Information that I have just located, indicates that Henry Kearley was born on 31 January 1823 in Hobart, Tasmania and married Caroline Bacon born 4 May 1830 at St Lawerance, Warwick, England on 26 September 1849. The couple settled at Undayla, near Bute, SA and raised 11 children.

This info has been provided to John Horton (Heaven and Hell) webpage. Julie

Kerly/Kerby - Bowden in VA 1734

This notice appears in the history of a Nicholas Bowden who was the brother of Mary Bowden Carley/Cearley who's son William Carley, Jr m. Martha Patty Carter, founders of the Cearley families of VA and NC in the mid 1700's. We believe that the John Kerby referred to is actually John KERLY, son of Henry, Jr, son of Capt. Henry Kerley of Sudbury, Lancaster and Marlborough in the MA Bay Colony -- if anyone has a copy or can direct me to a site showing this Will, we may be able to connect John Kerly back to the Immigrant Kerly lines.

Referring to Nicholas Bowden/Boden/Boaden, b. January 19, 1673 at Saco/Scarborough, Black Point, Maine to John and Grace Bully Bowden, son of Capt. Ambrose and Marie Lethebridge Bowden --

"The earliest date his name appeared in the public records of Virginia was the year 1734, when he was witness to the will of ***John Kerby **** in Elizabeth City County (now the City of Hampton). I do however know that Dock B is from Alabama and Rilla is from Texas. As for their parents, I have no record of them or any other siblings that they may have had. If you have any information, please contact me.

Edmond of the "Confidence"

From John Kerley, researcher in England

will of john kerley 1581 donhead st mary wiltshire. mentions 2 sons. john & edmond. it seems that this edmond is the 1 that sailed with william in 1638. is he a cousin ? i think there is a family tie with william of ashmore as he had land in donhead. the more kerley's we find it seems to make work more frustrating but it should get easier. this is the only edmond kerley found in all of my research so it has to be the 1.

This helps to prove the theory that William of the Confidence is NOT the first Kerley in America -- his uncle, William, b. 1602 and father of Mary b 1627, Capt. Henry b. 1632 and William, Jr. b 1633 are the original core family. William of the "Confidence" b. 1621 according to his testimony

5 William Kerly/Kerley/Carleys

I have identified 5 William Kerly/Kerley/Carleys and would love to have any feedback from this List and Digest readers -- especially RE: William 5.

1, Senior William, b. @ 1598 d 1670, Will mentions sons Henry, William and John Deval (not a Kerly but who married Hannah White, the niece of William's wife Ann White, and sister of Elizabeth, wife of Capt. Henry Kerley);

2, William, d. 1684, Henry was Executor and was named as his brother in his Last Will and Testament. Also mentioned in the Will was wife Anna, daughter of Thomas King, they were married Oct 6, 1646 in Sudbury, so he could not have been the William, b. 1633; Since Anna is named as his widow, Rebecca Jossleyn could not have been a 3rd wife of the first William Kerly, she would have been his second wife.

3, William, d . 1676, son of Capt. Henry, killed in Massacre with mother Elizabeth White Carley, and brother Henry, and others - also John Deval, husband of Elizabeth's sister Hannah, both women were niece's of William Sr.s wife, Ann White Kerly;

4. William, d. 1719, buried at Lexington with wife Jane, (thought to be King), ae 86, making his dob 1633 which corresponds to the known dobs of William, Sr.'s sons Henry - 1632, and William - 1633 - This William known to be in Sudbury, Marlborough and Cambridge/Lexington with Jane who he married in 1665/6 in Sudbury;

5. William, b. @1680, married Mary Bowden, died intestate in Boston or at sea in 1739 - no known parents except known to be from Marlborough. Mary, b. 1684, was the daughter of John and Grace Bully Bowden/Boaden, John was the son of Capt. Ambrose Boaden, a founder of Saco, York, ME and father of Nicholas Bowden/Bouten b. Jan. 19, 1673. Boadens were probably Hugenots.

Thanks for any information -
Judy Schreiber
Valdosta, Ga

First Kerley in America

It should be noted that Rebecca Jude Josselyn Kerly, third wife of William Kerly, b. 1602 survived after the his death 1670 at Lancaster. This first William could not possibly be the William of the "Confidence" (b 1621) as the William of the "Confidence" noted in his Will that his wife Anna was still living at the time of his death in 1684. Nor could it have been William, Jr, son of the first William, as he was buried at Lexington in 1719 two years prior to his wife Jane, who is buried in the same plot. Ages at time of death bear out that he was William, Jr, b 1633. Therefore - William, b. 1602, was first family to go to Sudbury and Lancaster and the William of the Confidence did not get to Sudbury until about 1643/4 where he married Anna King in 1645. See notes under James Carley of Connecticut (1788 - 1858)

Kerley/Kerly/Carsley/Carlsly/Kersley - William

In the "History of Sudbury", Alfred Hudson refers to two William Kerleys - William Kerley, Sr and plain William Kerley. One of these Williams married twice more after the death of his first wife, Ann White, who he married in England in 1625. The third wife was Rebecca Joslin, widow of Thomas, whom William is known to have married on March 16, 1664 at Lancaster. The Joslins came to America on "The Increase" in 1635 and her age at that time is given as 43, which makes her date of birth @ 1592. I sincerely doubt that the William of the Confidence, arriving in America with brother Edmund, b. 1616, who is shown to have been born in 1621 according to Court testimony he gave in 1666 and 1667 when he stated his age as being 45 and 46 respectively, would have been the William who took Thomas Joslin's widow as his third wife. Our information from a Kerley researcher in England today, is that William, Sr. was born in England about 1602. At the time of this third marriage, William would have been 62 ae and Rebecca 72 ae, and she outlived him. The William of the Confidence married Anna King b. 1624/5, daughter of Thomas, on October 06, 1646 at Sudbury, which puts her in the age bracket most closely related to this William. In this Sudbury History, children of William and Anna King are said to be Mary, Sarah and Hannah, however these daughters are referred to in the Will of William, Jr, (b 1633 by the age written on his headstone) dated 22 August 1716, probated 15 June 1719 at Lexington, so they are incorrectly attributed to the wrong couple.

In this History of Sudbury, there is no reference to either Mary, Henry, (later Capt.), or William, Jr, children of William, SR and Ann White Kerly, born 1627, 1632 and 1633 in England, respectively. However, in the write- up of William Kerley, on p. 49, the spelling is also given as Carsley or Carlsly, (and I have also noted "Kersley" in other references), and there is a notation in the History of the Henry Rowley family in other publications, as well as in the history related to Anthony Annable as follows - With ANTHONY ANNABLE, Henry Rowley was bondsman for William Kersley of Barnstable on 7 December 1641 [PCR 2:28]. Since the William of the Confidence is supposedly in Sudbury at that time, would/could the William Kersley of Barnstable in 1641 be the William of the Confidence? I can find no reference in any immigration documentation that tells us when William, Sr along with wife Ann, and children Mary, Henry and William, arrived in America but he is referred to frequently in the early history of Sudbury which also outlines the formation of the town of Marlborough in which the Kerleys took an active part and where those still living after the Massacre at Lancaster in 1676 can be found resident, with the exception of William, Jr, b 1633, and wife Jane and their family, who were in Lexington prior to the Massacre.

As you can see, the history of the Kerly/Kerley/Carly/etc family has gotten so confused, mainly because there were three Williams active in such a brief period of record, not to mention the extra William, son of Henry and Elizabeth White Kerley, who was killed along with his mother, in the Lancaster Massacre of 1676. If anyone has closely read the histories of Sudbury, Lancaster and Marlborough and can help us shed some light on the confusion that has been published regarding this family, please get in touch -- Thanks,

Judy Schreiber
Valdosta, GA

Re: descendant of Henry Kerley

Charley -

Capt. Henry, son of William the Immigrant and probably a cousin of William of the Confidence -- dates for this second William show convincingly that he is NOT the son of the Immigrant, although they all came from Ashmore, Devon, England.

Capt. Henry's second marriage - to Elizabeth Ward, widow of John Howe, Jr -- is known to have produced 2 daughters and is considered by Henry Nourse in the History of Marlborough to also have borne at least 2 sons.

I am descended of a Mariner William Carley of Marlborough, b. @ 1680 and who is known to have married Mary Bowden, daughter of John and Grace Bully Bowden - John being the son of Capt. Ambrose Bowden of Scarborough/Saco, York Maine --- William and Mary were married in Boston in 1703 by Cotton Mather and this William was a member of the crew of the Province Galley, which was the first ship built in New England for the defense of the Mass Bay Colony. He later sailed many other ships and on one voyage, transported a John Carter back to America from London - 1722. The children of William and Mary included a son William, baptized in 1718 who we - the researchers - believe to be the William who married Martha Patty (Patsy) Carter. This William was given a land grant in VA in the
1740 for services to the Crown. William the Mariner, died in 1739, possibly at sea.

I am currently trying to find the connection between the John Carter transported out of London in 1722 to the Rev. Samuel Carter who purchased the Lancaster property of William the Immigrant from Capt. Henry in 1688, or to the "Secretary" John Carter, son of Thomas, who was active in the government of VA in the early to mid 1700's.

If you can provide any insight into the Carter family, we would be very grateful.

Judy

The William Kerley who married H(Anna)h King was the William of the Confidence, b 1620/1 - arriving in America in 1638. The William, father of Capt. Henry b. 1632 (m. 1 Elizabeth White, m. Elizabeth Ward) and William, Jr b. 1633 (m. Jane Unknown) was actually William the Immigrant, b. abt 1602 m. Ann White in abt 1625. William the Immigrant was married 3 times - Ann White, Bridget Rowlandson and Rebecca Joselynn.
William of the Confidence d. 1684 and named no children in his Will and called Capt. Henry "Brother" -- obviously not a true brother but perhaps a cousin and "brother-in-arms".

My mother was a Kearley living in Dorset. As i am just starting to research family history I have found that the a frequently drops in and out of the surname. I have also strted grouping the kerleys according to main area of residence in Dorset as there are several branches. we seem to belong to a branch bsed around Sturminster Marshall in 1800s. Have you found the same patterns? Alison

Hi Alison,

So far I only have one Kerly on my tree. I only have marriage info for her, and I was hoping to find someone who knew who her parents were. I have not been able to find a birth record for her. My Mary Kerly was married 17 Jan 1705 in Wimborne Minster.

I have found small differences in spelling to be very common in many of my family surnames in Dorset. I have one ancestor whose surname is spelled differently by the same vicar each time one of his children was baptized. I think back in the days when most of the people were illiterate, the person keeping the records spelled the name as it sounded to him. I also have family lines that spread to several areas of Dorset, my Ridout line especially. But none of my direct lines go into Sturminster Marshall at the current time. Good luck with your searches, if you come across my Mary, I would enjoy hearing from you.

Doris

Re: descendant of Henry Kerley

I am trying to find out if my ancestor William Garrett Kerley, s/o James Kerley and Elizabeth Roric of NC and grandson of Daniel and Ann Kerley of Albermarle, VA is related to your Henry Kerley and Sarah Garrett line. William G. Kerley was born in Wayne Co., TN 1835 where Henry died and claims both his grandfathers "fought in the Revolutionary War." (from a 1911 Arkansas Confederate Census interview.) What documentation have you found on Henry Kerley, Sr. from Albermarle, VA?
