My Great Grandfather was Marion Gross who married Georgie Clara Jackson Gross. I have a picture of most of their family if you'd like. My Grandfather, Lafayette Wilson Gross later known as Floyd Alexander Gross (Born 18 Dec, 1890) was not in the picture, nor was his brother Luther Warren Gross, later known as Warren Luther Gross. Their younger brother, Russell is in the picture, who was killed in WWI, so this picture, I believe, was taken around 1907 in Little Birch, West Virginia after the older sons had married and/or left home.

The children of Marion and Clara were:
Luther Warren (Warren Luther) Gross (Married Lucy Gauldin in Dayton, OH)
Lafayette Wilson (Floyd Alexander) Gross (Married Mary Emma Edwards Feb 15, 1916(?) in Pittsburgh, probably)
Mae Gross (Married name Hamrick)
Olive Gross (Married name Halstead)
Gurnie Gross (Married name Hoover)
Wilma Gross (Marred name Darett)
Nora Bae Gross (Married name Pierce)
Russell Gross (Single, killed in WWI)
Boyd died in infancy
Another boy died in infancy

According to a letter I have from Gurnee regarding her mother (Georgie) Clara Jackson’s side:
Clara’s father was David Jackson, married ”Silvina” but I’ve also seen it spelled “Savina”
Their children were:
Sally
Abigail
Bietie(sp?)
Grace
Edna
Violet
Triplets named Alice, Allie, and ????? (perhaps a boy)
Clara (aka Georgie?)

I’m not sure how accurate the letter information is as Gurnee wrote it when she was 96, in 1998, and her handwriting was pretty poor, and I’m not sure about her memory at that time.

Clara Jackson Gross died in Clarksburg in 1966 and is also in Greenalwn Cemetery, I believe.

I hope this helps,
-Tom Gross

I'm pulling all the information together for you (and me). It may take a week or so. Based on that 1880 census, and based on Martha's age (36), being 18 years younger than Peter, it appears they had (or he adopted) the last four (much younger) children, and after West Virginia was declared a seperate state. I can only fill you in on Marion Gross's family, but it's interesting as two of his sons changed their names in WWI to avoid the draft, and one (my grandfather) chaged his name from "Lafayette Wilson Gross" to "Floyd Alexander Gross," using the name of his favorite uncle as his middle name. More on Marion's family later.

Peter Gross Jr. was a son of Abraham Gross. Peter Sr. was an uncle of Peter Jr. Sophia Kerns and Peter Gross Jr. had only four children that I can find information on. I believe the other four children of Peter Jr. may have been from a second marriage to Martha V. ___. Not absolutely certain. Can you help me fill in the blanks on his eight children?

Marion Gross was my great grandfather. He was one of eight children of Peter and Sophia. I have a lot of information about Marion's family and pedigree chart. I have been trying to confirm that Peter is actually Peter Jr born 1826+-1 yr, son of Peter Sr., also of Morgan county, born 1788.
Perhaps we can help each other with lots of information!
-Tom Gross

Both families ended up in MO and are buried in the Kern-Freeman Cem.
Any confirmed information on lineage both forwards and backwards would be of interest. Thank you. Elsie

Oh, you're one of John's kids! I think the only one I ever met was Kim. I met him once, and your Dad maybe twice.
My Dad was Webb, who was not Bob's, but was adopted when he and Jeanne married. They had two more sons, Ken in 1950 and Kevin in 1952.
I was born in 1965 and my "little" brother Colin in 1969.

Some of the stories my Grandpa had about him and your Dad were great, especially during WWII.

Sean

Hi Sean!
Wow, that is so cool that you found my post! I met your grand-dad on several occasions, but we lived in NJ and NH when I was growing up, and he and his wife Jean lived in Ill.... the Kerns family wasn't all that close in my lifetime.
So, who was your dad? I remember meeting Kevin when I was a little girl.... I don't think I met any other cousins...
How old are you? I am 39, have three kids that would be your, um, third cousins or 2nd cousins once removed? I don't know the correct terminology, but they are 18, 13 and 10 (your grandfather was a few years older than my father, and I was born when my dad was 50).
My dad, John, died in 1987 when he was 66.
So, there are a few tidbits of info. We will have to collaborate and share information when we get the chance. Have a great weekend!

My Grandfather, Robert James Kerns, was born in Iowa in 1917, son of Albert Kerns and Laura Bertoncello. Since moving to Cincinnati in 1989, I noticed many Kerns here, and when I asked my grandfater about it, he said that the family had come from Ohio to Iowa, but didn't give me any more detail. So all these Kerns I'm running into are relatives to some degree.

Diana, I had a lot of info in my old computer before it crashed. I lost everything in it. I did run out my family trees, though, and then I have a lot of paperwork that I never put in the computer. Give me a couple of days and I'll see what I got in there. I think I have Dora and Charley's daughter's number somewhere. One of Charley's kid's died about 2 years ago, but I can't remember if he was Dora's or not. I'll have to check all that out. Why don't you email me at fbarib@sbcglobal. It would be easier to correspond that way. Also be easier if there is anything I need to scan for you. -- fran

Jacob KERNS b. 1756 d. 1864 E. Brandywine Twp, Chester County, PA

Jacob KERNS was a farmer in Brandywine Twp, Chester Co, PA until he died in 1864 at age 90. He owned two farms, one was 81 acres operated by his son Peter and the other was 105, which Jacob operated until 1846 when it was willed to his daughter Magdalena. Jacob had at least one other son, Suplee, who died 1841. I think their mother was Rachel b. 1753 d. 1824 as she is the oldest female KERNS buried at Hopewell Cemetery in E. Brandywine Twp. Magdalena married Capt Jacob Vance ca 1800 and had six children before her he died in 1815. Magdalena and her children lived on her father's farm until 1846, when she inherited it. The farm passed to her children, as per Jacob's will. I am looking for more information on this KERNS family and Magdalena (Kerns) VANCE. Please contact me if you follow this family.
