Re: Keys Family - Bogside, Derry, N.I.

Hi Phillip,

I'm bored at work and I've found some interesting information based upon googling my own name! Hugh Keys, your father was the son of James Keys - your grandfather. James Keys was 30 at the time of the Census in 1911 (now online). James Keys was married to Maggie Keys, they were married in 1904-1903. They had three children at this time. John (6), Frances (4) and Maggie (2). They resided at 15 Lewis Street in a 2 roomed house. James is noted as being a labourer (lamp fitter). Is Lewis Street in the Bogside? I don't know Derry well enough to know. I know that Hugh would have been born in 1915 or thereabouts, is this correct? I'm attaching the link so you can look at this for yourself. The interesting thing is that James at the times of the Census, so therefore my Great Grandfather, if I've got the correct information, was Presbyterian prior to partition, isn't that fascinating? What happened? I remember vividly a great aunt on the Keys side who said that there were rumours in the family about an illegitmate child / scandal re religion that accounted for our lineage. Interestingly this is supported by one of the posts on this site! Though not as far back as you'd imagine. I've managed to work back as far as you'd think. My guess is that John Keys was the father of James Keys, John Keys was married either to Sarah Donohue. There are two John Keys's that I keep encountering. There's a note saying that John Keys Jnr married Mary Anne Sweeney in Letterkenny in 1872. I think that this might be ANOTHER John Keys. This where the thread gets confusing... Are we descended from Lord Harvey? Is John Keys m Mary Ann Sweeney your great grandfather, is he the result of an illegitimate lineage - this is where I get confused... interesting though eh!

http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/reels/nai002840370/

I dont think there could be too many named this. Is this the Harry Keys born 1898 in Mt. City TN, lived in Cleveland TN and Chattanooga TN, and then died in 1951 in Coral Gables FL? Parents were William Reed Keys and Bessie (Rebeca) Butler Keys. If so, he's my grandfather by his first marriage. Lisa Hale

I'm looking for others researching the Keys-Riley families of East Texas. These families lived in Polk, Walker, and San Jacinto County. My G. Grandmother was Willena Keys. She married Sidney Riley (son of Charles Riley and Sarah Grosvenor) in March 1902. Lena's parents were George W. Keys and Amanda Ricks. George's parents were John J. Keys and Margaret Thompson. Hope to hear from others who may have items such as photos, letters, etc to share.
My name is Phil Keys I live in the Bournemouth area of the U.K. My family came from the Bogside in Derry. I and my family were brought up in the Glen area of Derry. My father, who's name was Hugh was from Carlisle Place in the Bogside. He was a Joiner/cabinet maker. His father, my grandfather James lived in the Bogside and had a horse drawn taxi service. I suspect that his father, my great grandfather was the John Keys that you mentioned. I would be very grateful if you could give me any info you have on my family beyond this.

I am interested in the Moore Co, NC connection to the KEYS. My 4th ggrandfather was John KEYS b abt 1785 NC m Ursula SLATON b 1787 Moore Co, NC. There is a good chance they were married in NC. Their first son was born 1807 SC and the family was found in Christian Co, KY in 1810 along with other KEYS family. I would be very interested in discussing possible connections with you. As a side...the SLATON family emigrated on to GA while Ursula emigrated with her husband John KEYS and family to KY.
HonoreO@aol.com

Willis Madison Keys--Christian County, Kentucky->Missouri->Kansas

I'm looking for any information Willis Madison Keys who was born on 17 May 1824 in Bainbridge, Christian County, Kentucky. He was on his own in the 1850 census. He moved to Clay County, Missouri, sometime between 1850 and 1854 when he married Louisa Chaney, who was born and raised in Missouri. They then moved to Kansas, where he died in 1906.

Throughout his life he worked as a stone mason and a farmer. He supposedly was a member of the Union Army under General Thomas; I've found his wife's pension record, but the cursive that says what unit he was in is too difficult for me to read and decipher, as it is also abbreviated.

If anyone has any information on Willis, especially parents and siblings, I would love if you shared it with me.

Franklin P. Keys' wife was Laura Ellen Hendrickson. Laura is buried with the Keys next to the Hendricksons: Laura was the daughter of John M. Hendrickson and Rosetta Rogers (later Austin after John's death). Laura's older brother was Wilber W. Hendrickson who married Laura D. "Ducie" Shank. When Laura died, Wilber married H. Olive Strouble (and that gets complicated...she is the school marm who changed the Strobel spelling to Strouble!). I have a large Hendrickson-Strouble Family Tree Maker File I can send you.
