Re: LEANDER KIDD

Leander J. Kidd 6 Nov. 1858, born in Campbell County, GA.
died 26 July 1943 in Fulton County, GA. Married Married Mary F. Brown McClure 4 Jan 1900. Leander was the son of James Milton Kidd who died in Elmira Prison in the civil war, grandson of Lilburn Lewis Kidd. Interesting news article:

She Loved Kidd, Married M’clure.

Miss Brown did so to please Father and Mother.

After a very short time

McClure and wife quarrel and separate.

Then there was a reconciliation

But the second time they disagree and she gets Divorce and marries Kidd

Fairburn, Georgia March 7 – Special - Mr. L. J. Kidd, a prosperous and highly esteemed citizen of this county, and Mrs. Mary F. McClure, nee Brown, were recently happily united in marriage at the residence of the bride’s mother. This is the sequel of a story covering a period of the past twenty years which would furnish ample material for the writing of a novel in which would combine love, disappointment and to some extent tragedy in real life.
Twenty years ago there was no more beautiful, cultured or popular young lady in this county than Miss Mary F. Brown, daughter of A. H. Brown, one of the wealthiest and most highly respected citizens of the county. Accomplished, charming and the pet of the household, the young lady’s ardent admirers thronged about her, each pressing his suit in earnest, but at last the struggle for the prize was between A. H. McClure and L. J. Kidd, two handsome and popular young swains of the community. The long and close race for the prize was nearing a finish; the friends of each contestant confidently believed in the success of their respective favorite. It was said by some that the young lady loved Kidd, and would, if left to herself, have chosen him, but that her father had a preference for McClure and that the latter having this influence on his side was thus enabled to win. Be that what it may, McClure was accepted and in the month of May 1881, the marriage took place. Time rolled along and for a time everything seemed to be going well, but mutterings of distant thunder which betokened the rising storm were heard. Troubles came, and the marriage, which at first had promised a life of happiness for both, proved to be an unhappy one. In the meantime a little girl had been born to the couple. In 1885 McClure left his pretty wife and baby and went to Texas as a result of their disagreement, and Mrs. McClure returned to her father – under the protecting care of the parental roof. By and by the husband, lonely in the wilds of the west, returned to Georgia and effected a reconciliation with the young wife. As a result the reunited family emigrated to the frontiers of Texas in the first of the year 1887. But the old wound of domestic discord broke out afresh in their western home, and finding they could not live happily together the couple agreed to separate forever. Accordingly on the 1st of November, 1887, the unhappy wife with her little girl started on the long journey back to Georgia and again took up her abode under the parental roof, the home of her happy childhood and triumphant girlhood.
On the same day McClure packed his belongings and turned his face westward, plunging further into the wild and wooly west, but subsequently he too returned to Georgia and lived at the home of his boyhood with his aged parents. There was never any more effort for reconciliation and soon afterwards the wife filed suit for total divorce from the husband, alleging cruel treatment for the grounds. Although it was understood that the couple would never live together again. McClure desperately resisted his wife’s suit for divorce, employing able counsel and contesting stubbornly every charge in the petition. After a hard fight in the superior court of Campbell county the jury returned a verdict against the petitioner and there the matter was allowed to drop.
The Cycles of time kept rolling onward, and in the meantime a agency more powerful than any court of justice intervened to do that which law had failed to do. Death laid his fatal finger on the husband, and about a year ago he went on that long journey from which no traveler ever returns.
Sequel – Now, after twenty years of eventful life the unhappy woman becomes the wife of her early love, who, be it said to his credit, has demeaned himself in a quite and most gentlemanly manner, remaining single and accumulating a competency. Who will say that their cup of happiness will not be full?

This article appeared in the Atlanta Journal on March 8th 1900.
The L. J. Kidd was Leander J. Kidd, the son of James Milton Kidd, and the Grandson of Lilburn Lewis Kidd.
Mary F. Kidd and Leander J. Kidd had at least one child together, James Raymond Kidd born in 1904
Leander lived until 26 July 1943.
I suppose that there may be another sequel, Leander and Mary were living together in the 1920 census, they were living apart in the 1930 census, Mary was living with her son James Raymond and his family, and Leander was living alone, yet they remained married.
Thanks for your thoughts. I'm trying to understand the whole "scotch-Irish" thing. I do believe, they had to come from England to arrive in this country - but were they first Irish or Scotch????

Maybe a silly question - so very much to wonder about, isn't it? I have a new book about the Scotch Irish coming to this country and it has so much to do with their history and being ruled by England - then getting away to a better life, here. Quite enthralling. You see, I live in the Appalachians and of course, it is the Scotch Irish and my parents came from the Big South Fork - and my heritage is Scotch Irish Kidd and then german, Koger, on my Mom's side.

Thanks for all you add to the research.

Dee

ancestry of Larkin Kidd of Wayne Co KY and Tazewell Co VA

Dear Dee

Thanks for your kind words. Larkin Kidd of Wayne Co KY was one of the older children of William Kidd, southwest VA pioneer. Larkin was born ca 1774 in Virginia, although the exact location is not known. William Kidd is believed to have left Albemarle Co VA either before or shortly after his father Aaron's death in 1775. The identity of his wife or wives is not known.

Aaron Kidd was the son of William and Margaret Kidd of Middlesex Co VA and the grandson of Thomas Kidd I, immigrant to Virginia by 1646.

Current YDNA evidence suggests an English origin for Thomas Kidd I, rather than Scottish or Irish. However, this is not fully proven. As more YDNA evidence becomes available, we may be able to narrow this down. At present, we have no verified YDNA links between the Virginia Kidds and those of England, but we only have a few English Kidds in the study.

Sandra

Sandra Kidd
Kidd YDNA study co-administrator
Descendant of William Kidd of southwest Virginia through his son Elijah Kidd of Tazewell Co VA
Yorkshire Kidds - anyone for a Y-DNA study?

Dear all,

Are there any male Kidds out there (or relatives of living male Kidds) who have ancestors from Yorkshire? I have paternal ancestors from Bridlington, Yorkshire (1700s), and am partaking in a Y-DNA (paternal line) project through family tree DNA (a DNA testing service based in the US):

http://www.familytreedna.com/public/Kidd/default.aspx

The vast majority of participants in this study are currently from the US, most with English ancestry from Soham, Cambs. Yorkshire is also a hot-spot for the Kidd name, but unfortunately very few people from the UK have so far taken part in this study. My Y-DNA results have shown me to be of a rare type T haplogroup, and possibly of Roman descent, so if there are any other Kidds out there with the same haplogroup we would almost certainly share the same common ancestor. I would encourage anyone to partake in this - though you do have to pay (about £70 for a 37-marker analysis), the information you receive is very valuable. Only one male Kidd from a family group need participate, as the Y-DNA passes through the generations relatively unchanged.

Best regards

Dan

My gg-grandfather was James KIDD born 1802 in Montrose, Scotland. He married Margaret Adam in 1823 and had a large family. His son James b. 1825 was my g-grandfather. I was told on a visit to the USA in 2001 that one of the sons of James (1802) went to Australia - but I have never been able to prove this. Are you able to go back a generation? If so, maybe we will find a link.

Doreen Baxter (nee KIDD)

seeking descendants of Nathaniel Kidd-Hannah Brittain/Britton

This is just a reminder post to the Kidd message board that we are still seeking a proven male descendant of the Nathaniel Kidd-Hannah Brittain/Britton line for participation in the Kidd YDNA study. Nathaniel and Hannah had a number of sons, so it is very likely there are male descendants living who qualify for the study. This couple lived in Ohio, but Nathaniel was in a Revolutionary War Pennsylvania militia unit before moving to Ohio.

If you are one of these male descendants, or if you think you know anyone who is, I would like to talk with you about participating in the Kidd YDNA study.

We now have two study participants from a Pennsylvania line of Kidds who may be connected to the Nathaniel Kidd ancestral line, but we need a Nathaniel Kidd descendant to prove the connection among these Kidd families of Pennsylvania.

More about the Kidd YYDNA study can be found at www.familytreedna.com/public/Kidd or by emailing me at skkidd@bellsouth.net

Sandra Kidd
Kidd YDNA study co-administrator
Descendant of Thomas Kidd, immigrant to Virginia by 1646
I think that you might be referring to my Aunt Minnie and my cousin Billy. Billy's father was called Jimmy. Jimmy and Minnie have been separated for many years now. If you send me your contact info. I will forward it to them. The did live in Kentucky and Il. many years ago. In fact Minnie was born in Kentucky.

Alexander KIDD c.1766

I am looking for information on Alexander KIDD who married Isabel GRUAR. I have found two entries on the IGI that could possibly be them, in 1790, but I can't determine if they are correct as I don't have any certain proof of when or where Isabel was born. I have found two possible births for 1763, in Glenisla, Angus, Scotland. I did find an Alexander KIDD in the 1841 Census livin in Airlie, Angus, Scotland which could him. Stating that he was born c.1766 in Angus, Scotland. He was living with Janet KIDD born c.1786 Angus, Scotland. The only entries for children I have for Alexander and Isabel are William b.1794 and John b.1796 - both born in Eassie, Angus... which isn't too far from Airlie, Angus. William was my Great-Great-Great-Great-Grandfather. I have also found a burial for Alexander in Airlie, Angus in 1844 but there isn't any information to aid research!

Re: Alexander and Mary Kidd

Hi Doreen,
Have just received a copy of the marriage certificate btw Alexander and Mary from another source. Info from that certificate-Alexanders' parent where John and Janet Kidd nee Carmichael and that Alexander and Mary where married in 1859 in Greenock Scotland. Alexander was a sailmaker and his father John was a ship carpenter, and mother Janet was deceased at the time of the wedding. I believe that Alexander was born in 1839 and his brother John born 1840. Hope that this may be of some help and you may have found a link
Regards
Vicki
