I am also seeking Kirker family in Butler Co. Specifically, I'm looking for information on Nancy Kirker, b. PA abt. 1840. She married Emanuel Thomas 1865 and resided Beaver Co.; they had one child -- Mary A (Molly) Thomas b. 1866, who married Jacob Zeigler Sitler.

Does anyone find a Nancy among their Kirkers?

Great to meet you, Cousin!! Governor Thomas Kirker was also my Grandfather Poage's great grandfather -- the governor would be my great, great, great grandfather. So, you must be from about the same generation. Governor Kirker's home is still in the family, and we have wonderful cousins who still live there on the old place. My husband and I had the pleasure of visiting with them a couple of times. We attended a 200th anniversary of the Underground Railroad of which the Kirker family played a part. Sincerely, Sharon Poage Pakkala

My family is from Coshocton. My paternal grandmother, b. approx. 1905, was Charlotte Donna Kirker. She married Walter Lightel Parrish, and they had 2 sons: David Kirk (my father) and John Mark. On my mom's side, I am related to the Boals, Haxtons, and Bickels of the Coshocton area. My dad worked on a family tree years ago, and got back to the 1600's on one of the sides. I am currently searching for this information, and will post if I find it.

Don,
I'm thinking your information about Martin's siblings possibly came from the 1850 Census, Coshocton Co. OH. If so, Charlotte was already married to Richard Barnes (m. 03-26-1846) and so was not listed in William and Ellen's household. We believe William and Ellen are Charlotte's parents based on information from "History of Coschocton Co, Ohio 1881" Page 633. "Richard Barnes...married in 1846 to Charlotte Kirker, daughter of William and Ellen Kirker." I believe we have an obituary for Martin Kirker in case you do not have it. We also have some good information (from a Cass County NE cemetery history) about the Loders coming to Nebraska starting in 1857, then Rachel and Martin and others of the family arriving in 1863.
Linda

John and Sydney Thrush Kirker

Bill,
I know it has been awhile since you posted your message but I believe that I am researching the same John Kirker that you are. They were from Jefferson County, PA then moved to New Brighton, PA then later Ohio, where I lost track of them.
In the 1860 Knox Township, Jefferson County, PA census there was John Kirker(misspelled as Kirks) age 45, Sidney 36, Joseph 16, Anna 11, William 6, John M. 4, and Harrison 1.
They lived close to my GGGgrandfather, William Rice, on a farm John bought in 1855 from Elijah Chittister, William Rice's father-in-law. William Rice is the son of Simon Rice and Susan Kirker. I believe that Susan may be John's sister, and that they may have a sister Sarah who married Samuel Thrush, Sydney's brother. I know that Sarah was the d/o John and Sarah Kirker of Butler County, PA. Since William Rice was born in Butler County, I am sure that there is a connection. I am trying to find documentation, but right now I only have circumstantial evidence. I have some deeds, marriage licenses, obituaries, etc.
E-mail me at recourse@penn.com if you still think this is the John Kirker that you are lookinf for and still need this information. I would love to know what you have on the descendants of John and Sydney Kirker.
Paula

Donna,
My g-g-g-great-grandmother was Susan Kirker Rice. Her son William was married in 1854 in Jefferson County, PA but they were orginally from Butler County, PA. I have just started this branch, and I have not made a connection but I also have a John Kirker in Jefferson County, PA in 1840 who was 77 years old, and had fought in the Revolutionary War. It looks like he had sons John and James and one of them may be my Susan's father. I think they came from Butler County, PA , too. Maybe they are some relation to your John.

Kirker family from Adams Co. OHio

I believe the family you are inquiring about is the family of Samuel Kirker. He and my great grandmother Jennie Christine Kirker were brother and sisters. I don't have the time right now to dig into my files but please keep in touch and I will fill you in.
James Kirker, born Ireland and came here about 1820, listed as a shoemaker by trade was the orginal Kirker from this line. He is said to be by some a second cousin of Gov. Thomas Kirker. Years ago a book was written called Savage Scene. That writer had our James Kirker mixed up with the Indian fighter out west. Our James Kirker was listed in the 1880 census living with a daughter Martha Stevenson in Adams Co. Ohio.

I will check my records later, but I believe you might be searching for William Samuel Kirker who went by the name of Samuel Kirker.
Samuel had a sister, Jennie Christine Kirker (my great grandmother, and a brother George Russell Kirker, who went by the name of Russell Kirker. "Uncle Sam Kirker" lived all his life in Adams Co. and I have a snapshot which included him and his sister Jennie when they were elderly. Their father was James Kirker who was born in Ireland about 1802 and came to this country 1822. He married, I believe for the second time, a girl by the name of Jane Russell. Her mothers name on the license was Margaret Brogden. She might have remarried. Jane or Margaret Jane was only about 21 yrs old and James was over 40 yrs. He was a shoemaker by trade when he came over. One author of a book SAVAGE SCENE had it all mixed up when they tried to connect my James Kirker of Adams county with the James Kirker who was an Indian fighter out west. My James Kirker was listed in the 1880 Adams Co Census living with his daughter, Martha Stevenson in Monroe Twp. One descendant said he was a second cousin to Gov. Thomas Kirker, the second Gov. of Ohio. Martha Love to hear from you again.

Hi Carol,
It looks like we are definitely cousins if you are also descended from Mordecai Barnes, b. 1786! We live in Ashland, NE where some of the Barneses and Kirkers settled. We haven't delved too much into Charlotte Kirker Barnes' ancestry. Some information we have is that she was the daughter of William and Ellen Welling Kirker, but we haven't verified that. Let us know where you are located and how you are connected.
Gov. Thomas Kirker descendants and ancestors

Gov. Thomas Kirker's daughter Sarah married Robert Poage, and I am descended from them all. According to my records Thomas was born in County Tyrone, Ireland, and he married Sarah Smith. Thomas, born 20 February 1837, came to Lancaster County, PA, first when he was 19 years old. He was the second governor of Ohio; I have found his portrait in a county history book. Are you in this line of Kirkers? I am also curious about the Kirker name. As I recall, I seem to remember seeing the name in Ireland was spelled something like "Carreghear." This may have been at a Mormon Family History Center, but I can't seem to find where I copied that information or wrote it down. Let me know if you have any more info on this line. Thanks, Sharon

Hi Ed,
Good to hear from you. Robert Poage's parents were Col. James A. Poage (b. ca. 1755, Pocahontas, Tazewell Co., VA) and Mary Woods (b. 19 Feb 1766, Augusta Co., VA). They were married in 1787; I have varying dates: 19 March, 10 March. I hope this helps you. Col. James was a surveyor and laid out the town of Ripley, Ohio. My son has seen his home which still stands there near the Ohio River.
Ed, I will give you my e-mail address: LSPakkala@msn.com, so we can communicate that way too. I am trying to recall if you are in the Poage line too. I believe you said you had information on Governor Thomas Kirker's wife's side of the family (Smith!!!). I know nothing about her and would appreciate knowing more. I am descended from the immigrant from Ireland, Robert Poage who settled near Staunton, VA, and then from his son John Poage and daughter Martha (cousins married later down the line), from Martha's daughter Mary who married John Poage's son Col. James Poage (They settled in southern Ohio where James laid out the town of Ripley, OH.). Their son Robert Poage married Sarah Kirker, and I am descended from their son Rev. James Smith Poage who is my great-grandfather. James son George Smith Poage was my grandfather, and my father John Newton Poage was his and Jane Rachel (McClelland) Poage's youngest son. I am John Newton Poage's eldest child of four, born in 1936.
I looked Hamilton up on the map, and I know from the fire maps I've seen that you surely are in a hot zone. I am thankful with you that your home was spared.
We are getting ready for a September 2nd Washngton State wedding reception for our son Brian and his bride Elizabeth who were married in Atlanta on July 1. It's a good way for us to introduce her to family and friends. So for a few days I'm not going to be very good on the Internet. Please forgive. Sincerely, Sharon (Poage) Pakkala

I hope to be better about replies. How do we connect on the Poage line? I believe you had more info on the Smith side of the family -- oh, help, I always hope that I won't have that surname, but I guess it's bound to happen.
I found in the 1880 Census for Missouri, in Carroll County, a John R. Kirker, William Kirker and a Thomas Kirker. I was wondering if they were any relation to your husband's family. Listed as their mother and head of household was a Margaret McCann, which looks to be my great grandfather James McCann's mother.
