Glen,
Few people at this time were literate other than the clergy. Bibles were written in Latin and copied by hand until Martin Luther translated it to German and Guttenberg began "mass producing" books. Few people owned books or could write their own name. Names were dictated to the priests who spelled as best they could. I just finished "Out of the Flames" by Lawrence and Nancy Goldstone. I highly recommend it.
