Kimbrough as a middle name

Surnames: Kimbrough, Gregory
I have a Bee Kimbrough Gregory, born 1867 Athens, Tennesse, according to a tree drawn by his deceased granddaughter. Yet I can not find any census for him before 1900. I am wondering why he would have a middle name of Kimbrough unless he is related to the Kimbrough's of Tennesse. Yet, I can not find a marriage between any Gregory and Kimbrough. Does anyone recognize my relative?
