We'll try this again. In the past two entries I assumed this Kimmel family was from Philadelphia--NOT SO. Manny's family is from New York. So, here's the correct family summary. It is built around the 1920 census and Newark city directories, so the detail CANNOT be considered reliably accurate. All years are estimates taken from the 1920 census:

Father: Charles J. Kimmel, born Austria ca. 1870, Jewish, immigrated 1873, raised in New York, naturalized 1896, moved to Newark with wife and family about 1916, shoemaker by trade with his own shop, died about 1926.
Mother: Lena, born Romania ca. 1882, Jewish, immigrated 1908.
Children, all born in New York: Emanuel (ca. 1898), Edward (1899), Mollie (1901), Dorothy (1902), Eva (1903), Samuel (1909).

Again, consider the dates above as ESTIMATED from the census, not documented true. Names do match those discussed in this thread.

Emanuel/Manuel/Manie E.'s wife Pauline listed in city directories as Sectretary-Treasurer of Washington Parking Co. beginning 1931. Kim Parking Stations Inc. established in late 1930's, headed by Manuel & Pauline Kimmel and Manuel & Elizabeth Rosenstein.

Can anyone provide the maiden names of wives Lena and Pauline?

Nice to hear from you. Your mother and I email all the time. Hard to get info. Have tried Ellis Island, but not much luck. I know the family came from Austria, but locating the ship and date and departartion dates are difficult. Many changed their names when they arrived. Your grandfather Sammy and his wife Beatrice and I were very close when they lived in Watsonville, Ca. Charlie and I were close also. Saw him last in NY for dinner about ten years ago. He was a lovely man, and I was shocked at his passing. I could tell u some funny stories about Sammy. He was something else!
Have your Kimmels ever gone by the surname Kimline or Kimelheim? That's the spelling in the 1910 and 1930 census records I'm sure applies to this family. 1910, 1920 & 1930 censuses are summarized here, birth years are estimated:

Father Louis (1884 Galica prov. Austria, Yiddish)
Mother Ethel (1885 Hungary, Yiddish)
Children: Eva (1907), Helen (1909), Samuel (1914), Lillian (1916), Emanuel ("Manny," 1919), Edward (1922), Theodore (1929)...(more?) and one child born prior to 1910 who died young.

I have seen examples of Kimmels over their 300 year history in America whose name was spelled "Kiemel," "Keimel" or "Kiemele" at one time or another. Also "Kimmele," "Keemle" and "Keehmle." One family in the U.S. first used the spelling Kimmel and later Kiemel. An earlier spelling of the name is Kümmel ("u" with an umlaut over it) and most families replaced the "ü" with "i", "u", "ei", "ie," "ue, or "ee." If you are tracing your Kiemele family in Germany, you might need to look at all of these alternate spellings.

I came across this yesterday at the genealogy library in Fort Wayne: "Unlocking Locke, Locke Township, Ingham County, Michigan," compiled in 1998 by Donna Dansby Heminger and published by the Ingham County Genealogical Society. On pages 337-338 she has the family record for Clatus and Julia "Kimel," with sources of information from local records at the end. It has Abraham's full name his wife's maiden name and the birth years for daughters Cynthia and Julia Elizabeth.

The book should be in any genealogy section of libraries in Ingaham, Shiawassee and Livingston Counties. I'm glad to have helped.

Clatus Kimmel and Julia E. Doolittle married 1852 in Hancock County, Ohio. They moved to Ingham County, Michigan about 1869. Of their children--John, Joseph, Brilliant, Abraham, Amelia, Charles, Albert, Grant, and Willard--I know John ended up in Shiawasee County and Grant in nearby Livington County. Brilliant married William Allen. I do not know what happened to Clatus and Julia or the other children.

Clatus was born about 1832 in Harrison County, Ohio to "John" Henry Kimmel and Maria "Eva" Turney, who were married in that county in 1813.

John Kimmel was born in Somerset County, Pennsylvania in 1787 to Leonard John Kimmel and Susanna Zimmerman. He was baptised at the Reformed and Evanglical Lutheran Church of Berlin in that county.

History books for Harrison County, Ohio say Leonard Kimmel was born in Germany in 1741 and came to America in 1758. I know he was living in Charlestown, Chester County, Pennsylvania in 1777. He first appears in Elklick Township, Somerset County tax lists in 1786, moved to Greene Township, Washington County in 1790, then to Monongalia County, (West) Virginia in the late 1790s, and finally moved to Rumley Township, Harrison County, Ohio in 1807 where he died in 1825. No one has yet discovered where in Germany Leonard was born.

I am struggling with sorting out the Kimmel's- lots of Abraham's out there and none that seem to connect with mine. I have a Great Grandmother- Cynthia Kimmel b 1889 Michigan, daughter of Abraham and Louisa Kimmel. I can confirm parents names from her marriage record and census. From what I have gathered her father Abraham appears to have been born in Ohio abt 1862-66 and Louisa (last name unk) abt 1856 in MI. One record indicates that Abraham's father was from Germany, mother from NY.

Kenney and Jennie Kimmel were living in Harrison Townhip, Kingfisher County, Oklahoma in the 1910 federal census. They were 9 months into their marriage. In the same county was Allen Kimmel whose household included his mother Georgia A. Hartley, formerly Georgia Ann Barbee, once the wife of Allen William Kimmel (married Sumner County, Kansas in 1886). Also living with him was his grandmother Eliza Hartley (a censustaker's error, actually Kimmel),who was Eliza Caroline Whitlock widow of William Kimmel. William and Eliza and family appeared in the 1880 census in Jackson Township, Sumner County, Kansas.

So Kingfisher County, Oklahoma and Sumner County, Kansas appear to be the places to look for the birth record and marriage record of Kenney Kimmel of Creek County, Oklahoma (1920 & 1930 censuses).

Let me know what you find...Tim Kimmel

They can be found in books or on microfilm in genealogy societies in Somerset County, PA or in the genealogy collections at Salt Lake City or Fort Wayne. Details can be supported by census and cemetery records of the Stoyestown area.

Kimmel info for you and for Jack if he is still tracking this: Catharine Kimmel, wife of William Beckwith, was a daughter of John Kimmel and Mary Ann "Polly" Shroad. The family was living in the Spencer County when Catharine married. They were members of the nearby Little Pigeon Baptist Church.

John and Polly married in 1808 in Logan County, Kentucky. The family moved to Union Co., Illinois before moving to Spencer Co., Indiana. They were in Warrick Co., Indiana next. Polly likely died in Indiana and John moved the unmarried children back to Union Co., Illinois.

Hi Gloria,

Your post is a few years old, so maybe you have had some success since then. I have a copy of a newspaper article where Kenny Gray Kimmel passed away May 28th 1933. He was born October 30th, 1886 to Mr. and Mrs. A.W. Kimmel at Perth, Kansas. Looks like Jennie's maiden name was McMahan and they were married in 1908 in Liberal, Kansas. William Harrison was born October 21st, 1911. William Kimmel was my grandfather. // John
