Re: DNA Sale for new participants

> What is involved in taking this DNA test?

When he receives the kit, he will need to wait until it
has been 1 hour since he last ate or drank anything, then
open the pouch the brush is sealed in, using scissors
then with the brush, swab the inside of his mouth fairly
vigorously (but not nearly so much as to make your mouth
bleed) brushing against the inside of the cheek between
the lower gums & upper gums. The brush is a soft smooth
felt brush which should soak up the many loose dead cells
from inside of the mouth. After 1 minute of rubbing, you
open the little vial of liquid & push the brush tip off
its handle & into the vial & screw the vial lid back on
the little bottle.

There are 2 more brushes & two more vials. He is to wait
at least 4 hours for more dead cells to accumulate & he
must be that he has not eaten nor drank within an hour
then he may collect the 2nd batch of loose dead cells.
Then he will wait a final 4 or more hours & collect the
final set of dead cells.

What I recommend is that he collect his 1st vial when he
gets up in the morning before he eats or drinks & then
waits until the next morning when he gets up to collect
the 2nd sample. That 24 hours is 4 times the minimum
required wait time for dead cells to accumulate & means
that as soon as you take your sample you are free to eat
& drink all day long without thought of abstaining for an
hour to take a mid-day sample. So I am recommending
taking 3 days to take the sample -- taking each sample
when he gets up.

The final thing to do is sign the green release form to
allow his sample's results to be compared to others'
results.

Then take it to the post office & pay for it to be
mailed. The envelope addressed to Family Tree DNA was
enclosed with the kit when it arrived at your brother's so
he does not have to find an envelope & address it to
Family Tree DNA. I recommend paying for a tracking ID,
but no insurance. The last one I mailed (Aug. 15 2009)
costs $1.22 1st class parcel 1 oz. & 80 cents tracking =
$2.02.

An invoice (bill) may be enclosed if you did not pay for
it online. If so, then payment would have to be
enclosed with the 3 vials of DNA.

Did I answer all your questions? Phone if you have
further questions.

Best regards, James W. Green III 803-635-9236
DNA Sale for new participants

KILLIANs of all spellings (Celtic & Germanic),
and descendants of same,

There is a sale on DNA testing at FTDNA (Family Tree DNA).
The sale is on new kits (new tests), not upgrades. I
expect a sale on upgrades in Jan. or the Spring.

Here below are the 2 kits (2 analysis) on sale. For the
Killian project, we need males who carry the surname
Killian, Killion, Kilian, Killeen, etc. If you are not
a Mr. Killian (of some spelling), then please find your
closest relative named Mr. or Master Killian and ask him
if he will take the test if you pay for it. Perhaps you
can get him to share the cost. When you order the kit,
you will get the kit#. When ordering the kit, input your
email address & after his results come back, you will be
emailed the password to login & view your results -- the
results of your most recent common ancestor with your
Killian relative that provided the DNA for you.

Here are the sale ("promotional") prices:

Y-DNA37 – promotional price $119 (reg. price $149)
Y-DNA67 – promotional price $209 (reg. price $239)

Orders for the above tests need to be placed and paid for by December 31, 2009 to receive the sale price.

To order, go to
http://www.familytreedna.com/group-join.aspx?Group=Killian

and scroll down to the blue bar labeled:
"MALE LINE TESTING - FOR GENEALOGY AND ANTHROPOLOGY "
and select Y-DNA37 or Y-DNA67. We hope that you will
select Y-DNA67 since it gives results for 67 markers &
we need the extra 30 marker values to have enough
different marker values (mutations) to have a hope of
distinguishing between lines (branches) of Killian kin.
If you can only afford 37, please do that & try to
upgrade during the next sale. Maybe you can get your kin
to help with the cost in return for sharing the password.

Be sure to order the kit within a surname project or you
will not get the cheapest sale prices -- the above sale
prices. If you follow the above link, you will be on the
right page to see the above prices. DO NOT click on
"products" to order or you will pay more for the same
product (test).

You probably do not need to test anyone if you have a
2nd cousin or closer kinsman already tested. You can see
who has tested by reading the lineages in the Killian DNA
table in the Killian book, which was first sold at the
reunion this year. The DNA table is on page 166-167. A
similar table with shortened lineages is at:
http://www.familytreedna.com/public/killian_andreas/default....

If that is not enough information, contact Cheryl Killian
at fbcheryl@charter.net or me or Mac Hays.

There are 2 mtDNA tests also on sale & if interested in
that, contact me for advice before ordering.

Remember, you must have the agreement of your test subject
& his snail address & pay for it by Dec. 31, so hurry.
There will be a lot of busy people as we get closer to
Thanksgiving & Christmas, so start working on this now.
Maybe the test will be their Christmas present, but I
recommend you NOT make it a surprise, because they might
surprise you by refusing to take the test.

Best regards,
James W. Green III
803-635-9236
BroomDNA@Juno.Com
my husband Andrew Killian and his family are firmly rooted in east Kent. His father was Andre Killian and his mum Kathleen Killian they had six children. We are the only family members to move north but wondered if they could have come from Yorkshire sometime in the past?

Joseph M Killian and Edwin S. Killian/Boston and Michigan

ALLEGAN GAZETTE January, 1906
Allegan, Michigan

DEATH'S SUDDEN CALL,
JOSEPH M. KILLIAN PASSES OVER
He succumbed to Pneumonia-Was One of Allegan's Pioneer Business Men-He will be buried by Masons.

News of the death of Joseph M. Killian last Wednesday morning carried with it a shock to the people of this village, many of who had seen him so lately in his place of business or about town. A week ago last Thursday he felt bad and remained at home during the day. Business pressed him, and as he felt somewhat improved Friday morning he went to his store. He worked until three o'clock in the afternoon when he took a cab and went home. Pneumonia developed rapidly and he died at two o'clock Wednesday morning.
Mr. Killian was one of six of the oldest business men of this village, having settled here in the spring of 1869. He was born in Boston Jan. 17, 1845. When young he was "bound out" to his uncle, the late John M. Jennings of Grand Rapids, to learn the trade of tailor, the term being seven years. Before the time had expired young Joseph ran away, but his location was learned and he was obliged to return to Boston. Mr. Killian came to Michigan with Mr. Jennings and during several years lived in Kalamazoo, from which place he came to Allegan.
While in Kalamazoo he cultivated the acquaintance of Miss Ettie Bassett, whom he married in June, 1874, and who died six years ago. In that city he also became acquainted with Miss Fannie Sherwood who is now the surviving widow, marriage having taken place Nov. 7, 1904 (3) in Kalamazoo. By his first marriage he became the father of two sons, Ned B. Killian, principal of the Leadville (Colo.) high-school, and Dan Arnold Killian, instructor in athletics in the university of Louisiana at Baton Rogue.
Mr. Killian was a number of years an active member of the Allegan fire department; he had been a member of Allegan lodge F. and A. M. since 1872, and held membership in Eureka chapter R. A. M. and Hermione lodge K. of P., and N. P. L. During many years he had been member of the Episcopal church. Politically he was a Democrat, by which party he was elected clerk of of this village in the spring of 1877, and so well did he perform the duties assigned him that he was retained until 1888 when John F. Dryden became his successor. He was correspondent for several state newspapers many years and by this means became known extensively. In his demeanor he was cordial and genial which made for him many friends, and seldom indeed has death in our village called forth so many sincere expressions of regret or sorrow.
The funeral will be from the late home of DeLano St. tomorrow afternoon. Rev. Wilfred Linsay, acting for Rev. Wm. Lucas of the Church of the Good Shepherd, will read the service, and Allegan lodge F. and A. M. will conduct the ceremonies in Oakwood Cemetery.
Ned B. Killian arrived last night from Leadville and Arnold Killian is expected this morning from the south.

Allegan Gazette
December 14, 1874

Mr. Edward S. Killian died of typhoid fever, last Wednesday evening at the Chaffee House after an illness of two weeks. The deceased was a brother of Mr. J. M. Killian, was twenty years of age, and had resided in Allegan for several years. His death was sudden and unexpected. He was known as a young man of good habits and pleasing address and was the universal favorite of a large number of friends and acquaintances to all of whom, and especially the younger portion of them, his early death has brought deep regret or heartfelt sorrow. In business he was honest and obliging and in his social life he was kind, gentlemanly and agreeable. The services, which were held at the Chaffee House Thursday evening were largely attended. His remains were taken to Boston, for burial were his parents reside.

Note: His death certificate states his name as Edwin S. Killian.[killian family tree.FTW]

May also have brothers, Richard A. and Thomas F. Killian

I can not go back any further that my gggrandfather John H. Killian with any certainty.
Harry Killian who married Katherine Coyle can't be the son of Anthony and Elizabeth Easterday Killian. Their son Harry was born in about 1904 per the 1910 US census. The other Harry was born 5 Jul 1892/3 per his WWI and WWII draft registrations. I'm doing some research for Greg Killian-we went to high school together. I'm still trying to find his parents, Harry and Sophia Koch Killian in 1900.

In your search for your Andrew Killian who married Pennina Lashater, you may come across info indicating that your Andrew was the son of Jacob Killian, who was the son of John Killian, who was the son of Pioneer Andreas Killian. THIS IS NOT TRUE. I descend from both this Andrew and his sister Susannah (children of Jacob, son of John, son of Andreas). I also grew up in this community and attended the same church. Census records, Will abstracts, Tax Lists, Church records and tombstones in Salem Lutheran Church in Lincolnton, NC (not to mention my own family history) indicate that my Andrew Killian (died Dec. 30, 1861 at the age of 61y 1m 24d) married Susannah Moody and lived and died in this community of NC. Hope this keeps you on the right track....

There is no proof of Hans Kilian (one L in Germany) being a ancestor of Andreas Kilian who settled in North Carolina circa 1745. Ancestry's One World Tree is a compilation of many submissions, not many of which are reliable regarding early Killian generations.

See:

http://familytreemaker.genealogy.com/users/k/i/l/Ed-R-Killia...

And the Related Files at:

http://familytreemaker.genealogy.com/users/k/i/l/Ed-R-Killia...

It seems to me that the Killians could surely be found as church records, if they were not destroyed or rotted, were pretty diligently updated.
Anybody?
K

Hi Ed, I appreciate the heads up about Hans Killian. Our Killians are decendents of Matheus Killian who remailed in Pennsylvania. Can you verify any of the ancestry prior to Andreus, Matheus and Heinrich. I have a document copied from the LDS Library in Salt Lake City...not an original such as census, marriage, Land etc. Anyway, it was supposidly written by Cletus H. Killian 1891-1962 and lists the names on the One World Tree. Anna Dorothea Warnburger is listed as Johannes Phillip Wolfgang Killian's last wife and her sons are tentatively given as listed above.
I guess my question is, do you know of any verifying records to this supposition?
K

Re: Looking for decendents of Bernard Killian of Staten Island, NY

Bernard Doran Killian headed an ill-fated Fenian attempt to occupy Campo Bello Island in the Bay of Fundy in Canada in April 1866. This was an action by the New York wing of the Fenian Brotherhood in an attempt to occupy Canada and gain favor with the US Government. Ownership of this small island was in dispute with the British and they actually thought this was a good idea. Obviously, the raid was an expensive, colossal failure and wound up bankrupting and discrediting John O'Mahoney's wing of the Fenian Brotherhood. (I'm an Irish history buff, and know this simply because my last name does not come up in history very often). I do not know what became of Bernard.

My source is a book entitled The Fenians in Context. Irish Politics and Society 1848-82. R.V. Comerford. Wolfhound Press, Dublin. 1985. The story referencing Bernard appears on page 132. You may be able to find a copy on line. I believe the author is quite active in preserving Irish history and culture.

You may want to look at a posting for Bartholomew J. Killian, who was Bernard's brother. I was corresponding with the poster a month or so ago, and she has some terrific information.
I have been tracking my husband's Irish ancesters through family letters from the mid-1850s...[I recently finished transcribing 500+ pages of documents...] One of my husband's original ancestors in the US was Mary KILLIAN who came to the US in 1853.. Mary had a ton of brothers & sisters who funneled through NY City and settled in upstate New York... One brother was named Bartholomew KILLIAN... The family referred to him as Bartle... Other siblings who came to the US were Matthew, George, Bryan, Bernard, & Catherine - all at different times, but all settling near Syracuse & Buffalo areas. From what I have gathered so far, their parents were named Bartle KILLIAN & Catherine FLYNN who lived west of Dublin.. [the letters speak of the ice on the Grand Canal and the Wicklow Mountains...] A few siblings remained in Ireland - Mary's brother Patrick KILLIAN was a Jesuit priest who taught at Clongaweswood College & is buried on the grounds there...Anne was sickly & probably died in Ireland... John was a farmer... Peter was a stone mason who worked on several churches throughout Ireland... I do not believe Peter or John ventured to the US... I have not found the immigration records for Bartle -but several letters mention him...

I would be willing to share what information that I have...And, should our Bartle not be the one you are seeking, I would be interested in learning what you have perhaps discarded in the search for your Bartholomew....

Oh, we are particularly uneasy with e-mail from unknown sources, so please note in any response that this is in reference to a family research question...

Deborah Tangren
padebramma@msn.com

http://www.archive.org/stream/new7a8proceedings07newjuoft/ne...

PROCEEDINGS OF THE NEW JERSEY HISTORICAL SOCIETY, A MAGAZINE OF HISTORY, BIOGRAPHY AND GENEALOGY. THIRD SERIES. VOLUME VII.

1912-1913.

ANNUAL REPORT OF CORRESPONDING SECRETARY.

Mrs. Laura Wyker Heaton, of 737 Wood Street, Vineland, N. J., wrote that her ancestor, Henry De Killian, a French Huguenot, whose first wife and three children were massacred in France, escaped with one daughter to America, and settled on the Raritan River, in New Jersey, and there built a grist mill, which was washed away by a flood in 1732; he rebuilt it, but it was again washed away by another flood in 1734. He then became disgusted with the place, abandoned it, and went to Tinicum, near Erwinna, Bucks County, Pa., and bought for 20 sterling, five hundred acres on the hills. About 1736 he built a grist mill at the place where now stands the old sawmill built in 1800 by George Wyker. Henry De Killian married a second time, but only her first name, which was Charlotte, is known. Considerable correspondence and investigation were had by the Secretary, the re- sult being negative as to Henry De Killian. His name is not men- tioned in any deed on record, nor is there any memory of him pre-served at New Brunswick. There was a flood at New Brunswick in February, 1733. The probability is that De Killian was employed by somebody else in the mill.

I have just started helping a Killian friend research his family. I have discovered that he is the ggrandson of Bernard Doran Killian through B. Doran's son, John Doran Killian. I could not link to your e-mail address but I think he would be interested in communicating with you. You are right, B. Doran Killian was quite an interesting man. I know my friend would enjoy any more information you may have and locating any living relatives. Please e-mail me separately.

Joy

Thanks for getting in touch. I will try to dig out the information from the family "archives," such as they are, about Bartholomew Killian. As I am away from my primary residenc for 6 weeks, it will be a while before I can post my notes about him. Be patient!

Thank you; I have seen lots of erroneous information posted on-line on the descendants of Andreas. I was pretty sure the Andrew Killian I am looking for was not related, but it really gets confusing trying to sort it all out; there are several Andrews in that time period.
Thanks again; your information DOES help.
