Elijah Kersey

I am trying to find anything on Elijah Kersey, my great great grandfather. I have found him in 1870 GA Appling Co. Census living with him is Nancy Raulins (could be Roland) and Margaret (Ancestry has her as Raulins). Margaret is my great grandmother. My grandmother said her mom was a Margaret (Peggy) Kersey.

Then I have him in 1880 GA Appling Co. Census living with Elizabeth Bohannan or Bohannon with Peggy (my Margaret), Jesse, Viny, Johua (?), Elijah and Wright. I know some of the children listed with Elizabeth and Elijah went by the Kersey and some Bohannan/Bohannon. Is anybody out there related to any of these listed? Please any help is appreciated, Elijah is my brickwall.

Margaret married John E. Dyal/Dyall.

Any help contact me at pdmannin@bellsouth.net

Thanks Phyllis

Sorry about that but all that I have starting with John Kersey is that he married a Elizabeth Bale in Green County, Ky 1808. They got divorced in 1836. I have no births info for him nor death info. There is a some 7 year disappearance for John; hence the reason for the divorce.

I actually doubt there's any connection for my family of Kerseys, there are a good bit of Kerseys in Cornwall and I suspect that's where my trail of them will lead. But we have a stopping block in the US end of things, William Kersey (and possibly a brother James) born in Kentucky in the 1820s but all we can find of them is them living with a J & S Kessy in a census for Russell Co, VA. Evidently Russell Co. got shifted from one state to another as boundaries were drawn and the trail gets cold there, it's very frustrating.
But the village of Kersey is picturesque and for those who can link back to it, has some great souvenirs on offer. My gran and sister (who is named Kersey for our family surname) really enjoyed the tea towels with Kersey on them as well.

I have a lot of Kersey genealogy. I have visited the village of Kersey and sat on the bench under the Kersey signpost near the Church. It is, indeed, a beautiful village with the water splash.
I havn't actually found any of our ancestors in the village as yet, but I expect somewhere along the line we will. My grandfather's name is William Henry Kersey b. 1869 in Rugby.

Looking for any descendants of Harold KERSEY and Mary Ellen GRIGGS. Mary Ellen was born in Missouri in 1916 and she and Harold are buried in Artesia, New Mexico, where they lived for a few years in the late 1960s / early 1970s. They had two known daughters: Kathryn Griggs and Marie Elizabeth. It's suspected that these two daughters remained around Adair County, Missouri where they married and had families, but I can't find any details.

A cousin is trying to arrange a family reunion in Missouri, so would like to connect with anyone who is part of this family.

If it is easier this is my email address which I check about twice a week: solarflare_317@hotmail.com
Also if you would like information on the family she married into it will be my pleasure to send you some.

Re: Nancy Irene Kersey of High Point, NC

Nancy Irene Kersey was the daughter of Charles Arthur Kersey and Lula Jordan, and had several brothers and siters. One of her brothers, Frank, is still alive and lives on Kersey Valley Rd. in High Point. Charles was the brother of my great-grandfather John Cicero Kersey. I was born and raised in High Point, however I have not met many of my Kersey relatives outside of my immediate cousins. My line is as follows:

John Kersey, Sr. - John Kersey, Jr. - William Kersey - Eleazar Kersey - Moses Kersey - John Parker Kersey - John Cicero Kersey - John Henry Kersey - Joseph Darrell Kersey - Farrell Kersey (me)

I don't have any info on Nancy Irene, but I have access to some Guilford Co. records (although I no longer live in High Point). If there is any other info you would like to have, let me know and I'll try to get it.

Regards,
Farrell Kersey

Dear Tara (and others interested)

I also came across similar info which said that John Kersey (the elder) was from Ayrshire, Scotland and moved to England at some point. I recently found a painting of him online which states he was baptised near Oxford, so I'm not certain where the Scotland reference comes from. This is also true of his son, John the younger. Since this post is several years old, I assume that most Kersey researchers know by now that John the elder was a mathematician in the Oxford area and contributed many new ideas to the field of algebra (I even read somewhere that he is credited with changing the equals symbol from being vertical to horizontal). I believe he died around 1690, and his son John, Jr., the noted lexicographer, moved to Pennsylvania. Based on dates I have previously seen, I am curious as to whether or not there was a John III, which would make the dates I currently have more feasible. I am a direct descendant of John Kersey, Sr. (7th or 8th great-grandson).

If anyone has questions or input, please feel free to reply.

-Farrell Kersey

I don't have any info about Kerseys that are from Kentucky, but several Kerseys that migrated to or were born in North Carolina moved to Indiana around the early 1800's. It's possible that these Kerseys are related to Kerseys from Kentucky.

I noticed your name is Dale Kersey. Are you the same Dale that owns the razor hone brought to America by John Kersey, Jr.?

Hi! Thanks for responding about Wright Kersey. If your ancestor was Wright's brother, you are the first we have been able to find in his lineage. There are a bunch of us online looking for this information and haven't ever found a true link to our Wright. All the researchers I've talked to only have theories that Wright's brothers were Richard G., Thomas or Elijah. No one has mentioned an Alfred L. Kersey. Can you send me more information on his line?

Wright was my G-G-Grandfather. His son General Morgan was my G-Grandfather, his son General Lee my grandfather and my father was Robert Cecil Kersey. I will share any and all info I have on these downline kin with you.

Please either post it here or email me directly at graphicvkd@gmail.com.
Ulysses S. Kersey Jr. "Buck" 1906-959/60

Oh the ballad of Ulysses Samuel Kersey Jr, "Buck"
His father was Ulsses Samuel Kersey Sr, "Lit" and his mother was Ella Mae Minnie Gnann. His life dates are roughly 1906/07-1959/60.
His first wife was Nettie Searcy and they had Elloise and Horace. I believe the first marriage was in 1924/25 and lasted until 1944. From there Buck and Nettie divorced and remarried and divorced and remarried SEVERAL times through 1949 - about once or twice a year. Buck married a Vallie Mae Zetrouer sometime in this love triangle and divorced her too. It is unclear to me whether he ended up with Nettie or Vallie.
I have reason to believe he died in Colquitt County, Georgia Dec 2 1960 but have not solid proof it is him. He seemed to live his whole life in FL I do not know how/why he ended up in GA.
He is kin to me and I would really like to know why he married/remarried the same two people over and over again.
Please post and contact me!
-Reggie Kersey

Mary A. Elizabeth Scarborough: The Kersey Line

Mary A. Elizabeth Scarborough, daughter of William Perrien Scarborough and Penelope Fordham, is NOT the wife of William John Kersey.

There is a Mary A. Elizabeth Scarborough who is born around the same time from Laurens County, Ga. This Mary's parents are William Perrien Scarborough and Penelope Fordham. In reality, She marries a John Calvin Register. This Mary has been improperly cited as THE Mary that is wed to William John Kersey, but this is incorrect. I have this Mary in my tree on ancestry.com (“Kersey Family Tree: FL, GA and Beyond”) so you can follow her through time and see that she is in no way able to be the Mary wed to William John.

Mary A. Elizabeth Scarborough: B. Nov 24, 1837 D. Feb 5, 1911.

Residence:
1850	Laurens Cnty, Ga w/parents William Perrien Scarborough & Penelope Fordham
1855	Georgia Marriages 1699-1944: John Calvin Register May 3, 1855
1860	Laurens Cnty, Ga w/John C. Register
1870	Militia District #29, Laurens Cnty, Ga w/John Register
1880	Burgamies, Laurens Cnty, Ga w/John C. Register
1900	Burgamies, Laurens Cnty, Ga w/Jno C. Register
1910	Burgamies, Laurens Cnty, Ga as Mary E., widowed
1911	Dead, buried at Besthsiada Cemetary, Laurens Cnty, GA

There WAS a Mary wed to William John. Not sure her maiden name was Scarborough.
I have 4 of her children's death certificates and only one of them mentions their mother's maiden name, but it says "Scarborough" in the space where she was born, not in the space for maiden name. "Kersey" is listed as maiden name..., which is the married name.

There are a lot of Mary Scarborough's out there born around the same time in GA, so we just have to find the right one! Please help me by correcting this in your family tree and sharing with any others you know researching the GA/FL Kersey line. The Mary A. Elizabeth with the parents of William Perrien and Penelope is cited a lot out there on the web and in family trees. We must correct this for our sake, for history’s sake, and most importantly for accuracy.

I have also found out that the Emanuel County, GA courthouse has suffered many fires over the years: 1841, 1855, 1857, 1919, and 1938. This means all of their documents were destroyed. This is sad news because I believe that William John Kersey and his Mary were wed in Emanuel County around the 1855-1860 time period and perhaps their marriage records were lost.

Sorry so long, but I wanted to share what I have found.
Hello Family!

William John Kersey is also my GGG grandfather.
James Downing Kersey is my GG grandfather.
Joseph Carlston Kersey is my G grandfater.
Jesse Joseph Kersey is my grandfather.

Does anyone know when/why William died? I have him on census in 1870 in Ga and he is not there in 1880 in FL. I Have also seen in other people's family trees where they have him remarrying after 1850 but I don't believe this to be true. I think they are thrown off by the Mary/Polly Kersey name switch (below).

It has been years since your posts so I hope you are still members. I have just started my research in Jan 2008. I would love to share/gather our information and any old pictures. I have many wedding certificates and some death certificates and many pictures of tombstones.

P.S.
I always wondered why Mary gave her name as "Polly" on the 1880 Middleburg, CLay County, FL census. I had heard it was a nickname for Mary but if it's her middle name that makes more sense. Every census I have seen she is "Mary" except for the 1880. I think William must have died around then and they were hiding from collectors. Everyone in the family went by their middle name or a nickname on that census.

Have you tried Boyds Marriage Indexes. My husband's name is William Trefor Kersey and I know that there are some entries of marriages of Kerseys in Boyds. Good luck.
