Becky,
It's been almost a year to the day since you posted asking if I knew how my grandfather John Shuflin Shirlen got his middle name. It was passed down through the family that he was delivered by a Dr. Shuflin (or Shufflin), but I have not been able to locate a Dr. Shuflin in any records for the area where my grandfather was born (McDowell County, North Carolina) If you (or anyone else) have information on a Dr. Shuflin from that area of North Carolina the the late 1860's, I would love to hear from you. Thanks! Pat Sherlin Childress

My name is Wayne Clifton Keeter, Jr. My father's father was Cliff Keeter, and they had a farm in Merry Hill, NC! Cliff's father was Joseph... so I'm pretty sure we must be somehow related! How cool! :) My dad is no longer living, and I've been wanting to find out more about my roots and his family. Dad's mom was Annie Blanch Outlaw Keeter, and his siblings were Scott Keeter and Shirley Keeter (Zaludek). Scott and his wife live in Charlotte, NC, and Shirley and her husband live in Coronado, California. I'm 32 years old, and live in Asheville, NC! Does this make any connections!? Nice to 'meet' you!
WCK

Rapids but has little knowledge of ancestry—his father Bernard Franklin died when he was 10—but his grand father lived into his 90’s so I had the priviledge of knowing him (my great grandfather)when I was a boy (He was Charles Franklin Keeter and died in 1982)

Any help to uncovering our ancestry is appreciated!!!!

Thanks in advance!

John M.
The first Keeter to America

The first Keeter immigrant was William Keeter (spelled Kitto in records). He was born ca 1640 in England, probably Cornwall, and was in the Virginia Colony, Surry County, by 1664. Apparently all future generations descend from him, as far as Keeters in the South. By the 1700's there were Keeters in the Northeastern states also, and it is unknown by this researcher from whom they descend.
Caleb: I hope you get this reply. The first Keeter came to America ca 1660. He was born ca 1640 in England, probably in Cornwall. His name was William Kitto (Keeter) and he settled in the Virginia Colony, Surry County. One of his descendants, James, was in Rutherford County, NC, by 1790. Several of his descendants moved to Arkansas in the mid to late 1800's. Gary Keeter

Re: BOOK-Dictionary of the Keeters

Based upon research by Gary Keeter, Henry Keeter appears to be the son of James Keeter by a 1st marriage. Henry was the executor of James' will in Rutherford Co. NC written in 1801and the reason that he was not mentioned as an heir in the will is probably due to the fact that he was already established in Rutherford Co. and was therefore not in need of any further financial assistance.
Henry Keeter was first noted in Rutherford Co. NC records in 1785 when he was named as a road juror. Henry is next noted in 1789, when he married Elizabeth Coxey. Henry was listed in the 1790 Census residing in the 8th Co. Militia District, Rutherford Co. NC. This district was on the 2nd Broad River along Camp Creek. His household listed 1m>16, 1m<16, 2f. Henry purchased 250 acres of land in 1792 in Rutherford Co. NC "on both sides of Mountain (Cherry) Creek" near the 2nd Broad River. In 1800 Henry's household listed 2m<10, 1m-10/16, 1m-26/45, 1f<10, & 1f-16/45. Elizabeth Coxey Keeter apparently died between 1820 & 1830.
Henry left a will in 1843 which named three of his children, Aden, Icabod and Amy. It has been postulated that Henry had at least three other sons, who, for some reason, [two may have been deceased and one moved from the area] were not mentioned in his will - James, Joshua and John. The females other than his wife in Henry's household in 1790 & 1800 have not been identified. Two females listed in other family histories as daughters of James Keeter, Elizabeth, b. cir 1789 and Mary, b. cir 1791, may well have been daughters of Henry Keeter.
[Updated 12/19/05]

Henry md. 14 Aug. 1789 in RCNC to Elizabeth Cooksey who was born about 1765-1770, and whom this author thinks might have been the daughter of John (Jno) Coxey listed in the 1790 RCNC Census. Elizabeth died between 1830-1840. Henry and Elizabeth had 4 sons (maybe 5) and a daughter. The two known sons being Aden, b. 20 Aug. 1798 and Icabod, b.abt 1804 and the daughter Amy b abt 1802. Much speculation has been made by different researchers as to the identity of the other two sons who apparently died before Henry’s will of 1843 as they were not named in his will. It is this author’s belief , backed by circumstantial evidence that James Keeter b. 1794-1802and died between 1840-1850 was one of the unknown sons.

Hope this helps you.
Barbara McEntire
