Catherine and Robert Keeton were appellants in the settlement of the estate of John Keeton. The case went to the supreme court of MO, filed in 1854, originating in St. Francois Co, MO. One of the respondents in the case was William Keeton (brother of John). I have sent for the record of the proceedings. Also an appellant was Clarissa Bennett my gr gr grandmother, who was the daughter of John Keeton (and Elizabeth?). Clarissa married Hutchinson King Bennett in Franklin CO., TN in 1838. He died in 1847. They had 3 children: John King Bennett , Lycurgus L Bennett and Mary Elizabeth Bennett. She married John Kennerly in Franklin CO., TN. in 1848. The heirs to the estate of John Keeton, the appellants, were seeking return of the slaves that William sold after John's death.

What part of England did most Keeton's originate from. I understand that name is after the village named Ketton in the county of Rutland, but I was wondering if there are any other areas the Keetons lived in England or Ireland before immigrating to the States.

Finis Kennedy has never been found on the 1850 census, he is on the 1860 Tishomingo, MS. census and thats it. He died in a civil war hospital at Griffin, GA. in 1865.

His civil war records give his middle initial as "E". So if he gave his middle name on the 1850 census that would be great if I knew what it was. He was born according to the 1860 census in Alabama.

Where did your Alford reside? Maybe that would help. No doubt Finis moved around, his first child was born in Tn. and the rest of them in MS.

Hi Wayne,

Yes I knew Coline had several children with his first wife. I heard from a lady in Texas a few months ago that was a descendant of one of his sons by Saluda. Can't find her e-mail right now, but if I do I will send it in case you haven't exchanged info with her.

Finas and Sarah had two ther children that were married before the 1800 census. Sarah the oldest married Francis Marion Bourland, they lived in Colbert Co, Al. for a few years then moved to Hill County, Texas about 1881. Then my gr-grandmother Mary Kennedy wed Thomas Inman at Barton 1860's, have the date, but forgot it. All they did was just move across the river to what is now Prentiss County and probrable farmed the same land that Finis had before he went to war.

You probrable have these dates, but will send them anyway.

Oak Hill Baptist Cemetery, Blackland Community, Prentiss Co.

Occupation Farmer, Evelin age 5, and the 3 boys,as well as Sarah s children from the Finis Kennedy marriage,Leathy age 16, Canedy W age 18?
They moved to Mississippi after the 1880 Census, C E also is listed on earlier Census records as COLD IRON Keeton. He had a large family of 10,with his first wife Saluda Gibbs.
Yes, those three boys were Empson, Emmett, and Oscar. Half brothers to my great grandmother Mary Kennedy who wed Thomas Inman. My grandfather's name was Sidney Oscar Inman, just guessing, but he probrable got his middle name from his half Uncle Oscar Keeton. The three Keeton boys also had a younger sister named Evelin who was age 5 in 1880, don't know what happened to her.

An Inman cousin once told me that Coline E and Sarah Keeton had a grocery store when they lived in Colbert Co., AL, don't know if this is true.

Glad you mentioned Coline's middle name (Edgar) I always wondered what his middle initial stood for.

On the 1860 Tishomingo census he is living with his wife and 2 daughters and there is a George Kennedy, age 17 living with them. No doubt a relative, but have never found what relation he is or whatever happened to him.

My Keeton ancestors were in Albemarle County, VA about the time your David Keeton was born but I don't have him in my family line. I'm looking for the parents of a John Keeton believed to have been born about 1780 in the portion of VA that later became KY.

Your OH Keetons probably traveled from VA to OH by way of the famous Wilderness Road that took them through Cumberland Gap and up through KY. Some of my line traveled that route and settled in KY before going on to TN. The Wilderness Road was the only wagon road open across the Appalachian Mountains. Does your David have a son, John, who might have been born about 1780?

Military Land Warrant William Keeton and Edmund Keeton

Can anyone please assist me with finding the county of location of the following tract of land:

It is listed as Military Warrant 3644.0 on the Kentucky Secretary of State's Office web site Land Office under Revolutionary War Warrant http://apps.sos.ky.gov/land/military/revwar/Revdetail.asp?Ty....

The warrant was issued by Virginia for William Keeton and Edmund Keeton for 200 acres of land in, apparently, what became Kentucky. Issued in 1784 for military service and assigned to John Keeton, heir-at-law.

If I can find where the land is, that will be a strong clue where these Keetons, possibly my ancestors, were living. Thank you for any help at all.
This is not the Arthur Keeton Christel is looking for. Christel, you are (were) married to Bill, correct. My mother, Paralee, was Arthur's sister. You were right - he has a brother who lives in Tonganoxie. Are you still in Lawrence. I talked with Bill before. Please email me - should Bill still want info.

Diana

Hello,I m from Mississippi, but during the late 1950's we lived in Far Rockaway. Our neighbors were also Keeton's who had lived there for years.I was very young but I remember my dad discussing possible connections with the neighbors. Since we also had Kennedy relatives, they were able to make a connection.Seems the New York Kennedy's were first cousins to our Alabama Kennedy cousins.

Keetons in Georgia

Hi! I'm doing research on the Keeton side of my tree. They were mostly located in the Walton, Gwinnett, and Athens/ Clarke County areas. I have gone back as far as my gggg-grandfather and would love to find out more. They are listed in the 1850 census as mulatto, but I suspect otherwise. There has always been a belief that the family originates from the Oklahoma area. Apparently, there is some strange tale of mystery involving a curse and their migration to the east. The lineage goes as follows:

William Keeton(1795)> Isaac Keeton(1827)>Louis Keeton(1875)> Colley Keeton(1896)> Lewis Keeton(1916).

Any help unraveling this story would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Re: Keeton Pioneers In America
It is good to hear from you and good to meet another Keeton researcher. The line I am tracing came to America through Jamestown, VA. The first Keeton to arrive in VA was not one of the original settlers in 1607 but we believe two brothers from Kent, England, John and James, names spelled Keiton, arrived about 1610 according to evidence found in the British Records Office. My Keeton line runs back to John Keiton. He died in York County, VA prior to 1623, leaving a wife, Mary Pryor Keiton, and young son, William. It is possible that John Keiton was murdered in the terrible Indian Massacre of 1622 but we have no conclusive evidence of that.

I am definitely interested in the Keeton information you have and look forward to hearing from you. The message I tried to send to walterppk138@yahoo.com failed.
