"The History of the Church of the United Brethren in Christ" notes that Benjamin KIGER of Illinois died in 1849. Benjamin was the husband of Catherine WEIKLE and father of the widely known William WEIKLE KIGER, an early settler of Oregon. I believe that Benjamin likely died in McLean Co. IL - which is where we see his widow, Catherine KIGER, and daughter, Martha (KIGER) GRIFFIN living at the time of the 1850 US census. Also there at that time is John E. KIGER, who I believe is the youngest child of Benjamin and Catherine. Benjamin had been a long time preacher of the United Brethren of Christ church while in Ohio. He was first associated with the Scioto conference (1835-1842) and spent a couple more years associated with the Miami conference. He was noted as being absent from the conference in 1846 & 1847. Benjamin & Catherine had sold a parcel of their land holdings in Clinton Co. OH in 1846 - the same year that Martha KIGER had married William GRIFFIN. John E. KIGER was married late in 1848 in McLean Co. IL. It appears that the KIGER family had moved to Illinois circa 1847.
