Plumley (aged 76) as mother in law. I am suspecting, but have no confirmation, the SJ Kimery on this census- the son of JW and ML is my gg grandfather. Interesting isn't it?

Steve Hill, This is terribly confusing isn't it? If your grandmother's name was Cimmerer and she came to this country after 1800, it seems there are Kimery/Kimreys who are not all descendants of Heinrich Kimber who came in in mid1700's. I had always thought the Kimery/Kimery name came only from the original. ls

Actually, my grandmother's surname was Cimmerer - it was other family members who changed the spelling of the name.

If there is a match here, it's pretty far-removed. My grandmother's anscestors (all originally spelled Cimmerer) came from Germany between 1806 and 1836.

Re: Kimery/Kimrey

I received this information from Jim Kimery. John Henry(b.1842) - probably my great grandfather - is son of Simpson (b.) 1818; son of Peter (b. 1792 N.C.) died 1864 Schuyler County, IL. Peter's father was Henry (b. 1755 N.C.). Henry's father is Heinrich Kimber (b. 1733 Germany).
I have memories of going to Schuyler cemetery on memorial Day when I was a small child. Unfortunately my grandfather, James Henry was the youngest son of John Henry and was brought up by a stepmother and a stepfather. My father, Harold Lester was also the youngest son - I didn't know any other Kimerys as I was growing up in Mattoon, Coles County, IL. There was a Paul Kimrey family in town and I later met Paul Kimrey, Jr. - last I heard he lived in Mendota, IL. Is your family ery or rey now? Paul Kimrey, Jr. had several children but I know the names of only the first two - Thomas and Catherine. I believe it was in the late 1960's-early 70's when I saw a article in the Mattoon Journal Gazette regarding either a David or a Donald Kimery being sentenced to prison. I hope some this provides you with clues to your cousins.

I have a branch of my family tree with several different spellings of the surname KIMREY.

CIMMERER, KIMMERER, KIMMERY, KIMREY, KIMRY

My particular branch of this family has been traced to SAMUEL CIMMERER SR., born 1838 in upstate New York and died 1908 in Michigan. On 4/09/1857 he married THURSA MARTIN in Erie County, New York.

Does anyone here have any connection to this family, or know anything about the different spellings?

Hi, Linda,
I'm curious about the Sol Kimery in the census. My g-g-grandfather was Solomon Kimery (although it's spelled Kimrey on his tombstone), who was b. 1811 in N.C.
In 1840, he was in Washington Co., TN; in 1850, he was in Murray Co., GA; in 1860, he was in Marion Co., AL; and by 1870, he was in Tippah Co., MS. I have no clue as to where he was prior to 1840.
Do you have any information on your Sol Kimery?
Peggy Kimery Mitchell

My ancestor Peter Kimery/rey was born in North Carolina 1791 and moved with his family to Indiana and Illinois. Two of his sons, Simpson and David Kimery moved together to Neoga, Cumberland Co, IL while Peter moved on to Schuyler Co, IL with his remaining family. He and his wife Barbary died there and all the children are listed in the sale of the estate property. My ancestor was the third son, Daniel, who moved with his family to Vernon Co, MO. I am looking for more info about my ancestor by trying to find my cousins in Neoga, IL. I have hit the brick wall with Peter, but believe he may be the son of Henry Kimery of Germany. Any info that can be shared about Neoga relatives (Simpson or David) would be appreciated. ipeitz1@aol.com

For Peggy Mitchell's inquiry. The 1850 census for Coles/Cumberland Counties in Illinois listed both a Sol and an Ira Kimery as residents. If I remember correctly Ireland was given as the place of birth. This is on file at the Newberry Library in Chicago.

Kimery/Kimrey

I was born Linda Kimery in Coles County, IL. The name in the USA was always Kimery. My grandfather was James (Henry?) Kimery. There is a cemetery in Cumberland County, IL, southeast of Neoga with both ery's and rey's. Most graves belong to the Kimerys. If your family spells the name "rey" they most likely did a stint in IL since this is where the name "split" occurred during an argument between 2 brothers. Some original gravestones were replaced with the "rey" spelling. I have 5th cousins who are "rey". they grew up in Coles County, IL as did I. Kimerys are listed in the 1850 Coles/Cumberland census as being from Ireland by way of NC. Two names I recall are Sol and Ira. Hope this helps.

cemetery southeast of neoga, il is longpoint. any records check should include both cumberland as well as coles counties in illinois. i can't remember the name of the person who keeps the cemetery records but he used to live in a farmhouse adjacent to the cemetery - i believe his father was a kimery but he has a different name. neoga is a small town and anyone at the barbershop or gas station can provide directions to the cemetery if you decide to go there. both kimerys and kimreys are buried in this cemetery. ada's relatives could now be kimrey even if she was a kimery. some of the gravestones washed out many years ago and when the stones were replaced, the descendants replaced them with the changed spelling. the newberry library in chicago keeps census records and would be a possible source. my great grandfather was john henry kimery born in indiana, died in illinois and my grandfather was james henry kimery born in cumberland county illinois(b. circa 1878) and died in coles county, illinois in 1939.
my direct e-mail is stormchicago@earthlink.net. sorry i can't help you with ada but you may want to try anderson's in mattoon, il.

Kimery/Kimrey

My surname is Kimery. I have long thought the name was changed from a "C" to a "K" in the U.S. In the Longpoint Cemetery in Neoga, IL there are Kimery and Kimrey graves. I have a 5th cousin who is an "rey". The story handed down in my family (and his) is the name started (at least in Illinois) as Kimery. Two brothers (twins, I believe) had adjoining farms and argued about the use of a threshing machine at harvest. The brother who lost the argument changed the spelling to "rey". The Coles/Cumberland County 1850 census shows a Sol and Ira Kimery born in Ireland and lived in NC before IL. There is also a farmhouse owned by a (now) Kimrey on the national historical registry in Cumberland County, IL having been built in 1840.
