Re: Keyes from County Laois

I found your post on Roots and wanted to respond via email to you. My great grandmother was Bridget Keyes b. approximately 1854 in Ireland was the wife of Henry Powers. Bridget and Henry both came to New Jersey from Ireland. Where in Ireland we do not know. I did learn that Bridget Keyes had a brother John Keyes born approximately 1856. Church records indicate his father was John Keyes and Bridget Connors of Ireland. That is all I know at this time. Is it possible you may have info on a John Keyes with a wife Bridget Connors. I assume they remained in Ireland. My great grandmother Bridget first child was born in New Jersey in 1872. We do not know when she came to USA but census records of 1880 indicate she was from Ireland. I am so frustrated trying to glean any info about her. I do know she was a midwife and a dressmaker.

Kindest Regards,

celticpower41@gmail.com
This Sarah Keyes was Margaret Reed's mother. Margaret couldn't have died in 1846 becasue she survived the Donner Party with all four of her children. Her husband was the one who brought the rescuers to get them from Sacramento. They were the only family that didn't eat anyone. She was still alive in 1856 because her husband was writing to her in San Jose in June from Santa Cruz, CA where he was mining for gold.

I'm looking for the father and any further ancestors of David Keyes/Kyes. Any dates would be helpful too. His children were, Ebenezer, Elihu G., Samuel, Asahel, Ashley, Leban, Ephraim, Russell, Alfred Harrison, & James C. I found on another message board a list of possible ancestors. They are: Cyprian Keys, Cyprian Deacon Keys, Thomas Keyes, Elias Keyes, Robert Keyes, John Key, & Peter Kaye (born in England 1559). Can anybody verify this? And does anybody have any dates?

Thank you!!!

Charles D. KEYES killed in 1903 train wreck Alexandria VA

Charles was the son of George W. Keyes (born about 1848 in probably Prince William County, Virginia). Some records say KEYS, but the later records say KEYES. I would appreciate hearing from people researching this family.
----------
The Baltimore Sun
Baltimore, Maryland
12 June 1903 (page 10)
transcription by Laura Keyes Perry
FATAL WRECK IN VIRGINIA
C. D. Keyes, Of Alexandria, Killed And Three Others Injured.
[Special Dispatch to the Baltimore Sun]
ALEXANDRIA, VA., June 11 -- Charles D. Keyes was fatally injured and three others hurt in a head-on collision which occurred between a northbound work train on the Southern road near Ravensworth last night. The dead man was about 30 years old and was a railroad insurance agent. His hip was crushed, his arm and leg badly bruised, and he was otherwise injured. He died at the hospital here.
The others injured are:
NATHANIEL STANLAY, of Alexandria, brakeman, left leg severely cut.
A. B. JOHNSON, colored, Alexandria, fireman; cut about the face and bruised.
The collision occurred about 8 P M, between northbound local freight train No. 62 and a southbound work train at a point just 12 miles below Alexandria. The engines plowed into each other, the force of the shock wrecking several of the cars of the local freight and demolishing the few attached to the work engine. Both locomotives were overturned and several of the cars were derailed and demolished.
Young Keyes was found fastened to the ground with a portion of the wrecked engine on which he had ridden pressing against his right side. He was conscious and remained so for three hours, while efforts were being made to release him. But the trainmen were practically powerless until the wrecking train, which was made up here soon after the accident, reached the scene. Then it required a considerable time to remove the engine on account of the large mass of debris.
Officials state that the wreck was caused by the northbound train not stopping at Burke Station, where it had orders to pass the work train. It was late this morning before the track was cleared away and traffic resumed. In the meantime southbound trains were tied up here and northbound trains held below the wreck.
Mr. Keyes, who was fatally injured, was agent in this section for the Standard Life and Accident Insurance Company, and he traveled along the line of the Southern road in Virginia. He left Alexandria yesterday afternoon on No. 15, the passenger train for the Manassas branch, in company with his father, Mr. George W. Keyes, who is Inspector of engines on the Southern. The young man got off at Manassas and in the evening boarded the engine of No. 62 to return to Alexandria. He was riding in the cab when the collision occurred.

I've got my Keyes family now, and they didn't settle very close to Cedar Rapids. You might get a reply from Dan Keyes, who I think had some connections there. You will need the names of at least your grandparent Keyes, and hopefully your great grandfather. Find them in the census of 1930 and see if you can trace them back to the 1850 census. If they are out of Connecticut (and the census gives the state of birth) you probably have hit the very old colonial family of Robert and Sarah Keyes, who settled in Watertown, MA about 1632 --- English born. They were previously in Chelmsford, MA, but couldn't have immigrated too much earlier. (Not on the Mayflower.)

I used to think our name was peculiar and not widespread.

My great grandfather moved to Webster City to work on the Court House (since burned down). My grandfather was born there about 1878 and my dad in 1914. But my Dad moved to Minnesota about 1920. I currently live in Ohio.
