KELLER, Leonard B., Medal of Honor - Vietnam

Leonard B. "Len" Keller (February 25, 1947 – October 18, 2009)

For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty. Sweeping through an area where an enemy ambush had occurred earlier, Sgt. Keller's unit suddenly came under Intense automatic weapons and small-arms fire from a number of enemy bunkers and numerous snipers in nearby trees. Sgt. Keller quickly moved to a position where he could fire at a bunker from which automatic fire was received, killing 1 Viet Cong who attempted to escape. Leaping to the top of a dike, he and a comrade charged the enemy bunkers, dangerously exposing themselves to the enemy fire. Armed with a light machine gun, Sgt. Keller and his comrade began a systematic assault on the enemy bunkers. While Sgt. Keller neutralized the fire from the first bunker with his machine gun, the other soldier threw in a hand grenade killing its occupant. Then he and the other soldier charged a second bunker, killing its occupant. A third bunker contained an automatic rifleman who had pinned down much of the friendly platoon. Again, with utter disregard for the fire directed to them, the 2 men charged, killing the enemy within. Continuing their attack, Sgt. Keller and his comrade assaulted 4 more bunkers, killing the enemy within. During their furious assault, Sgt. Keller and his comrade had been almost continuously exposed to intense sniper fire as the enemy desperately sought to stop their attack. The ferocity of their assault had carried the soldiers beyond the line of bunkers into the treeline, forcing snipers to flee. The 2 men gave immediate chase, driving the enemy away from the friendly unit. When his ammunition was exhausted, Sgt. Keller returned to the platoon to assist in the evacuation of the wounded. The 2-man assault had driven an enemy platoon from a well prepared position, accounted for numerous enemy dead, and prevented further friendly casualties. Sgt. Keller's selfless heroism and indomitable fighting spirit saved the lives of many of his comrades and inflicted serious damage on the enemy. His acts were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the U.S. Army.

CMOHS.org http://www.cmohs.org/recipient-detail/3326/keller-leonard-b....

Wikpedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leonard_Keller
Just a further note, if you do a google search for Sydenham Keller, you'll find a match under google books, and an excerpt from a law journal. Sydenham's wife, Louisa, and his son, Horatio, died of pneumonia within days of each other in May of 1907. As such there was debate over their estate, which became Pennsylvania case law.

This Keller is not in my line and I would gladly send it to someone who's line these people are in. This marriage was performed in 1909. George is listed as being 28 and Ada is 29 years of age at that time. I hope I can get this to a decendent of their's.

Hello, I just came across this post. My home was once owned by Sydenham and his wife Louisa. I think at one point I looked them up in the census reports and his profession was listed as 'tip staff.' I'd be interested in knowing what court or judge he worked for, and if there is any chance of a photograph in/around the home still surviving. He would have bought the home shortly before his death. Thanks

I just realized that your massacre date is different than mine, and I don't know why this is- I had read about another massacre, I think in Virginia, that involved Keller's and took place on Christmas, but don't know- seems highly unlikely there'd be too, and I'd be surprised if the Indians ventured as far as Virginia- but what do I know! I'd be pretty assured of the Sept date for the delaBole massacre, which really just involved one person (everyone else escaped, or was let escape) They may have wanted Christian's blonde scalp, which may have been worth more to them. The Sept date has been passed down by my family who seemed to have kept good records. Maybe you can discover more. Please do let me know what you find out! I'm working on a family website right now. Barbara Lambert

Good to hear of your interest- anything you could find out would be welcome! I'm getting this from a book called "The History of the Aaron Keller Family" by Donald C. Keller, who self-published it in 1967- I think there is the text of this on the ancestry site, too. This attack happened as a result of the "French and INdian War". There had been peace with Indians in the area, but the French incited the Indians in the hopes of taking over the land from the settlers in eastern Pa. This attack was on 15 September 1757. They murdered and scalped the son Christian and took Maria Keller the mother and her two sons captive- Joseph and Jacob. They were taken to Montreal Canada, to the French fort, about 400 miles by foot. The mother was sold to the French and became a servant for a French officer, Joseph was adopted by an Indian brave who'd lost his son. I've read that they were Iroquois, but I don't know where I read that. The Indians returned to the area many times and were seen, even came into Joseph Keller's house when they were away. Eventually, in Sept 1760, the French forts at Quebec and Montreal were captured by the British. Maria was freed and returned home, arriving on the 20 Oct 1760. Joseph also returned after 7 years in captivity, and was very skilled with the bow and arrow. One story says that the other boy Jacob never returned, and Joseph and Maria had a son later who they called Jacob too.Does this help? I'd like to know if they know where "The Massacre Tree" is located on the old Keller farm? Christian is buried under this tree.

Hello! My grandson is doing a ninth grade report on the Seminole Indians. He lives with me. We were talking about the Indians who lived around here. (Pen Argyl, Pennsylvania- about a half mile from Delabole- where I grew up as a child.) I told him about the massacre that happened many years ago as it was a story my father would often tell. The homestead was close to where I lived. The only thing I would like to know is if you know the the name of the tribe? I would like to know more about this incident. Since I live so very close I think I will investigate. Are there any questions you would like me to ask the people being interviewed? Thank you Martha

Sue,
We were in VB from '88-94. I worked for a company that transferred me from Pasadena, CA to VB, then to Ft. Smith, AR. It is indeed a small world.

Mary Harris is a cousin. She's Meyer "Billy" Keller's granddaughter from his first marriage. My Mom knew her Uncle Billy since she was a child but never knew of his first marriage or that he had a child. She only knew of his second marriage, which didn't produce any children.

Marie is a mystery I'd very much love to solve. According to my Chicago relatives, she was the "black sheep" of the family - married and moved away, not wanting anyone to know of her Jewish roots. The name Prescott Murphy was given to me by relatives, but I have nothing to back it up. The Prescott in both names seems too much to be coincidence - I'd be inclined to trust the marriage record, but who knows. Perhaps they wanted to disappear. The part about her acting is also passed from a relative.

Then there's the name change. Everyone in the family seems to believe this, but I can't find a shred of evidence, so who knows?

Finally, how do you pronounce Boester?

Jim

Hi Sue, thanks for your reply. I pulled a lot of facts from your tree - knew most of the names & relationships, but not the dates, etc. I don't have Ida's obit, just the death cert. Don't have access to the newspaper as I've never been to St. Louis.
Audrey and her daughter were great sources of info for me. I haven't talked to them in a long time, though.
Tom is a new Dad - we just returned from CA where we saw the baby for the first time in addition to celebrating my Mom's 80th b'day.
Interesting that you're in Chesapeake. My wife & I lived in Virginia Beach for 6 years.
Are you still trying to reach Mary Harris? I can contact her to let her know if you want. She has been a great help to me.
The big mystery relating to Joseph & Ida is "whatever became of Marie?" I've heard stories, but.....
Please let me know if there's anything you think I can help with. Jim

Hello, I'm another cousin. My gfather was Louis Keller, son of Joseph & Ida. I have significant info on Louis's decendents and others, but many questions about others in this line. One correction to your tree - Audrey Howard Allison didn't die in 1980. I spoke with her about 10 years ago. I'm definitely interested in sharing info. Jim

My John Stephen Keller was born in Ranspach, Haut-Rhin, Alsace, France and, after immigrating to America, first settled in PA. He lived in Greene Township, Erie County, PA. He married Barbara Elizabeth Hesselschwerdt in 1844 and together they had 14 children, all born in Erie County, PA. That I know of, there was not a child named Susannah. John and several of his children later moved to Leitchfield, KY prior to 1870. Please let me know if you discover a connection, or if you have more questions - happy to share what I know!

I am trying to research the Storts family from Perry County Ohio. Anyone with information would be most helpful. I am trying to find the parents of Isaac Storts who was born about 1815 in Perry County and lived in Bearfield. His wife was a Kezia Long and they had a daughter named Elizabeth.
I have heard Isaac's parents could be John Jacob Storts and Elizabeth Harter but I have found no one that can confirm this. Thanks again for any help.
My email is tonya.shipley@yahoo.com

I have much info on this family and would appreciate more info on your branch. Go to RootsWeb, then WorldConnect Project Main Page, then at "Jump to a Specific Database" enter EDCLGENEALOGY1 and enter. Note if I have entered an update of today or later. I need to update it with info from proving that William V Keller's wife is Maria Vickroy which I recently did (meaning moving from suspicion to proof).
I will be most happy to share all the notes and other info on this family and their ancestors I know of. During the last year I have met Danny Keller of Cumberland Co MD who has been researching this family for many years.
We welcome you and others join the search.
William V Keller b.abt.1796PA has his oldest son William Keller b.abt.1820.PA(we refer to as William V B Keller because he is listed by both V and V in various records and have found no proof of what is actually correct) also living in Allegany Co MD in 1850 with Knox Keller, likely the father of William V Keller b.1796.PA.
William V Keller was sheriff of Bedford Co PA 1839-1842.
I have much more info on this family since my last update of the RootsWeb site Sept 7, 2009.
I have also written "the case for William V Keller and Maria Vickroy" Sept 2009 that proves these 2 people are the pair that were married. The ancestry of Maria Vickroy seems to be fairly well known and well researched, although I have not yet had time to complete verifying the info.
You can contact me directly at enlseldomread @ cinci.rr.com after removing the spaces before and after @.
KellyGen,
I believe you are researching Ann Elizabeth or Elizabeth Ann Kaylor, dau of Peter Kaylor and Elizabeth (Anna Elizabeth) Adams. She married Peter Shanefelter on 31 Jan 1819 at Conewago Chapel, now Adams Co, PA. She died 7 July 1833, leaving 3 sons and 2 daughters, and is buried at Conewago Chapel, now Adams Co, PA.
"The Second Volume of Collections and Recollections in the Life and Times of Cardinal Gibbons" by John T Reily; published Martinsburg, WV 1892 has a short history of the Shanefelter family. You can find this book on line with a Google search for "Peter Shanefelter".
The book lists the wife of Peter Shanefelter Jr as Ann Elizabeth Kealer whose parents lived at Loretto in Cambria Co. Please check some on line family trees and perhaps post to the Cambria Co message board to verify as I am just beginning to research this Kaylor family and do not have all church records at this time.
siblings:
Peter Kaylor Jr married Agnes Leavy (or Levi), she dau of James Leavy & Catherine Byrne on 28 April 1816 at St. Michael's Church, Loretto, Cambria Co, PA

James (or Jacob) Kaylor married Catherine McConnell on 23 April 1816 at St. Michael's Church, Loretto, Cambria Co, PA

Catharine Kaylor married Mathias Behe on 26 March 1818 at St. Michael's, Loretto, Cambria Co, PA

Theresa Kaylor married John Scanlan, probably at St. Michael's, Loretto, Cambria Co (have not confirmed)

Regards, Jane Tripp

Hello Amber,

I am Lillian's maternal grand-daughter. Unfortunately, I have nothing but bad news for you. Your message is the very first reply I've had to my query nine years ago. I know nothing about what happened to Fred, and I'm afraid I'll have to, finally, concur with my Gran and accept that something happened to Fred after he arrived in America. Either that, or he chose to disappear.

The other bad news is that Lillian also died, in 2006. I had hoped to find Fred before she died because it had preyed on her mind for most of her life.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news...

Belinda.

Hi Jim,
I have been in contact with Tom in the past concerning your family and have had access to the family tree. Did not know that the Audrey I had found a California Death notice for was not our Audrey. Removed that information this morning. If I have anything you need I would be glad to share it with you. I do have some family pictures of Ida that I came into just recently although I may have posted most of them on my tree. I can look if you are interested. I also recently found much more information about her marriage to Arnstein. I saw on the message boards several years ago that someone offered up Ida's obituary from the St Louis Post Dispatch. If you have that I would love to have it as I can only get things from that paper by going to St Louis which only happens about once a year. Please let me know if there is anything I can help you with or anything else you may have noticed I have incorrect. Thanks Sue......did Tom's wife have the baby?

Jim,
Isn't it a small world....why were you in VB? Makes you wonder how many people we come in contact with that we are distantly related to every day. My brother did DNA and we posted it on Ancestry but haven't had much luck so far.

I really only wanted to contact Mary Harris to tell her how much her posting of Ida's picture meant to me. It was the first time I saw her and I was overwhelmed with my own likeness to her. I thought I remembered a posting that said she had Ida's obituary but it may have been death cert. Is she a cousin?

I have to say that hunting Marie has been a passion for me. I found and posted a marriage record which I am not sure is hers but I find it interesting that the husbands name is Clyde Prescott and the name several family members had listed as her spouse was Prescott Murphy. I usually save possibles to the shoebox but I was hoping to get a bite from someone by posting this marriage record on my tree.

I have also been trying to find more information on the movie. I found a movie listed on IMBD....."Her Ball and Chain", released in 1924 and directed by Slim Summerville but can't verify the cast. Share with me what you have heard. Curiosity is getting to me.

Tom told me there was some indication that Joseph Keller changed his name when he came to America. Perhaps to shield his Russian heritage? Keller is a high german word for an occupation which just doesn't seem right for a Russian.

I can remember my grandmother talking about her grandmother speaking both Polish and Yiddish. I also remember attending Laura Keller Howard's funeral with my dad when I was about 12. It was my first exposure to the Jewish faith that he had told me his mother was raised in.
