Re: Elias Harris Kimbrell - my line

Hello Jo,
I have just started working on researching the Kimbrell surname. Most of my Kimbrells are known to be in the Searcy Co, Ar. area. My branch comes down through Elias H. Kimbrell's daughter, Margaret J.Kimbrell 1842/6 Ar.- 1913 Searcy, Ar.who married Wm. Z. Duncan 1844 Ky.-1904 Ar. Their son, James Curtis 1869-1914 Ar. married Victoria Chandler (my younger sister is named after her)and they were the parents of 6 children. My deceased grandmother, Beulah B. Horton Duncan married one of those children---Odus C. Duncan. As far as I can tell both of Elias's parents were born in N.C. according to the 1870 U.S. Census. As of this moment I have still been unable to find their names on the internet...have you had better luck? Also, is there Native American blood to follow in the Kimbrell line? I'm also following the Chandler and Griffin lines out...My 93 year old uncle told me there was Indian blood on this side of the family but not where to locate it...he died before I could get back to Ark. to talk to him. He really did know his family history... as well as being a son of the confederacy. Now I'm struggling to pull even the little facts up so any help would be so appreciated. Thank you for your time and help. Marie

Kimbrell family

Colleen, I saw your message about the Kimbrell name and would like to know if maybe you could help me. We are trying to find parents and siblings of Elias L. Kimbrell. He was born about 1853 in S.C. then at some point before 1877 he moved to Walker Co. Ala.U.S.A. In July 1877 he married Mary E.Edwards Taylor in Walker Co. Ala. She already had 3 children when they married from previous marriage to Buck Taylor. They had a son John Osborn Kimbrell 16 May 1878 in Walker Co. We have heard there was one more son born to this couple named Sam, but we haven't found any evidence yet. They moved at some point to Texas, but we don't know where nor when. John Osborn Kimbrell married Mattie Gonce from Aquilla, Texas. Does any of this connect with your family or with Sam's. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated. Clara Kimbrell

Hi, Sandy....see my other notes re: Habersham County. My line went from SC to GA in about 1800....John married Rhoda Rice and that's where I get into things. Rhoda is said to have been a Cherokee or Creek Indian, and was forced to the Trail of Tears in 1818....I need more details, but supposedly she got back to GA and married John and settled in Blue Creek, White County. Send me an email if you want to have me send you my files......

I'd LOVE to have Habersham / White County books to use in research!!!
Re: Texas Kimbrells,etc.

My dad always said the variations in spellings were because of two things: Census takers, bankers, etc. spelled names however they wanted (semi-phonetically) because many men and women back then were at least partially illiterate; and he said OTHERS changed spellings to separate themselves from relatives who were on the "shady" side of things! After years of research, I think he MAY have had it right.

Family legend: Scotland to England to Northern States (I think Massachusetts but I need to double check my files), to VA, to NC, to SC, to GA. Also said that after the Civil War (LOTS of our people fought in the Southern regiments) many moved west to Alabama (still some Kimbrell's there that I need to contact) and then to MS/LA where a couple of brothers formed a well known gang of robbers. Some of that group moved on into Texas and Oklahoma, and others stuck around. Side note on the NM Kimbrells: one of them was the Sheriff that arrested Billy the Kid.

Ship me your email address and I'll try to send you more details on John H.: we share him......he was my great-great- great grandfather. azkimbrell@netscape.net

Pat

I have been reading your postings (and other’s postings)and gleaned a lot of great information. My grandfather was John H. Kimbrell (b) 1880 and married Mary Edwards (b) 1884. I am just now beginning to research our family tree. The information in this message has given me a great start. By now, you probably have a lot more information and have figured more out about your ancestors.

I live in Marietta, Georgia (about 1 ½ hours from Blue Creek). I plan to visit the White County Courthouse/Museum as there are history books available. I also understand there are Habersham County Heritage Books that I will try to locate and research. Any words of wisdom would be greatly appreciated.

Saw your post and am very interested in the Kimbrell line. the names Nettie and Luther are in my line and would like to find more. Luther Henry Kimbrell, Born June 29, 1883 in Georgia. How he got to Alabama is still a mistery. I find him in Chilton/Shelby Co., Alabama. ( he lived on the edge of these counties, so it depends on who made out the records as to which county they used) He Married Florence D. Burnett of Calera Chilton Co. Alabama they were married in Chilton Co. August 5, 1909. Florence was born June 21, 1886 in Chilton Co. Al. They had four children: James Atkins; Odis T.: Luther Roscoe: and Beatrice. L.H. died January 26, 1965 and Florence died June 9, 1949. They are both buried in Rock Springs Cem. West of Calera, in Chilton Co., Alabama

Any help you can give me will be greatly appreciated.

P.S. This Luther Henry is NOT to be confused with the Luther Henry of FAYETTE CO. Al.

Thank you
Sarah Chesnutt

Although I do not recognize any of the names, I thought I would take a chance that you might be able to help me since my Kimbrell like came from Georgia. I am stuck on Luther Henry Kimbrell of Chilton/Shelby Co. Alabama ( not to be confused with the Luther Kimbrell of Fayette, Alabama. I have already been through all of that and find no connection to them.). Luther Henry Kimbrell married Florence D. Burnett also of Chilton Co. they had four children, James Atkins, Odis T., Roscoe L. and Beatrice. Beatrice married a Brackin.

I am stuck on Luther Henry, cannot find him in any census records. He was Born June 29, 1883 in Georgia and died in Alabama in on January 26, 1965 Chilton Co. I cannot find his father nor mother. Could you possibly have any info on this person to get me over this brick wall I have run into.

Thank you.

Sarah Chesnutt

hey cousin, are you still out there. I have found alot of info over the past few years. My great grandfather Edgar A. Kimbrell was your Grand father Mart Howard Kimbrell's Brother. I spent time with him until he died in the mid 1970's He told me about moving from Kentucky to Wingate, Coal Creek, Montgomery county, Indiana with his parents when he was 7 years old. His younger brothers Mart and John were born after the move to Indiana. He talked to me about both of his brothers, his parents, and Eliza's parents (the Howards). Grant Kimbrell's mother was Tempy J Burton. born 1837 in Kentucky. She married William curtis before she married John Brown Kimbrell. I have all of the info back to England on the Kimbrell line and I know most of the family history from the Kimbrell old-timers that I was around when I was growing up in Indiana not far from Wingate. kenneth_kimbrell@yahoo.com

Wold anyone happen to know who the parents of John Kimbrell were? He married Mary Ann Gowan and they had the following children:
Boyd Benjamin...m. Lillie Mae Moseley
Alta Myra or Alta Mirrie m. an Abernathy?
James Talmadge
Dessie
Venie m. a Roberson?
Alonzo m. Dolly Thrift
Ola m. Austin Cantrell

John Kimbrell died 1910 and is buried in Buck Creek Baptist Church Cemetery. His widow Mary Ann Gowan Kimbrell later married Fred Abernathy (also buried at Buck Creek).
They had 2 children.
Mary Ann Gowan Kimbrell Abernathy is also buried at Buck Creek between her 2 husbands.

It appears that the Kimbrells often intermarried with the Cantrells in this area.
Buckner Kimbrell, wife Patsy

I have tried to read through all the listings for "Buckner Kimbrell" on this message board. I seldom found anyone who listed a date with this name. So for me it would be hard to put together a family for him, if I don't have a date.

Do any of you have the family bible record for Stephen Kirk where he lists his father-in-law as Buckner Kimbrell who died 10 Jul 1830 and that his mother-in-law was Patsy Kimbrell who died 29 May 1818?

Do any of you have the estate record for this man listed in the Stanly County, North Carolina Settlement of Estates 1841-1854? On page 54 of this court record is written the divison of lands for the estate of Buckner Kimball. His heirs listed, who were to receive his lands were:
Stephen KIRK wife is Patsy Kimbrell
George CROWELL Esq. think his wife is Martha Kimbrell
William CROWEL, Sr. (who was earlier in the census listed as Jr.) Think his wife is Mourning Kimbrell.
Harris KIMBALL's heirs
Sarah WOODS's heirs

No other heirs are listed for this man.

This document was dated on the 11th day of April 1842 and filed in the May Sessions of Stanly Co. Court by D. Hearne, Clerk.

I will be glad to share this information with anyone who wants it. Contact me at linajaneboyd@hotmail.com

My connection is through Stephen Kirk's brother Daniel KIRK who married into my FORREST family.

Stephen Kirk also has a will filed in Stanly Co. NC.
I have heard that lore in my family as well, regarding the various spellings of Kimbrell/Kimball/Kimbul and so on. I am a ggg granddaughter of Elias Harris Kimbrell b. 1809 either KY or NC, thru his son William Franklin Kimbrell, thru his son Nathaniel Baxter Kimbrell, thru his daughter Nettie Jane Kimbrell Lay, thru her daughter Helen Marie Lay Dalgleish. Have not found Elias's parents, although I suspect that a Harris is involved. Elias married Malinda Thompson in Perry Co., TN. The family eventually removed to Kimbrell Creek, Searcy Co., ARK where they remained for the rest of their lives. I have visited their homestead site, and it is pure "wilderness" with the forest and nature having taken over the area! But, it is beautiful in it's own way. I do not know the relationship to the SC, & GA Kimbrells, and would sure like to find out if there is a connection. Please contact me. I have lots of info. on my line to share, and hope that you will share with me. Thanks!
