvania. He married Mary Ann Sheneman. They are interred in the Roamansville United Methodist Church Cemetery in Chester Co., PA.

They had 7 children: Benjamin, John, Jacob, James M., Joseph, Maria, and Phoebe.

John Keenen [1808-1880] is my great, great grandfather. He and his wife, Susan Farra Worrilow, lived in Chester (Upper Chichester), Delaware Co., PA. They are interred in Mt. Hope Cemetery in Aston, Delaware Co., PA.

They had 7 children: James Charles, Martha Susan, Ann, Benjamin Worrilow, Winfield, William Samuel [my great grandfather], and Emma.

William Samuel Keenen [1857-1941] married Mary Ella Woodward. They lived in Northbrook, West Bradford Twp., Chester Co., PA. They are interred in Bradford Cemetery in Marshallton, Chester Co., PA.

They had 5 children: Harry Lester, Leah Nora, Edwin James, Charles Winfield [my grandfather], and Elizabeth W. All, but Harry Lester are interred in Bradford Cemetery in Marshallton, Chester Co., PA.

Charles Winfield [known as 'Win'][1890-1941] married Anna Florence Gray. They lived in Kennett Square, Chester Co., PA. He was the fire chief for the Kennett Square Fire Company for 14 years...until his death in 1941.

They had 3 children: Lowell V. (stillborn), Millicent D. (died at age 8 1/2 mos.), and Alan Winfield [my father]. Win, Florence, Lowell and Millicent are interred in Bradford Cemetery in Marshallton, Chester Co., PA.

I don't think your relatve, Benjamin F. KEENEN is from this James KEENEN line, but I'm not sure. I don't have a middle name or initial for our Benjamin Keenen. However, I do have an old news article concerning James Keenen's estate and it mentions both Benjamin & John Keenen:

Chester County PA Archives News.....James KEENEN Estate Notice, 1838

Village Record, December 25, 1838

Estate of James Keenen, deceased. Notice is hereby given, that letters of Administration on the estate of James
Keenen, lat of the township of West Nantmeal, in the County of Chester, dec’d, have been granted to Benjamin
Keenen, of East Earl Township, Lancaster County, and John Keenen, of Upper Chichester, Delaware County; and that
therefore, all persons having claims or demands against the said estate, are requested to present them for
settlement, and those indebted to the estate, to make payment with all convenient promptitude.
(signed) Benjamin Keenen, John Keenen, Adm’rs

Hope you can find some clues in my posting, Betsy Keenen Walker

I saw your posting in reply to an earlier post regarding the Keenans of Troy, NY. I believe our families are related. My great-grandmother was Winifred F. Keenan of Coosan, Athlone, County Westmeath. I recently found the same article you referenced regarding the 50th wedding anniversary of Thomas F, and Nora O"Brien Keenan where it indicates that he was also from Athlone. Winifred married John Charles Tynan in Troy, NY in 1885. A Thomas Keenan is the godfather of their third son (Thomas) and a John Keenan is the godfather of their first daughter (my grandmother, Mary Winifred). My grandmother was the godmother of Thomas and Nora's younger daughter, Winifred F., who I believe was the namesake of my great-grandmother who died in 1903. I have not yet been able to establish whether or not Winifred and Thomas were brother and sister, but it seems clear to me that they were related. Perhaps you have information that will help with that. I realize that it has been a long time since you were in contact with the person who put up the original posting. I hope that you will receive this and will get in touch with me so that we can exchange information.

I have been reviewing past postings for Keenan's from Troy, NY. I believe that our families are related. My great-grandmother was Winifred F. Keenan from Coosan, Athlone, County Westmeath. She married John Charles Tynan in Troy, NY in 1885. Their oldest daughter (my grandmother), Mary Winifred Tynan, was the godmother of Thomas F. and Nora O'Brien Keenan's youngest daughter, Winifred F. Keenan (sister of William T.), who I believe was the namesake of my great-grandmother who died in 1903. Thomas F. Keenan was also from Athlone, County Westmeath. The baptismal certificate of my grandmother's brother Thomas shows that his godfather was a Thomas Keenan (and my grandmother's godfather was a John Keenan). I have not yet been able to establish whether or not he and Winifred were brother and sister but I believe that to be the case. I realize that your posting was from many years ago, but if you receive this please contact me so that we can share information on this Keenan family.
Peter Keenan had died between the times of the 1920 and 1930 Federal Censuses. His wife, Ellen H., born in 1856 in Canada, was living with her son, William B. Keenan, and his family in Marinette, Wisconsin, at the time of the 1930 census. Hope this helps.

Respecting your Francis E. Keenan, here is more about which to think. There was a Hellen F.(yes, spelled with two letter "l"s) Keenan listed as an issue of Peter Keenan, the head of household, in the 1900 census in South Dakota. She was listed as age 1/12 years, or, one month of age. That census was enumerated on June 9, 1900 and indicated that Hellen F. Keenan was born in May.

Then, in Peter Keenan's family in the 1910 census in Holt Co., Nebraska, same family, Hellen is missing. She was to young, about ten years of age, to have been married. Perhaps she died. But, there was a Francis E. Keenan listed in Peter Keenan's household and she was age 9 years. This census was enumerated on May 19, 1910. If this Francis E. Keenan was also the Hellen F. Keenan from the 1900 census, she was born between May 19 and May 31 when she would have been ten years of age. If she was the same person as Hellen and born before May 19, she would have been listed as 10 yrs. of age and not 9 yrs.

Since Hellen was born in May, then another child was not born to Peter and Ellen Keenan in 1900. If Francis E. Keenan had a birthday before May 19, 1910, and was nine years of age when the census was enumerated on May 19th, then she was born in the year 1901. This would make sense for then Hellen was born to Peter and Ellen in 1900 and Francis in 1901. However, if Francis was to have a birthday after the enumeration date of that 1910 census (May 19th, 1910), then she would be age ten years in 1910 and then there would be a case for Francis and Hellen having been the same person since two children could not have been born to Peter and Ellen on separate dates in 1900 if one was born in May. I am ruling out any foster child or adoption situation in this analysis. These conclusions are based upon the assumption that the dates in the two censuses mentioned herein were correct.

If you can find a family Bible with birthdates and names, you will really have something. I do not know where you live but if you get to Holt County or to South Dakota, I would check with the county libraries in those places and see if the genealogical section has historical information or birth/death indices that contain data about your family. Also, you could contact the Holt County Genealogical Society, P.O. Box 376, O'Neill, NE 68763.

Remember however that Francis was listed with the m.i. of "E" in the 1910 census. So, if Hellen F. Keenan is really Francis, then there was a mistake concerning Francis' name in the 1910 census. Mistakes are common in census data but must be proven.

I could not find your Francis Keenan in the 1920 Federal Census. She was about 19 yrs. of age by then and perhaps married.

At Ancestry.com, Ancestry World Tree, I entered Peter Keenan. There were two interested trees there both with a birth year of about 1854 for Peter which would match the age of the Peter Keenan found in the 1910 census for Holt County, Nebraska. Both the Peter Keenans were born in New York. One should be cautious concerning these trees and contact the submitter for documentation.

One tree had the parents of Peter Keenan, born c 1854, as James Keenan and Mary Welch of County Louth, Ireland, and nothing more. You can find this tree at Ancestry World Tree.

The other tree did not list the parents of the Peter Keenan, born c 1854 in New York. But, it did list his wife as one Ellen H. Hogan, born c 1856 in Canada. The age of this woman matches that of the Helen Keenan, wife of Peter Keenan found in the 1910 census for Holt County, Nebraska. The fact that this Ellen has the m.i. of the letter "H" probably indicates that she was your Helen who also was born in Canada. Ellen married Peter about 1884 according to this posted family tree.

Finally, the issue of Peter Keenan and wife Ellen are also very much aligned with the children listed for Peter Keenan and Helen in the 1910 census mentioned above. They were:
Danny, born Feb 1886 in South Dakota. He probably left home or expired prior to the 1910 census where he was not listed. Also there was William B. Keenan, born Sept. 1889 in South Dakota; Mary born May 1891 in South Dakota; and Helen born May 1901 in South Dakota.

This data very much matches the Peter and Helen you mentioned in your message and is too similar to be overlooked if indeed you have the correct Peter and Helen as your ancestors.

Finally, the person posting the data said the main source of it was the census of 1900 for the Bon Homme County of the Dakota Territory. See the Beilcik-Southworth Tree posted in 2004 by Krista Edington. The tree was posted five years ago and at that time, Krista's electronic mail address was:
Buckaroo@somethingorother.com Whether this address remains functional is unknown to me. Perhaps there is some information herein which shall assist your search.

Francis Keenan
Brockport, New York
I reviewed the 1900 Federal Census for South Dakota and the entry for Peter Keenan. The Helen listed as an issue was not born in 1901 as I reported from a family tree. Rather, it is clear from the data that Helen was born in May of 1900. More importantly, her middle initial was the letter "F." I think that Helen is your Francis Keenan. The year of birth matches that reported for her as "Francis" in the 1910 census. Perhaps this information will assist your research.

Francis was not listed in that previous message as the census of 1900 was prior to her date of birth. Keep me informed and I will see what I can learn from the internet. Remember that some data from the internet not documented can be false. However, given what you know, there seems a good chance that the Peter you mentioned is the correct one to be your Francis' parent.

Thanks for the heads up - I had been wondering how someone was listed as born in 1901 yet Francis who was born in 1900 hadn't been listed. That would certainly solve that problem. I'll forward this information to my mother - she never mentioned her mother going by her middle name but I know it happens since my brother is Michael to his family but Pete to his friends (Peter is his middle name).

Understood - when my brother was researching my Dad's ancestory, he ran into a lot of that due to handwritten original sources being hard to decipher.

I was interested by your mention of a son by the name of Peter Keenan. I'm trying to track down my mother's family (her grandfather was a Peter Keenan who lived in Oneill, NE). I just receiving this information from a day ago and am wondering if there is a connection between Keenan and my great-grandfather. Here is the information I received from another poster who responded to my request for any info anyone could give me on my grandmother Frances (Francis) Keenan:
"You mention that Francis Keenan was grandmother in the title of your post. As an aside, the given name Francis generally denotes a male. However, the 1910 Federal Census for Shields Township, Holt County, Nebraska, does list a Francis E. Keenan, age 9, d/o Peter E. Keenan, age 56, farmer, and his wife, Ellen H., age 54. There are other issue in the household. Anyway, the Francis E. Keenan was clearly listed as a female with the letter "i" in the given name dotted.

Also, in the census above which you no doubt have reviewed, Peter E. Keenan was listed as born in New York, his father and mother in Ireland. Helen was listed as born in Canada, her father and mother in Ireland and Canada respectively. Francis E. Keenan and her siblings were all listed as having been born in South Dakota.
If I remember correctly, Mom told me that her mother was born on May 25, 1900. That would seem to allow a tie-back to the Hellen F Keenan from South Dakota to the Francis E Keenan in Holt Nebraska.

The information you've sent is fascinating. I forwarded both your postings to my mother for review. She did confirm that her dad (Francis' husband) was "Harry" Waldron - she wasn't sure if that was his formal name or a diminutive of Harold. She also didn't know her grandmother's maiden name. As a point of clarification: When you listed the issue of Peter Keenan and wife Ellen you listed Danny, William, Mary & Helen born in South Dakota. Was Francis listed also or did you leave her off the list because you were only listing her siblings? Was there any reference to a Jim or a James as my mother said she had an uncle Jim who I thought was from her mother's side of the family. The James Keenan and Mary Welch mntioned in your post recent postings could easily be ancestors as Mom said talked about a Mary as her grandmother but it could easily have been a great grandmother (which would line up with the additional information you sent)since she they had all passed by the time she was able to understand what a grandparent was. Thank you again for everything you've offered and once Mom has a chance to digest your postings which I forwarded to her and has a chance to talk to her older sister and her sister-in-law, I'll be happy to keep you updated but would understand if you're prefer to be left out of the loop past this point.

Thanks for the clarification - I'll be happy to update you as we confirm or put aside any of the information you've so generously gathered for us. And I'll heed your warning regarding the authenticity of the information and the need for verification. But I can assure you - it's terrific having the opportunity to verify anything given the very limited information we've had to go on for so many years.
Thanks again and I'll be in touch.
