Kilbourns in Chesterfield, Hampshire Co MA

Hello Listers,

I am trying to find the parents, siblings etc of my 3x ggrandmother, Nancy Kilborn. She was born about 1780 (location unknown) and was married to Martin Eggleston in 1802 in Middlefield, Hampshire Co.

I found a note that I had made for myself from an unknown resource, indicating that there was a Rev Joseph Kilborn who was the pastor at the Congregational Church in Chesterfield in the late 1770's. The note indicated that he died in 1780.

Chesterfield was very close to Middlefield and the time frame would fit. Does anyone have any information about this Rev Joseph Kilbourn? Would anyone know if he is mentioned in Payne Kenyon's book about the Kilborns?

I appreciate any help that comes my way on this brick wall........

Thanks,

Colleen Lill
Alberta Canada

Thank you for this information, dnkilburn. I am lead to believe, then, that George Kilbourn of Rowley is not the son of Thomas and Frances Kilbourn from Wood Ditton, England. Therefore, does anyone have any other information about George from Rowley or am I stuck at a dead end? I read somewhere, I forget where, that all Kilbourns in America are descendants of Thomas and Frances from Wood Ditton. This must not be correct then.? Is it possible that my George (hehe he's mine now ;)) is a descendent of one of Thomas' brothers or uncles? Is there any information surrounding those branches of the Kilbourn family?

There is no evidence that Thomas Kilbourne, settler of Weathersfield, left a will.

Following are notes from my file:

There is no record of the emigration of George, the son of Thomas and Frances (Moody), to New England . The passenger list for the ship "Increase", 15 April 1635 embarkation does not include a Geo Kilbourne. Some genealogists have raised the question whether the George who settled at Rowley , Mass. , was the son of Thomas and Frances (Moody) Kilbourne. See The Great Migration: Immigrants to New England, 1634-1635, vol. 4, by Robert Charles Anderson, Boston : 2005, The Great Migration Study Project, NEHGS, pp 148-151. See Hale, House and Related Families by Donald Lines Jacobus and Edgar Francis Waterman, The Connecticut Historical Soc., Hartford , Conn. , 1952; see John Dwight Kilbourne 1926- The Ancestry of Thomas Kilbourn (1578-c1637) of Wood Ditton, Cambridgeshire , England and Wethersfield , Connecticut , Washington , D.C, 1991, c1992, endnote no. 217, p. 74-75. In The Ancestry of Sarah Stone, Wife of James Patten, by Walter Goodwin Davis, Portland ME, Southworth Press, 1930, page 95, George Kilbourn is left unattached; i.e., there is no reference to George's parents and place of origin, other than Eng.; note that this book also contains a chapter on Thomas and Frances (Moody) Kilbourn, but this chapter does not include mention of the George who settled at Rowley.

George Kilbourne Roxbury and Rowley,MA ? c.1636-1640

I have conflicting information regarding George Kilbourne. Does anyone know if there were two George Kilbournes living in MA in the 1630s 1640s?

This site http://www.stupakgen.net/Genealogy/Spencer/02816_kilb.htm
says "George came to Wethersfield Connecticut, on the "Increase" in 1635. He was in Roxbury Massachusetts by 1636, and in Rowley Mass by 1639, being one of the first settlers there. He had a house on Bradford Street, and one acre of land. Most of our information on George and his descendants is from the Genealogical Dictionary of New England. Other sources say he did not come with the family in 1635, but on a later boat. One source (D.L. Jacobus) says he is not included in Thomas' will, and therefore questions whether he was a son of Thomas."

Does anyone have a copy of Thomas Kilbourne b Wood Ditton's will?

George is not listed as a passanger on the "Increase" in 1635 but I am unable to find the ship he did arrive on. Does anyone know this?

The info I have on George Kilbourne is that he is son of Thomas and Frances (Moody)Kilbourne. Born around Feb. 12, 1611 or 1612. Married Elizabeth (possibly Barker). Had 7 children, Joseph is my ancestor.

If anyone has proof of his connection to Thomas Kilbourne or info about 2 George Kilbournes I would really appreciate it.
An old list

My grandmother was a Kilbourne from Berkey, Ohio. When my uncle (her son) recently passed away, my brother obtained from his estate a list that listed the names, birth dates, marriage dates, and dates of death for a number of Kilbournes starting from 1857 up through the late 1800's. The list is in pen and ink and my grandmother had noted which name on the list was her father beside his name in pencil. If anyone has any interest in this list, I could probably get my brother to scan it and make it available.........L.
Samuel Kilborn of Hampshire co MA

I have been working on my brickwall of Nancy Kilborn (Kilbourne) for years. I have her marriage record to
Martin Eggleston, Marr int Sept 27 1802, Middlefield, Hampshire Co MA. Martin was the son of Benjamin Eggleston and Mary Gordon. The problem is that I have been unable to determine who her parents/siblings were.

Working under the theory that perhaps Nancy's father and Benjamin Eggleston perhaps had business dealings of some type together in/around Middlefield, I found several land records in Hampshire Co that mention Samuel Kilborn. The records were located in the Grantee/Grantor Index, however I've been unable to determine the correct film numbers that have the actual land deeds. Samuel was also the plaintiff in several court cases in the Court of Common Pleas.

In addition to this Samuel Kilborn, I have found references (also in the Hampshire Co Grantee/Grantor index) to other Kilborns - ie Benjamin Kilborn, Jonathon Kilborn, Calvinia Kilborn, Freeman Kilborn, George Kilborn, Martha Kilborn, Hezekiah Kilborn.

Can anyone please tell me if they might be familiar with this Samuuel Kilborn? Is he mentioned in the Payne/Kenyon Kilborn book anywhere? In the 1800 Hampshire Co census, there is a Samuel in Buckland and another Samuel Kilbourn in Wilbraham. Has anyone come across any dealings with Kilborn/Eggleston together?

In Middlefield, the ONLY mention of the Kilborn surname in the vital records is the marriage record of Nancy Kilborn and Martin Eggleston.

Any help is appreciated.

thanks,

Colleen Lill
Alberta, Canada

The Patrick Andrews that married Ann Bigger was not from Montgomery County. He was from Prince George's / Calvert Counties. This Patrick Andrews was the third husband of Ann Bigger. I don't believe Patrick and Ann had any chidren together because of their age at the time of their marriage. Ann died a few years after their marriage and Patrick's health was failing. Maybe Thomas was a son from a previous marriage of Patrick's. If I remember correctly both Ann and Patrick are buried in Calvert County.

I am sorry, but I do not have any information on his descendants. My academic employment during 30 years has been in art and architecture. Your collection must be wonderful; and I would love to see it someday. Please let me know, if you find anything.

Isaac FAIRCHILD m. Lucy KILBOURNE in 1797. They are my 3 x great grandparents. As for your question, the answer is "yes". However, he was a "lord" due to land ownership rather than being a member of the peerage. If you wish, we could pursue the question a little further. Are we related?

I agree! Let's compare our notes. As for the inheritance, it has long ago passed back to The Crown.
