We share Anton (Anthony) Kirsch in our ancestry; actually, his brother Nicholas, who was my great-great-grandfather. I only know a little about Anton and his daughter Margaret (Schons) ... can you shed any light??
Both Nicholas and Anton, aged widowers in poor health, were living with my great-grandparents Michael and Barbara (Kirsch) in Kentland, IN when they died in 1900 (Michael died that same year)
Margaret Kirsch married Nicholas Schons on the same day (same church) that her cousin, John B Kirsch (son of Nicholas Kirsch) married Nicholas Schons' sister Anna Mary.
10/14/2009

New Kirsch DNA Testing Opportunity

I wanted to do two things relative to DNA and genealogy.

I want to make sure all of you know that we do have a Kirsch DNA project at www.familytreedna.com/public/Kirsch where Kirsch men can test to see which Kirsch families they match. We are currently working with a Kirsch gentleman overseas hoping to recruit Kirsch men from various areas of Germany. I'd like to encourage all Kirsch men to test.

Second, I want to let you know about a new autosomal DNA testing opportunity. You can see the info here on the blog:
http://the-lost-colony.blogspot.com/2009/09/new-23andme-auto...

Roberta Estes
Kirsch Family DNA Project Administrator (volunteer)
robertajestes@att.net

In the WWI draft cards database, I used first name variations plus soundex--- I found a few possibilties:

Frank Kirsche
Joseph Francis Kirschke
Frank F Kurz
Howard Francis Kurz
Franklin M Kurz

There are many others when you use soundex, but these seemed to fit the best.

If you establish death dates for these men, you might find a match. (You would still need additional confirmation, of course, but these might give you clues....)

I know where she was buried and have been to the cemetery. She is in New Cathedral Cemetery in the Clancy family plot along with her parents and a few siblings. My G grandfather isn't with her. Her parents paid for the plot which makes sense since my great grandfather was overseas or possibly already killed in action by then.I don't know who died first.

The Clancy's were and still are Catholic. My great grandparents eloped to PA so I would probably have to find court or Justice of the Peace records

Does your g-grandmother's birth certificate indicate a burial location? If so, contact that cemetery to see if you can get her burial records. Her husband might be buried next to her. You could also get birth dates or years then. Also, you might be able to get "sales" records of who bought the plot and when. She/they could be buried near other relatives, too.

Where she was buried could indicate religious affliation and could be affiliated with the church/synagogue/temple
where they were married.

Thank you. I will check out this Kirsch family.

You never The fact that these two families lived in the same district could very well be relevant. My research has shown that many of my relatives married spouses who lived in the same enumeration district and or attended the same church.

I hope we see more Maryland databases online in the future as well as PA.

Just to clarify for the readers, Margaret's maiden name is Clancy, daughter of James Clancy born in Ireland.

I looked at some records, and found one Frank Kirsch in Baltimore, 1910 census he is 29, sgl, born Germany, living with his brother Emil. 1920 census Emil is still in Baltimore, but brother Frank is not. I did not find him for certain in 1920, but he could of moved to another state, unless it is the Frank you seek, who died in WW1. Not sure this is relevent, but in the 1910 census, the Clancy's and the Kirsch's are both in the same census enumeration district.

If the couple eloped to PA, my guess is that they may have gone just over the state line to York county. Hopefully we will see more PA state data bases on-line some day.

I am trying to find information on my great grandfather Frank Kirsch and I am hitting brick walls wherever I go.

All I know about him is his name and that he was born in Pennsylvania.I got this info from my grandfather's birth certificate.

He moved to Baltimore Md at some point where he met my great grand mother Margaret Clabncy. They eloped to PA around 1917.

They had one son my grandfather Thomas who was born in Baltimore in 1918.

My grandfather never knew either of his parents as my ggrandmother died of flu the day after he was born and Frank died in WWI.My grandfather was adopted and raised by his maternal grandparents.

I have my g grandmothers death certificate and Frank isn't even mentioned on it. I have looked at WWI draft cards and records and found nothing. I have tried the Pa archives asking for marriage records but since I don't know the county they won't help.

Any suggestions on where to look when I have such little information to go on

I've been reading the thread that includes Juanita Kirsch Sprinkle with interest - as I research the Sprinkle family.

Karin's post included: "Check the Browning death index for Vanderburgh County to find out more on Juanita Kirsch Sprinkle, - I think she had three sons -one was alive when she died."

Juanita's card in the Browning index shows she was survived by a grandson named Larry. I believe Larry was actually her stepgrandson.

Juanita Kirsch married Robert William Sprinkle on 28 May 1914 in Vanderburgh Co. Robert previously married to Bessie Goldsmith on 24 Nov 1909. They had a son named Alvin Robert Sprinkle on 4 Dec 1910 - and, sadly, Bessie died 19 Dec 1910.

The 1920 census shows Robert, Juanita & Alvin living in Vincennes - so it appears as if Juanita raised Alvin.

I do not know of any children born to Juanita. Do you? In 1930, Robert & Juanita were living in Palmyra Twp., Knox Co. Just the two of them, no children.

Do you, by chance, know when Robert Sprinkle died? I don't have a date for his death.

Margaret

Kirsch Family of Wisconsin

I am looking for information on the Kirsch family who lived in Door County Wisconsin. They are listed as living in Liberty Grove, Door County, WI in the 1870. The family at that time consisted of Nicholas Kirsch, 26 of Luxembourg, his wife Mary, 15 of Denmark, Mathew Kirsch 24 of Luxembourg and his wife Anne, 18 of Denmark. Nicholas and Mathew (Mathias) were brothers born in Luxembourg. They were farmers. Mary and Anne were sisters, born in Denmark.
Nicholas and Mary had 2 children: Johan (John) born 4 Sept 1872 and Mary born abt 1871.
Mary married Joseph Phillip Hugenroth on June 19, 1889.
Mathew and Anne had 2 children, Peter and Victorene. Anne died shortly after the birth of Peter and Peter died a few months later.
It appears the Hugenroth family stayed in the Door County area and may still be there. So, if you are a member of this family, I would very much like to make contact with you.

Hi Linda,

I've always wondered if the "unrelated" Kirsch families are really unrelated. I discovered in the old German records that the Kirsch family from Aurora and the one from Lawrenceburg are indeed the same family back a few generations. Anyway, to answer your question, the base test is $99 through the Kirsch project at www.familytreedna.com. You can write me offlist if you have questions or want more info, or you can join the project. I'd love to solve this mystery. We have recently had a man from Germany express some interest as well, so hopefully, in time, we'll know more about our various Kirsch families.

Roberta Estes
restes@comcast.net or bobbi48114@yahoo.com
There is information regarding other family members, but I don’t know how they connect. I have transcribed the relevant portions below. Lorine mentions:

Cousins Eleanor, Robert and Donald Young
Ray and Wilbur Bosse (noted as Aunt Lou’s grandsons – however, I thought she never had children)
Edna Lunt (was elderly in 1965)

Lorine gives a summary of her family as follows:

Lorine’s sister is Mardie Endres, retired principal in Cincinnatti, in 1965 teaching English at Presbyterian Mission College in Mississippi
Mardie’s Dau Linda - junior at Trinity University in San Antonio (Presbyterian)
Mardie’s Dau Erin - married living in Anaheim California, has baby boy

Lorine’s Sister (Juanita Heather I believe, married to Walter Heather in Cincinnati, Ohio)
Juanita’s son Roger has two boys and a 3 year old girl
Juanita’s daughter Nita has two boys 9 and 6
Juanita’s son Loren Heather (the youngest) - heart specialist at LA county hospital, Ca.
Kirsch Family of Aurora Indiana- Free DNA Test Available

In 1847, Philip Jacob Kirsch, born 1806 in Fussgoenheim, Germany and his wife Katharine Barbara Lemmert, born 1807 in Mutterstadt, Germany, boarded ships and sailed for America. They landed in New Orleans and continued their trip on steamboats up the Mississippi and then the Ohio Rivers, landing in Indiana at Aurora and finally settling in Ripley County, near Milan where Philip farmed and they raised their children. They are both buried in Riverview Cemetery, outside of Aurora. They had children Johannes about whom nothing more is known except that he moved to Indianapolis. Martin abotu whom nothing more is known and who may have served in the Civil War. Their son Philip did serve in the Civil War, but never married. Johann William who may have married Carolyn Kuntz. Katharine Barbara who married Johann Martin Koehler and lived in Aurora, having 3 daughters, Mary about whom nothing more is known, Elizabeth who married Christian Knoebel, Mamie who married JOhn Fichter. Anna Maria who married Bernhard Kramer and nothing more is known.

Philip Kirsch and Catharine Barbara Lemmert's son, Jacob Kirsch married Barbara Drechsel (Drexler) and they established the Kirsch House, a hotel and food establishment in Aurora, beside the Depot, between the Depot and the River. They owned this establishment for nearly 50 years, from the mid 1870s through the early 1920s when Jacob died. Jacob and his brother served in the Civil War. One of their children was my great-grandmother, Nora Kirsch who married CB Lore in 1888 and moved to Rushville, Indiana. Their other children were scattered to the winds, some never having children, but others did and their descendants are unknown to me. I would love to find these family members. Their son Johann "Edward" Kirsch married Emma Miller and had 2 children, Juanita Kirsch who I know nothing more about and Devero Hoffer Kirsch who married Mary Schlater and they had one child, Anita, who I know nothing about. Jacob Kirsch's son Martin Kirsch married Maude Powers and had children Edgar Kirsch who married Frieda Neely and Cecil Kirsch who married Frank Toner. I believe both of these people had children, but I don't know who they were. Their daughter Nora Kirsch married CB Lore and only had 2 children who had children. Edith Lore who married my grandfather John Whitney Ferverda and moved to Silver Lake, Indiana. Edith's daughter Mildred Lore married Claude Martin and had 2 sons, Jimmy and Jerry Martin, born in the 1920s. Jimmy had 4 daughter, but I'm unaware of any of Jerry's children.

I have about 6 generations back in Germany as well, and there is reason to believe that the Kirsch family of Lawrenceburg is related to Jacob Kirsch's family. Furthermore, we know that the Kirsch family visited relatives in Pennsylvania, and so I have always wondered if the various Kirsch families from there are related as well. Hopefully the DNA project will answer some of those questions.

For the first Kirsch male who has a proven line of descent from the Kirsch family in Ripley County or Aurora in Dearborn County, or from the related family in Germany, I will pay for the DNA test.

Roberta Estes

Kirsch DNA Surname Project

I am very pleased to announce that I have formed the Kirsch DNA surname project at www.familytreedna.com/public/kirsch. Any male who carries the Kirsch last name, and therefore the Y chromosome can test. For those who don't know how this works, the Y chromosome is passed from father to son intact, because the mother doesn't have a Y chromosome (it's what makes males male), so sons carry their father's Y chromosome and we can compare the Y chromosome of various men of the same surname and determine whether or not they descend from a common Kirsch ancestor, or not.

My own Kirsch family is from Aurora and Lawrenceburg Indiana and came originally from Mutterstadt, Fussgoenheim and Rheingoenheim Germany. I'd love for others of this surname to test so we an see if we are all from a common Kirsch ancestor back in Germany or if the name had several origins.

Please feel free to contact me with any questions.

Roberta Estes

They all started out in Ger. with G.G.Grand Mathias Kirsch and Catherine Kessler.

G.Grand father,Christian Kirsch, married Elizabeth Patry, from Alsace, Lorraine, France. Her family, John Patry & Anna Shoney came to the US in 1876.

Take a look at the Kirsch tree here on Ancestry! You may find someone you've been looking for ....OR!...you may have some one that I'm looking for, and if you do, I want them back! HA! HA! HA! Linda Allen (Kirsch)
Kirsch Family - Portsmouth and Croydon UK.

Hi Kirsch Family members & researchers. My Kirsch family connection seems to arrive in Portsmouth UK, around 1850-1860 from "Naheralger, Germany (I have looked for this place but it seems not to exist.... it may refer to Nahe in Schleswig Holstein). After a re-marriage the family seems to have divided between Croydon in Surrey and those who remained in Portsmouth.

Anyone out there from the Portsmouth Kirsch clan? I can see that some Kirschs still live in this area and I am trying to establish whether we are related.

I have traced most of the Kirsch family but one "Carl Kirsch" remains elusive.

Any information is helpful.

Thanks - Andy Clark, Grandson of Ivy Amelia Kirsch.

Robert,
It's very strange that I happened upon this message from you. I have a Kirsch family tree here in Pittsburgh,Pennyslvania. My grandfather was Norman Bernard Kirsch Sr. He was married to Anna Mae Vucic. Alot of our familys are intertwined. My brother is Norman B. Kirsch III. Please view our tree and see what you think. I hope the names in common are same people. I am very curious to fill in the blanks!

Thank You,
Ronda Kirsch-Lavezoli

I don't have more information on those people, but another Kirsch - Barbara - married a Sprinkle. I don't know his name either. She is Norman Kirsch's daughter. Again, check Browning.

I think I can help you a bit -

Edward and Emma Miller Kirsch had two children. Deb [Devereux ] and Juanita . In 1929 Deb Kirsch married Earletah Gates in Evansville IN [there may have been a divorce in 1942] and in 1914 Juanita married Robert Sprinkles - again in Evansville. Devereux Hoffer Kirsch shows up in Vincennes b 6 Aug 1898 married to Cora Kirsch is an iceman in Vincennes in WWI draft records.
Vincennes is filled with my Kirsch relatives, which is why I came across yours. Evansville has at least four Kirsch clans.

Kirsch is a fairly common last name and occurs all over Germany - I think it also occurs throughout Indiana. Check the Browning death index for Vanderburgh County to find out more on Juanita Kirsch Sprinkle, - I think she had three sons -one was alive when she died. Contact me through this list if you have more questions.
