I'm the one who obtained the manuscript from the author's heirs, edited it, and distributed it to a few Kenyon researchers in June of 1991. It is a Microsoft Word document of about 72 pages. E-mail me at RichardRKenyon@msn.com and I can e-mail you a copy as a set of attached .doc files. In general, I found the manuscript disappointing in quantity and quality of information.
She was very proud of that and it always drew a smile when they called her that.

Ina passed away Wednesday, October 8, 2009 at the Palo Alto County Hospital at the age of 96. She was preceded in death by her parents; an infant son, Leo; her husband, Leonard; two sisters, Erma Kenyon and Eileen Molitor; two brothers, Ed and Lyle Kenyon; as well as other family members.

She is survived by her children, Lois Dotson and her husband, Dennis of Milford, IA, Donna Weishaar of West Des Moines, IA, Darrel Weishaar of Aysrhire, IA and Gary Weishaar and his wife, Kay of Perry, IA; her grandchildren and great grandchildren, Brad and Heather Dotson and their children, Eli, Olivia and Isaac; Mitch and Andrea Dotson and their children, Jordan, Michael, Jenna and Wyatt; Jill Dotson; Amanda Dotson; Jessie and Kelly VanDeWalle; Layton Weishaar; Alyse Weishaar; and Ethan Weishaar; a brother, Kenneth Kenyon; as well as many other relatives and friends.

SERVICE
Sacred Heart Catholic Church
Ayrshire, Iowa
Saturday, October 10, 2009, 10:30 A.M.

INTERMENT
Calvary Cemetery
Ayrshire, Iowa
John S and Harriet L Kenyon, NYC

Looking for information regarding John S and Harriet L. They are buried in Trinity Cemetery in NYC.
from the vault;
Harriet L. Kenyon DOD 2-10-1872
John S. Kenyon DOD 1-23-1882
Don't have birth dates but would guess 1805-1815 based on census records.

Think there is a link between Harriet and Charles Willson, as he is buried in the vault with them and his wife. The surving Kenyon children authorized his burial there.
The Willson family was in NYC till 1840's when they moved to Rochester.

Any help would be appreciated.

Bill

Mrs. Hannah Lawson Kenyon, b. abt 1841

Searching for information on Mrs. Hannah Lawson Kenyon (b. abt 1841, d. aft. 1910) of Groton and Montville, CT. Any help is appreciated. Hannah was the daughter of Martin Lawson and Eleanor Conely Mayo Collyer of NYC and Groton and was identified in various estate records as Hannah Kenyon. I have census records for her in Groton in 1850 & 1860 and in Montville in 1910, but little more - I have nothing on her husband or children. The 1910 census record lists her as widowed, mother of 8 children, 3 of whom were still living. Again, any help is appreciated. Thanks, Charlie Black

Re: Lost Freeman Kenyon in 1840 Erie Co., NY

This is seven years since you posted your question, but I do believe I have found some information on your lost Freeman Kenyon of Erie County, New York.

The 1820 Census shows a listing for Fruman (sic)P. Kinyon of Holland, Niagara, New York, age range 45 and up. Niagara became Erie County not long after this census was taken. Also listed is Arnold Kinyon of Holland, Niagara, whom you also inquired about. He is listed in the age range of 26-44. In addition, there is also a Samuel Kinyon on the line right above Fruman (Freeman), listed in the age range of 45 and up.

Perhaps you can help me. I am also interested in these Kinyons, as I am trying to track down information about my gg grandfather, Lyman Kenyon /Kinyon/ Kinion.

Lyman alternates, on his census records, the reporting of the birthplace of his father. Sometimes he lists it as New York and other times as Wales. It has been suggested that perhaps his father was born in Wales, New York. Since there is nothing to support that he was born in Wales of the United Kingdom, then my attention has turned to these little known Kinyons / Kenyons of Holland and Wales, Erie County (formerly Niagara County), New York.

I'm looking for someone who has access to a copy of "The Author's Supplement to American Kenyons" by H.N. Kenyon who can scan or copy about 3-5 pages. I've seen very few references to this book, but one reference says that it contains the information that I'm looking for.

The pages that I believe contain the information I need are 17, 18 and 34 concerning William Kenyon (1758-1837). These pages should contain information on the family of William Kenyon son of David Kenyon and Mary Potter, including William's sons Avery and Allen. There may be one additional page covering William's death.

I have a Peter Maclure (1815-1892) in my tree who described himself as a retired draper in the 1881 census (for Ealing, Middlesex). Peter was born in Kirkcowan, Wigtownshire and his father Samuel McClure (1774-1828) was a farmer in Derry (also in Kirkcowan). I have not come across a Robert Maclure until now, but there may be a connection.

Martin.

Dave,

The article I copied to this board started:

"Many Kenyons in North America have used Howard N. Kenyon's book "American Kenyons".

In the following article, Richard Kenyon gives a few pointers on the subject."

So Richard holds the information. On my website I have a link to Richard Kenyon which may still be valid but I have not tried it recently.

If you look at the IGI, you will see that during the 1640's there were five John KENYON's [with variant spellings] christened in Lancashire. These are marked as actual extractions from original sources, so should be fairly accurate.

Four of these were marked as being at the Manchester Cathedral, which was actually the Manchester Collegiate Church until 1847. The fifth was at Bolton le Moors, St.Peters.

The IGI shows 113 John KENYON's as born or christened in England during the 1600's. How this relates to the actual numbers born is anyone's guess, so it is a case of take your choice!

Best regards

Rod

Re: Kenyons of Oldham circa 1633 to 1684

Hello David,

Then you will have read this?

Rhode Island Roots

Rhode Island Kenyons

Many Kenyons in North America have used Howard N. Kenyon's book "American Kenyons".

In the following article, Richard Kenyon gives a few pointers on the subject.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Kenyon English Roots: What Do We Really Know for Sure?

Most, if not all, of us who trace our Kenyon ancestry back to John or James Kenyon in colonial Rhode Island have believed that John and James were born to James Kenyon and Ester Smith in the vicinity of Oldham in the outskirts of Manchester, England. This is stated as fact by Howard N. Kenyon in his American Kenyons. Perhaps this has never been questioned in any printed account, (although some have questioned the apparent marriage of Anna/Hannah Mumford to John Kenyon in England).

A record of the marriage of James Kenyon and Ester Smith is quoted on pp. 35-6 of American Kenyons. Baptismal records for "Oldham Parish Church" are quoted on p. 37, op. cit., for John and James, son of a James Kenion of Glodwick, followed by the baptism of Mary, daughter of a James Kenion (in this case the domicile is not specified). The mother's name is not given, as was customary for such records. No other information is known to exist that would help in proving the assumed connections between these people: no will, no land records nothing.

The Mormons have a special British Isles I.G.I., separate from the one for the US and Canada. I collected together all the Kenyon entries (including variant spellings) dated before the year 1700 found on the Mormon CD's (Compact Disks). These entries record baptisms and marriages (but no deaths).

The pre-1700 entries are the pertinent ones for the Rhode Island Kenyons (since John and James are first noticed in the 1687 RI tax records).

The total number of pre-1700 British Isles IGI entries for Kenyons is astounding: something over 1500 entries! A few interesting observations can be made from an analysis of the data. It seems most entries give localities in Lancashire, clustered around Manchester (Oldham is just 7 miles away). However, there are Kenyon entries for other areas as well. These include Liverpool (also in Lancashire), but other "counties" as well, such as Cheshire, Yorkshire, and Lincoln, plus a few around London.

This IGI data was copied from the Mormon CDs to floppy disks which were then used then to build a database using the Microsoft Access software. This facilitated the analysis. One 4-page report summarizes the data by county and "place", showing the total number of IGI entries for each "place" and the earliest and latest of these (pre-1700) entries. A second report of 26 pages lists every item, also arranged by county and "place". (A couple early-1700 entries were accidentally included and a couple pre-1700 entries were accidentally omitted perhaps a half dozen in each). Many duplicates will be noticed, some entries being the Latin equivalents of the anglicized names.

It was much more difficult for Howard N. Kenyon to obtain such data in the 1920's and 30's. As he reports in his book, he hired the clerk at the Oldham Parish Church to search the old, original records. It is unknown by me what led him to Oldham. After the Oldham records were searched, he paid to have the registers some nearby parishes searched too. He lists them on pp. 41-2 of his book.

The basic question is: what evidence is there about the ancestry of the two earliest known Rhode Island Kenyons, John and James? We don't even know when or how they got to Rhode Island. Apparently there is no evidence that conclusively proves their ancestry. What lead Howard N. Kenyon and earlier writers to the conclusions that they stated? Did they just take it as fact, based upon blind belief, (as I did previously)? Some earlier accounts gave the father of John and James as John (not James), or claimed a connection to Roger Kenyon and the Kenyon's of Peel Hall (a couple miles south of Manchester).

I wonder why HNK used an "I" to identify who he believed to be the father of John and James who he gave IDs of "1" and "2", respectively. This is an inconsistency in his system. It is my hunch that he was in doubt about the English connections and had not allowed for including the English parents when he started his ID system. I also assume he arrived at his conclusions about the English parents simply by "a process of exhaustion" and running out time to meet the printer's schedule.

Unless I see something more concrete, I will have to conclude that the stated parents of John and James were purely a guess, based upon coincidences found among insufficient data! Looking at just the IGI data, there are dozens or even hundreds of potential English connections! What evidence is there even that John and James were brothers?

This may all sound like heresy, but I think it's important to realize how much we have taken on faith. It is only natural to want to extend our families back as early as possible, but it must not be done without some good evidence. I hope that with today's extensive genealogical resources it will be possible to clear up some of the mysteries of our English origins. (Or can we even be certain of that the ancestors of John and James were born in England)?

I raise these questions, hoping that there are answers. I hate uncertainty! Any comments, and particularly any new information, would be welcomed.

On a related matter, the British Isles IGI was also searched for Mumfords. There has been some controversy concerning the Anna Mumford, said to be the wife of the original John Kenyon of Rhode Island because Mumford genealogies do not mention her. Among the Mumford data were the christenings of two Hannah Mumfords:

Hannah Mumford, chr. 7 Feb 1668, St. Mary, Whitechapel, Stepney, London
Father: Thomas Mumford, Mother: Susanah.

Hannah Mumford, chr. Jan 1693, St. Andrews, Holborn, London
Father: Thomas Mumford, Mother: Alice.

Whether this information has any relevance to Kenyon genealogy is unknown at this time.

See "Stephen Mumford" and "The Seventh Day Baptists"
(The IGI data for the British Isles was the original set on CDs, issued about 1991 and still current in Oct. 1993).

The proper answer to the question "What do we really know for sure (about the Rhode Island Kenyon's supposed English roots)?", must be (unfortunately) a resounding: "Absolutely nothing !".

Note from Rod Clayburn

The Oldham Registers 1558-1661 were published privately by G Shaw (Ed) in 1889, did the local researcher just go through this publication and select the Kenyon entries or look at the original Parish Records which are still held by the church?

The IGI information was probably taken from the above publication.

The point is that not everything may be found, maybe we are awaiting a "Tutankhamen Experience" when the answer will emerge from the depths of Lancashire Record Office!

Rod

I have a duplicate Kenyon book which I would like to sell (Hope this is acceptable to Rootsweb--I read policy but found nothing related)

The book is "Kenyon Family History, thru Azariah 1769-1848" compiled by John R. Kenyon. It was self-published in 1999. I do not know whether this book is still available or not. I purchased this second copy from the compiler. It is 311 pages, including index. It begins with James Kenyon, b. 1633 in England and ends with the 14th generation. The price I paid was $40 plus $5.00 shipping and I would be willing to sell it for $30 including media shipping. The book is in near mint condition

Unfortunately the book has included no sources, but has abundant info on various segments of the family.

Contact me at usergolds@aol.com if you are interested

He is her fraternal twin, and she is increasingly distressed over the loss of her other half, so to speak. Father Robert J. Kenyon and Barbara. Births were in Connecticut, September 14th, 1964.

His last known location was El Cajon, California.

If you know anyone who may fit this description, please let me know.

I also am very interested in the history of my line of Kenyons, as I am too shy to ask my grandfather for this information, but I believe he has relatives in New York state.

Thank you,
Sarah Rachel Kenyon

Well, Robert was in the Navy (career) and was posted at New London, CT in 1964 (the year of the twins' birth), and Barbara Kosey is from Wisconsin originally. They had 4 children, and at some point moved to California, where eventually they divorced. Robert was born in about 1938, and Barbara in 1943. He is remarried. I have heard Robert mention at least one sister.

I now understand that about 1985 was one of the last times twin Mary ever saw her brother Michael.

Looking for Harry Earl Kenyon Sr. Ancestors

My grandfather was Harry Earl Kenyon. He was born in 1890 in Pueblo Colorado. His mothers name was Florence, however she went by Virginia and "Jennie". Virginia was her middle name. She also used the name Read (Rhead, Reade, Reed). (The family bible shows his mother as both Florence Virginia Read and "Jennie" Read, but my grandmother, Winnie, mis-spelled names and often recorded the wrong dates.) I was told when I was a child Jennie had been a travelling stage actress and met Harrys dad in Texas or somehwere in the south. I found a 1910 census showing my Grandfather,Harry, and his mother together in Portland Oregon, and she listed herself as a widow. My grandfather was 20. He married my grandmother Winnie V Rambo in 1912 and they lived the rest of their lives in Portland Oregon. I know that Harry moved around a lot as a child and I can't find any records of his Father. I am not sure if Kenyon was his mothers maiden name or her married name. No birth certificate is available for Harry in Colorado, I have already checked. Harry on 1920 census, listed his father as born in England, but his mother stated on the 1910 census that he was born in New York. She was born in about 1863 in Pensyvania (per census reports), so I think his dad was lkely about the same age. Does this sound familiar to anyone?

I cannot help you with your immediate family, but I can help you with the broader history of the Kenyon family.

Most Kenyons in the U.S. decend from two brothers who are known to have been in Rhode Island by 1687. There is considerable debate about where they came from. There were also a variety Kenyons from New York, especially around Rensler and Hague, New York.

See, http://members.cox.net/dtrose/kenyon_family.htm#3072
This site makes claims about the Kenyons in England, but it is not necessarily accurate. We are researching that now. The American Kenyons are pretty accurate.

For the origins of the family see, http://www.british-history.ac.uk/report.aspx?compid=41399

I would not shy away from asking your grandfather. Knowing the members of the family he knows is very important. His parents and grandparents will show up in census records (census records are not public until they are 75 years old). Once you are in the census records it is relatively easy to track your family at least back to the Civil War. Not to mention the fact, that when your grand father is gone, his memories go with him. I knew my great grandmother who was born in 1880. I would not trader her stories for anything. She once told me about the time she saw her first car - she was 18 years old - that was in 1898. Priceless.

Good luck to you.

Dave Kenyon
St. Louis Missouri

I have been taking an attorney's approach to this search. This is to say that I am looking for proof, not speculation, and sticking to the evidence that is most likely and most logical.

In 1717, John Kenyon stated his age in a deposition as 70 years old "or thereabouts". This is perhaps one of the most reliable biographical statements he makes and should be given more weight than third-hand information.

This would put his birth date at 1647, plus or minus a couple of years. My search of the IGI records only produces two candidates in England to be this John Kenyon.

The first is christened February 7, 1646 or 1647 (IGI has it listed twice with both years indicated) at St. Peter, Bolton Le Moors in Lancashire. The second, was christened May 21, 1648 at Manchester Collegiate Church, commonly referred to as Manchester Cathedral.

Of the two, the Manchester record has the highest degree of probablity. Christenings traditionally were held when a child was a year old. This makes the Manchester birth date an exact match.

The Bolton Le Moors Kenyon is a potential candidate, however, given that the birth year is likely to be 1645 or 1646 which is within the "give and take" range. Bolton is only about 15 miles from Manchester center. All of the Kenyons in this area are related, the degree to which would be unknown, but they are not likely to be too far removed from each other.

It is interesting to note that the Royalists in the Civil War attacked Bolton three times and massacred Puritans there. That would certainly make migration popular with many regional Puritans.

What is confusing is that the Kenyon family in Rhode Island were known to be members of many sects outside of the Church of England and yet John gave money to help build an Episcopal Church in Westerly. This would leave one to believe that his religious affiliations were more mainstream than the Puritans of the area.

My research from here on out is going to focus on these two Johns. I believe that based on the evidence, the others are disqualified from likelihood by the known dates.

Dave Keyon

My 4th great grandfather was Jeduthan Kenyon of Mount Carroll, Illinois. He was a private in the 34th Illinois Infantry. He died of typhoid fever contracted at the siege of Vicksburg. He was shipped up the river to Savanah, Illinois (I believe that was the town) whereupon he died in 1863.

Jeduthan had also served in the army in the Mexican War during the 1840s.

His brother was Captain Phineas Kenyon, I believe of the 5th Illinois. He entered service as a seargant and was field promoted several times until he reached the rank of captain. He was captured at the Battle of Alatoona Pass, probably having been assigned to hold the blockhouse there. The Union Army was protecting Sherman's rear as he advanced on Atlanta. Sherman was supposed to send reinforcements, but did not. Alatoona pass was considered the bloodiest battle of the war in that more men died in a shorter time period than at Gettysburg.

Captain Kenyon was sent to Andersonville prison where he was held until it was liberated after the fall of Atlanta. He eventually moved to Oklahoma where he died, I believe in 1929. Phineas is fairly well documented.

There were other Kenyons in the Revolution. I believe David Kenyon of Rhode Island was one.

Mr. Clayburn:

My name is David Kenyon, I am descended of a John Kenyon who arrived in Rhode Island possibly as early as 1683, but more likely 1684. He is reputed to have married the daughter of a Thomas Mumford, though the records are not complete regarding this. I am an attorney and amateur genealogist. I have been working on this and other mysteries for a couple of years now. By habit, I verify family facts with actual records and do not rely on computer databases, whenever possible, least of all Ancestry.com. I have quite a broad base of information regarding this particular genealogical issue from the American side and have been scouring local archives in the U.K. to try substantiate or disprove the several theories that are out there.

May I inquire about you? A message board may not be the best place to discuss these things. My email address is dkenyon@habitata.com.

David Kenyon
St. Louis, Missouri USA

Is the microsoft access database available for use? What would be important to look at is all John Kenyons within the date range for the known John Kenyon in Rhode Island. We know he claimed to be around 70 years old in 1717. This would set his birthdate near 1647. It would be helpful to look for a John Kenyon in England born in 1647 +- 5 years to see what comes up. While there are 1500 Kenyons in the database, less are named John and few would hit this date parameter. This should zero in on the matter rather quickly.

Is it possible to get the database?

Dave Kenyon

Rod:

Thank you for posting the article. I had not read it before, for whatever reason, but I have come to the exact same conclusion.

The IGI records are a curious thing and not always reliable. LDS has in interest because of why the compile genealogical records to "over-include" and have a when-in-doubt-add policy. They also do not track their sources which is unfortunate.

You will be interested to note that in my dealings with the various local archives, I received this email from Oldham:

Dear David Kenyon

In reply to your e-mail of 16 September, I have checked the parish registers of St Mary’s Church, Oldham for any references to the various Mumfords and Ann Remmington who you cited.

The records for these early dates are transcribed and indexed (by the Lancashire Parish Register Society Vol 157 ISBN 1 85445 151 0) and I could only find one mention of a Tho. Moumford of Ouldham. He was buried on 23 December 1633. There is no further information given. There are no Remmingtons (or similar names) listed.

I am sorry that we have not been able to be of much assistance to you on this occasion.

Yours sincerely

Christine Drummond - Senior Local Studies Assistant
Oldham Local Studies and Archives
84 Union Street
Oldham
OL1 1DN
Tel: 0161 770 4654
www.oldham.gov.uk/local_studies
_________

I was encouraged to find reference to a Thomas Moumford (common spelling of the name at the time) in Oldham. The man who is reputed by American genealogists to be John Kenyon's father-in-law was said to have been born around 1625 in the U.K. The question is now, is this his father buried at Oldham?

It certainly adds to the circumstantial evidence, but does not make the case.

I have always felt that Stephen Mumford needed to be looked at in greater detail and that whether there is a connection between him and Thomas determined. He had a daughter named Anna and arrived in Rhode Island at about the right time. It also appears that a fair number of Kenyons were Sabbatarians although Johns donation to build an Episcopal church in Westerly Rhode Island in the early 1700s tends to rule that faith out as to him anyway.

I have been working on a survey of Mumfords of the time and am going to start looking into the Shermans (Thomas's wife) to see if a geographical pattern can be determined. The problem is that by the mid-1600s England is a pretty mobile society, at least in the domestic sense. At least there were good records kept.

Thanks for your post.

Dave Kenyon

I am researching a branch of the Kenyon family that lived in Oldham between 1633 to 1684. They are believed to be the first Kenyons to go to America in the 1680s. The connection is not completely proven. We are looking for the birth place of James Kenyon born in 1633 who married Ester Smith and had two sons John and James. We know he was NOT from Oldham or Droylsden because direct search of birth records in both places do not note him. There are many erroneous Ancestry.com listing for this man. We believe that he may have been born in Winwick Parish near Warrington. LDS records have a James there of approximate date. Any clue you could bring to ligh would be appreciated. Thank you.
