My great-grandfather was George Killeen. His grave stone says he was born in 1885 but the 1901 census states 1886. He married Margaret Elizabeth who was born in 1886 and maiden name is Kelly. I really don't have too much more information other than his parents info. I know that some of my grandmothers cousins on the Killeen side, became priests and nuns.

Robert,

You may have already received a reply from me. Not sure if you are the same person who sent me a separate e-mail. Anyway, here is what I know:

Thanks for your reply. I have been helping my husband's family for over a year now trying to research their Killeen ancestry. We have determined that they descend from Michael Killeen and Nora Mead. Michael and Nora are my husband's great-great grandparents.

The church registers for the Parish of Mullagh/Quilty record their children's baptisms as follows, all of whom were born at Craggaknock East.

Winifred - 13 Aug, 1846; Sponsors John & Ellen Meade
William - 16 April, !848; sponsors Michael Conroy & Margaret Meade
Bridget - 15 July, 1852; sponsors William & Winifred Killeen
Michael - 10 Sept, 1854; Sponsors John & Margaret Mead
Thomas - 11 Oct, 1856; sponsors Bryan McMahon & Bridget Crehan
Ellen - 23 July, 1859; sponsors Bryan Mc Mahon & Mary Corry
Elizabeth - 28 Sept 1861; sponsors William Killeen & Bridget Meade
John - 18 June, 1864; sponsors Nora Meade
Margaret - 12 April, 1867; sponsors Margaret & Thomas Kerin

William ( 1848 ) is my husband's great grandfather.

As I researched Michael & Nora's children, Ancestry.com kept leading me to a Michael that went to Australia. I cannot find any other information about him in the county Clare records. I am assuming that he is the brother of our William. Do you have any ship records from when he emigrated to Australia?

I also noticed that you have a copy of Michael's death certificate. Is it possible to send me a copy to research further?

Thank you,
Carol
Hi Carol,

I was just looking last night for the first time in about eight years that you have replied to one of my posts that I put up in 2001. I haven't looked at the family tree stuff in all that time. So I don't know were to start with it all. Michael's parents, according to his death certificate was michael killeen and Laura Mead. I'm starting to wonder If Laura might be Nora? Michael died on 24/07/1924 in Broken Hill, New South Wales, Australia.

Robert

My Killeen relatives are buried in St. Joseph's cemetery in Oil City. Over the years much damage was done to the stones in the plot. On my last trip there I noticed they had been repaired or replaced. I don't know if the church did this or some of the relatives. Would like to correspond with any Killeen descendents still living in this area. abauman@salsgiver.com

I am also related to Patrick Killeen, I am a second cousin to Juananne who posted earlier.

My gggparents were also Bryan Killeen and Sissy Calhoun. I have been trying to locate their records but so far have had no luck. I've also been trying to determine if Sissy was known by another name since I believe Sissy is a nickname. I had run across a Mary Callan, but at this point do not know if that is her.

My ggm was Elizabeth Bridget Killeen b 1870. Her father was Patrick Bunam Killeen b 1826, Clare or Roscommon, Ireland. He arrived in Canada about 1837 and married Catherine Rooney in Quebec, Canada in 1851.

They had eight (or nine) children Bernard Barney, Michael J, Thomas J, Patrick Joseph, Mary Ann, Catherine Judith, Dennis and Elizabeth Bridget (my ggm) and moved to Minnesota about 1863. Patrick died in Stearns Co, Minnesota in 1884 and Catherine died in British Columbia, Canada in 1901 after she have gone there to live with her youngest daughter and her family (my ggm). They was a large community of families that seem to have moved together from Canada to Minnesota and settled together, I don't know if they were connected in Ireland or not. Some of those names are Rooney, Egan, Calahan and Tracy.

Look forward to hearning back from you.

Hi Carol, thankyou for your email. My gg grandfather is William George Killeen b 1839? his father is George & thats all I have from his d/cert. He must have gone to Aust first maybe but was here in NZ about 1873, I know that they came from Ireland and the name Galway and Cork have often been mentioned. When I look up the records in Greymouth (thats were they had the early yrs there is mention of a Michael who I thought mybe a brother (but sometimes I wonder) & I have quite alot of inform on Michael he apparently left Kilmurray County Clare in 1858 he married Elizabeth McMahon. Doesn't look like we are connected but maybe there is some connection, I have had no luck finding out much in Ireland. I sometimes wonder if Michael was a cousin, they were both publicians and owned pubs. I think Michael was lucky in the gold fields, money never seems a problem and there was mention in the past papers on a good strike from the Killeen Party. Hope you can help me maybe???
Many thanks for your reply, from Pauline in New Zealand.

Carol,

Thanks for that. I've had a quick scan of the 1901 census for the Doonbeg townland and electoral district and not found what I wanted. Plenty of Killeens but not the right names and ages. I guess you have found it at http://www.clarelibrary.ie/eolas/coclare/genealogy/1901censu...

My Mother was born in Banagher which is about 130 kilometres from Doonberg according to Google maps - say about 2 days walk.

Am almost through reading Cecil Woodham - Smith's "The Great Hunger" ISBN 0 241 90217 7 It is a must read for you to learn why your ancestors migrated when they did. Mine left Ireland in early 1921. I suspect the politics of the time had something to do with it. That will be another book.

Do let me know if you find a Margaret Mary KILLEEN born around 1886.

By the way my real names are Adrian Patrick. The Patrick must have come from somewhere. Interestingly I have never been called anything but Tim. There will be a Timothy and a Patrick somewhere in the Killeen family I'm chasing.

Best regards.

Tim van der Poel

Hi Tim,

I found a bit more aboutwhere Cloonnagarnaun is. The Clare Heritage Center told me.... " Cloonnagarnaun is a townland ( a townland being the smallest rural division of a Parish ) of approximately 705 acres situated in the old Civil Parish of Killard which is today known as the ecclesiastical Parish of Doonbeg. From the old Ordinance Survey map the townland of Cloonnagarnaun is almost 3 miles north of the village of Doonbeg with part of the townland bordering on the shores of the Atlantic Ocean."

So I guess it's Doonbeg.

Carol

Hi Carol,

I'm replying to your genforum post here. I assume you have checked the genealogy section on www.clarelibrary.ie, it has on-line the Tithes Applotments 1820's, the Griffith Valuations 1855 and the 1901 census. They may help to tie in the Cloongaraun and Craggaknock links.

Re your post, yes Fr Patrick James Killeen 1880-1932 of Ivyhill (aka. Knockaninaun, the anglised verison of the Irish name), Inch Kilmaley, Ennis is my grand uncle and eldest brother of my grandfather Charles KIlleen 1890-1948, their father was Thomas Killeen 1853-1936, the father of Thomas was Patrick Killeen 1804-1884 and before that there was a Charles Killeen 1770's - 1830/40's?, all at the Ivyhill address.

I have been unable to establish a link with any of the Killeen families in West Clare i.e. Miltown Malbay, Mullagh, Doonbeg, Kilrush, where the name is one of the common ones. I believe our family came from West Clare, but any connection predates the records and is lost, although I suspect a link through the common occurance of the christian name Charles with one family in Doonbeg.

Thomas Killeen 1853-1936 had one brother Michael born 1838, who i have been unable to trace and 4 sisters Mary b 1836, Honor b 1842, Bridget b 1845, Kate b 1849. I have some information on Mary and Kate and who they married etc, but nothing on Honor and Bridget.

Patrick Killeen 1804-1884 had two known brothers, DANIEL who married a Margaret McMahon and had 3 sons Charles b 1830, Pat b 1833 and Dan b 1839 AND MICHAEL who married either Anne Kean or eleanor Frawley in 1828-29 in Kilmaley. In addition I suspect that PAtrick may have had another brother James who married Jone Meany in about 1838 again in Kilmaley Co. Clare. (Kilmaley is the parish just west of Ennis town). I suspect the 2 definite brothers and
emigrated and also possibly James in the 1840's, as there is no trace of them beyond 1840.

Sadly I don't think we are connected as I believe our Thomas Killeens are different people. My wife's family also has a Killeen connection to the Killeens in Molesky, Mullagh, but there is no William in that line either.

All the best

PMK
Hi Tim,

The spelling is a bit different now. I found it by spelling it Cloongarnane. I think that what it is. It seems to be east of Doonbeg and west of Ennis. The spelling Cloongarnaun seems to be old back in the 1800s.

My husaband's family are all Roman Catholic and we are in the USA. What I have determined so far is that part of this Killeen family came to the USA, some went to Australia ( I don't know anything about them) and some stayed in Ireland.

If you can let me know anythig about the Australian connection I would appreciate it.

Happy New Year,
Carol

Precious little I know.

Two questions which might help me check connections. Where is Cloongarnaun? Have you spelt it correctly?
Hi,

From which of Michael and Mary's 13 surviving children do you descend?

This quest started for me upon finding the mortuary cards for their son Thomas and his wife, both of whom emigrated from Canada to Wisconsin where they died, in our attic in Ireland.

I am unable to establish a link to date, but have connected traced back to michael's grandfather and met the Irish descendents, who are aware of the link with your family.

Have you any information, which may help establish a link to my Killeen family. Particularly any information/anecdotes on other Killeen's in north america, distant cousins perhaps of Michael, especially a Sr Lawerence (Bridget) Killeen (1898-1986), Matt Killeen (1881-1952) or a Fr Patrick Killeen (1880-1936) who were siblings to my grandfather and born in Ireland but all died in the US. Your Michael b.1841 was an only child).
Hi,

I am not related to this Michael, but the Kilmurry, you mention may be the parish of Kilmurry Ibrickane in West Clare, as the name Killeen and Mead(e) are strongly associated with that area near miltown Malbay. there is also a Kilmurry parish near Sixmilebridge in East Clare, but the name Killeen is found principally in West Clare. Baptismal records there and www.clarelibrary.ie/genealogy may provide more information.

My Honor b.1842 and yours b.1824 are nearly a generation apart, so not the same person.

The parish records here start in 1829, there were a number of Killeen families in Kilmaley, Co. Clare who were baptising kids in the 1829-39 period. Your Honorah could possibly be an elder sibling of mine or one of these other families (having been baptised prior to the records), but we would need more information.

If the land normally stayed with younger sons, then both Dan and Patrick copuld have had older siblings that emigrated. Do the names of Dan, his wife or his children or Patricks middle children, crop up in baptismal godparents or other relatives etc..records. Were there ships records for your Honorah?

Obviously there is more information required to establish if a link exists. Most of the Killeens in Clare, would have been West Clare (West of Ennis town)based over a number of parishes, see www.clarelibrary.ie and click on genealogy where there is a mountain of information and something might "click" there for you. Thank you for the reply. Good Luck.

All the best for now.
PMK

Hi,

I have been unable to establish the canada-ireland connection of this family with my Irish Killeen family, but have established the firm connection between Michael and Mary and his definite irish family. this Irish KIlleen family and my Killeen family have met and have been unable to establish a connection from the records, but if there is one, it I think will pre-date records commencing in ireland. This Killeen family in Ireland are fully aware of the history and connection to Michael and family in Canada as they were visited by and also visited his grandson. The common link being Michael's grandfather, whose name i cannot recall offhand, but have it written down somewhere in the genealogy folder.

i would appreciate any information you have, which may help establish a link to my Killeen family. Particularly any information/anecdotes on other Killeen's in north america, distant cousins of Michael, especially a Sr Lawerence (Bridget) Killeen (1898-1986), Matt Killeen (1881-1952) or a Fr Patrick Killeen (1880-1936) who were siblings to my grandfather and born in Ireland but all died in the US. Or also any Killeens cousins of Michael from an earlier generation, the uncles and aunts of the above (the same generation as Michael b.1841, as michael was an only child).

all the best

PMK

Hi,

Briefly, as i got to leave the PC shortly, but will get back to you on Friday. I just discovered a link to this family recently, due to finding a mortuary card of a son of michael and Mary who died in the Wisconsin in 1961. I am a Killeen based in Co. Clare Ireland and am trying to establish the link with James, Michael and family as per your post. I have information on James b 1806 and Michael born 1841 and his family. Michael was born in ireland but James emigrated when Michael was a child.

Do you have details of any of James and Hannah's other children? Are you sure that James wife was Hannah Connors? I am trying to establish the Ireland-Canada link, which must exist if we had the mortuary card!

All the best

PMK

My Great Great Grand Father Michael Killeen married my GG Grand Mother Mary O'Donnell June 3 1872 in what is now North Adams, Massachusetts. North Adams is located in Western Massachusetts roughly 10 miles from the New York boarder and about 35 miles from AlBany N.Y. After marring, in 1873 my GG Grand Parents moved to Troy New York. Troy like North Adams was a mill town, employing thousands of Irish imagrants but there was one major difference. Troy produced 90 % of the white collars made in America during the 1870 and there was plenty of work available. From my research I've found that the Irish not unlike the imagrants of today folllowed the work. So if your Killeen's were from the western part of Mass you might try looking in New York State. If you are missing a Michael Killeen from your family drop me an email at Tmkilleen@ verizon.net

Good luck
Tom Killeen

My records show that they had 10 children: Michael 1876-1934, Nora 1877-1895, Mary 1879-1881, Thomas Joseph (my husband's grandfather) 1881-1966, Mary 1883-?, William Joseph 1884-1973, Margaret 1885-?, Patrick 1887-1967, John 1889-?.

I see that you have information about Michael 1854-? and that he moved to Austrailia. I would love to correspond with you on behalf of my husband and his sisters. We have been researching the Killeen side of the family for quite a while now and have a lot of puzzle pieces left.

Looking forward to hearing from you,
Carol
Hi Tim,

I guess that's a possibility. We know that William, Thomas and Michael came to the USA. Thomas in 1903, William ?, and Patrick much earlier. I also think Patrick went back to Ireland in 1919 after his father Williams passed to help settle the estate according to a passport I found on-line. Michael died in Ireland so we assume he stayed once he went back. We have no information about the other siblings but to me it seems that the 10 siblings went different ways. Some to the USA, some to Ireland and some stayed in Ireland.

Whatever information you have will help.

Merry Christmas,
Carol

Killeen in County Clare or County Cork

I am researching my husbands maternal ancestry and wish to find where his grandparents and great grandparents were from. William Killeen and Nora Obrien ( both born around the 1850's I guess, had 3 sons that emigrated to Jersey City NY between 1899 and 1903. The brothers are Michael (1878), Thomas Joseph (1880) and William (1884). I think they may have had a sister, Bridget. According to Michael's passport, he went back to Ireland in 1919 to settle his father's estate. His mother was still alive at that time.

Hi, Micheal and Mary would be my great-great-grandparents. I don't have too much info on them myself, just bits and parts. If you look at the 1901 census for Ontario they are listed there in the burgess (north) township.
