I see I did not send so here goes. Catherine's husband was Richard Ashe born 20/7/1795 in Ashgove, Clondrohid, Co. Cork to William (1757) and Anne Moore. He was a lieutenant in Wellington's army in Portugal and France from 1813 to 1814 being slightly wounded at Toulousse in 1814.
Richard Ashe, who you think was their son, was not the one who married Alice Agnes Orpen. That Richard was the son of another One!! There were 3 Richards at any one time from around 1780 to 1850 all related to an original Richard born around 1725 and all living around Macroom. They were Protestants and land owners -one had 2000 acres and lost it in 1850 being wiped out by the Famine.
Get in touch for more info if interested
Garry

This is all I know of Florida Kemps - I'd like to know more to try to tie them into the Smith Co., TN, Kemp lines It is interestingthat these Kemps and the Emma Kemp recently posted are both associated with Polk Co., FL. and Emma;s MIL was a Gore.

Marvin Walter Kemp (10 Dec. 1881 – 7 June 1958) [LDVT/PFL] [1910 USC] [1930 USC/PFL] [1945 FSPC/PFL] married Laura Virginia (Virgie) Gore (16 Sep. 1889 – 27 Apr. 1974) [LDVT/PFL] [LDVSS] [1930 USC/PFL] [1945 FSPC/PFL], daughter of Mounce Monroe and Delilah Hudson Gore. Marvin and Virgie were both born in Smith Co., TN. They moved to Lake Wales, Polk Co., FL, in 1927. Marvin was a farmer and a landscaper. Virgie was a first cousin to US Senator Albert Gore of TN. They resided in Lake Wales, Polk Co., FL and are interred in the cemetery there. Their children were:

* Virginia Gore Kemp (23 Apr. 1914 – 25 Feb. 2002) [LDVSS] [1930 USC/PFL], born in Smith Co., TN, resided in Washington, D.C., retired to and passed in Sarasota, FL, and likely never married.

* Marvin Gore Kemp (12 Jan. 1917 - ?) [1930 USC/PFL], born in Smith Co., TN, resided in Kilgore, TX and had two daughters.

Gary Pace
San Jose, CA
Resarching the descendants and antecedents of Henry B.
Hi Judie,

My great-grandmother was named Emma Kemp---she was born in Florida in 1897 and died in 1925 in Haines City, Polk County. Married Limuel Pinner.

I replied mostly because I don't really believe in coincidence and it was just odd that Emma's mother-in-law was named Elizabeth Gore. When I saw you had a Kemp and Gore listed and were looking in Florida, I had to write.

Unfortunately, Emma is the only Kemp I have in my 8700+ person file! Do you have many Kemps?

Steve Vaught

There are also WWI & WWII draft cards for him. The WWI shows that they would have been married around 1914-1915, based on the ages on the children in the 1920 census and what he attests to in the record. It also lists a different birth place from the 1920 census and the WWII draft card but has the same birth date of 13 Jan 1891. I'm pretty sure that this is your guy. Perhaps the TN location is across the state line from the NC location. Or the TN location is where his mother was from. You can contact me if you want jpeg copies of the actual records.

I did at quick look at the census records at ancestry.com & found Gracia listed as a nurse at the Michael Reese Hospital in Chicago. She was born in IA & both of her parents in IL. (Illinois > Cook > Chicago Ward 2 > District 179 > Page 26). The 1920 census (Illinois > DeKalb > DeKalb Ward 1 > District 20 > Page 1) shows she is married to Herbert L Carter with daughters Mary Ley & Lura L. They were living at 129 Lineolu Highway in De Kalb. The 1930 census (Illinois > Cook > Chicago (Districts 1751-1976) > District 1816 > Page 75) just shows her (shows that she is divorced)& her daughters at 4241 Sheridan Rd in Ward 48, Chicago. The 1940 census will be out next year. The 1920 census also show that Herbert was from NC worked as a barber in a barbershop & he owned the place they were living in. His father was from NC and his mother from TN.

Hi Julie,

Thanks, this is my line too. And your answer is exactly what I was looking for. I've seen about 5 Captians for every private on the internet. So, I never take anything at face value, no matter how well intended. I eventaully stumbled upon the records to support the claim.

1778 Mar 26, Court record, Yohogania Co., VA: Order that Edward Kemp, et al… "be recommended to his Excellency as proper persons to serve as Captains of militia.” (Crumrine, p139)

Crumrine, Boyd, "Virginia Court Records in Southwestern Pennsylvania; Records of the District of West Augusta and Ohio and Yohogania Counties, Virginia, 1775-1780." Balt,. MD: Gen. Pub. Co., 1974. (LCCN: 74007238) "Minute Book of Virginia Court, Yohogania County."

-- and I need to go back and get this book agian for other research. It's a valuble source I think many are not aware of, or overlooking.

Oliver Kemp is my ancestor. His wife was Wealthy Dunkan or Duncan. They were married in Dover, VT April 2, 1812. He was born in Massachusetts, in 1790 and, I believe, that his father's name was also Oliver. Wealthy was born in Vermont in 1793. I know from census records that in 1850 they were living in Greenfield, NY. In 1860, they were in Milton, NY. He died in 1865 and she moved in with one of her daughters, Hannah Anders, also in Milton. She died in 1875, in Ballston Spa, NY. I've only found about 7 children so far, including George Oliver Kemp, who is my great-great-great grandfather. I also have some Seaburys thrown in as well. Susan Augusta Seabury married George Oliver's son Samuel Orestes Kemp. They lived in Galway, NY.

Paula... Thanks for getting back to me so quick. I have the census records for Greenville, SC from 1790 to 1830. They show Moses (1774)and he had a son born in 1800/01 in SC. I found him in the census of 1800,1810,1820, and 1830. I also have several pages from different sources that show Moses and his brother Aaron moved to Gwennett Co, Ga in the early 1830's. My main stumbling block is Moses(1800/01). I need to find who he was married to. I have family records that Mahala(MNU) born abt 1805 with a son born 1836. His name is listed as Sanford Mose. The 1850 census shows him living with his mother Mahala and an older brother John. He had an older sister that records show married a Pickney Terry in 1846 in Gwinnett Co.
I badly need (if there is one) the proof of the connection between Moses (1800/01) and Mahala. If you have any info on any part of the family during the period 1800-1832 I would appreciate it.
I don't know if you have much info on Moses(1749) but I have that he had 6 kids.1)Sarah-1779 2)Moses-1774 3)Richard-1775 4) Aaron-1779 5)Hicksey-1784 6)Solomon-1787. I have land records showing that a Solomom Kemp bought land in Ga in the 1820 and an Aaron kemp was part of the 1827 land lottery. Be glad to share with you any other info I have...Paul

Hi, Paul,
The son of Moses 1749 who comes to me is Solomon Kemp, born 1787 in SC, died 1866 in Cobb County, GA. I have only the 1850 and 1790 US Federal Census, plus the geneology book put together by great aunt Carlie Kemp (lots of folks seem to have this) in 1932. I do show son Moses 1774 as a brother of my ancestor. Feel free to e-mail me at astutebuyer@comcast.net

Paula Kemp Watson

Hi Colin

Just coming back to you on the two marriages of your and Alan's James Kemp. IGI shows Charles Kemp christened 18 Jan 1846 and Marion Kemp born 16th Feb 1848 both in Larbert, chidren of James Kemp and Marion Pearson. This bears out your comments on the 1861 census, where James has remarried to Barbara.

All the best

David

Hi Colin

The recorded children of John Kemp (also Kempt) and Jonet (also Jenat) Chambers (also Chambors) are Marjorie (1663), Issobell (1665), William (1668), Margrat (1670), and John 1673).

The now six recorded children of Robert Kemp (also Kempt) and Lybra (also Lybray) Rae (also Rae, Rhae) are Jonet (1666) Agnes (1667), Janet (1670), John (29/04/1672), Elspeth (1675) and Jannet (1684).

Neither set of prospective parents it seems is particularly following the naming tradition.

All the best

David

Hi Colin

Alan will no doubt come back to you on that one. I think he picked up most info from the records office in Edinburgh. On the face of it there seem two prospective sets of Airth parents for John Kemp (b 1672/1673). The names of the recorded children of John Kemp and Janet Mcklay (Macklay) don't give any clues. They are Jannet (1708), John (1710), Margaret (1713) and Margaret (1715)

IGI shows two "Lybra Rae" candidates. One is born in Airth, c 1639, however this shows a spouse as Hobart Campbell. The other is born in Larbert, c 1842 and shows the spouse as Robert Kemp.

By the way the recorded children of Robert Kemp (also Kempt) and Lybra Rae (also Rae, Rhae) are Jonet (1666) Agnes (1667), Janet (1670), John (29/04/1672) and Jannet (1684). All born in Airth apart from Janet who was Larbert.

All the best

David

David have you tried Freecen.Uk? you can access the 1841 and 1851 Stirlingshire Censuses there, plus lots of county census records for the UK, the 1861, 1871, 1881 and 1891 censuses for Stirlingshire haven`t been placed online yet.
I looked for Charles Kemp and family on Freecen for the 1841 and 1851 census, on the 1841 census Charles now aged 65, Labourer, living with wife Jane aged 66, Labourer, and daughters Mary aged 20, Lab`r and Anne aged 19, Lab`r along with 2 grandchildren, John Kemp aged 4 and David Kemp aged 3 months. Mary`s children? I can`t find a son or grandson who`s children they might be? On the 1851 census for Airth Charles Kemp aged 74 Pauper (Late Lab`r), wife Jean aged 74 Pauper and daughter Ann, (no grandchildren!) aged 24 Muslin Sewer, all living in Airth village.
Charles Kemp died in Parish of Airth in 1860 aged 85 he was a widower, his parents were Charles Kemp and Agnes Perry. His daughter Agnes was the informant, she made her mark on the certificate, can`t make out her married name on the Death certificate!
Kind regards,

Colin.

David,
during my research and confirmed by my cousin`s research, between us we have come across two cases of the first spouse dying and the husband re-marrying.
The widower is left with a family and there wasn`t any dole money in those days, so he had to find another mother for his children which would enable him to continue to work to feed his children.

Colin.

Hi David,
there are two births given for John Kemp on the IGI,(1) John Kemp chr, 19 Aug 1672 Airth, parents Robert Kemp and Lybra Rea (Rae) and John Kemp chr, 14 Jun. 1673 Airth, parents John Kemp and Janet Chambors (Chambers). I can only find one Robert Kemp that is a fit for John Kemp`s father Robert Kemp birth 1631 Tranent father Androw Kemp. I can`t find Lybra Rea on the IGI? Both sets of parents are a good fit for John Kemp, I tend to favour John Kemp and Janet Chambers! is it 6 of one and half a dozen of the other? what do you think?
Kind regards,

Colin.

The names of the parents for James Bow Kemp on the certificate are James Kemp and Marion Pearson.
Hi Alan,
after further research on scotlandspeople, I have discovered that my James Kemp and your James Kemp are one and the same.
I downloaded a copy of his Death Cert, I also downloaded copies of the 1861 & 1871 censuses for James Kemp and family.
DEATH CERT:- James Kemp (Pit Labourer) died 24th Jan 1878 aged 68, Kinnaird (Parish of Larbert) Widower of Barbara Borrowman, Father Charles Kemp (Deceased) (Road? Head? Labourer) mother not listed.
Cause of Death Ulceration of Stomach, Informant Charles Kemp, Son, present.

:-1861 Census for James Kemp & Family.
James Kemp head, marr, 46, Colliery Lab, B. B. ||
My gt grandparents Joseph Balfour & (Marion Kemp born FEB 1848), listed above in the 1861 census, had a daur Marion in 1869, the Marion, James Kemp`s grand daughter on the 1871 census.
I reckon that James Kemp`s 1st wife Marion Pearson died giving birth to daughter Marion in FEB 1848, her death must have occured before 1855, as is not recorded on the scotlandspeople site. James then married Barbara Borrowman in July 1848 and as the 1861 census shows there were two children recorded who weren`t part of James and Barbara`s family, Charles aged 15, born 1846 and Marion 13 born 1848. Then there is Marion, James`s grand daughter on the 1871 census the child of Joseph Balfour S. and James Kemp and Marion Pearson`s daughter, Marion Kemp. So now we have proof of two marriages with brothers and sisters plus half brothers and half sisters.
Barbara Borrowman died aged 50 in 1868, highly likely that she too died in childbirth, daughter Barbara was 3 years old on 1871 census!
Kind regards,

Colin.

Hi David,
obviously we can`t be 100% sure, but by using the "Scottish Naming Patterns" formula i.e.
(1) the 1st son was normally named after the father`s father.
(2) the 2nd son was normally named after the mother`s father.
(3) the 3rd son was normally named after his father.
(4) the 1st daur was named after her mother`s mother.
(2) the 2nd daur was named after the father`s mother.
(3) the 3rd daur was named after her mother.
80% of the time the above formula was used. Which leads me to the conclusion that John Kemp`s B. 1673 parents were John Kemp & Jenat Chambers, not Robert Kemp & Lybra Rea as the names Robert and Lybra haven`t been used in the naming of John Kemp and Janet Macklay`s children!
Kind regards,

Colin

Hi Allan,
do you have the death certificate for James Kemp born 1813? if so was James Kemp married twice?
My James Kemp married Marion Pearson in 1832, there is a possibility that he was born between 1810 and 1815, James & Marion`s last child Marion was born in Feb 1848. Your James married Barbara Borrowman in July 1848. In the past I tried to find a Death Certificate for Marion Pearson on scotlands people, I looked in all the counties in Scotland for the death of a Marion Pearson or Marion Kemp between 1855 and 1900 assuming that she was 16-30 when she married in 1832, she would have to be at least 16 years old. The only Marion Pearson I found was married to a James Watson. This leads me to the conclusion that she died during the birth of her last child Marion born in 1848 or not long after it, the same year that James Kemp married Barbara Borrowman. James and Barbara`s 1st child was John born 1850. James was by this time 37 years old. I found a Barbara Borrowman on the Freecen site 1841 census in the county of Stirlingshire, she was aged 25 and living with her mother Betsy (Elizabeth) Borrowman.
There is a Barbara Borrowman birth 1815 Larbert parents, John Borrowman and Elizabeth (Betsy) Easton.
Barbara would be 32 when she married and 35 when her 1st son John was born in 1850.
I can`t find the family on the 1851 census record freecen record?
Do you think there is a possibility that your James married twice, he seemed to leave it late for his marriage to Barbara, unless he was married before and was a widower!
What do you think?

Colin.
LuAnn,
My wife is Arvilla Weyandt, daughter of Maxwell Weyandt & Vivian Kemp, and grandaughter of Nick Kemp. Are you just beginning exploring the Kemp tree? The reason I ask is because I've accumulated quite a bit of Kemp info and it would probably be best if we communicated directly. My email address is lbrivers@yahoo.com.
Do you live in the Brule area? We live in Apple Valley, MN.

Hi Alan

Hello - yes I am researching my Kemp relations in Larbert and Airth.

These include: James and Kitty Kemp (twins) b. 1894 Grangemouth and their parents John Kemp. 1852 Stirlingshire/ Elizabeth McLaren b. 1859. John's Dad was James Kemp b. 1827 Airth. Have quite a few others on the tree. Is this the same line as yours?
Best wishes
Catherine

I too think that Moses 1749 is in my line. What I have is that one of his sons was Moses 1774 and his son was Moses abt. 1800. Although there is no positive proof yet, all indications are that he married Mahala (MNU) and had a son Sanford Mose Kemp in 1836 in Gwinnett Co,Ga. I have family records showing Sanford and his mother Mahala and 1850 census. What I am lacking is the positive connection with Mose 1800.I also have some info on Richard and his wife. I would appreciate it if you can check your sources and let me know if you have a connection. I will be more than glad to share what I have with you...Thanks..Paul Kemp..Birmingham, Al
