Kincheloe is an Americanized spelling of of a Scottish or Irish name which had been evolved in those early days for only one family.....
----
Early researchers into American KINCHELOE ancestry were aware of the record above of marriage of Hugh Kinselo to Marion Haley
but found no confirmation that Hugh was father of CORNELIUS KINCHELOE ...
They did find records that CORNELIUS was father of John ... and record of John having married and obtained records of names of most of John's 11 children.
Proof is cited in this book that nearly all listed in this book descend from CORNELIUS most of them through this son, John, others through a grandson, Peter KINCHELOE ... apparently a son of CORNELIUS, probably CORNELIUS, Jr.
On available records these early researchers apparently accepted CORNELIUS KINCHELOE as the immigrant ancestor.
----
From 8 years research to publish the genealogical book,
The Holcomes (Harcums) 1947, immigrants to Northumberland County,Virginia
by compiler's wife it was learned that as early as 1660 there was about us dense a population of immigrant families there from England as in any early Virginia county.
-----
Cornelius KINCHELOE is recorded in Richmond County,Virginia on December 6,1693, in 1694 & June 26,1695 as planter living on own land on Totuskey Creek,North Farnham Parish,Virginia...
This part of Richmond County had been in old Rappahannock County,Virginia until it was abolished in 1632.
---
Old Rappahannock County had been taken from Lancaster County,Virginia & Lancaster from Northumberland & York Counties,Virginia in 1651.
Whether or not the Totuskey Creek land owned and occupied by CORNELIUS KINCHELOE was near a Hugh Kinselo settlement has not been learned.
In this state of information as to the ancestry of CORNELIUS KINCHELOE, the descent of Hugh Kinselo, or the name of the KINCHELOE immigrant to American Colonies compiler prefers, in publishing a book for general circulation to leave the reader free to decide, or pursue further research before deciding.
Cornelius is recorded as "Kinseloe" as witness to will of John Rice proved for record in Richmond County,Virginia on December 6,1693.
---
Cornelius KINCHELOE signed as surety on a bond in the sum of 10,000 pounds of tobacco Richmond County,Virginia in 1694.
---
Cornelius KINCHELOE 'Chencello' planter of North Farnham Parish, Richmond County,Virginia took deed June 26, 1695 from Shadrach Williams for 100 acres on the west side of Totuskey Creek ' along the line of said Chenchello . . . adjoining land of William Smith, ... along KINCHELOE Spring Branch.'
---
Totuskey Creek flows from its source near Rainswood, southeasterly by north and then due south 'the west side' could mean either bank.
---
Of this land 90 acres was sold by deed dated June 2,1724 signed by John KINCHELOE, ... in which deed his wife, Elizabeth, joined to Robert Smith, planter, for "6,000 pounds of good tobacco", reciting further: "which land was by Shadrach Williams by deed, June 26,1695 sold and conveyed to CORNELIUS KINCHELOE 'father of the aforesaid John', by whose decease became the proper inheritance in fee-simple of the said John, to whom it descended as heir-at-law to the aforesaid CORNELIUS KINCHELOE.
---
The remaining 10 acres of said original 100 acres had been conveyed by deed dated April. 21,1722 signed by said John KINCHELOE and wife, Elizabeth, for 1,600 pounds of tobacco to William Smith, the location and recitals as to inheritance in it being copied in their deed for the 90 acres next above.
----
The above does not necessarily mean that John KINCHELOE... was the only child or son of CORNELIUS KINCHELOE since inheritance in the American colonies was then according to the English laws by which the oldest son inherited all the father's land to the exclusion of brothers and sisters.
It was called "primogeniture". . .
----
The name of the wife of CORNELIUS KINCHELOE and mother of his proven son, John, has not been learned, there being some surmise that her maiden name was Williams. He was surety for Shadrach Williams. . . .
---
The earliest known extensive genealogical research available as to Kincheloes is substantially preserved in this book as made by Saarsfield Austin A. McCarthy ... within about the decade prior to 1916.
---
McCarthy recorded as his conclusion that "The first KINCHELOE in the American Colonies worked at Taylor's Iron Works."
---
Kincheloe came from England; settled at Dumfries,Stafford now Prince William County,Virginia then on Chesepake Bay, now 10 miles inland.
----
Cornelius KINCHELOE,page.5 & son, John of English ancestry' came early to Virginia, being settled in Prince William County,Virginia
The Kincheloes are of pure English unmixed with any other nationality.....
They show an unusual tendency to become farmers to stick to the soil and acquire land. '
They marry the sons and daughters of farmers.
They also have a tendency to move about to occupy the frontier.
This may be due to the fact that they are fond enough of land to want good land not so common in regions they have abandoned . .. .
Their tradition is for education in the home with the family school room and tutor. ...
The Kincheloes have been rural for probably many centuries, ... tradition is strong in them, -doing what their ancestors have done for many generations past. Their ancestors in England must have been, at least, landed gentry for only upper classes in England in their day received any education." (12 page.49)
The entire KINCHELOE family in America in 1694 has a common ancestor.
----
It is not possible to state the exact date of the arrival in Virginia of the progenitor of the KINCHELOE family in America. It is a family tradition that he was of the English gentry class arrived from England about 1670; settled on Occuquan Creek and worked at Taylor's Iron Works....
----
This statement is made on the authority of Mrs. John (Virginia Emily Smith) Mooney Sardis,Tennessee deceased.
The original KINCHELOE immigrant to Virginia was a Cavalier who fought against Cromwell and came to America after this defeat of the loyalists and the death of King Charles I.
He probably landed at Dumfries,Virginia settled on Occuquan Creek and worked at Taylor Iron Works
---
One family tradition is that after the downfall of Charles I the KINCHELOE emigrant fled England to Ireland, where he dwelt some time later leaving Ireland on account of political and re1igious restrictions settling in Virginia....
----
From the time of marriage of John KINCHELOE the dates of his death and births of his children it seems probable that John's father, Cornelias KINCHELOE ... would have been too young to have fought against Cromwell, who died in 1658 and that the soldier was of the generation of the father of Cornelias.
----
The fact that both John KINCHELOE .& John Canterbury, apparently his wife's brother, voted for Lord Fairfax in the election in 1741 showed a leaning toward the nobility at that late date......
---
The cradle of the Kincheloes in the American Colonies apparently was on land owned and occupied by Cornelias KINCHELOE on KINCHELOE Spring Branch of Totuskey Creek in North Farnham Parish,Richmond County,Virginia ....
----
The Kincheloes were known to be Scotch-Irish, old people saying to me that they remembered some of then who had a distinct Scotch accent........ Hector KINCHELOE ....
---
A Scotch family named Low moved to Holland; married a Dutch girl named Kinche. That started the name Kinchelow, KINCHELOE. The family emigrated to Dumfries,Virginia on Chesepeake Bay.....
---
The name, KINCHELOE is of Celtic origin Celts being members of the Aryan race, which includes the ancient Gauls and Britons the Gaelic Scotch, the Irish, the Bretons and the Welsh, but whether Scottish or Irish the name could have had its derivation in either country....
---
It may be certain that the Kincheloe’s came from Britain or Ireland rather than Continental Europe.....
-----
The Christian names of the 11 children of John & Elizabeth 'Canterbury' Kinchloe ... and of the 4 or more known children of Peter KINCHELOE of Peter's sons, Conrad KINCHELOE ..., and Daniel KINCHELOE ... should have weight in deciding the nationality of the KINCHELOE ancestor who was immigrant to the American Colonies. . . .

Two Coats of Arms.
The revised book of Heraldry contains the names of Virginia's first families including the name KINCHELOE with a picture of the coat of arms.
The significance of the coat of arms is derived from the name.
There are two crests on the coat of arms and the shield is quartered,-divided into four parts with four coats of arms, the name Kinche repeated and the name Loach repeated'
---
The name is a compound Scotch word, formed from three old Gaelic words: Geann (pronounced "kin" and meaning 'head of' or 'chief'. Cinnidh, meaning ('of the clan') and Loach (pronounced loe and meaning ' warrior', thus 'Chief Warrior of the Clan'

-----
Kincheloe - Irish origin variant of Ceannsalaige A.D. 400 Neill, last of pagan monarchs of Ireland-
Neill of the Nine Hostages took army to Gaul; was accompanied by Eana Kinsellach, one of his tributary princes,
King of Leinster from whom it is supposed that the Kinsellachs or Kincheloes descend.
-----
Another account is that Eocha, son of Eana Kinsellach killed him.
Later O'Kinsellachs, Baron of Hy-Kinsellachs, now Wexford, belonged to them.
Again, A.D. 959 when a descendant of Neill succeeded him its monarch of Ireland, the King of Leinster was Brandubh,a descendant of Eana Kinsellach and they had an encounter. Brandubh refused to pay tribute to Hugh O'Neill. Battle at Wexford followed. Hugh lost his life.
Ceanncinnidloach - Chief Warrior of the Tribe or Clan.
-----
A branch of the Irish family evidently emigrated to Germany and settled there.
----
The U.S. Census of Richland Co., Camden District, S.C. records a widow Kinsaloc and Herman Kinsaloc.
Descendants of immigrants in U.S.A. arriving within the past 2 or 3 generations write that they came as O'Kinselagh but have changed the spelling of their surname to Kinsella, their immigrant ancestor leaving the tradition with then that the names are the same as KINCHELOE.

Pg 4. Extended research through records and books available to compiler discloses no name spelled or sounded "KINCHELOE" earlier than the record of the marriage in Northumberland County, VA, Oct 14, 1660 of Hugh Kinselo to Marion Haley.
Not content with the absence from literature in the American Colonies or Europe of the surname "KINCHELOE" of a date earlier than 1660 compiler sought, and was generously accorded, the able cooperation of the library of the Gen. Society of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, UT, who searched through 60 volumes of their indices of English records from the beginning of Parish registers in 1538 to 1770 AD through their indices to Irish, Isle of Man, Welsh, and Scottish records, through a large card index of persons from all parts of the world, and through other surname indices without once finding the name "KINCHELOE". Their British, Scottish, and Isle of Man records showed more surnames beginning with letter "K" than other countries. 574(432)a
"Kincheloe" is an Americanized spelling of a Scottish or Irish name which had been evolved in those early days for only one family. 148
Early researchers into American KINCHELOE ancestry were aware of the record, above, of marriage of Hugh Kinselo to Marion Haley, but found no confirmation that Hugh was father of CORNELIUS KINCHELOE, K, p.5. They did find public record that CORNELIUS was father of John, K-1, p.6, and record of John having married, and obtained records of names of most of John's 11 children. Proof is cited in this book that nearly all listed in this book descend from CORNELIUS, k-2-1, p.395, apparently a son of CORNELIUS, probably CORNELIUS, Jr. On available records these early researchers apparently accepted CORNELIUS KINCHELOE as our immigrant ancestor.

John KINCHELOE and wife, Elizabeth, signed deed, Jan 4 1725, conveying to Anthony Snider their home plantation on waters of KINCHELOE Spring Branch and Totuskey Creek, in N. He acquired a large boundary of land in Stafford Co, which was out off into Prince William Co, VA with his homestead tract in 1730 to 1731, there being no record in Prince William Co, VA, his home plantation being in Hamilton Parish Wm Co (Prince William Co).
He took deed to land in Stafford Co, VA from Wm. Champ between 1728 and 1732; signed as witness June 15, 1773, a deed from Richard Tidwell to Thomas Osborne for 842 acres on the south side of Occuquan Creek, recorded in Prince Wm. Co. in 1738; was appointed May 28, 1739 as guardian for Margaret Osborne, his account as such was approved by the court Aug 28, 1741; is elsewhere described in the public records of Prince Wm Co as "Gentlemen".

to larger areas of which were perhaps in Fairfax Co, VA extending eastward from Bull Run to Clifton Station, Va, several miles on which five generations of descendants were born and buried. Their grave markers were destroyed by Union Army encampments on their site. Later graves were marked. John KINCHELOE signed will Mar 16, 1746 and died in Pr.Wm. Co before March 25, 1746, when appraisal of his estate is dated and filed there.
The orginal will and record of it are lost from the county courthouse. Recitals of bequests of land by him are found in deeds of two or more sons, when they sold same and records of the VA House of Burgess refer to it by date of signing.

This land became part of Prince William County, just west of what is now Washington,D.C.
The land was on both sides of Bull Run, along Occuquan Creek and Nebasco Creek in Hamilton Parish.
In 1737, he bought land on Powell's Run and more land on Bull Run and in Hamilton Parish.

John KINCHELOE, Jr. ... of Stafford, Prince William and Fauquier counties, Va. and Washington and Hawkins, counties, Tenn. is identified in traditions of KINCHELOE families whose ancestors were first in Richmond (formerly old Rappahannook) Co., Va. and later, in the other named Va. counties, and in Wood Co., Va. (W.Va.), Tenn., Ky. and the Carolinas, as being one among the older sons of John KINCHELOE, Sr. ... and wife, Elizabeth CANTERBURY, Associations, in time, place and transactions of other ch. [children] of John and Elizabeth tend to confirm these traditions, as do the time and place of marriages, births and deaths of ch. [children] of John, Jr. and other accounting for nearly all other Kincheloes of the generation of John, Jr., in North America are offered in connection with the traditional removal of one of the sons of John and Elizabeth from Va. to Tenn., in which it will further appear that such removal was by John KINCHELOE, the first known, John KINCHELOE, "Jr."
More precision and details than found in many family traditions is contained in a treasured reply written Dec. 18, 1912 to compiler by Mrs. William (Margaret McPherson ... F0UST, a recognized McPherson-Kincheloe genealogical authority, cousin of compiler's father. It contained her personal childhood recollections of her then aged grandparents, Daniel, and Susannah (KINCHELOE) McPherson, the ancestors of all known McPherson-Kincheloe descendants, she having heard from the lips of each such grandparent, and refreshed from their family records, that they m. Dec. 31, 1772, he being b. Oct. 22, 1755, she Sept. 22, 1755 and that Susannah's father came to Upper E. Tenn. (Washington Co.) where he lived the remainder of his life. Of Mrs. Foust's letter Dean, Clement Rose Jones ... a highly qualified genealogist on all branches of American Kincheloes (Kinslows), wrote:
"While desirable to get actual Bible records the letter of Mrs. Margaret Foust affords ample evidence that her grandmother was Susannah KINCHELOE. Being a grand daughter, such a letter, I believe, would be accepted as evidence . . .. Her belief that her great-grand father KINCHELOE also came to Tennessee, coupled with the fact that John KINCHELOE, Jr. ... did go to Tennessee and the further fact that there was no other known KINCHELOE who could have been the father of Susannah makes her line certain beyond any reasonable doubt. This is an extremely valuable letter."
" A will witnessed by John KINCHELOE is added proof that he was in Washington Co., Tenn. in 1793." (1) (2) (3)
"The Kincheloes, Hardwicks and Glascocks were among the first settlers of the Fauquier Co., Va. frontier."
----
The Kincheloes most have come through Thorofare Gap in Bull Mt. known as "Old Mother Leathercoat'. White Plains now The Plains was already settled when they came and they settled near Rectortown where they have since remained.
----
The Kincheloes intermarried with the Wickliffes and Hardins and most of the representatives of these 3 families moved to Kentucky. and Tenn. where they became the leading citizens of these States.
John KINCHELOE ... had assigned to brother, Daniel KINCHELOE ... a claim which was sued to judgment and levy made in Fauquier Countyy,Virginia in 1760.
-----
John moved from Prince William County,Virginia to Fauquier County,Virginia in the 1760s, then a wilderness, now one of the beauty spots of Virginia..
He had an adjudication made in Fauquier County,Virginia in 1761 as to the age of his slaves, and is recorded there in 1761 as owner of personal property, served on the jury in Fauquier in 1764, voted in an election in Prince William Countyy,Virginia in 1764.

John's brother, William KINCHELOE,sister,Margaret and probably some nephews and nieces were pioneer settlers in Fauquier County,Virginia served with brother, William KINCHELOE to "view a road from Loudoun County,Virginia line to the main road above James Nelson's place in Fauquier County,Virginia took deeds from brother,William KINCHELOE & wife Mollie,October 21,1768 in Parish of Leeds,Fauquier County,Virginia 183 acres for 58 pounds and 1 shilling Octpber 22,1768 for 320 acres in Fauquier County,Virginia the former being purchased by William from Burgess Smith he and William being appointed to survey a road there in 1769 to "the upper church or Lead's Parish" and collect the tithes therefore, was in controversy with Rector in March 1770, as resident of Parish of Leeds in Fauquier County,Virginia on Sept. 23,1771 took deed for 157 acres in Fauquier County,Virginia from John and Catherine Rector, paying 62 pounds and 16 shillings, signed an indenture with Thomas Glascock

PG6: The fact that both John KINCHELOE and John Canterbury, apparently his wife's brother, voted for Lord Fairfax in the election in 1741 showed a leaning toward the nobility at that late date.
The Christian names of the 11 children of John and Elizabeth (Canterbury) KINCHELOE, and of the 4 or more known children of Peter KINCHELOE, and of Peter's sons, Conrad and Daniel, should have weight in deciding the nationality of the KINCHELOE ancestor who was immigrant to the American Colonies.
John KINCHELOE and wife, Elizabeth, signed deed, Jan 4 1725, conveying to Anthony Snider their home plantation on waters of KINCHELOE Spring Branch and Totuskey Creek, in N. Farnham Parish, Richmond Co, VA. Soon thereafter John and family moved from Richmond Co, VA to Stafford Co, which then covered all of Northern Virginia beyond the "Neck".
Co, VA; acquired new lands in the vicinity of Nebasco Creek not far from Potomac River in Stafford Co, VA which was cut off into Prince Wm Co, and lay in Hamilton Parish.

PG 7. John KINCHELOE served as warden of Truro Parish, Primce Wm Co, 1732-1736, and as vestryman from 1736 until his death in 1746; took deed from George Calvert Jan 30, 1737 for land on Powell's Run, 300 acres within the Dixie Ward survey; from John Creel land on Bull Run; made deed Aug 17, 1737 for 40 lbs VA money to John Gregg for 169 acres in Hamilton Parish, both described as "Gentlemen of Hamilton Parish, Prince Wm Co"; is recorded on the quit-rest roll of Pr. Wm. Co. in 1738; was appointed May 28, 1739 as guardian for Margaret Osborne, his account as such was approved by the court Aug 28, 1741; is elsewhere described in the public records of Prince Wm Co as "Gentlemen".
----
John Kincheloe's name is on the poll list of electors of Pr. Wm. Co in 1741 and 1744; owned "much land on both sides of Bull Run
to larger areas of which were perhaps in Fairfax Co, VA extending eastward from Bull Run to Clifton Station, Va, several miles on which five generations of descendants were born and buried. Their grave markers were destroyed by Union Army encampments on their site. Later graves were marked. From these tracts two large farms remain to this day in ownership of descendants, one by the estate of James Ulysses KINCHELOE, deceased, the other by E.P. Kirby, ex-sheriff of Fairfax Co, Va.

John KINCHELOE, Richmond Co, Va married Elizabeth Canterbry, born there, Pr. Wm. Co, between 1776 and 1778.
She was the daughter of John and Ruth (Williams) Canterbury, dau. of Roger and Joane (Frith) Williams.
File indices in Prince William County Courthouse indicate such a will was probated there.

"The Kincheloes, Hardwicks and Glascocks were among the first settlers of the Fauquier Co., Va. frontier."
