What is also suspect is that it was John kester, not William, who was the Hessian soldier, and his son William died as a relatively young man. However, Ira and Frank are descendants of John and William. Just shows how family stories get twisted. I've never seen this article although my birthplace is 50 miles south of Rochester and Ira was my great great grandfather. Thanks for the info. There are some things in here that will help my geneology search. Would like to know how to access anybody's Kester family records.

Re: KESTER, JOHN - Hessian

The detals and dates of the following account are suspect. For instance - land was not likely granted to the Kester family in Camillus after the Revolutionary War - but purchased in 1802. Kester family records suggest they were in New Hurley in the 1790's.

"King William" would appear to be William, count of Hesse-Hanau

John Kester; William Kester; Ira Kester; James Franklin Kester:
ROCHESTER DEMOCRAT AND CHRONICLE; Tuesday, July 21, 1914 - PROUD OF HEIRLOOM FROM HESSIAN WHO JOINED WASHINGTON - Dansville Man Has a Chain of Unusual History - It's Hundreds of Years Old.
* Dansville, July 20, - Frank Kester, an employee of the Power Specialty Company of Dansville, wears a very modest looking little double strand watch chain which has quite a history attached to it. This chain, which is of German silver, was brought to this country by Mr. Kester's great-grandfather, William Kester, during the war of the American revolution. It will be remembered that early in the war King George III of England, hired 30,000 soldiers from the King of Hesse, Germany. William Kester was one of these Hessians, and King William of Hesse, at this time being hard pressed for money and having plenty of men, sold 10,000 soldiers to England for 12,000 pounds sterling. Of course, the men who were bought and sold never knew where they were going or why. Accordingly, Mr. Kester landed with one body of these Hessians on the American shore in due course of time, and was one of the thousand men captured at Trenton, N. J., on the memorable Christmas night, 1776, when Washington re-crossed the Delaware river when full of floating ice.
* Next day when William Kester was committed to the soldiers' prison along with the other prisoners of war, he was asked this question, "What are you fighting for?" He answered, "For my country." The poor man never knew that he had been sold by his own king for money to fight against the colonists of England, and as soon as he could be made to understand just what was going on and what part he was playing in the war drama then being enacted, expressed a desire to enlist in the American cause. He was gladly accepted, for men were none too plenty for Washington about this time, and he immediately shouldered a gun in the cause of the patriots and continued to fight her battles until the end of the war. When peace was finally established, he was honorably discharged from the army that he had crossed the Atlantic to fight. He was also given a soldier's right to eighty acres of land in the territory now embraced in the town of Camillus, Onondaga county, New York state. Here he lived happily for a number of years until his death, when the little silver chain, which he had cherished close to his heart all … long years, finally passed to his son, also named William Kester, who spent all his life on the little old farm and died leaving farm and heirloom to his son Ira Kester. Ira lived on the old homestead farm for a time and finally moved to Dansville in 18_2.
* He came by way of the Erie canal, and came into Dansville after the old Erie and Genesee Valley canal, then extending from Rochester to Dannsville. He settled in the neighboring town of Patchinsville where he opened a blacksmith shop and the balance of his life was spent in Patchinsville and Dansville, dying in 1884. The little silver chain heirloom on his death passed to his son, Frank Kester, the present proud possessor, who says that at his death it will go to his son, who is also named William Kester after his old great-grandfather, who had been so … betrayed by his king and sent to America when he thought he was doing only what a loyal soldier should do, namely, go where he was sent to fight for his country. Shortly after the old Hessian had enlisted in the army of the American patriots, his father died in Hesse, Germany, and as William was the only child, his estate was confiscated by the king of Hesse on account of his having deserted from the English army of Hessian soldiers and join the American cause. He, however, felt that America was good enough for him and made no effort to regain the estate, but retained what had grown by this time as dear in his heart - citizenship in this great republic, and the little silver watch chain.

KESTER, Bruce R. & Mabel Judd in Oregon

I am transcribing the Evergreen Cemetary in Ontario, Malheur Co., Oregon and thought I would post pictures of the Pre-1900 headstones for those interested in having them. This is a very large cemetary, there is a possibility there could be other family members buried here after this time period. If you are interested in them, I can look for them specifically.

Wilhemina (Paplow) Kester b. 1865 in Germany, 1900 lived in Chicago

I need help to figure out what happened to Wilhemina Kester.
I found her with my gg grandfather in the 1900 census. It says she is a daughter.
This is what I know about her.
June 13 1900 lived on West 20th in Chicago. She lived with her Widowed father John Paplow (spelled wrong on census Peblo). Wilhemina was a window, age 34, no children. Came to US in 1886, Domestic job according to census. In fact all the above came from the census.
I was suprised to see her with him because I've never heard of her. She didn't come to the US with her parents. I don't find her in any of the St Matthew's Lutheran Church records, which I own two microfilms of.

Does anyone have any suggestions. I can't seem to find her anywhere else. She might have gotten married again.

Hopefully someone out there is related to the Kester's and might know of Wilhemina.
I will list this on the Cook County Chicago board too.
Thanks.

Hi Jeff, I'm always open to other researchers' information. I'd like to look at what you have on these people. Send me your email address and I'll forward my pedigree on my paternal line which is where the Kesters, Pounds, Starks fall in. You and I are probably related somewhere down the line. Please send me yours as well, so I can see where our lines cross.

Thanks,
Paula Jewell

Am interested in the Kester line of Ada Kester married to James Kessinger. Recently recovered some pics at an auction that were Worrell and Kester pics in additon to Kessinger pics. My husbands line includes Worrell's and Kessingers. My father in law told me that Ada grew up next to my husband's grandfather Emmitt Worrell in Camp Creek, Mercer County, WV. Hope someone can help me connect the Worrell line to the Kester's. Would also be glad to share copies to pics in hopes that they can be identified.

Re: William A. Kester - Freeland, PA

Hello Cousin Charlie! Indeed your mother was my grandfather's sister; and was named in the Will of her mother, Annie Sipple [Sometimes written as "Sippel" - BTW, I have a copy of that Will, if you don't have one and would like one]. I have run into a dead end in finding beyond Esther Beck Kester - the wife of Stephen Kester. Stephen was Alfred Kester's father; and Esther ["Nettie" and "Ettie" on the census records, so that took some ferreting out!] was his wife. My grandfather was William Alfred; his father was Alfred [Annie Sipple's husband]; his father was Stephen Kester [said to be from Blackcreek Township or Sugar Loaf, I have to go dig some things out to make sure which it was]. I have, as you may know, found the tombstone of Esther ["Beloved wife of Stephen Kester"] in the Stephen Kester plot just behind your Uncle Raymond's old house, in Freeland. Traced the census records as far as possible and it looks like Stephen may have lived with his son, John, after Esther's death - also had a message board about that some years ago [never followed up because I was too much a novice at the time], I will have to root out - and I figure he died between 1900 - 1910. I peg it at that, because Esther died in 1897 and the Will was probated in 1900, with Stephen as Executor and Alfred [I think] and someone else as bondsmen. Stephen appears in the 1900 Census for PA, living with son, John; but he does not appears in the 1910 Census. The "great flood" in Wilkes-Barre ruined all the records for that era, and it was a sheer fluke that I found the excerpt from Esther's probate in the County Records "reclaimed data" files. I have Esther's parents names somewhere, but they both came over from Germany and it appears nearly hopeless to find them in the Immigration Books to date. Stephen was born in the USA. I thought, at his age, he would have likely served in the Civil War, but I can find no record of him there yet - assume he would have been a Union troop? Before she died, Aunt Loretta Zierdt [my father's sister], went over all the data that my grandmother had given my mother decades earlier [back in the '40's or so] and added what she could remember. So, I know about your grandmother, her marriage, and the move from Pennsylvania, because I think I have the notebook with the city and state to which she moved after she married. Also, Nicholas was the "informant" on the death certificates for Annie Sippel and Alfred Kester. Anyway, this is wonderful to find you and I do hope you will reply so that I can get to know you and, hopefully, you and I will be able to find Stephen's parents - maybe even Esther's! You can call me at: 561-758-1432; and, this reply should show that my email is: kitkanpro@aol.com. We live in the West Palm Beach area of Florida and my husband has endured 3 trips to Freeland/ Drums over the last 4 years, as I combed what records I could find during each summer vacation. If you set up a time to connect, I will try to have dug out the stuff I have, so the two of us have a better chance at filling in the gaps. It is really tragic that there was such a falling out among our ancestors that our line was essentially cut off and my father and his siblings never had a chance to meet his relatives. Anyway, thanks for replying and I hope to hear from you soon. Bette

These individuals moved to Luzerne Co. Penn around 1819/20. It is believed that a number of family members remained in Northampton. They are found in the 1822 Sugarloaf Twp tax roll. Any info would be appreciated.
