Hello there! Sylvia's mother, Viola was my Grandfather's first cousin. My Mother knew Sylvia growing up and I would love to put our families back in touch. We lost track of this side of the family when Viola moved from Toronto. I have info posted on ancestry.com on two family trees - the Bukkosy family tree and I am trying to connect our family in to the information that I have on the Wesselenyi family tree. Viola's grandfather on the Wesselenyi side is my missing link. He is Miklos Wesselenyi's (my grandfather's) grandfather as well and I don't know his first name. Please feel free to contact me directly at llbukkosy@yahoo.com.

Hi -

Looking for any information or relatives for Karoly Keresztes who was married to Sylvia Taugner and lived in British Columbia, Canada. Karoly would have been born in 1920's. Sylvia was born to Viola Wesselenyi (b1908 in Hersham, Hungary and moved to Canada) and Nicholas Taugner (B1905 in Romania and moved to Canada).

- Laura

Hi Magda. I am the son of Jan Keresztes born smrzovka in the Czech republic. His father was ondrej Kerestes born in Barbovo in the Ukraine in 1916. I am trying to get the name of the church he was baptised in to get his fathers name.
We have the coat of arms dating back to 1624 and we used to work somehow for King Ferdinand II.

Regards Paul

Hi Klara,

Great to hear from you. Regretfully, I have very little info on my ancestors. My father emigrated from Makó in the south of Hungary to Sweden 40 years ago. His father, Laszlo Keresztes, moved to Makó when becoming stationed there and then meeting my grandmother. On my grandfatners side, I know we had relatives in Budapest. I have most of their names, but that's about it. It doens't go any furtherback then to my grandfathers sibblings and possibly his parents. I have to check that last detail though, my father who is my only source in this does not share my interest in our heritage.

Anyhow, I have some sort of copy of a document stating the nobility and origin of Csik-Bankfalvi Keresztes, as well as some palm-size ceramic pieces showing the family crest. These were maid by an elderly among my Budapest-relatives who had studied our heritage.

Unfourtunately, she has since passed away and there isn't really anyone to talk to any more. I guess that it would be up to me to look things up on my own, but its difficult to do that from Sweden, and I really haven't had the time.

You have been kind enough to share some of the info you have, so next time I visit my dad, I will try and get a few names out from him. Will see if there are any matches.

With regard to the DNA-thing: It sounds interesting i guess, but I haven't considered it seriously. If you should come to look into it and find anything interesting; I would be very thankful if you would share your thoughts.

Best regards...........Peter in Stockholm

Hi Klara,

I am not a Keresztes myself, but it is one of the surnames we want to test for our Hungarian Bukovina DNA Project. Here is a link to the project website, where you can learn more about it:

http://www.familytreedna.com/public/HungarianBukovinaSurname...

We have a Mihaly Keresztes born about 1745, then six brothers(?)They are Andras (born about 1776, Antal (about 1765), Janos (about 1780), Jozsef (about 1760), Marton (about 1781), and Mozes (about 1774).

The family likely came from somewhere in Csik, but we do not know exactly which village.

The church records of Bukovina start only anout 1785 (when the five Bukovina villages were founded), so without DNA, we will not know if they all have a common ancestor.

Beth Long

Hi Peter,

I just googled Csikbankfalvi Keresztes and picked up your message, as I'm a Bankfalvi K., too. My father Arpad K. emigrated 1956 to Austria. His father was: Arpad K. (1901-1982), grandfather Arpad K. (1858-1909), grand-grand-father Kalman K. (1825-1880) > Kalman K. (1825-1880) > Antal K. (1782-1864) >Janos K. (1782-1864)... the other you can find in thebooks. I'm interested from which side you coming... Janos had 8 sons with 3 wifes :-))

also what's about the DNA project..

Best regards from Vienna
Klara

i am paul keresztes son of john keresztes and grandson of andrej keresztes. andrej keresztes was born in Barbov,1916, a village about 20kms south of mukachevo, Ukraine. it was destroyed during ww2.he immigrated to the czech republic when the boarders changed in about 1933. we are trying to find out the name of his father and birthdate and where the archives are kept to verify.we have seen the coate of arms and there was a keresztes I and keresztes II which were affiliated with King Ferdinand II in 1600's. interestingly, there are a few keresztes listing seeking info too.apparently, there where three brothers who worked for the King at that time and their coate of arms were different but affiliated with the church.
any feedback?

Hi Tom,

I have about a hundred Keresztes in my Bukovina database (but none go back further than the 1780's). Most likely, all are descendants of a Pal Keresztes and Terezia (?), who emigrated to Bukovina from somewhere in Transylvania.

Are you interested in the DNA project? It would be interesting to see if you and the Bukovina Kesesztes have a common male ancestor.

I have lots of living Keresztes in the database; some in Canada, but most in Tolna County, Hungary. This is where the Bukovina Hungarians were resettled after WWII.

Beth Long

Hi Peter,

After Madefalva (1764), several thousand Szekely fled Csik and Haromszek counties. Most of them settled in Moldavia.
Then, about 1785, these "deserters" were offered amnesty if they would colonize new villages in Bukovina (which Austria had just aquired from the Ottoman Empire).

There was also a subsequent "wave" who emigrated directly to Bukovina from Transylvania in the 1780s, once the colonies were established.

So, it's quite possible that the Keresztes-s who settled in Bukovina is related to your own Keresztes ancestor. y-DNA testing would determine if you and a Bukovina (male)Keresztes descendant had a common male ancestor.

In our database, we have three male Keresztes born in the 1780s, but haven't been able to get any farther back thean that (since we're at the limit of the church records).

Here is a link to the project description:

http://www.familytreedna.com/(vxaqnt45pgdarwyf0snaf03e)/surn...

Unfortunately, the test kits cost $100 each, and I realize this is quite expensive for people living in Romania. On the other hand, it's only necessary to test one male member of the family (y-dna will be the same for all of them). So I'm hoping that if whole families are interested, they can each contribute a little and select one member to be tested.

Here is a link to information about y-DNA testing in general:

http://www.familytreedna.com/dna101.html

Best Regards,

Beth

Nice to meet you anyway,
Gloria McEvoy.Babot@tesco.net

Dear Odette:
I am not familiar with the names that you listed in your last e-mail.
My husband's family has a long line of Stephen's for first names. They
were from Hungary originally. They moved to the US in Ohio in the early 1900's.
I am sure there is a relationship here but not sure yet just how. That name
cannot be very common. Keep writing if you discover something. I forwarded your letter
to a Keresztes (now known as Kanz) who lives in Minneaplis, Minnesota, and is
very interested in family history.
Mary

Hi Julianne, Thanks for responding so quick, you know when I first typed in the name I was shocked to see it actually appear. It's great! Anyway to see if we are somehow related I have listed my grandparents names maybe there is a connection somewhere along the line. G'father Lajos Keresztes G'mother Gizela Benko. Do you know of them or can you check with your parents? I hope there is a connection this could be fun hey? I know my dad still has some cousins in Hungary and he is planning a visit (maybe) in about June/July this year. He used to be a boxer in the US and Aust. many years ago and when he was here in Aust. someone had given him a leather bound book of all his clippings/photos etc and he sent it over to Hung. to show family but never received it back. So I have asked him to try and locate it when he goes over - I hope he can. Anyway I'll talk to you again later - I'm thrilled about this I just wish we could pass on messages more personally like e-mail but I am a bit hesitant in blasting it over the net like this. Do you think there could be any risk in putting email in this type of message? Take care talk later. Odette

Hi there. Interesting connection between Keresztes, Ohio and a name change to Krastes. Could you give a little more information on the time of the arrival, what the person in Ohio did and when the name was changed.

Apparently in my family, before WWI there was a Keresztes that went to America and landed in Ohio. He changed his name, but to what or when we do not know. He did write letters to the family in Budapest. Although they are lost, my father (died 1996) did mention that at one time they existed, largely because he tried contact his long lost cousin. We think Keresztes worked for a railroad in Ohio. If this rings any bells, let me know.

Also, my Dad did not know if he married or had any progeny. A probate search in Ohio showed nothing, but if he moved or since he changed his name, how could it?

Hey dear lost cousin. I think I have heard about you from my mother. If indeed you are the cousin I am thinking of, then you speak fluent French and are working for the Swedish government in, shall I say, foreign affairs? Contact me at peminc@aol.com and tell me what part of the tree you have. I have a parts of a Csickbankfalvai family tree that goes back to 1700s. I am working on other branches of the family that are interesting and to 1500s. There could be much to share.

By the way, I heard earliest family reference was around 1302.

Tom Keresztes
Princeton, NJ, USA

According to the history I've been told, my grandfather, Steve, came to the United States from Hungary before WWI and lived in Ohio and eventually Michigan. My father, Steven, passed away Oct. 25, 2002. There are a lot of us in the state of MIchigan. If anybody has any history to add to this, I'd be thrilled.

Hi Peter,

I have quite a few Keresztes in my own database (of Hungarians from Bukovina). Did your family emigrate to Sweden from Tolna County, Hungary? That's where most of the Bukovina Hungarians relocated after WWII. If they do have a connection to Bukovina, I may have some information for you.

Beth Long

Hi!
I'm 29 and I live in Sweden. My father came to Sweden from Hungary in -68 and I was born here a couple of years later. In recent years I´ve felt an increasing interest for my heritage so I´ve checked some things up. It seems a relative of mine has made a rigorous "geneology study" (or whatever it´s called) and found out that my most distant ancestor by the name of Keresztes was a man who was given this name in 1241. She has also found the family crest of the "Csik-Bankfalvi Keresztes" family to which I belong. I shure would appreciate if someone would contact me to discuss these kinds of topics.
