Hi Betty,
Thank you so much for your reply and your generous offer to share information. Unfortunately, the Samuel Kerr in your posting is not my Samuel Kerr. My Samuel Kerr was born between 1828-1833 in Scotland (very small chance Ireland) and immigrated to Quebec, Canada. In 1857 he married Margaret Jane McCook in Aylmer, Quebec and they settled several miles west of Aylmer in Eardley Township, Quebec. That farm remained in the family until the 1990's.
I have gone through the 1841 & 1851 cenuses that are on Ancestry for Scotland and have eliminated all the Samuels except for 2. They show up as boarders in 1851 in different locations in Scotland and I cannot find them in 1841.
Samuel's wife Margaret wrote home to Samuel's sister(s) and/or mother and continued to do so after his death in 1875. I was hoping that perhaps someone had a grandmother that recieved letters from a relative in Canada or that it jogged a memory of a family story of someone.
Thank you so much again. And if you have anymore suggestions I would love to hear them!
take care
Heather
Hi Heather,

There is a possibility that your Samuel KERR was the brother of my ancestor, Robert KERR. And their father, Patrick KERR, was born in Ireland. Researchers believe County Sligo, Ireland:

SAMUEL KERR
Born: 1830 Dec 12, , , Quebec, Canada 241,997
Marriage: Mary Ann PETE on 1854 Dec 25 in , Argenteuil, Quebec, Canada 192
Died: 1908 Jul 12, Newport Twp., Compton, Quebec, Canada 192
Buried: 1908, Island Brook, Compton, Quebec, Canada, Island Brook Cem. 4,192

PATRICK KERR
Born: 1797 Mar 7, , , , Ireland 241
Marriage: Eliza or Hannah Mrs Patrick KERR about 1817 in , , , Ireland 81,192
Died: 1868 Oct 7, Gore Twp., Argenteuil, Quebec, Canada 992
Buried: 1868 Oct 9, St-Jerome, Argenteuil, Quebec, Canada, Ch. of Eng. 992

Patrick and Elizabeth (KERR?) KERR were part of a family-group which left County Sligo, Ireland, in 1823. They were a mix of HENDERSON and KERR couples, plus a Miss KERR who married in Canada. Some couples had already had children, but most of their children were born in the Prov. of Quebec. They averaged 10 children each.

They were forced to settle in Argenteuil County which is on the northern shore of the St. Lawrence River. Some of the children, when married, moved to other Counties. My Robert and Elizabeth (HENDERSON) KERR married in Argenteuil Co. and had their 5 children there, but then moved to Compton County. They then came down to Massachusetts.

If you think this is your Samuel KERR's family, I can provide you with more information - from another's research.

Betty (near Lowell, MA, USA)

P.S. I just looked at the description of this Samuel KERR's family again, and it looks like he moved his family to Compton County, Prov. of Quebec, also, and remained there. So, comparing information, it looks like there were 2 Samuel KERR's in P.Q. born around the same time and living not too far from each other.

Kerr Letters home

Hi,
My ggg-grandfather Samuel Kerr was born between 1828-1833. We think he was born in Scotland; however 1 Canadian census lists his place of birth as Ireland (which is probably an error, but who knows). He immigrated to Quebec City, Quebec, Canada and then moved west, settling near Aylmer, Quebec (near Bytown -now Ottawa, Ontario). He married Margaret Jane McCook in 1857. Samuel was killed in 1875.
His wife Margaret would write home to Samuel's sister(s) and/or mother and continued to do so after his death.
Does this sound familiar to anyone? The signature of the writer would be Margaret Kerr.
Anyone have a missing Samuel in there tree?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
thank you
Heather

Re: I am wondering if Thomas Kerr Sr. b.1721 in Ireland might be my Ancester ?

Hi, there! I am Edwin Kerr, nephew of Paul Walker Kerr [my father, Francis Everett Kerr, was (uncle) Paul's brother.] My wife and I found the grave of Zachariah Kerr and his wife, Mary, this July (2009)in the (large !) KERR cemetery, just west of what used to be "Kerr's Corners", where Zachariah and Mary had their home (around +/- 1830-1850). "Kerr's Corners" is about 1.5 miles south of Niles, Ohio, where Salt Springs Road crosses Ohio Rte. 46 ... the cemetery sexton told me that their home had been on the northeast corner of that intersection. The cemetery is on the south side of Salt Springs Road, about a mile west of the intersection, and the grave (along with many others of the family) which is about 150 feet south, into the cemetery, on the east side of the main drive that enters under the large arch with KERR in large letters. Either Zachariah or his family donated the (+/- 10 acres) of land for the cemetery. My wife and I didn't have time to do more investigation of our Kerr ancestry at the time, but I do have some more information to investigate, if you are interested.
My e-mail is ekerr@adams.net
Mr address is Edwin Kerr, 110 E. Park St., Camp Point, Illinois 62320-1121
(Our son now lives at Aloha, OR, near where your father (my cousin Harlan) lived at Vancouver, WA. Where do you live?
Sincerely, Ed Kerr

KERR in Montgomery Co. IL

Dear Kerr descendants:

Historic McCord Cemetery Needs You

A cemetery exists because lives are worth remembering. It pays homage to the lives that have gone before us and honors our veterans. Sadly, the nearly 175-year-old McCord Cemetery in Irving Township of Montgomery County, Illinois has declined over the years (photos are available upon request). Weedy vegetation has climbed over toppled gravestones and brambles have intertwined with historic markers, including those of veterans from the Revolutionary War, War of 1812, Black Hawk War, and the Civil War. Many of the first settlers of the nearby community are interred here but the exact number may be lost to the ages. The sexton records and other records of the old McCord Cemetery Association cannot be found.

Families buried in McCord include: ALTEVOGHT, BOSTICK, CHAMBERS, COCKLERES, CLOTFELTER, DRYER, HAGOOD, HALLER, HANKS, HAYGOOD, HEIDERMAN, HOGSETT, HUGHES, JACKSON, KERR, KNIGHT, LINXWILER, LOHR, MCCORD, PADEN, PARRY, RICHARDSON, RUTLEDGE, SHORT, SMITH, SLAYBACK, SWING, TOMAMICHEL, WILLIAMS

McCord Cemetery needs your help now before it's too late. Perhaps you can come out for a cleanup day, or help map the cemetery or photograph cemetery markers. Are your skills and talents better suited for behind-the-scenes research? Perhaps you have access to local newspaper archives and can search for obituaries and death notices that mention burial in the cemetery. Or perhaps you have access to funeral notices, death registers, bible records, etc. that can be used in compiling a list of interments for those missing cemetery markers or unmarked graves. Please contact Joyce Williams aurien1@aol.com to volunteer. For those of you who are local, there is an organizational meeting planned for November 7 in Irving if you're able to attend.

How else can you help? Share this announcement with your fellow researchers. Post it on appropriate blogs and forums. And if you have family members buried at McCord or have photos of cemetery markers, contact Jeanne Johnson at jj@tampabay.rr.com

The Cemetery committee "Restore McCord" welcomes monetary donations. Much of the work will be provided freely by volunteers, but equipment, supplies, and some specialized services (such as restoring markers and searching for buried stones and interments) may need to be purchased. We could use someone experienced in historic grant applications also. Our recently-formed group will coordinate the much needed preservation, restoration, and maintenance efforts to McCord under the auspices of the award-winning Irving Area Historical Museum http://www.irvingmuseum.org/ The Museum, established in 1999, is a volunteer not-for-profit organization dedicated to preserving local history. Its members' dedicated efforts have been formally recognized by the 2002 Governor's Home Town Award and two Studs Terkel Humanities Service Awards. The Museum has set up a separate checking account for donations. If you'd like to help with the finances of this endeavor, please contact the museum at irvingmuseum@consolidated.net

We hope that you'll join us in the effort to protect this cemetery from extinction. Interment and inscription information from this effort will be distributed freely and we want to ensure continued maintenance of the cemetery grounds after restoration. Your help towards these worthwhile goals would be greatly appreciated. J. Johnson

FAQ
Where exactly is the McCord Cemetery located?
The cemetery is located in Irving Township of Montgomery County between Hillsboro & Irving communities on McCord's Trail. Other nearby communities are Taylor Springs, Butler, and Schram City.
Coordinates of the McCord Cemetery are: Latitude 39.1892139 Longitude -89.444809

What size is the McCord Cemetery?
It is approximately two acres.

Who do I contact to volunteer or for more information?
Joyce Williams aurien1@aol.com
Hi Linda. My KERR's were part of a family-group, including HENDERSON's, arriving 1820's in the Prov. of Quebec - from Ireland. My Robert KERR and Elizabeth HENDERSON were born in Argenteuil Co. in 1827, and married there. Probably 1870's, they moved down to Compton Co. There were other KERR families there when they arrived. No one has been able to find out if they were somehow related. There are researchers studying the KERR's already living in Compton Co., P.Q.

Betty (near Lowell, MA, USA)

(Oldest son, William KERR, came down to Boston, MA, ~1874, and one sister came down to join him. They both married here. Then the parents and 2 younger brothers joined them. We can't find one daughter. The brothers married here but shortly after moved to Washington State.)

Re: William and Robert Kerr - Brothers to North America 1850s

Hi,

Robert, William, and James - could indeed be a connection. I have heard a lot, but do know our family spent some limited time in Northern Ireland.

I know that William claims to have arrived in the US in 1834 at the age of 10 (census). I have never found proof on a ship's manifest. William married Eliza Robinson at the Cherry St. Mariner's Chapel (I have certificate) in 1850.

William had a brother Robert who came over ?????. He was a mariner - settled at sometime along the canal in NY State. Robert married a Martha Robinson. She was born in Ireland according to the census. William's wife Eliza was born in NY. Could be sisters - don't know. Both of these brothers were in Cleveland, Ohio in 1860. Robert owned in his life at least two boats which he sailed on Lake Erie. Info on him by typing his name in google.

William had a large family (10) and my grandfather was the youngest - George Peyton Kerr.

A sister, Margarett or Margareth came to America much later. She married Francis Douglass in 1862 or 72. I have record buried in my papers. They had two children Agnes and John. I remember Agnes. She told my aunt that another brother had gone to California and at least one to Australia, but she had no luck locating them. Unfortunately, I don't have names, or names of parents. Supposedly, the parents of William, Robert, and Margareth
were born in Scotland. The father was a carpenter by trade and my cousin has a tool - but it is unclear whom it belonged to.

That is the info I have. I can't get any further back than that. Trouble is the birthdates don't match up. William in my family is about 1824 and Robert 1828. Wish indeed that we could connect. Sister's name even matches. Jeanne

Re: Elias Kerr born abt 1776

The Elijah Kerr, who is my ggggrandfather, was the son of Elias Kerr and Elsabeth McNulty. Elijah was born 4 Nov 1789 in Pennsylvania and died 6 Oct 1872 in Elizabeth Twp, Allegheny, Pennsylvania. He was buried in Round Hill Cemetery,Elizabeth Twp, Allegheny, Pennsylvania.

ELijah was married 2-3 times. I have children Nancy, Hannah, Elener, Elias, Samuel H (my gggrandfather) Rebecca, and Susan, but not sure who their mother(s) were.

My uncle found census records for Elija from 1820 on in Elizabeth Twp. And found his grave in Round Hill Cemetary. My uncle's notes say that his name was spelled Elija, Lije, Eliga and Elisha in different documents.

I have notes that a will of Elias Kerr ( 15 Jan 1776 NJ - 17 Jan 1832 Elizabeth TWP) was found in Allegheny COunty and follows:
ames Nicol states that Elias Kerr died on the 17th day of January AD 1832, that he (Nicols) was at the house of the deceased during his last illness on Friday the 13th and Saturday the 14th of the same month; that on both these occasions the deceased declared to him that it was his desire that his wife and eldest son should have full possession of all his real and personal property, after the payment of his debts during this life time of his wife - that all the family should live together as usual - and that after his wifes death, if settlement could not be made amicable with the eldest son, the property must be put to sale and the proceeds equally divided among the children. And said Nichols further says, that he understood the deceased as calling upon him to be a witness that the above was the disposition which the deceased wished to be made of his estate after his decease. The deceased was at the time of making the above declarations of sound and disposing mind, memory a!
nd understanding.
W. M. Drennen also declares, that he Elias Kerr died on the 17th of January AD 1832 - that he (Drennen) was at the house of the deceased during his last illness, about the 10th of January 1832 - that the deceased declared to him on that occasion that he wished after his death, that his wife and eldest son should have possession of all his real and personal property, after the payment of his debts - to have the use of it during the live time of his wife - that the family should all live together as usual - and that after his wifes death, the property should be sold, if it could not be settled otherwise with the eldest son and the proceeds divided among the children equally. From the manner and declarations of the deceased he understood him as calling upon him (Drennen) to witness that the foregoing was the disposition which the deceased wished to be made of his estate after his death. The deceased was at the time of making the above declarations of sounds and disposing mind, memory, and understanding.
The foregoing statement reduced to writing in our presence and at our request this 24th day of January AD 1832. Witness our hands

James Nichols
Wm M. Drennen

Allegheny County,
Be it remembered that on the 24th day of January Ad 1832 a citation under the hand of John M. Snowden. Register joining and for said County and the seal of the Registers office was issued by the said register directed to Elizabeth Kerr, widow of the above named Elias Kerr and John Hanna, Barbara, Mary and Nancy Kerr children of the said deceased, requiring them to appear before the said Register at his office in Pittsburgh on Wednesday the 8th day of February 1832, to contest if they think proper the above ____________will, and to be present at the probate thereof, and be it further remembered that on the said 8th day of February AD 1832, Wm. M. Drennen was duly and solemnly sworn by the said Register at his said office, that he served the said citation on all the parties therein named, on the 25th day of January AD 1832 by reading it to them, and showing them the seal of the Registers office thereto attached; and be it further remembered that on the said 8th day of February!
AD 1832, none of the previous named in the said citation appearing at the said registers office, the said Register proceeded to take the probate of the foregoing ____________will, whereupon James Nicholls and Wm. W. Drennen the witness thereto were severally and solemnly sworn and did declare that the facts stated in the foregoing __________ will as reduced to writing in their presence and at their request on the 26th day of January AD 1832, and signed by them is just and true. Given under my hand this 8th February AD 1832.

I have been unable to find the parents of either Elias Kerr or Elisabeth McNulty.

My Elijah was born 1813-1815 and is buried in Woodlawn Cemetery Brown County Kansas. He married Phoebe Wells in 1835 in Richland County Ohio. They had 3 daughters. Phoebe died apparently in Indiana and Elijah is then found in 1850 in Dane County Wisconsin per census info. In that census he is living with the daughters and Elizabeth (his mother?) and Hannah (sister?) He is then found in Fayette County Iowa in 1856 (state census), and again in 1860 census. He married Sovina Martin Houpt and they then migrated to Kansas.
I had also seen the will you have. I was always surprised it mentioned the older son John and several of the girls but Elijah was not mentioned.???

She married William Logan of Belfast by 1880, where they had their 1st 2 children before moving to Baltimore, co.
Hi,
I am looking for information on my gg grandfather John Kerr who was a station agent/CNR lineman. His marriage license states that he was from Dalhousie b in 1864. He married Margaret McRae or McCrae. They had 5 children William Donald, Howard Edward, Earnest Leslie, Gertrude Emily, and Harriet Margaret. It was rumored that he left our family and headed west (possibly British Columbia) around 1893 before his last daughter was born. He may have remarried. I am trying to find out who his parents were-We think it may have been George & Catherine Kerr of Dalhousie. If any has a John Kerr or George & Catherine Kerr and thinks it could be a match please email me at amymallon@verizon.net
Thanks

I am seeking information about the parents and/or siblings of William Franklin Clay, who married Josie Cumi Kerr. They raised their family mostly in Cleburne County, AL, but Frank died in Haralson County, GA, according to his daughter. I can find them on the census from 1900 to 1930, but have been unable to find Frank before 1900. Josie died following childbirth in 1922, and I believe Frank died in 1932. Any information about the names of parents and siblings of Frank Clay will be appreciated.

I am looking for two brothers Robert Kerr and William Kerr who are said by family members to have migrated to North America around the 1850s and another brother, James, migrated to Australia.

Their parents were Henry Kerr and Margaret Paterson. William and Robert were born at Easter Leadburn, Peebles-shire, near Edinburgh in about 1832 and 1843 respectively.

I would be interested to track down these two.

Please let me know if you feel they could be your connections.

Bruce

Hi
From my lot, in the 1841 Scotland Census William was still at home south of Edinburgh - aged about 9. I have his baptism record - born 1832.

Robert who was born in 1843 was in the 1851 Census at home south of Edinburgh - aged 7. William had left home (at least for census night!)

So, it seems unlikely these are the same William and Robert that you have. Pity ... I woudl have liked to find these two,

Bruce
