Lois,
My grandmother, who was born in San Antonio, always claimed her mother's name was Annie Anastasia Kindla, and was from the Panna Maria/Pleasanton, TX area. We have not had any luck finding anything. Since my great-grandmother had a thick accent, my mother believes perhaps her name was a misheard version of something we found on a tombstone: Anna Stagcer. Please let me know if you have any information related to this.

Thanks so much,
Sarah Crandall

Stugeer - given or surname?

An heirship affidavit regarding a 1892 death, plus grave marker, shows Anna Stugeer Kindla (Atacosa Co, TX). Her maiden name was Korus.

Is "STUGEER" a given name, family name, or affectionate nickname? Anna married about age 17 so it probably is not from prior marriage. Any information would be appreciated.
Heinrich, I am replying directly with information on Johann Kindla (1805 Centawa, Poland - 1883 Bandera, Texas) who arrived in Galveston in 1853 with his family. Luckily, our family records in the old county have been thoroughly researched and I am happy to share.

Hello Heinrich: I'm so glad to read your post, and would be glad to furnish you with all the info I have on the Polish Bandera, Texas pioneer, John Kindla (1805 - 1883) and his family. Please contact me directly. Other name spellings include: Kindel, and on the passanger list from his 1855 voyage to America: "Windel, Johann with Family." Although many persons had arrived in the US from Prussian-controlled Poland previously, he was memeber of the first large group who left Poland for Texas, and is the founder of the Kindla clan, small as it is, in the US. Read The First Polish Americans- Silesian Settlements in Texas by T. Lindsay Baker, Texas Univ. Press, ISBN 89096-725-3 for excellent description of conditions in Silesia which impelled them to leave their families and homeland and come to Texas. It is a fascinating tale. John Kindla was my great grandfather. Best regards.

My father's surname at birth was Kindla. He was born in San Antonio TX. on 04-09-1925, he changed his name to Preston after WWII. I know very little about his background he would not talk about it much. His mother abandon him when he was little and he was raised by Monks out side of San Antonio. Her name was Agnes Kindla maiden name was Stopera. We are not sure what his father's name was, his grandparents names may of been Ben and Mary Kindla. Does any of this coincide with anyting in your family geneology? We have been trying to find information on his family with little success.

Thanks very much for any info.

Nancy: We do not have an Anthony in our Kindla family tree.
There is another branch of Kindla's, some live in San
Antonio & some near Pleasanton, TX. I have not had time
lately to make contact with anyone. I'm probably just going
to have to make some phone calls this fall when I get more
time to work on it. I looked in the San Antonio directory
& there are several Kiindla's,but no Anthony. There is a
Tony Kindle, with the e on the end instead of a. That might
be worth a phone call. 210-695-1151 You might also look in
directories in other states to see if there is an Anthony.
I'll keep your message on file in case I find anything.
Lee
