Re: Descendents of Joh. Henry KERST, of Germany to PA in 1705

To JAXON and Ken:
Your inquiries got me looking. I found a JAMES KERST age 33 in 1860 Census in Oley. I have attached the census page for him for you to upload. On the same page and in the next household is Charles KERST, same age, and both of them are day laborers, and both married to Catharines. James has 4 children: Franklin, age 10, James age 5, Albert age 3, and Elmira age 1, all born in PA.

Charles KERST has a son William age 7, and a Mary KERST who is 58 and old enough to be the mother, and must be a widow, is in his h/h.

In the 1870 Census, Mary is still with Charles in Oley, Berks Co, but has a last name of SCHOLL, so it is possible she remarried after 1860 and her second husband died before 1870. The 3 of them are still in Oley in 1880, but I could not find them in 1900 Census, so they may have died.
I did find a marriage at Trinity Reformed Church, Pottstown for Charles KERST to Catharine HASSLER on 7/21/1852. This works with son William born in 1853, age 7 in 1860 Census. Pottstown is about 20 minutes or less from Oley in Berks Co.

In 1870 James is in Warren Co IN with Catharine and 2 more children - Hannah age 10 born in PA, and Henry W b 11/1869 in IND. JAXON, I feel sure this is your couple. (I have attached that census, too. Since you have their death dates, maybe you can get an obituary from the IN newspaper in 1903 which might show his parents, etc. What cemetery are they buried in?

I can't figure out why they don't appear in the 1850 Census anywhwere in PA. I couldn't find a Mary KERST b c1802 either. Since Charles married after the 1850 census, you'd tthink he would show up......

I still cannot connect him to the other KERSTs that I have in Berks Co, and that surname is not a popular one at that time either!
Diana in AL

Let me know if I can help any further with PA records.

Diana in Pelham AL
audianaq@msn.com

We have to be methodical in figuring them out.
Estate papers show only 5 surviving children: James Kerst, Hannah Kerst, Emma Kerst, John Kerst and Cherrington Kerst.

I just found a baptism at St Gabriel's by Rev. Leaf:
Handwritten entries of baptisms performed there by Rev. I wonder if he could be a son of John C born 1835. He didn't marry until 3/1861, but maybe Harrison is his, before marriage?

1840 Census, Union Twp., Berks Co PA
Harrison Kerst, 2 males under 5, 1 male 20-30, 1 male 60-70;
1 fem under 5, 1 fem 5-10, 1 fem 10-15, 1 fem 20-30.
The older male is probably his father John G - who was a widower in 1840. His wife had died in 1830 - buried in St Gabriel's cemetery.

In 1850 Census there are the same 5 living with Matilda in Union Twp as in the estate papers:

Census 1850, Union Twp, Birdsboro PO
Matilda KERST, age 36, PA
John age 14 - attending school, PA
James age 12 - attending school, PA
Hannah age 9 - attending school, PA
Emma age 5, PA
Cherrington age 1, PA

IN 1860 Census, some are living with the UMSTEADS, and from their assets, they had received inheritances:

In 1860 Census, Union Twp,. residing in h/h of Herman UMSTEAD:
John KERST age 23 boatman assets of $1000
James KERST age 21 carpenter assets of $1000
Emma age 13 PA assets of $700
Harrison age 10, PA assets of $6500 (This is prob son Cherington KERST mentioned in estate papers.)

1860 Census in Amity
Hannah KERST age 18 living with Rev.
I found the Texas death certificate for Harrison C. Kerst. His parents are listed as unknown. It lists his birthdate as March 18, 1849 in Pottstown, Pennsylvania. While this is in Montgomery County now, it is only about 15 miles outside of Reading. I wonder how he connects if not the same Harrison Kerst?

I'm going to have to investigate further to see which of us has the correct Harrison C. Kerst, because of course they can't easily be in two places at the same time with different families. I thought I had followed his trail to Texas. And that the 1849 birthdate was consistent with what was found on the 1860 census. However, maybe you have some information that does prove that you have the correct Harrison C. Kerst and that it was actually Harrison E. Kerst? I know that the apple usually doesn't fall far from the tree, but I thought I had discovered him going west, as follows:

1. HARRISON CHERINGTON3 KERST (HARRISON2, JOHANNES GULTIN1 GERST) was born March 1849 in Pennsylvania, and died December 30, 1913 in Galveston, Texas1. He married ELEANORE Bet. 1883 - 1884.
I have more info on John C KERST and Catharine TURNER.

There is a BIO about her father Peter TURNER in History of Berks Co, M Montgomery, p 1272:

"Peter Turner was born April 10, 1800, near Hopewell Furnace, in Union township, Berks county. He was left an orphan when only a year old, and brought up by his mother's parents and his uncle, Absalom Lord. When quite young, he was apprenticed to a Mr. Jones, in Douglassville, to learn the wheelwright's trade, and he continued with Mr. Jones until he attained his majority: then he started in business on his own account and carried it on quite successfully for about thirty years, employing several men and giving them steady work. The demand for heavy wagons, such as he built and repaired, gradually decreased in that section of the country along the Schuylkill Valley after the railroad had begun to transport all kinds of merchandise, and he having combined farming with wheelwrighting he discontinued his trade about 1850 and devoted his time entirely to farming until 1865. He had served as a school director of the township for a number of years, and at the time of his death was a vestryman of St. Gabriel's Episcopal Church. For many years he was recognized as one of the most active members of the congregation, and it was principally through his efforts that a parsonage was erected in 1858. He was twice married, first to Margaret Ludwig, youngest daughter of John and Rachel (Morris) Ludwig, of Cumru township. She died in May, 1841, the mother of the following children: Louisa m. John Kohler; Catharine m. John C. Kerst; Caroline m. Henry Bush (she died in 1901); Emeline died in 1837; Lewis died in 1908; Rachel and Ellen reside at Douglasville; Cyrus L. resides at Allentown. In December, 1842, Peter Turner married Mrs. Sarah Donnelly, widow of George Donnelly, of West Chester, and second daughter of Joseph and Elizabeth Russell. By this marriage there were four children: Elizabeth died in childhood; Amos is mentioned above; Newton Russell is mentioned above; Annie m. H. Hallman, of Pottstown.
I wish I could help you. The earliest James I have was born in 1837 and stayed in PA.

Most of the earlier KERST in my lines were Johns and Henry's.

I will do some checking to see if I can find anything. There were some later emigrant KERSTs/KIRSTs who were in Philadelphia.
I have not been able to connect those to any of mine since my emigrant wss in early 1700s.

Diana in AL

I'm not sure if we're related or not but my great-great grandfather James Wallace Kerst(1854-1930) was born in Pennsylvania, he was married to Unity M. Bolty (1867-1927) they are both buried in Indiana. I believe he relocated to Indiana when he was in his mid-twenties and lived with a family, he was a hired hand for them. Both of James' parents were also born in Pennsylvania. I am not exactly sure what their names were, but there was another couple buried in the same cemetery as James and Unity and their names are James G. Kerst (June 25, 1827-November 30, 1903) and Cathrene Kerst (July 14, 1830-March 28, 1912), I believe they may be his parents, but i'm not certain. James and Unity had my great grandather James Earl Kerst on March 23, 1891-June 28, 1972, James Earl Kerst had my grandfather Robert Lewis Kerst on February 5, 1921-March 20, 1978, and my father is Robert Earl Kerst June 3, 1947. If any of this looks or sounds familiar to you please let me know, i'm trying to fill in the gaps myself.

I am studying this descendant line as part of my study of Cherington descendants. I would be interested to know if anyone else has researched these descendant lines, and would be very interested to hear from a descendant on this line.

1. Jacob married Ester Bertolet(1779-1846). They had 9 children. What I have been trying to learn is where Johann Jacob Karst/Kerst came from. We know he arrived in Philadelphia on the brigantine Pennsylvania Merchant in September 1733, from Rotterdam, Holland. We believe he came from the Palatine region of Germany.

Hello,

I've been working on our family ancestry. I've been able to get back to a Johann Jacob Karst, who arrived in Philadelphia, PA on Sept. 18, 1733 on the brigantine, Pennsylvania Merchant. I believe the name then changed to "Kerst" and they settled in the Pennsylvania Dutch area. I believe Johann Jacob Karst came from the Paletine region of Germany. Any information on his parents or where exactly they came form would be helpful. Thank you.

Re: Johann Kerst

Randy
I found this on a CD at the LDS entitled 'William Penn and the Dutch Quaker Migration to PA, App C:Dutch and German Settlers in Germantown, 1683-1709':
Johan Heinrich Carstens (John Henry KERSTEN) p 414
p 421 ...fifty seven new names were added in the latter year (1709) naturalized, as follows: ...John Henry Kersten(Carstens)...
source: Colonial records of Pennsylvania, Vol 2, pp493-4. This implies that our KERSTEN was in the country before 1709. This list included 62 settlers in Germantown who were naturalized in 1691. Twenty six survived to be re-naturalized in 1709 under an Act of Assembly and 57 new names were added of which our John Henry KERSTEN was one.

Further on this CD on page 429, it lists in App I, the names of the first settlers in Germantown and vicinity and on page 431 is Johan Heinrich Carstens, naturalized in 1709. Unfortunately it does not show where in the vicinity he settled! But this does seem to confirm the entry in Philip Pendleton's book on Oley Valley, that John Henry Kersten first had land in 1714 in Oley and John KERSTEN first owned land in 1734 in Oley.

I checked the ITSG for ships lists for surname CARSTENS, but there was nothing for early 1700 on any of their volumes.
So, what next? I think we could search for early land records info from Philadelphia Co. I think that was the mother county back in 1709-1714. Berks and Lancaster weren't formed then. I'm not even sure about Chester Co that early! But maybe somewhere there are early Penn land indentures or quit-rents or something with his name on them! Somehow we need to find them!
Let me know what you think! I am exxcited to have found this documentation.

HI Randy
Can you tell me the children of your John JAcob KARST and his spouse. The KERST I can prove is Johann KERST who was married to Eva Rosina RITTER(died bef 1/1783) and lived in Berks Co PA. They had 5 children: Johann Henrich(Henry) b abt 1728-1788, George(1735-1807), Juliana(3/2/1734-?, Mary and Frantz(1737-1763). Henry settled in Oley and George in Union Twp. Henry married Appolonia GERIG/GERICK and George married Elizabeth GELBACH. I descend from George and Elizabeth. Julianna married Christian MERCKEL and Mary married a HUFF. Franz died without issue.
Is this your line?

Hi Randy!
Can you please give me your e-mail address. I'd like to get with you about Johann. Which line of KERST's are you in? I have quite an extensive collection of KERSTs and there are 5 KERST cousins that I am in contact with! Maybe we can work on their origins together.
write me at audiana@webtv.net. I am going to my local Family History Center today and will try to find more on them. Get Phillip Pendleton's book "Oley Valley Heritage: Colonial Years 1700-1775". He has Johannes KERST(KERSTEN) in Oley valley as early as 1714 supposedly based on land records, tax records etc.; Johann Heinrich KERSTEN(KERST) as early as 1734. Do you have any early records for them? Pendleton says they were from PAlantine and some were Swiss or French derivation and came into the area as early as 1712. There were names such as Bertolet, Levan, DeTurck, Joder, Keim, Hoch, Ritter Kauffman, etc. Some settled along Monocacy Creek below Oley Valley proper. Didn't later Kersts have a grist mill on the water around there or Birdsboro?

Lot to exchange. Write me soon!
Diana

Re: Kerst in Minnesota

The Kerst family you are related to, came from Murringen, near Bullingen, in PR. This area since the end of World War I, is now part of the Province of Liege, in Belgium.

The Catholic Church records of this town can be viewed on the LDS microfilm collection, and the family can be traced back to the early 1700's.

My husband's line comes from this area, and I have compiled a descending genealogy of his various lines, including the line that merges into yours. I would be interested in sharing this data with you, but would also like if you would share what data you have found.

Are you so interested in sharing information, or would you prefer to do the original research on your own?

There were different branches of the family that came to the US and settled in MN after 1852. One branch settled in St. Paul; another, came to Vermillion, Dakota Co., MN; another, was in St. Paul, but then went to Duluth, St.Louis Co., MN. I have data on all of these lines, but some are very much incomplete.

Looking forward to hearing from you.
Cathy Girgen

Magdalena ARTH married Michael KERST on January 30, 1868 in Assumption Parish, St. Paul, Minnesota. My great grandmother married Michael and Magdalena s grandson Michael KERST III. This was my great grandmother s second marriage; however, he was the only real father my grandmother had and they were quite close. I am trying very hard to locate any of this Minnesota KERST family. I know some moved to Chicago and others to Washington state. Thanks.
