Looking for origins of a great grandfather, Jeremiah Keohane, from city of Cork in County Cork, born 26 May 1858. Immigrated to Boston, MA, 1875. His parents were John and Catherine Keohane of County Cork. His father was a sea captain per family lore. Jeremiah's siblings were Daniel, Hannah (1860), and Catherine (1871). I would like more info on Jeremiah's parents. All I have is their names.

This may be no connection at all, but my husband's great grandfather was Jeremiah F. Keohane. Jeremiah's mother was Catherine, wife of John Keohane of County Cork. John and Catherine had a daughter named Catherine who was born about 1871 in Ireland. She married a Dennis Quinn. Jeremiah F. Keohane was born May 26, 1858, in City of Cork. He moved to USA in 1875 and died in Massachusetts 1943. Jeremiah had a brother Daniel and a sister, Hanna, as well as sister Catherine. All of these names are common in county cork, so there might not be a close relation.

We would love to hear more from you about any information you have. I will provide my personal e-mail addresses, etc... Thanks For Your Lead! Linda of the Michigan Keohanes

Keohane (b. 2 Jan 1875-?after 1930)
his Father: Patrick Keohane (26 Nov 1848-3 Aug 1909)
his Mother: Catherine Driscoll (1847-?)
Wife: Ellen McGarry (1882-?)

children:
Catherine (1908-1910)
Lawrence (1909-1910)
Joseph L (1911-?)
John (1915-?)

This family lived at 1918 Carlton St. in 1890, 1900, and 1902 and then lived at 1940 Harlan St. in 1909, 1910, 1917, 1920

In 1895, my g-grandfather, Jeremiah Murphy on his immigration record lists that he is going to stay with "Uncle Pat Keohane, 1918 Carlton St." On his marriage record in 1900, he still lists 1918 Carlton as his address.

The names and dates above were found through census records (1900, 1910, 1920, 1930), as well as death certificates for Patrick Keohane, Catherine & Lawrence. (both children died of Diptheria)

Hope this helps anyone who is connected to this family.

Hello,
I've recently begun an attempt to trace back each of the Keohane families that settled in the Philadelphia area.
My g-g-grandmother was Catherine (Keohane) Murphy [~1835-1927]. She was born and stayed in Co. Cork (Ballintemple?, Gurranes, Timoleague.

Several of her Murphy sons traveled to the Philadelphia area and stayed in contact with a number of their Keohane cousins. But those exact records of relation were lost, and now I'm working on piecing it together from the bottom up.

So far, the Keohane family heads that I have identified (born in Ireland, and moved to Philadelphia) are:

Jeremiah Keohane (b.~1825) m. Ann O'Hea
John Keohane (1832-1916) m. Johanna Driscoll
Patrick Keohane (b. 1848-1909) m. Catherine Driscoll
Lawrence Keohane (b.~1850-52) m. unknown (died before 1910)
Sylvester Keohane (b.~1855) m. Hanora C ______

So far I have strong evidence that members of families 3, 4 & 5 are somehow related to my Keohane lines. Still seeking to define exactly how each line is connected.

Anyone willing to share your information about any of these Philadelphia Keohanes, or if you know of other Keohane families who lived in this area at any point, please let me know. You can email me through ancestry, or directly at MEIERCAMPBELL12@gmail.com. For anyone interested in contributing, I'd be more than happy to share the end results of our research.
Thanks so much!

Keohane and Murphy from County Cork, Timoleague

Hello,
In researching our family history, I now know that my g-grandfather was Jeremiah Murphy (b. 1870 in TIMOLEAGUE, Cork, Ireland). Jeremiah moved to Philadelphia in 1894 and was married to Catherine Carroll (or McCarroll) -- not sure whether they married here or there.

Jeremiah's mother is listed in family records as Catherine Keohane. I don't know much about this family yet, but wanted to ask if anyone has made any Keohane connections to Timoleague, Cork... or to Philadelphia.

One other record I do have

Jeremiah's son (Daniel A Murphy-1908)'s Certificate of Babtism at Our Mother of Consolation Church in Chestnut Hill. His parents were Jerimiah Murphy and Catherine Carroll. Dad was born on July 21st 1908 and baptized on August 2, 1908 by F. M. Shearan, O.S.A. His sponsors were Denis Keohane and Josephine Cahill I (I bet that is great Aunt Jo).
My guess is that Denis Keohane would be a cousin or uncle to Jeremiah that came over as well.

I look forward to hopefully finding someone with a connection to this family.
thanks,
Chris

My Dad was JAMES KEOHANE - 10 October 1925 to August 1993 born at Sunny Bank, Tynant, Pontypridd, Glamorgan, South Wales. Dad was youngest son of :
DANIEL KEOHANE Apx 1876 – (?) & AGNES FLORENCE BELLIS. Apx 1882-1972
Married at Cardiff Registry Office 17th March 1904, from (2&7) Hawthorn Road Llandaf Cardiff.
Daniel's father, also, Daniel (misspelled) KEONE hailed from Cork Ireland but came to Wales as a child about 1885/90.
Agnes Florence’s father James BELLIS was from North Wales Bagillt.
Dad's Brothers & Sisters: MAY - possibly Amelia,(1906?) LILIAN (1908?), ARTHUR JOHN -1909 - Bridgend - Died 1970ish. KATHLEEN 1911 . ALICE E (Eileen?) 1912. Mothers Maiden name recorded this date forward: IRENE W. Born 1916 Pontypridd, BRIDGET G.1919, IVY 1921, FREDERICK J 1924 Jeramiah - possibly? Dad would be 82+.
Hopefully someone out there enjoyed listening to family stories and can identify with my family tree.
I’ve found these useful: http://www.keohane.net/ http://www.keohane.org/
Hi Jack,
Thanks for your reply, it helped.

When you receive George M Cohan inquiries, I would appreciate it if you would refer them to me, at the above email address. Eventually, I hope to start a "George M. Cohan's Cousins" site somewhere, to help people sort out family stories about being related to him. A few do know how he is related to them, but all could make even more progress by comparing information.

Thanks again,
Barb Glassel
Madison, WI

In what time period? Born Keohane or married to a Keohane? Do you have other details? I know of several Keohanes from the Banry area up to the Kerry border. I refer to my family as part of the "Bantry" Keohanes even though they are from Caheragh to differentiate them from Nora Keohane Hickey's "Barryroe" Keohanes. By my definition the Bantry Keohanes are from west West Cork and the others from West Cork.

Re: Patrick & Julia O'Brien Keohane (Patrick - Co. Cork 1849 settled in Fayetteville, NY)

You have two dates for your first Patrick, 1830 and 1849. As you probably know, most of the Keohanes come from southwest County Cork (and eastern Kerry along the Cork border) in what used to be known as the Carbery area.My father came from Caheragh parish. The baptismal records for that parish have Patricks as follows: 1826; 1837; 1841; and 1843.
I have other partial listings as follows (father's name, date and place, if known): Nicholas, 1/1/1824; Oliver, 3/17/1849, Dunworley; John, 2/16/1854; John, 9/3/1854, Carrigeen.
If you know the names in order of Patrick's children and they followed a common Irish naming system, the first male child would be named for the father's father, the second for the mother's father, first female for the father's mother, second for the mother's mother.
Good luck.
