Dear Stephen,
Thanks for your update regarding the Kelso names. The family connection to the Barnett family was also known of but without any proof. Was there also a James Kelso Jnr., with the George and sisters Anna, Jane and Elizabeth? As Charles Webb was born in America there is a chance that his parents were married there too possibly in Philadelphia because Charles was brought from there (by James Kelso we think) at the age of 3 because he was by then orphaned. Hoping that you are able to answer some of these question, I remain yours sincerely, Alan Robson

1889 Biography of Joseph Kelso

JOSEPH KELSO, b.abt 1820

Many of the strongest characters in American history were born and reared in the North of Ireland. This was largely due to the great social and religious conflict among the people which deveoped the greatest powers of the naturally strong and sturdy race. One of these distinguished citizens is the gentleman of whom we now write. He is a prominent resident of Bellevue and was born in the North of Ireland about the year 1820. His father, Joseph Kelso, was a minister of the Church of the Seceders of Scotland. He was a gentleman of spendid education and great strength of character, and under his tutorship our subject received his educational training, also attending the schools of the neighborhood. In 1840 our subject came to America, taking passage at Belfast on an American sailing vessel, which, after a voyage of forty days landed him in New York City.
Shortly after his arrival in this country Mr. Kelso went to Virginia where he remained for about one year, when he went to Pike County, Ohio, and for a short time thereafter we find him at work as a clerk in a mercantile store. During this time to increase his income he taught a private school and about the year 1844, began the study of law at Piketon, Ohio. For the following eighteen months he read diligently in the office of N.K. Plough. He then removed to Galena, Ill. where he completed his studies with J.M. Douglas, then a prominent lawyer of Galena, but now a resident of Chicago. He was examined by two of the Judges of the Supreme Court of Illinois, and it may be said to his credit, passed the critical test quite satisfactorily, and he was duly admitted to the practice of law. He hung out his shingle in the city of Galena, and for the following two years passed through that ordeal known to every young man embarking in professional life. He felt that there was a better opportunity for him across the river in Iowa, and we therefore find him, in 1848, moving his effects over to Bellevue. This city at that time was the county seat of Jackson County, and naturally offered splended inducements to a studious and enterprising young lawyer. Here our subject entered upon a career of thirty years at the bar, and became one of the legal lights, not only of Jackson County, but of the western part of the State.
During the period above alluded to, the Hon. Mr. Kelso served as Judge of Jackson County, during the term from 1859 to 1861. He was called upon to serve the people as their Prosecuting Attorney for the county for several terms. This position as we might reasonably suppose he filled with great credit to himself, and satisfaction to his constituents. He has also served as Mayor of Bellevue, for a number of terms, and in every public and private capacity has always had at heart the growth and prosperity of Bellevue. He has contributed a great deal toward its advancement, and to-day is known as one of the most respected and valued of the pioneer citizens of the town.
The Judge is one of those sturdy self-made men we so frequently meet in our Western country. Beginning life with little or no means, by close application and great energy, guided by good common sense, he has been able to accumulate considerable property. In 1868 he went into the banking business and since then has been known as one of the reliable financiers of Bellevue.
Judge Kelso was united in marriage, first with Eliza Cressy, who bore him two children - Walter C., who is now cashier in the Merchants' Bank, at Crookston, Minn., and William, a banker at Hollock, Minn. The second marriage of Mr. Kelso, was with Sophia F. Shaw, of Maquoketa - this county. This lady became the mother of three children - Carrie, who is now at Oberlin College, Joseph and Jennie.
It is certainly gratifying for a gentleman like Judge Kelso to look back upon a career so successful as regards his personal prosperity, and also upon the splended advancement made by the community all about him. When he crossed the Father of Waters, the country was comparatively in its primitive condition, and where to-day thriving cities and prosperious villages are located, could then be seen the smoke curling upward from the savage's wigwam, and where the steam engine drawing its heavily laden train winds its way through the valleys, was only the trail of the red man and the home of the wolf, the deer, and the buffalo. No one has contributed more toward the magnificent transformation than has the gentleman of whom we write. He is to-day one of the landmarks of the olden time; a gentleman of ripe experience, splendid business sagacity, and sterling integrity, and no man is more deserving of prominent mention in a work like this, designed to chronicle the careers and achievements of the best people of the community, than the Hon. Joseph Kelso. He has been a lifelong Democrat and has labored diligently for the advancement and growth of the principles of that party. Althought not a member of any Church, his religious faith tends toward that of the Presbyterian Church.
("Portrait and Biographical Album of Jackson County, Iowa", originally published in 1889, by the Chapman Brothers, of Chicago, Illinois.)
Mary Lou: I am looking for Mandanea Kelso, b. Abt 1828 Alabama, married James A. Cunningham b. 1823 Alabama. They were living in DeWitt County according to 1860, 1870 & 1880 census. Mandana is such an unusual name and since James Kelso had a sister named Mandana, I believe she is probably the daughter of James Kelso. Someone wrote his name and a few words with a date on the front page. You can barely read what was written but I can see his name and a date with the year begining with 18...
I'm moving and getting rid of a bunch of stuff. Just thought it would be nice if I found the ancestors to give this.

Here's some information on William Hall Kelso.

BORLAND-NOTES:(circa 1903)"William H. born Feb. 24, 1847 was married Dec. 21, 1870 to Mina C. Craig of Marion, Indiana County, Pa. They had six childred of whom two are living. Anna Jane born Nov. 20, 1876, married Arthur McFadden an attorney of Santa Ana, Cal. They have one child, Mary Edith is at home with her parents, Inglewood, Cal."

A booklet published in1987 by the Historical Society of Centinela Valley, California, is titled "A Name Lives on at William H. Kelso Elementary School" The front cover has a photograph of William H. Kelso 1847-1915. There is also a picture of the Elementary School located at 809 E. Kelso Street.

"Do you know who William H. Kelso was? Do you know why he was considered so outstanding that it was decided to name a school and a street in his honor?
The honor was richly deserved and it is unfortunate that it was not bestowed until ten years after his death August 16, 1915. The school was dedicated in April of 1925, constructed at a cost of $48,473. Twelve lots had been purchased on August 30, 1910 for $4,200 because the need for school expansion was already seen. That area of Inglewood was then called East Acres.
William H. Kelso was one of Inglewood's most highly revered pioneeer citizens, contributing greatly to the betterment of Inglewood. For nearly 30 years he worked tirelessly toward the building and beautifying of the city. He came here when the townsite was first opened, bought 60 acres of land just outside its boundaries and three blocks inside the choicest residential property bounded by what are now Hillcrest and Kelso Streets.
His first home, a lovely two-story house, stood where Inglewood's main post office is today. Later another was built at Spruce and Kelso Streets. It burned and was replaced by another at the same location. For many years he engaged in both a retail and wholesale nursery business and was responsible for setting out whole blocks of trees and shrubs trying to make the city beautiful. The lovely big trees on Hillcrest remain a monument to his efforts.
He worked tirelessly for the movement to incorporate Inglewood as a city. It took effect February 7, 1908 and Kelso became president of the first Board of Trustees, serving from 1908 to 1914. He is generally spoken of as the first Mayor of Inglewood.
He and his wife, the former Mina Craig, whom he had married in Pennsylvania, were charter members of the First Presbyterian Church of Inglewood when it was organized on January 19, 1890 with 14 members.
He was on the Board of Trustees of Occidental College-----
He was elected on the Republican ticket to the Califorina State Assembly in 1902 and served one term.---------
He organized the Bank of Englewood-----
He was First Vice President of the Citizens Bank-----
Kelso was a wealthy man because before he came to Califorina oil had been discovered in 1877 on the 160 acre family homestead in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania where he had been born February 24, 1847. His parents had come from Kelso, Scotland and were prominent for many years in Agriculture and coal mining developments.
The oil field was a rich one. In the first year eight wells produced 200,000 barrels of oil, and 20 years later three of those wells were still producing. It was in 1887 that Kelso brought his family to Pasadena where he started a real estate business and soon heard of the wonderful new town that was just being developed on 11,000 acres of Daniel Freeman's 25,000 acre Rancho Centinela.
----(The Kelsos) had two daughters, Edith Calkins and Anna McFadden.-----
----The Kelso family continued to be influential in Inglewood for many years after his death (1915). Mina Kelso survived her husband by 20 years, dying in 1935 at age 89. -----
One daughter, Anna McFadden, lived in Santa Ana after her marriage, but Edith remained in Inglewood and married Lyman Oral Calkins of another pioneer family that had come from Nebraska in 1894.-----They had four children, William, Lyman, Almina, and Elizabeth."

Hope this is of interest. I have a lot more on the Kelso's of Allegheny and Washington counties, PA
Bill Blackstock, wblack@hal-pc.org
HI,
My Kelsos are from Riverton Nebraska. My father Byron Eugene, His father Harry Eugene, His father or grandfather, not sure which is Stephen Douglas Kelso who Married Clara Katherine Clow and had Children Oak Lee Kelso, Oda Kelso, Carl Kelso, Harry? Stella, Nellie, May, and Jessie Kelso Reams Who maybe your relative also.
On my grandfathers(Harry Kelso)Death Cert it lists Stephen as his father and May Cooper as his mother, so I am not sure what the situation was, I was told he had a 1/2 brother Homer Cooper, that harry was raised by his grandparents, that oak, oda and carl were his brothers and his uncles, Really don't know what the truth is. That is the answers I am looking for. Who is Homer Cooper and should my maiden name have been Cooper and not Kelso, since it appears May was my greatgrandmother? Hope this helps and If you have any info please pass it on to me also, I do have Birth/death dates ect. if this is the Jessie you are looking for. Best Regards, Wendy Whiteman

Levi William Kelso??

Two questions, does anyone know what happened to Levi after 1900 and/or does anyone have a photo of Levi. We have a mystery in our family in that we have a grandfather who went by the name Lee Williams. He rarely spoke of his past. What we know is that he came from Nebraska, was born near Dunbar on Nov 14, 1888. His Father is said to be Nehemiah and mother Anna Hill. He talked of the Platte River and being about 100 miles from Lincoln city for a time. He spoke of a younger brother by the name of Charles that died very young. Had five uncles and spent a lot of time at he grandparents. He said he was on his own(age 12) after his grandparents were killed in a runaway accident and they died three days apart(?). He also said his parents died of influenza(?). The problem is this...we can not find any trace of Lee before 1917 when he filled out his draft registration for WW1. And yet the few family stories we have of Lee's early life are disturbingly parallel to Levi William Kelso's early life that is easly traceable up to 1900 when he vanishes from surviving records that are available.
We have a couple of pictures of Lee and would like to compare them to Levi if possable.

Thanks

I am so sorry. Do you have all the information that you need? I have quite a bit of info on the Pool family but not much on the Kelso family. I know that Mary Margaret's Father was Archibald but not who her mother was. If you need any further info, let me know, also, if you know who Mary Margaret's mother was (not Eliza Campbell) let me know. Kris

Re: Ben Kelso Gonzales and Caldwell Counties, Texas

I have some information taken from a page in a Dewitt county history book, published 1991 by DeWitt Co. Historical Society.
Under the Alfred Kelso Jr and family section "Robert E. Lee Kelso born on March 10,1869 in DeWitt Co.; John, born about 1872 in Travis Co, and Ninta born about 1875 in Travis Co..(They were the children of Alfred Kelso Jr and his 3rd wife Susan Ann Cunningham.)
Alfred Kelso Jr. was born about 1828 in Miss., son of Alfred Kelso Sr and Martha Martin of Fayetteville Tenn... moved family to Texas with his uncle James Kelso about 1850, first to Gonzales Co then to Dewitt Co. "Robert E.Lee Kelso was the last of this branch of the Kelsos to be born in DeWitt Co. He married Amanda Simpson, Daughter of Andrew J. Simpson in Gonzales Co on 12/16/1891. ...they had 8 children:William R., Ida,...Jarrett,...Bessie...BEN Kelso, born 4/19/02, married Mattie Blundell... etc
I will be glad to copy this page and send it to you if you need it.
The Kelso I am looking for is William H., born in Alabama about 1831, who was the son of Alfred Kelso Sr's brother James Kelso, . He disappeared from records about 1861 and his widow remarried. He was the father of my great grandmother Alice S. Kelso. Guess that makes us some sort of cousins! Hope this helps It's been a long time since your query. Mary Lou Jobes
