Re: William of the Confidence Not First Kerly in America

The first William Kerly, born abt 1602 at Ashmore, Dorset, England, married an Ann White in England in 1625. They had 3 recorded and surviving children, Mary b. 1627, married Richard Smith, Sr; Henry b. 1632; and William, Jr b. 1633, all at Ashmore. He is noted in the History of Sudbury as having been there by 1637 and is known to have married two more times after the death of Ann White Kerly in 1658 at Lancaster, Britchet Bradstreet Rowlandson and Rebecca Jude Josselyn, Rebecca having survived as his widow when he died in 1670 at Lancaster.

A second William Kerley, Capt., b. 1621 according to "Ages from Court Records 1636 to 1700, Vol.I: Essex, Middlesex, and Suffolk Counties,Massachusetts"; Melinde Lutz Sanborn, Gen.Pub.Co., 2003
-William Kerly....age 45 in 1666....MCC folio 40
-William Kerly.....46 in 1667....MCC folio 44
is the William I believe to be the William who came to America aboard "The Confidence" in 1638 with whom is commonly believed to be his brother Edmond, b. 1616 according to the listing of passengers for that ship. He was most likely a nephew of the William, Sr, b. 1602. He (William) is thought to have gone directly to Sudbury but I have found this listing in a posting on the internet which has since been removed, probably because of it's inflammatory content -
http://members.aol.com/wdwylie6/1600-1649.htm
1641 - On December 7, “William Kersley shall personally appeare at the next General Court of our said soueraigne lord the King, to be holden for this gouernment, to answere to all such matters as shalbe (on his said master's behalf) objected against him for vncleane carriages towards men that he hath lyen withall, and abide the further order of the Court, and not depart the same without lycence; that then, et cetera.” 241
http://search.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/sse.dll?rank=1&gsfn=w...
With ANTHONY ANNABLE, Henry Rowley was bondsman for William Kersley of Barnstable on 7 December 1641 [PCR 2:28].
(The name Kersley is also noted as a spelling for Kerley.)

We know this second William appears in Sudbury around 1645/6 as that is when he married Anna King, daughter of Thomas King, another of the first settlers of Sudbury. This William is noted in Marlborough in 1669 where he died in 1684, his widow Anna surviving him there, and I believe this couple to be the parents of Bartholomew, b. according to: "American Genealogical-Biographical Index (AGBI) about Bartholomew Carley
Name: Bartholomew Carley
Birth Date: 1650
Birthplace: Massachusetts
Volume: 25
Page Number: 70
Reference: Gen. Column of the " Boston Transcript". 1906-1941.( The greatest single source of material for gen. Data for the N.E. area and for the period 1600-1800. Completely indexed in the Index.): 22 Mar 1933, 6185 " -- (This Bartholomew is commonly attributed to be a son of Capt. Henry Kerley and his first wife, Elizabeth White Kerley, who was killed during the Massacre at Lancaster in 1676, but there is no mention of any other survivors of the Kerley family, other than known children of that couple. [Henry married the following year, Elizabeth Ward Howe, daughter of William and Elizabeth Ward of Sudbury and Marlborough, widow of John Howe, Jr., and they had at least 4 children, two daughters named and noted in his Will and at least two sons, unnamed, but noted by one of Henry's biographer's, as being the Mariner, William Carley, who was married to Mary Bowden in Boston in 1703 by Cotton Mather, and whose son, William, Jr was the founder with wife Martha Patty Carter Kerly, of the Kearley family later of VA and NC.] Bartholomew appears to be the only child of William and Anna.)

The third William, b. 1633 in England, son of the first William, married a Jane Unknown at Sudbury in 1666 and was buried in the Robbins Cemetery, East Village of Lexington in 1719 along with his wife Jane, who also died there in 1721. This William left Sudbury and appears to have lived from 1670 to 1675 at
Lancaster, but not at Marlborough at all. Their children were all females and are noted in his Will of 1719 along with his widow, Jane.

Almost all of the written history of this family is centered around this second William, b 1621, although it is noted in the Sudbury history that there was a William, Sr, (b 1602), who most attribute to be the second William and claim that he, the first William, is the one who came to America on the Confidence -- an impossibility when one stops to thoroughly read this above information. This William, Sr was the person responsible for the laying out of roads and designing of bridges in the Sudbury/Lancaster area and was generally associated with other settlers of the same age group, whereas the second William was tied to the Colony Artillery and involved in the defense of these townships during the King Phillip Wars.

William of the Confidence Not First Kerly in America

It should be noted that the third wife - Rebecca Jude Josselyn Kerly, third wife of William Kerly, b. 1602 survived after the his death 1670 at Lancaster. This first William could not possibly be the William of the "Confidence" (b 1621) as the William of the "Confidence" noted in his Will that his wife Anna was still living at the time of his death in 1684. Nor could it have been William, Jr, son of the first William, as he was buried at Lexington in 1719 two years prior to his wife Jane, who is buried in the same plot. Ages at time of death bear out that he was William, Jr, b 1633. Therefore - William, b. 1602, was first family to go to Sudbury and Lancaster and the William of the Confidence did not get to Sudbury until about 1643/4 where he married Anna King in 1645. See notes under James Carley of Connecticut (1788 - 1858)

William Kerly in King Philip's War

That would have to relate to William Kerly, the Immigrant, b. 1602 and
Planter at Hull in 1637 who was in Sudbury by 1640 and Lancaster by 1654 where he
died in 1670.
Ensign William of the Confidence of 1638, The Immigrant's nephew(?), b.
1620/21 was made Freeman at Marlborough in 1666 where he lived until he died in
1684, while William, Jr. b. 1633, stayed in Sudbury until about 1672 when he
and wife Jane were briefly in Marlborough on the way to Cambridge by 1673 and
in Lexington by 1692. I don't have a date for his becoming Freeman.

This seems to be the only way to separate these 3 Williams whose names
appear on common documents until they move away from each other --
Revised Kerly History

Janice,
Thank you for taking the time to download all of that Kerly information, unfortunately modern investigation has shown that much of what was reported and published many years ago, now shows a lot of strange holes -- for instance -
in the listing for Planters at Hull in 1637 there is noted a William Kerly, who we now take to be the first and eldest of the Kerlys to be in America -- this would be William the Immigrant, b. @ 1598, his wife Ann White, b @ 1600, daughter Mary, b. 1627; son Henry, b. 1632, and son William, b. 1633.
Daughter Mary is known to have married Richard Smith, Sr, and to have died in 1654 -
Henry married (1) - Elizabeth White, who was killed in the Massacre at Lancaster in 1676 while Henry was in Boston seeking more help to ward off an imminent Indian attack which came sooner than thought - their son William was also killed in that attack but son Henry, Jr, b. 1657 survived along with son Bartholomew and other daughters and possibly son Joseph. Capt. Henry m. (2) - Elizabeth Ward, widow of John Howe, Jr. in 1677. They had 2 known daughters and it is noted that there were probably at least 2 sons - a William, b. before 1684 and now perhaps this Joseph mentioned in the births at Boston in 1680.
The William, Jr. b. 1633, m. Jane Unknown in 1666 at Sudbury but left by before 1692 for Lexington, where he, Jane and a daughter Elizabeth were buried between 1719 - 1721. This William's Will filed in 1719 listed seven
daughters, one son-in-law and one grandson, not a Kerley/Carley.
As you have stated, William the Immigrant took for his third wife, Rebecca Jude Josselyn, widow of the Thomas mentioned in your listings of early arrivals at Hull and Sudbury and she survived him. (His second wife was Bridget
Bradstreet, widow of Thomas Rowlandson)
The William and the Edmond Kerley who arrived in America in 1638 aboard the Confidence are now noted as such - William, b. 1621 as determined by court testimony he gives about his age in Middlesex County records about 1666/7, is the William who married Hannah (Anna) King. He appears to have died without issue as his wife is the only person - other than Henry, whom he calls brother - named in his Will. Whether he was indeed a son of William the Immigrant
by a wife other than, and prior to, Ann White, or a nephew who grew close enough to Henry to call him brother, is a matter of some question.
Of the Edmond, who also arrived in 1638, b. in 1616 as he is noted as being age 22 at the time of the ship's sailing, it is generally thought that he died in passage or soon after arrival as he in not noted in any other records.
It is a surprise to see him listed as being at Sudbury - there is no further record of him or of a Kerley male other than those already mentioned. The ages of these last two men preclude either of them being the parent of either
Mary, Henry or the true William, Jr. - they would have been much to young to have fathered offspring.
Capt. Henry, b. 1632, m.( 2) - Elizabeth Ward Howe. She was the widow of John Howe, Jr, who was killed in the Massacre at Marlborough in 1677. She and Henry married that same year at Charlestown and later resided in Marlborough, where they had their 2 daughters, Hannah and Mercy, and at least 1 son, William. (Both Capt. Henry and Elizabeth Ward were children of fathers named William.)
Of the Kerly/Kerley/Carley descendants, only the two Henry's, Capt. and Jr., were only Henrys married to an Elizabeth having children in the 1680's, Henry, Jr b. 1657 having married an Elizabeth Unknown, also had a son John, b
about the same time as this Joseph born in Boston. So the question still hangs - was Joseph a son of the Captain or the Jr.?
I hope this makes sense and thanks for your thoughts and interest -
Janice's reply --
Good research and saving yours to be sure, and thanks very much
Janice
Kerley / Looking for lost cousin's 1974

I am looking for my cousins who mother divoice my uncle Bruce "Beau" Kerley. I do not know much on them, except that their is three boys, their mothers name is Kathy (or Catherine) She was married to my uncle abt. 1973-1976. They married in Marietta, Ga. I think. Their children names are, Cotton, Bruce Jr., and I think Kathy preagant when she left uncle "Beau", and had the baby after divoicing him. I was told they moved to Fla. and she remarried and her new husband adopted the children. I don't know how he could adopted them, when uncle Bruce would not a sign the adoption paper. So she must of waited until he past away, if her new husband did adopte my cousins. My grandmother Barbara who was married to James L. Kerley, Jr., looked for my cousin's until her death. I have taken up the search. She had told me that the last place she heard of them being was in Fla.. Please if anyone out their, if you know anyone of the people that has been mention, please tell me. I can be contacted at:
j.stone2@worldnet.att.net
Please anyone, if you have any information, and you don't want to tell me, please tell them we are looking for them.
