Looking for Jeremiah Kennon, b in NC perhaps in 1711

Hello all,

I've done a LOT of searching, and I can trace the Kennons of VA to about the 1770's when Wm. Kennon's b. 1713 & Eliza Lewis Kennon's sons, Rchd.b.~1745, Chas. b.~1750, Wm. b. 1745/6, and John b 1752 went to North Carolina.

I can also trace my own Kennon line fairly reliably back to John Kennon b 1765 VA & Nancy Taylor b.1770, Marr 1793. then things get weird, and seem to lead back to a Jeremiah Kennon b 1711 in NC.

So, there's definitely a disconnect here, but I just haven't been able to bridge the gap.

Does anyone have information on either end of these lines that might prove/disprove a connections?

Thanks, Dannie

This is Katrina.

I did actually find out a little more information. My grandfather died earlier this year and I found myself in Lousiana meeting a lot of the Kennon family. Jim's daughter owns the Kennon Mortuary now and is a Minden official. His last surviving son died I believe in May. I know that is a family reunion scheduled for next year.

Re: Lucille Myrtle Kennon East

I'm not sure if this will help with your search for Lucy or not, but I
can give you some information I have found on Asariah Kennon/Cannon. I
have the following on Asariah.

Asariah Kennon (Cannon) born 1830 in NC
Son of Thomas Kennon and Susanna Hooper
Married 25 Aug. 1853 in Rockingham Co., NC to Martha Jane Lovelace (b.
NC 1834)
Daughter of John Lovelace and Cloe Ann Lovelace
Asariah died between the 1880 and 13 November 1886. That is the date of
the marriage of his and Martha's daughter Rosa Ellen Kennon to James
Marion Kennon and it states that the father of Rosa is deceased.

In the 1860 census for Rockingham Co., NC we find:

Dwelling No. 83, Family No. :
CANNON, Assa [Alsey], age 25, Male, White, Laborer in Factory, born
NC, cannot read or write
, Martha , age 22, Female, White, born in NC,
cannot read or write
, Martha A., age 5, Female, White, born in NC
, William, age 4, Male, White, born in NC
, Eliza, age 3, Female, White, born in NC

You have already listed the 1870 census in your post so I won't repeat
that here.

In the 1880 Rockingham Co, NC census we have:

Township: Oregonville, Dwelling No. 257, Family No. 261:
CANNON, Asariah, White, Male, age (prior to June 1st) 50, Married
, Martha, White, Female, 40, Wife, Married
, Caroline, White, Female, 15, Daughter, Single
, Britin (*writing very hard to read), White, Female,
14, Daughter, SIngle
, Robert, White, Male, 13, Son, Single
, Mollie, White, Female, 12, Daughter, Single
, Rosa, White, Female, 8, Daughter, Single
, Narmirr (*writing very hard to read), White, Female,
6, Daughter, Single
, John, White, Male, 4, Son, Single

Now, if you look at the ages given for Asariah in all three census,
there is obviously something wrong. Either they didn't know how old
they were or the census taker wrote it wrong. Also, note the age
differences on the children listed, particularly between 1870 and 1880.
I do think they all three Asariahs are the same man. I have never found
an older Asariah, but I have found one younger one. I think the Asariah
that married Sallie Pickeral is the same man that married Martha Lovelace.

Anyway, I don't know that this will help you with Lucy, but maybe it
will be of some help sometime.
Take care and good luck.
Blessings,
~*~
Laura

PS: Asariah is my ggg-grandfather through his daughter Rosa. :-)
Lucille Myrtle Kennon East

I am trying to find information on Lucille Myrtle Kennon.
(Lucille Kennon East, Born June 6, 1866--Died Nov. 21, 1931 Loving mother) Lucy is buried in the Ruffin, NC Community Cemetery.

Lucy married Robert Clifton East sometime after the 1880 cencus (Robert is buried next to Lucy-- RC East, Born March 21, 1853--Died Nov. 21, 1932 Peaceful father)

In 1900 and 1910, Lucy and Robert can be found living in Pellam, Caswell Co, NC. I am unable to find Robert and Lucy in the 1920 census, but by 1930, they are living in Ruffin, Rockingham Co, NC.

All census show Lucy as being born in NC, however I have been unable to find her family.

In the 1870 Census, I can find a Lucinda Cannon who is living with her parents but I am not sure if this is the right Lucy.

Robert was born in Halifax Co, VA in 1853, by 1880, he is 25 and living with his mother and syblings in Rockingham Co, NC.
----------------------------------------------
(I received the following help from someone is Caswell Co NC.)

I see that your Robert East is living in Rockingham Co., NC, Oregonville, in the June 1880 census, along with his mother and siblings. Also in that census is Lucey Kennon, age 19, keeping house in the G.A. Miller household.

Dwelling 3, 1880 census, Rockingham Co., NC, p. 1, Oregonville, June 1, 1880:
G. A. Miller, 67, physician
Mattie S. Miller, 41, wife
Lena Miller, 11, daughter
Insogene G. Miller, 4, daughter.
A. Perkins Miller, male, 32, son, merchant
Mollie Miller, wife (of A. Perkins), 26
Lucy KENNON, 19, keeping house, b. NC (is this YOUR LUCY?)

So Lucy and your Robert East were in the same county and town in 1880.

I also see a birth record in Catawba County, NC, for Albert Holland East, born June 12, 1900, to Robert Clifton East and Lucille Myrtle Cannon.

So, checking the CANNON spelling, I find who I think might be your "Lucy Kennon."

1870 US Census, Rockingham Co., NC, Oregonville:
Euriah (?) Cannon, 45, works tobacco factory, b. NC
Martha Cannon, 34, keeping house, b. NC
Martha A. Cannon, 15, at home, b. NC
William Cannon, 13, works tobacco factory, b. NC
Sallie Cannon, 12, works tobacco factory, b. NC
Lucinda (is this LUCY?) Cannon, 11, works tobacco fac., b. NC
Caroline Cannon, 10, at home, b. NC
Robert Cannon, 9, b. NC
Mollie Cannon, 8, b. NC

(I received the following help from someone is Caswell Co NC.)
I think his name was actually Azariah Cannon(nicknamed Assey in the 1860 census). By the 1880 census for Rockingham Co., NC, Oregonville, p. 52, Asariah and Martha Cannon only have Caroline, Bertie, Robert, Mollie, Rosa, Nannie and John at home. Lucey Cannon is working out and keeping house for the Miller family in Rockingham, Oregonville. I wonder if one of Lucey's sisters married a Miller man?

If Lucey was age 19 in the June 1880 census, and her first child was born August 1881 (John R. East), then I'd guess she and Robert East probably married about 1881 in Rockingham County, NC.

There is an Azeriah Cannon married Sallie Peckeral on Dec 31, 1847, in Rockingham Co., NC, so this might be the father of Azariah Cannon who married Martha and had a daughter Lucinda (Lucy) Cannon. It will take more research.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Anyway, I am trying to see if there is anyone out there who has any information that can help in my research, I would love to hear from you.

Thanks

Re: Kennon Family and all Their Ties

I am a black Kennon and am in search of how my family name came to us. I have hit a brick wall since my mom & her only brother are deceased as well as any other family that could help. I do know we have Native American blood but where from, I'm not sure. Maybe we could help each other.

Cecily,

You may already be aware of this posting to the board a few years ago:

"Charles Lewis KENNON b. 1755 m. Mary Howell LEWIS 1770 in Virginia. Their children Martha, Elmira, Jane H., Elizabeth Warner, Mildred Lewis, Lewis, Charles H, Nancy W, Mary. This Mary Howell LEWIS died before 1812 when her father died. I have a copy of his Will (Virginia 1812)in which he gives to the family of his daughter Mary (decsd).
Where is Mary buried and when did she die?
There is a book, which I have, "The Lewises of Warner Hall" - this states that Charles KENNON was married and had all the above and the following children to Mary Howell LEWIS.
This is not so as I also have a copy of the Will and Settlement of Mary ...., the second wife to Charles KENNON. She died in 1848 (Wake Co, NC) and mentions her children - Patsey, Lucy, Richard, Sally, Howell, Rebekah, James, Elisa, Erasmus, Sarah.
Charles KENNON's will also states "I leave to my wife Mary and that my daughters who are her daughters..." mentioning the immediate above daughters.
I cannot find the death of Mary Howell LEWIS pre 1812 (probably c. 1795)
- the marriage to a second Mary unknown. This Mary and Charles did move to Wake Co, NC but it is a burned county.
Help me please: email - Waustclaire@aol.com
(Claire Cook)"

Hope this is of some use to you...

Jim Slone

I was delighted to see that your 4th generation John Kennon, b. 1752, was born in Louisa, VA. I have been searching for 30 years for a tie to my Kennon line. My brickwall is George Littleton Kennon, born 1802 in Louisa, and your John may provide a clue.

I also notice, however, that "Louisa, VA" is followed by "Granville, Orange, Wake," and I assume you have indications that those are possible alternate birthplaces. Have I interpreted correctly?

This is the first of the Richard Kennon line I have seen associated with Louisa. Can you tell me what information led you to this birthplace for him? I would dearly love to tie my Louisa Kennons into Richard Kennon's line!

Thanks so much for your posting.

Jim Slone

Teresa,
Thanks for your information. My g'mother Kennon believed the family came from Ireland, but so far haven't found any confirmatory records. However, a 3rd cousin has an interesting portrait of Lucy Knight [nee Kennon] inscribed 'The Grandaughter of Sir Thomas Kennon Bart., of Kilkenny Castle... Ireland'. Another cousin knows of a Bible inscription of Sir Sampson Beverly
Kennon, 1830, Thomas's brother. Thomas [Vere] Kennon was my g.g.g'father, born 1811/17 & died 1867+. His father was James Vere K., b. 1776 [in Ireland?], died 1841 in Aston, Birmingham [England].
Am having problems using FamilyHistory.com - would be easier to send any further info. direct to your e-mail address if you're
happy to supply it. Am hoping to get to Ireland again to do more research in Dublin record office.
More help needed, re: Charles Kennon and wife (wives)

Help dig me out of a genealogical quagmire!

Charles Lewis Kennon, born 1755 in Chesterfield Co., died 21 May 1820 in Wake Co., NC, married on 19 April 1770 to first cousin Mary Howell Lewis (born 1759, d. 14 March 1848).

He had at least sixteen children, and depending on the account, it was with more than one wife--some say that following Mary Lewis' wife, he married another Mary (surname unknown).

Can anyone help clarify which children belonged to which wife--if indeed there were two wives? Does anyone know who wife number two was? I seem to have three more names than the standard 16--
•	Martha
•	Elmira
•	Jane Howell

I descend from Lewis Kennon, Charles' son.
