Re: King yDNA?

Hi,

I replied off-list to a query I received in reply to this thread about DNA. I thought part of my reply might interest some of you.

To put it in context I was writing to a man, but the subject also affects women.

>>

....As you are a male, you won't pass on your Mother's mtDNA (whatever group that might be); what 'defines' YOU (almost to the point of being a sub-set of homo sapien), is your 'male line' yDNA haplogroup.

(cut)

Your mtDNA goes back from your mother, to her mother, to her mother, to her mother... back hundreds of thousands of years, right back to the very first mother to have a daughter! Likewise your yDNA, goes back in an 'unbroken' line of sons having sons... right back to 'Adam'... you could even argue - back to the very first mammalian son to have a son!

Just to clarify; a man will NOT pass on the mtDNA he inherits from your Mother, it is only passed on from daughter to daughter. So.... when a man marries and they conceive, the wife's mtDNA literally 'destroys' her husbands mtDNA and the wife's mtDNA is passed to the children. Likewise yDNA is ONLY passed from son to son.

If you are a son with no son (or a daughter with no daughter) you are what I call "The Last Son". Whether through circumstance or choice, YOU are causing a BREAK in your own unique 'unbroken' line from 'Adam'. BUT... it not merely a break, it is literally the END of 'your' own unique 'unbroken line from 'Adam'! Sperm banks not withstanding, it CANNOT start up again.

If you have a child of the opposite sex, then some of your 'autosomnal' DNA will still pass on, but your yDNA (or mtDNA) uniqueness will end.

The "LAST SON" is an unrecognised personal and social event. You won't find any research into it. It is perhaps a little sad when a surname dies out because a man has no son, but the family name can survive through brothers and male cousins. More profoundly, when a son with no son dies, or a daughter with no daughter dies, it is not just a 'death'... it is actually also a personal extinction event.

I am a LAST SON! (Not by choice). If anyone reading this is the same boat (male or female, young or old, just having no same-sex issue) then please join the new Facebook group I just started to discuss this fascinating human condition.

http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=180403632280

(cut and paste this address into your browser)

>>

I hope there was something in there that was helpful to somebody.

Best regards,

RouX

I am looking for information and descendents of the King family that lived in Marshall Co AL. So far I show them as early as 1860 on the census records. James Wood King-born 1836-was my mom's grgrandfather and he fathered 7 children and had 1 stepson named Major that wound up in Cullman Co at one point. There are many descendents scattered around from James King's children, many in AL and some as faw away as Texas, descended from Jeff King, in the Dallas area. Any information would be helpful. Feel free to email or reply. Thanks

Is there any chance your Francis King is related to the King family that in about 1900 was living in Warrenton AL which is outside of Guntersville AL? They are my mom's (our) family. Maybe we'll discover something. I remember seeing Francis on some of the piles of documents and stuff that I have, but I'll have to go back and look.
Matthias (Mathias, Matheus) KOENIG (KONIG, KING) Westmoreland Co. PA Militia Soldier Revolutionary War

I'm researching Matthias (Mathias, Matheus) KOENIG (KONIG, KING) the supposed Corporal in the Hampton Co, Pennsylvania militia during the Revolutionary War. Though there are varying birth dates, locations and fathers, generally he was born between 1724 and 1734 in Germany, died abt. 1810 in Westmoreland Co, PA and was married to Eva Anna Christina HARTZEL.

Here's my problem: There were two Matthias KOENIGs (+ spelling variations). One was about 53 years old in 1777 and the other b. 1756. The first was the Matthias listed above and the second was either his nephew or a cousin once removed son of Jacob and spouse to Eva Elizabeth JUNG depending on who's family history you read or have documented. They both lived in Westmoreland Co. and either one of these men could have been the documented militia man. Does anyone know for sure, have documentation, or oral history that proves which Matthias was the militia man? There is no Rev War Pension record since both men and their spouses died in the early 1800s and neither applied for the pension. According to Mr. Jonathan Stayer, head of the reference section at the Pennsylvania State Archives, "Generally, the militia records of the Revolutionary War do not note age. The Militia Act of 1777 required that every able-bodied, white male between the ages of 18 and 53 in Pennsylvania be enumerated for militia purposes. Since the elder Matthias KOENIG turned 53 years old (as per the birth date of 1724 that I supplied him) in 1777, he would have been liable for militia duty only until he turned 54 in 1778. Militia service was not popular, so he probably would have tried to take advantage of his age exemption as soon as possible."

I've come across all the references, and a few more on family tree websites. Here's the ones I've found:

•	Mathias Konig/Koenig, Corporal, 7th Company, Northampton Co. Militia under Captain George Nollf. Listed as serving in Nollf's company in 1781 in a publication by Thomas Lynch Montgomery, "Muster rolls, etc., 1743-1787".
•	Mathias Koenig listed as a Northampton Frontier Ranger in the publication, "Muster Rolls of the Navy and Line, Militia and Rangers, 1775-1783" by William Henry Egle.
•	From "Armstrong County, Pennsylvania: her people past and present ..., Volume ," By J.H. Beers & Co: "During the Revolution he served the Colonial cause as a corporal in Capt. George Nolf's company.”
•	Pg. 128 http://books.google.com/books?id=_0QOAAAAIAAJ&pg=PA181&a... - Second Battalion of the Militia of Northampton…..A new class role for Capten Geo. Archives series 6 volume 15 at page 1169, with indicated service proven by D.A.R. Which, actually leads me back to the pages 128, 181 and 213 listed above.

Another family researcher, and a DAR member, Merry Anne, and I corresponded briefly on this issue and it may be of interest. She wrote: “Wilbur Lewis King who wrote the Genealogy Jacob KING (KONIG) and Matheus KING of Northampton CO, PA, 1951, has him as serving in the Rev. War. I have a birth date as ca 1730 which would have made him about 54 if it is he that served. (DAR has his birth date as ca 1734):

KING, MATHIAS

Ancestor #: A064676
Service:
PENNSYLVANIA Rank: CORPORAL
Birth: C 1734 GERMANY
Death: 1810 WESTMORELAND CO PENNSYLVANIA

Service Description:
1) ALSO PVT, CAPT GEORGE NOLF, COL WM RAUP
2) NORTHAMPTON CO MILITIA

There are more than 25 people (who applied for DAR membership) who have used him, including me. The only way to “Absolutely” prove which one served, I guess, would be to inspect the church records for Dryland church and the tombstone records and the court records to see if you can:
1.	Get a birth date.
2.	Determine where Mathias SR was during the time frame he supposedly served with the militia.
3.	Court records may give his age if he ever gave a deposition about anything that required him to give his age.

The fact that DAR has accepted the service as belonging to him makes me think that there is some substantial proof.

Funny about that KONIG KING book. He cites the almost same service for both of the Mathias Kings, Jacob’s son and Jacob’s brother.

P. 12” In 1780, 1781, and 1782 he was a private in Capt. Geo. Nolf’s company, Northampton County Militia and in the latter year he served as a corporal of the company. (PA arch. S.6. V. XI, p. 253.” this is Mathias, son of Jacob, b. 1756. This reference has nothing to do with the Rev. War. Its a sheriff appt of Mathias Koenig for the county of Northampton in 1780.

Mathias son of Abraham b. ca 1734 is cited as “In 1784 he was a corporal in Capt Michel’s Company, Northampton Co, Militia” P_A Archives series 6 vol. 3, p. 817. Let me pull both those Archive records for you.”

So, to summarize, I have all these great references, the possibility that either the older or younger (or both) Matthias could have been in the militia, no age, no specific address or spouse's name attached, and supposedly the DAR holds the proof, (I have not contacted DAR for copies of their proof). What proof, other than that listed above, does the DAR have? What proof do you folks have? Can anyone tell me for sure which Matthias was in the militia.

I welcome all comments and info on this matter.

LeAnn Hugeback

I have a King GrGrandmother known to us as Jennie, who named a son Richard Conway Ray. Conway was supposed to be a "family name". Whose side is unknown. Jennie L King was probably an Elizabeth, maybe an orphan of James King. I believe she lived in her Aunt Elizabeth King McEllhanon's household in Illinois in the 1860's. Does anyone know any connections, Conway or otherwise?

KING-HOOPER in Wayne County, IL

I have been given infomation that my Susan A. HOOPER, b. 1827 in IL, married Amazon KING on 25 Dec 1844. The 1850 census for Wayne County, IL has two listings for this possible KING-HOOPER household. There is an Amon KING (age 24) married to a Susan ? (age 23). Then there is an Anderson KING (age 26) married to a Susan ? (age 23). It is thought that one of these Susans is the Susan A. HOOPER, daughter of Dempsey & Elizabeth (SLOCUMB) HOOPER, that I am looking for. Is there anyone on this list that has ties to either of the KING households mentioned above.

Hi there, I am so happy to hear from you, and wish to introduce myself. My name is Verl King who has been keeping records of the family history since some of our people in this site has passed away now.

My DNA test results at Family Tree DNA determined that I am a descendant of Henry King also, though I can't document a connection to him. I descend from Peter King of Hanover County, Virginia who most assume that was born about 1694 in New Kent County to Thomas and Mary King. He came to North Carolina around 1750 and settled on land adjoining John King, a descendant of Henry, in Orange County and died there about 1763......

The results also show a match with you at 37 markers with a genetic distance of 2. According to their calculations the probability of our most recent common ancestor appearing within 10 generations is roughly 70%. Factoring in the certainty that it was not within the first 4 generations, their calculations lower the percentage to 53.

This seems to indicate our common King ancestor was Henry rather than one of his descendants......

Would appreciate your thoughts on this.

King family of Raleigh, Wake Co., NC

John King met Janet Greig Jack aboard ship to the States in 1860 - probably entered the States through Baltimore - and married her shortly after arrival. They moved to Raleigh, NC, and there had 7 children - Christina, William, John, Margaret, George, Janet and Peter Robert (my father). George died young. John was a Mason and a successful building contractor in Raleigh and elsewhere in NC. He died in 1880 while overseeing construction of a church in Asheville, NC, and his body was returned to Raleigh for burial in Oakwood Cemetery. A couple of friendly searchers have tried to find his grave, but it seems the cemetery has lost it. After his death, the remaining family moved to Baltimore, and all except my father lived out their lives there. They are buried in Loudon Park Cemetery there. Dad moved to IN about 1920 and, though there was no family friction (to my knowledge), contact was thereafter limited. I never met any of my aunts and uncles who are, of course, now long gone. If these names strike a chord with anyone, I would really like to hear from you. Many thanks.

Never received your entry at DNA.ancestry.com; so, we can do this another way. Send me your data and your Kings from 1900 to your earliest King (meaning the farthest you could go back). I just need the min. DOB & spouses and children. Because, this way I can research what you have to find the missing link to those in my database and emails from other researchers such as yourself. I also looked on the KING PROJECT at familytreedna.com and didn't see your entry...are you posted to that database too? Pass on your kit # so I can compare it with mine...or at least tell me which one you are on that column for Henry King 1658 VA.
Ed

I had received an email back some time ago who had done research on this William King family nickname "Factory Billy" of Darlington County SC who thought there may have been a connection...I can't seem to find that email. If I do, I will forward it to you.

There was a Leander King from Pekin, IL that was enlisted with Company "E" 47th Illinois Infantry during the Civil War. Here is a line from the the "E" Co.'s roster.

KING, Leander Sergeant Pekin Aug 16, 1861 M.O. Oct 11, 1865, as 1st Sgt.

His unit egngaged in the following campaigns:

New Madrid/Island No. 10, Siege of Corinth, Iuka, Corinth, Operations against Vicksburg [Central Mississippi Campaign, Jackson, Siege of Vicksburg], Red River Campaign, Pleasant Hill, Ft Blakely

I also think he was enlisted in a few other Illinois Regiments. I hope you find what you are looking for. This man probably has a great story to his name.

I am descended from Duncan King and Lydia Fosque who had a child Solomon King who married Elizabeth Holmes and had a child Mary who married (I think) Henderson Warren Curtis. Any information about this line is most appreciated.
