Origins of the Huntley, Huntly, Hundley, Hundly, Hunley, Hunly names

Derived from the places of those names in Gloucestershire and Monmouthshire England and in Berwickshire and Aberdeenshire, Scotland. Derived from the occupation of hunter.

Baderon and his brother Wythenoc came to England with William the Conqueror in AD 1066 from Brittany. Children: William Fitz Baderon, Baron of Monmouth in AD 1119 and Baderon of Monmouth.

Sir Walter de Huntley (parents Baderon of Monmouth and Roesia de Clare) was granted the lands of Huntley in the Barony of Monmouthsires in England and took his name from that place.

Sir Walter de Huntley married Petronilla de Musgros and is apparently the ancestor of the Huntleys of Treowen in Wales, the Huntleys of Gloucestershire and elsewhere in England.

There is a village called Huntley in Gloucestershire, England on the road from Gloucester to Ross on Wye. There is also a town and city named Huntly in Aberdeenshire, Scotland - here stand the ruins of Huntly Castle begun by Alexander Gordon first Earl of Huntly about AD 1452.
Huntly was originially called Strathbogie.

Boxwell Court, Tetbury, Gloucestershire, England with the Parish Church adjoining was acquired by Sir George Huntley ca. 1613 during the reign of King James I from the Heirs of Sir Walter Raleigh, grantee from the crown. (there is a picture of this)

The Huntly arms is not elaborate so it is believed to be quite ancient. (there is a picture of this)
