Hi Melisa,
I'm Toni, Granddaughter of Art and Marie Steinberger. My grandfather Art was the son of John and Mary. So that means John is my great grandfather, too. I don't have much more to tell you, but I'd love to learn what you know and could check with my mom and uncles to see what they know and compare notes.

Hope to hear from you.

Oh, my email address is: toeknee@hawaii.rr.com

Toni

His wife, Elizabeth James Kepler, was the daughter of Eli James and Elizabeth Kepler James. Which James family was this Eli James a member of?

I've read Johannas Kepler had four sons that lived to adulthood Ludwig b12/21/1607-1663; Cordula b1/22/1621; Fridmar b1/24/1623; and Hildebert b4/6/1625 I gather from your research none had male children. Did you see anything on Johannas grandfather Sebald and his sons Heinrich (Heinrich sons Heinrich, Christoph and Johannas); Sebaldus (children?); and Friedrich (children?). Like other Keplers, we too were told Johannas was part of our family tree but not necessarily direct decendents. Our Kepler family has several mathematical geniuses.

Looking for information on Virginia Elizabeth Stonehame born 23 March 1905 in Gomez, Terry County, Texas. Married William John Kepler 28 October 1926. Divorced (I think) in late 1933 or 1934, most likely in the Fort Worth, Texas area. William John Kepler then married the sister of Virginia, Sue Roberts Stoneham on 5 November 1934 in Crane County, Texas. Any information available on any of these folks will be appreciated.

Me again...I just checked the Sweezey.net site to see if it was still up and running, it is. The Clement Andrew Kepler listed there is my Grandfather. They have his date of birth listed as "About 1890". This may have been Emanuel and Margret's second child which did not survive. Clement Andrew was born in 1886 and is buried next to Essie J. in the Caseyville Cemetery in Caseyville Illinois. Next to them is their first daughter, my Aunt Mabel Meece, who died from childbirth complication in '37 or '38. I was just out of high school when we "planted" grandma Essie next to him. It was snowing and wet, and the hearse got stuck going around a bend at the top of the big hill in the cemetery. We all slogged up on foot to push laughing our butts off. If you knew our branch of the family and Grandma Essie herself, you'd understand and be laughing your butt off too. She always remembered the assassination of President McKinley in 1901 very vividly, but she just couldn't place who John F. Kennedy was to save herself. Such is life...

Hannah b;1832 and John b;1829, both born in Ohio, were married in 1851 in Hocking County Ohio. Emanuel b;1852, and William b;1854. According to the 1860 census they were already in Effingham and a third child is not listed. My earlier info from a family source had claimed 1862-63 as the arrival time with a third child born in route possibly in Indiana. Check out www.sweezey.net, lots of info there, Keplers and Sweazys/Sweezys seemed to marry into each other quit a bit as the two families migrated west during the first half of the 1800s. And my grandma's name was Essie J. not Essie Mae as I stated earlier. (Sorry bout that, I started a new job a couple years ago and have since put all this stuff aside due to lack of time...I'm a little rusty.)

Thank you so very much. Printed it off,and will work on it in am.
When were John and Hanna married? My ancestor, Amanda was married to a John Keplar in Effingham. She was married twice, the second time to a Mr. Wood. But she and Keplar had a child, Cora 1874, Samuel 1877 and John Lewis 1880.
I do know the frustration of the last names being a or e, or sometimes i, my Baumgardner line can be found with just Bumg, or with a t where the d is, it is really mixed up at times.
Illinois Marriage Records:
KEPLAR, JOHN W BUMGARDNER, AMANDA P 06/08/1873 00B/0082 EFFINGHAM married by Alexander Helton, Minister of Gospel.

Name: Amanda C.
Re: Kepler / Sweazy Family

John and Hannah were my Great Great Grandparents. John and Jacob bought railroad land in Effingham Co. and came there around 1862-63. John's oldest three children were born in Ohio, the oldest being my Great Grandfather Emanuel. There were at least two more, if not three, born in Illinois. As you probably know the record gets very sketchy here. Emanuel married Margret Finfrock, the daughter of a well off farmer in Altamount Il. just west of Effingham, circa early 1880s. One surviving child, my Grandfather Clement born 1886. He married another Sweazy from the Beecher City area named Essie Mae. Her father was William Henry Sweazy. John and Jacob seem to have vanished from the face of the Earth by this time. I've hit the brickwall chasing them for the past twenty years. Emanuel died between 1900-10, Margret in 1916. (My father remembered her as the Grandma that lived with them when he was very small...) Clement died in 1952, Essie died around 77-78. My father was thier oldest of five that had survived childhood. He was George Raymond Keplar 1910-2003. I strongly suspect Emanuel and Margret are buried in unmarked graves in Union Cemetery in Altamount. I've been there many times and searched for records-Funeral Home-City-Libraries-ect....Both local and Effingham County. Either non existant, or lost. Emanuel's brother William is buried there along with several Keplers from, I assume, Jacob's branch. Also several Finfrocks, some under married names. It was around the turn of the century that our branch changed the spelling from ER to AR. William was buried with the AR spelling in 1908. This spelling issue had me stuck for years! My father had never told me about the original spelling, it was his youngest brother Charles who once mentioned it. All of what I've written here was made possible by him simply letting me know this nasty little fact! Years! Years of frustration slapped away with one little, once thought unimportant, fact. I only know of one Keplar-Kepler around the Altamount-Effingham area now. She is an elderly woman in a nursing home. I hope this info has helped you out some, I KNOW how fustrating it can be chasing this family line down...I wish I could get a break and find out more info.

Murder Mystery 1919 Harriett Kepler's husband

In researching Harriett "Hattie" Kepler, born 2 Oct 1888 in Ross County, Ohio - I have information that she married Arthur Lightle in April 1909 in Ross County, Ohio. Harriett Kepler is a daughter of Emery Hall Kepler and Martha Newland.

I recently obtained the death certificate of Harriett Kepler's husband, Arthur Lightle, and uncovered a murder mystery. The death certificate states that Arthur Lightle died of "hemmorhage from the fermoral artery due to gun shot wounds. Homicidal." Place of death was listed as Paxton Township, Ross County, Ohio.

The death certificate also stated that Arthur Lightle was single although I show a marriage to Harriett Kepler on 29 Apr 1909 in Ross County, Ohio.

Does anyone have any information on this murder? Or on the family of Harriett Kepler and Arthur Lightle?

Any information appreciated.

My husband descends from a sister of the James Kepler who married Julia Steimling. His sister, Mary, married Joseph Fronk in Juniata County, PA. in 1834.They moved to Illinois around 1846. A younger sister, Elizabeth Kepler, also moved with them. She married Benedict Smidle in 1850 in Illinois. I have been trying to learn the name of the parents of James, Mary and Elizabeth. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Sorry for the delay in replaying have been gone for the past three weeks. Just returned to find your message. Thank you for your information. And yes to your question about Eleanor Kepler being John and Jacob's sister. She married William S. Sweazy on 29 Mar 1848 in Hocking Co., OH and they had five children. Mary Ann, Susannah, John Logan, (my line), Sarah Louise, and William Henry. I will be more than happy to share what I have on any of these families and like you not all of it has been proven. And mistakes are make when typed on to the laptop, so always open to corrections. Email is askewj@alltel.net and more than happy to exhange what I have. My grandmother was Mary Jane Netta Sweazy Dial, daughter of John Logan Sweazy.

Look forward to hearing from you again

Re: Kepler / Sweazy Family

Not sure, but think John Kepler who married Hanna Sweazy was a brother to Jacob T. who married Melinda Sweazy. I believe John then married Amanda Bumgardner, 08 May 1873 in Effingham, and they had three children, Cora/Flora, Samuel and John Louis. Is Eleanor (Ellen) Kepler a sister to John and Jacob? I am researching the Bumgardner line, and have added some info to the Keplar/Kepler family, to see if I can make the connection down the line to my Bumgardner/Baumgardner line. Amanda then married Napoleon Bonaparte Jerome Wood in Poplar Bluff, MO, and had a son by him. Sure is a twisted path to find all them. I am a victim of getting too much information, then getting totally confused. Willing to share what I have with the warning that some of it is speculation. Have some marriage info and death certificate info.
KEPLER Snyder & Juniata Cnties - Daniel C, wife Mary Eliz or Eliz Mary, kids Eldon, Minnie, May, Lydia, Maud, Hazel

Is anyone else researching this family?

Trying to learn more about my KEPLER clan, the origin of my great-grandma Minnie Kepler.

They seem to have been in Freemont and Perry, Snyder County PA at least around 1880. They were-

Daniel C., head
wife, wife Mary Elizabeth or Elizabeth Mary
son Eldon
daughters Minnie, May, Lydia, Maud (Hazel was born after this census).

Daniel C (a druggist) and wife Mary Elizabeth or Elizabeth Mary seem to have divorced by the 1900 census. She is living with her uncle William or Willis Watt in Monroe Twp in Juniata County PA, and she's listed as divorced. By 1910 she is living with her son in law Daniel H. Romberger, husband of her daughter Minnie as of 1895, in Harrisburg's 9th ward, Dauphin County, and listed (incorrectly) as widowed, having borne 6 children, of whom 4 are alive.

In the meantime, her ex-husband, Daniel C. Kepler is in 1900 living in Franklin Twp Snyder County with one child whose name is illegible, but as it ends in "EL" is probably Hazel. By 1910, he's living in Franklin Twp Snyder County and has Hazel and her husband and kids: his son in law is Elmer McAfee, and his grandkids Donald W., Elmer D., and Fay J. McAfee.

By 1920, both Daniel C. Kepler and his former wife disappear off censuses. I do not know what became of him.

She moved with her son in law's family to Allentown Lehigh County PA around 1914/15 or so, and died and was buried there. Her tombstone in Greenwood Cemetery reads "Mary E. Kepler, Feb. 15 1844- Feb. 18, 1916". It is at the front and center of the ROMBERGER family stone, as she was the first of the family to die after the relocation.

By the way, daughter Minnie, wife of Daniel H. Romberger, was a widow, and only known info about her first husband at this time is that he was a GREENHOE, and that he appears to have died about 1893 according to her Dauphin County marriage license to Daniel Romberger in 1895 where she states she has been a widow about 2 years.

ANY info about this KEPLER family is not too small, as I currently have very little. I'd love to know more about Daniel C. and his wife, as well as her maiden name, and anything about their parents and kids. I hope I've provided enough info to help any reader determine if there's a match, but if not, please write anyway and let's see what we come up with. Thanks!

Not my line, but leaving in case it helps someone...

Mary Kepler (age 25) married A. M. Garman (age 24, a teacher) on January 24, 1891. The marriage license was from Snyder County.

It appears to have been a short marriage. When Mr. Garman remarried later, he said he was widowed 4/30/1891.

I got this info by telephone from a clerk, and do not have further info.

Need help with a possible Hessian soldier

I have hit a brick wall with an ancestor of mine, James Brady Kepler, March 3 1796-March 18, 1861. He was born in Lancaster, Pa. and we think his father might have been a Hessian soldier who stayed in the US after the Revolutionary War. Any ideas on how to find his parents?

Hi Bill-don't know if you'll receive this as you original message is a few years old. I saw your request and was interested because i'm from Nelsonville and my grandparents Andrew and Viola Keplar lived in the area. I started checking and have found that there is a Keplar Cementary located back behind Danas Tire(Danas located on Rte 33 coming into Nels) they say no stones are there just a few Devils Forks(?). I'm going down home for Thanksgiving and hope to be able to check this out. they say you need a 4 wheel drive to get back to it. I will let you know if anything comes of this. If I don't see a message from you I may e-mail you directly to see if your still interested. Debby

I have a photo of the home of Jacob and Rosanna Kepler,in Hamilton, Indiana @1905. These were the parents of Gertrude Kepler(Hoch) and the grandparents of Alleene Hoch, my grandmother. They were @ 50+ years in the photo, but I don't have any records of their birth, or family prior. My mother seems to think their was a Samuel Kepler too. Gertrude had a sister, Bertha, who later married a man named Swift. I am also looking for info, so lets see if this helps us. Thank you.

The elder Sarah was the administrator of the will of William Johnson in Franklin Co. in 1813 and deeded property at Columbus to John Kerr in 1820 and 1822.
