Mrs. Kate Kerch poisoned two of her children, threw two in a well and killed herself

Appears in the Terrell Times-Star, Terrell, Kaufman County, Texas, 16 June 1893 ...

Kills Four of Her Children

Parkersburg, West Virginia, June 14 - Mrs. Kate Kerch, living ten mile from here, having lost her reason, poisoned two of her young children, threw two others into as well then killed herself. She tried to kill her eight children, but four were saved by a desperate struggle of her 14 year old daughter, Mollie. The family is in good circumstances. No cause is assigned for the woman's derangement. All five are dead. The husband was away from home at the time. She killed the two smallest by poisoning their mile with strychnine.

Kerch/Kerchenski

Our Kerch family had shortened their name from Kerchenski to Kerch. But only a few of the relatives have done this. I have taken the name back to an "August Kerchenski" whom came over from Prussia born in Aug of 1844. His 5 children are Joseph, Stan, Frank, William and Mary. Our Kerchenski's were traced back to Duncan Twnshp, PA or Cambria PA. Many live in Cuyahoga Co., Ohio now.

Any Info On this Family?

Roberto,
How ironic that you fathers middle name is my first name and your name is my brother (Robert). I have talked to a quite a few Kerch's throughout the US to get some form of where the name originates. There is also a city called Kerch on the Black Sea, about 40km E of Yalta. Do you have any family tree information you are willing to share? Hope to hear from you.
Anthony Kerch

Glen,
Few people at this time were literate other than the clergy. Bibles were written in Latin and copied by hand until Martin Luther translated it to German and Guttenberg began "mass producing" books. Few people owned books or could write their own name. Names were dictated to the priests who spelled as best they could. I just finished "Out of the Flames" by Lawrence and Nancy Goldstone. I highly recommend it.
I am a descendant of Elizabeth Kerch, Born 4-Dec-1821 in Alsace-Lorraine. She came to America with her parents (Conrad Kerch and Maria Kerch) and her two brothers (Conrad II and Phillip). Arrived in America approx. December 25, 1831. She married George Baier on November 28, 1849, in Knox Township, Columbiana County, Ohio. Their son, George Baier (II), married Elmira Schell on 4-Dec-1881. George (II) and Elmira then gave birth to my paternal grandmother, Harriet F. Baier. If you find a connection, please reply. There are many Kerch's in Ohio and Indiana--I know that they used to have reunions in Indiana.

Greetings,

I don't know if I can help you much. The Kerch family were are working with came from Bohemia in the mid 1860s and 1870s. There is a town in western Bohemia called Domazlice and that is where most of the people from this area come from (we live east and a little south of Green Bay near a very small town called Stangelville). We have no reason to think that there is a Russian connection with this particular family.
There was a branch of the Kerch family that relocated from here up into the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. However, the iron mining did not go well, and they either moved back here, or moved on to Detroit and Chicago.

Sorry I couldn't be of more help.

Jim
Greetings,

Of all the Kerch information you have come across, is it all from Germany? My g.g.g.grandfather was a man named Franz Kerch. He was born Oct 14, 1817 in the town of Breze, Tabor Co, Bohemia. He moved to America and died near Tisch Mills, WI (located southeast of Green Bay on the Kewaunee / Manitowoc Co line). He had four daughters and only one son, so the surname Kerch is not very common around here, although he has a huge number of decendants. In the oldest records, the name is spelled 'Krch'.

Do you have any records or insight into this family?

If anyone would like to write me about this family, you can e-mail me at Wisstein@netnet.net.

Have a Great Day,

Jim Steinberger
