Coroner's Inquest Reveals a Horrible Cesspool of Crime in Heart of Philadelphia

Philadelphia, July 7 - Sensational testimony was offered
today at the coroner's inquest in the case of Dong Soo, a
Chinaman who died from gunshot wounds received during a
factional fight in Chinatown on the night od July 4. Lee
Toy, who was long known as the "Mayor of Chinatown,"
testified that at a recent meeting of a band of "Highbinders,"
several men were marked for assassination, among them Rev.
Frederick Poole, an Episcopal missionary who is located in
the Chinese district. Mr Poole was shot during the
disturbance on July 4, and is now in a hospital. Lee Toy
stated that the murders were to be committed during the
celebration of Independence day. He further testified that
he saw Yung Gow shoot at Dong Soo.


Yung Gow, Mok Kin and Yun Why Joe were committed without
bail to await the action of the grand jury.

Since the shooting representatives of the Hip Sing Tong
and On Ox Leong Long factions have signed a peace compact.
