Kelly Family who lived in Manchester

I have reached a 'dead end' in my family history search. John Kelly, born 1835 (?) died 1880 was born in Ireland but I have no idea where. Don't even know where to start. He married Mary (born 1841 in Manchester). The family appears on UK census in 1871 but not before that. IF I was to start a search in Ireland, where would I start? John Kelly is a very common name.
