Bob Samplawski referred me to you. My family is related to Harrison Kesler, son of Jacob Susan Windbigler Kesler. I am trying to establish connections back to the Revolutionary War so that I and my 3 daughters will qualify for DAR membership. Bob suggested that I contact you because he thought you might have more information about the Windbigler and maybe Kesler sides of the family. My side of the Kesler family is through Harrison, whose son Elmer was my great grandfather. He lived in Bourbon, Marshall Co, IN. My grandfather, Gilbert Kessler was born in Bourbon, but lived in Ft. Wayne. My father, Max Kessler, was born in Ft. Wayne, and died in Charlotte, NC. I still have lots of family in the Ft. Wayne area. Anyhow, any information you could give me would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, again for any help you can give. Please feel free to email me at luci@midsouth.rr.com

I am assiting a friend of mine with her family. This is what I have so far.

Her dad was named Morris and the parents were Luther and Lucy Kesler. Morris had the following siblings; Buford, Boyd, Fred, Frances, Rublen, Idel and Louise. They may be more, like I said, I have just started. I belive the family came from Franklin County, Ga. They may descend from Oliver P. Kesler who was born 1853 and died in 1930. Anyone that might have some information, please forward it to me.

Thanks
Chad

Re: Who were children of Peter Kesler of Franklin Co VA? Was Wm Henry Kesler d. 1802 Newberry Co SC a child?

William Henry Kesler was NOT a child of Peter Kesler of Franklin Co. VA. I had posted this in this thread earlier. William Henry Kesler Came to America before 1760 and lived in PA. He migrated to Newberry Co. SC in 1784. We have published a family history on William Henry with details of his early life as much is available at this time.
I responded to your earlier message and Abraham Keasler JR. did have a son William Henry Kealser who was named after his Grandfather Henry Keasler. There is no evidence of Henry Kesler ever haveing a forename of William. His oldest son was named William Henry Kesler but not the father. It is possible but there is no evidence of this anywhere. If it were so, it would be Wilhelm Heinrich Kesler as he was from Germany. Also there are other spellings on record of Henry Kesler Sr. as Keisler or Kiesler found in various records. The spelling of Keasler began in Henry Kesler's two children David and Abraham. The other children went by Kesler or Keisler or Kiesler.

We have a possible tie to your posting. My wife Jaclyn is the Keasler-Kesler descendent and we have printed a book a couple of years ago and have included the data from CC Miller who has passed away. We do have a tie to (Randal) Rannal Kesler. We do not have the name of his wife but this data comes from CC Miller (a Kesler from Georgia) and it shows two sons, Paul and Charles (no John but that may only be because CC was unaware of John. We have done a lot of research on this family and would like to correspond directly with you as we would like to explore some of your information with ours. We can furnish a good bit of material on some connections. We attended the Kesler Reunion in 2007 in August. My e mail address is vhelmke@sbcglobal.net and please send me a note and we can explore more on Kesler-Keasler.

No William Henry was not a child of Peter Kesler of VA. William Henry was in PA before he migrated down the Great Wagon Trail to Newberry District (now Co) in South Carolina. It is thought that William Henry's Father was a Paul Kesler or Leisler also in PA.
I haven't thought of this line for quite awhile, but I checked my folders for you. I am a descendant from Elizabeth Kesler Bowers who had a younger brother Joel Kelser b1867. He lived with her when orphaned. I have a photo of the siblings about 1930, do you have that one already? Is this Joel one of your ancestors?

Joseph wansley is listed as head of household and at that time they list Ivora, Fred, Maxey, Albert, GC, Coley and Grace as their children.
My Kes(s)ler ancestor is Sarah Ellen Kes(s)ler, born 14 Aug 1840 (per gravestone), died 9 March 1909. She was married to Peter Abshire, from Franklin Co., who settled in Jefferson Co., WV, after the Civil War. Sarah is listed in the 1860 census in the home of George Copp in Shenandoah Co., VA, but the trail stops there until she shows up in the 1870 census with the first three children and Peter. They later relocated to Berkeley Co., WV, and had 3 more children, the youngest was my paternal grandmother, Margaret (Maggie) Silver Abshire Dick.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Stacie, Do you know if any of these Keslers stayed in Virginia? My great-grandmother was Sarah Ellen Kes(s)ler, possibly from Franklin Co., VA; she married Peter Abshire, also possibly from Franklin Co., VA. Each was born in 1840 and their young family appears in the Jefferson Co., VA, census. Sarah lived with a "Copp" family in the 1860 census, age 19, in Shenandoah Co., VA. This is not terribly far from Jefferson Co., VA. Her parents may have died, moved away, she may have been helping keep house, or she may have been related to someone in the household.

History of the Kesler Family of Greenbrier County

The German word “kesler” means kettle maker. Peter Kesler was born in Hess-Darmstadt, Germany in 1764. He married Catherine Sheetz in 1784. Catherine was born in 1766. Peter arrived in Maryland and journeyed to and settled in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. He lived in Mount Crawford in Rockingham County, a few miles below Harrisonburg. While there, Peter attended Friedens Church which as a combination of German Reformed and Lutheran members. This church was organized in 1762. Peter and brothers Henry and Jacob are listed as members of Friedens Church in 1799. Jacob was a Lutheran deacon and Henry was a Lutheran Elder. Records of Rockingham County show a Wollery Kesler and son. I do not know if this is another brother or relative of Peter. Peter owned 550 acres in 1789. Some of the German families that lived near each other and who attended the same church were: Tuckweider (Tuckwiller), Hutsinpiller, Dotson, Schady (Judy), Zimmerman, Kuffman (Coffman), Sheetz, Bunger, Rader, Baker, and Braun (Brown). Many of them also lived in Greenbrier County as neighbors.

In 1802 Peter moved from the Shenandoah Valley to the Richlands area east of Lewisburg in Greenbrier County. He had been in Greenbrier County years before to buy land. In 1802 Peter and Catherine bought 138 acres from Edward and Peggy Miller. In 1802 Henry and Barbara Kesler bought land from Adam Nisely in the Big Levels of Greenbrier County. In 1805 Jacob and Catherine Kesler bought land from Denis McLaughlin, Lewis Shelman, and Henry Harman. In 1807 they bought land from Jacob Hutsinpiller. In 1808 they bought land from John Bunger. In 1810 Peter bought land from Henry Crist. This land Peter sold to his son, Fredrick, who sold it to Michael Bunger. Peter’s son, Jacob, bought land adjoining his on the west side in 1816 from Jacob Bunger.

Peter and Catherine had five children. All were born before moving to Greenbrier County. The children were Jacob (born July 10, 1785 in Hagerstown, Maryland and died February 13, 1857 in Clifty, WV and is buried in the Kesler Cemetery there), Fredrick (born April 24, 1789 and died December 1, 1843 in Keslers Cross Lanes, in Nicholas County), Catherine (born February 21, 1791 and died on October 7, 1844 location unknown), Sussanah (born October 16, 1797 and died on October 8, 1859 in Mt. Cove, Fayette County), Mary Polly (born September 1, 1800 and died in 1883 in Summersville, Nicholas County). Peter died in 1832 at Richlands, Greenbrier County (east of Lewisburg) and is buried in the Richlands Cemetery along with his wife Catherine and young son Michael.

Jacob married Elizabeth Funk on December 24, 1811 in Rockingham County, Virginia. She was the daughter of John Funk and Mary Rader. She was born on November 7, 1793 and died on April 5, 1881. Fredrick married Elizabeth Hutsenpiller on August 9, 1821 in Greenbrier County. She was the daughter of Anthony Hutsenpillar and Elizabeth Harpal. She was born on January 16, 1800 and died on December 12, 1861 in Keslers Cross Lanes in Nicholas County. Frederick and wife Elizabeth are buried in Zoar Baptist Church Cemetery in Keslers Cross Lanes. Catherine married David Judy on September 24, 1814 in Greenbrier County. Sussanah married Thomas Dotson, Jr. on June 21 1815 in Greenbrier County. Mary Polly married Richard Dotson on February 7, 1821 in Greenbrier County. Thomas and Richard Dotson were brothers, the sons of Thomas Dotson, Sr.

Jacob and family moved to Fayette County. Fredrick and family moved to McClung Meadows (later called Keslers Cross Lanes in Nicholas County). David and Catherine Judy moved near Williamsburg in Greenbrier County. Both Dotson families moved to Nicholas County to help Fredrick build his home. All five children lived in the Richlands area before going to other places to live. They lived on Peter’s land or had bought land adjoining the land. Peter Kesler died in Greenbrier County in 1832. His will is in Will Book 1 in the Greenbrier County Courthouse. His heirs sold his land to Matthew Arbuckle.

Jacob Kesler’s occupation was cattleman and homebuilder. He built the first brick home in Clifty, Fayette County, WV. He attended Friedens Church in Rockingham County, Virginia and the Richlands Presbyterian Church in Greenbrier County, WV. He was baptized at the Zion Evangelical Church as a small child in Hagerstown, Maryland. He spoke fluent German and exhibited an excellent penmanship. He owned property adjoining his father on Unus Rd, Richland’s, Greenbrier County, Virginia (WV). He purchased 640 acres in Fayette County and relocated there. He and his wife Elizabeth had 13 children: Mary (born on November 8, 1812): John (born on December 1, 1813); Samuel (born October 23, 1816); Frederick J ( ?? ); Michael (Feb 19, 1820); Nancy Jane (Sept 3, 1821); Joseph F.(May 20 1823); Rebecca (Aug 29, 1827); Elizabeth (May 4, 1829); Sarah (October 3, 1825); Sarah (October 3, 1825); Mahala (May 5, 1831); Jacob Lansford (March 23, 1823); Margaret (June 3, 1835).

Jacob’s son, Jacob Lansford Kesler, was born on March 23, 1833 and died in August 1896. He married Jemima Hawver. He was the twelfth child of Jacob and Elizabeth Kesler. His son, Joseph, was a Methodist minister. He married Patience McCutcheon. He decided to become a Methodist minister instead of the Presbyterian faith of his family. The reason that he chose to do so was that the Presbyterian Church required their ministers to be seminary trained. The Methodist did not. Joseph pastured several churches including the Methodist Church at Paint Creek, WV. He and Patience had nine children. They were Arnold, Russell, Ira Jacob, Catherine, Iva, Austin, Eccles, and two girls who died. Joseph was killed by a car while attending a Methodist convention in Chicago. Patience died in South Charleston, WV.

Russell, Iva and Catherine married into the Fain family. Russ married Mary Fain. Iva married Mary Fain’s brother George. Catherine married William Fain, brother of George and Mary. Their parents were Jeremiah and Pheobe Sadler Fain. They were originally from Grayson, Kentucky. They moved to Winona, Fayette County, WV in the late 1800’s.

On one of the family crypts, the one that Jacob and Naomi rest in, says that they are natives of Virginia, so it is very possible. I seem to hit a brick wall every time I try to find out more about Jacob. I have found additional information about Naomi, but Jacob is another thing. He died in 1854, and the inscription on the crypt says he was 61 years old when he passed. My great great grandfather was born here in Louisiana, so they were here before 1836, and I know they were married in 1819 in Kentucky. Other than that I am at a stand still. I am trying to get some additional information from my aunt and uncle, maybe they will have more than my dad does.

Jacob Kesler (B. abt 1793) Franklin County, VA - the Louisiana connection

I am having a very difficult time tracing my family. From the family bible I know my great-grandfathers name and DOB, and it also lists my great-grandmother, but other than that I hit deadends. I do have a list of burials in the New Orleans area (Lafayette Cemetery # 1) , and can put a few in line, but I surely could use some help. Here is a list of what I have:
Jacob Kesler - native of Virginia B. abt 1793 D. 11 Sep 1854
Naomi B. Hukill Kesler B. abt 1792 D. 26 Sep 1868
Eliza Jane & Naomi Kesler
Amanda Kesler B. abt 1829 D. 8 May 1877
Anna L Hogan Kesler B. abt 1843 D. 19 Mar 1874 (wife of Dewitt Kesler)
Dewitt Clinton Kesler B. abt 1836 D. 27 Nov 1898
Gertrude L Kesler B 10 Jan 1865 D 16 Sep 1896
John Clinton Kesler B 7 May 1867 D 10 Feb 1918 (my great- grandfather)

other children of Dewitt are Walter Viren and Kate . If there are others I am not aware of them.

Walter V. married Chritine and they had 5 children (Isabelle, Walter, Gertrude, William, and Alec)

John Clinton had one child that I am aware of, my grandfather, Jennings Jack Kesler b. 2 Apr 1912 d 22 Jan 1981. He married Felicie Giunintano, and they had two sons. Richard Jack and Jennings James** (my father).

Any help/information that anyone can provide will be greatly appreciated. I've browsed several profiles that list a Jacob born around 1793 from VA, and it seems that that is where he disappeared, maybe I have the key to that mystery for some.

Thanks,
Stacie Kesler
Wanda,
Great to hear from you. I do have some of the Kesler family history that Aunt Juanita mentioned but it's all hand written stuff with no documentation or authentication (and difficult to decipher). I tried doing some research about 15 years ago but the web was certainly not as developed then as it is now so it was difficult for me to get info, especially since I was in the Air Force at the time and moving around all the time. I've found more about the family in the last two days than I had in the previous 15 years. Just looking for more...
Greg

Hi,
I am looking for any information on Paul Kesler/Keisler 1725 to ? married to Mary Ann Wells. He is my 8th Great Grandfather, but I have run into a roadblock as far as where he came from, when he was married and when he died. My father John D. seems to remember that he came from Northern Germany around 1740 but I cant prove it.

mkessler@cnsmk.com

Greg,
Your father, Lavelle Kesler, is my mother-in-law-s second cousin. Her name is Ovalene Kesler Hardman (daughter of James Nathan Kesler, brother of Jackson Oliver Kesler). Your grandfather, Hoyt, is her first cousin.

Ronnie & I have compiled a Kesler history. I thought Juanita told me that you had all of the Kesler info.

Would like to hear from you again.

Wanda
