Hi there,

My Kiteleys came from Upper Arley, Staffordshire/Worcestershire and Alveley, Shropshire and I am doubtful that your Sarah is connected to us.

I don't know what you have already tried in trying to figure out this family but you might want to try the following ideas. First, try the IGI on the LDS Church web site for the family as this may give you some clues. You would look for any other Andrews and Kitleys (with all variant spellings)in Bristol and nearby areas. If you could find the family you may be able to find out the siblings for John and therefore know who the brother was for further follow up. This would also apply to Sarah.

Look for a ships passenger list of the family coming into this country. I'm not sure if there are lists of passengers on any British web sites but you could try immigration, emigration in England on Ancestry. Also try looking for the family in the 1841 British census and then later ones for any of the family that remained behind.

You could also subscribe (free) on Rootsweb to the Gloucestershire web site and post a message there to see if anyone can help.

Hope the helps. Good luck

I may be totally off-base, but I have an ancestor whom I had believed was named Sarah Kittelty who was married at St. Peter and Jacob in Bristol in 1831 to a James Andrews. In the church records, that was how it was spelt. I found her name on her Son's death certificate dated 1910. The handwriting and quality of the photocopy were dreadful and it may have had a different spelling than the church records, but I think the Kittelty name has been modified many times in America. It's similar enough, and unusual enough that I really need to explore Kitley as a possible match.

To make a long story short, their son John Andrews emigrated to the United States around 1851. His father James Andrews stone is nearby. When John died in 1910, his obituary said he still had a brother living in England. So some of his family made the trip and some didn't. May I be so bold as to ask any of the Kitley respondants if any of this sounds like something they can connect to their families?

Our oral history suggests her family may have been scottish. John Andrews (my 2nd great grandfather) was eighteen when he arrived here in 1851. His father was born in 1810, I have no dates for Sarah.

William.

Looking back on your posts and research that I have done recently I attach another file.

I had been interested to see if there were any Odeys, descendants of Thomas Odey's second family still living near my son.

I downloaded a search that I attach if it is any use to you. ER means Electoral Roll and Dir means Director.

I do not know if the Electoral Roll is the full or edited roll of those wishing not to appear on the commercial version.

David

I am looking for any information on my grandfather, Archibald Henry Kitley.
All I know about him is that I think I found him on the 1881 census in Weston Super Mare at 8 months old living with his grandmother Ellen Kitley (widow)
He was married to my grandmother Constance May Kitley re; Hickson.
They lived in Yeovil Somerset were my mother was born, Freda Dorothy, she was an only child.
On mothers birth certificate it says Archibold was a Professional Illusionist. That was 1913
Later on my mother and fathers wedding certificate in 1951 he was deceased but had been a Pianoforte dealer?
I have no living relatives to ask so I hope someone may be able to help me.

Hello David,
Your valiant efforts to send me your information was completely successful - thank you very much indeed.

The Nelson Road census is interesting to me, it includes my mother Olive, her brother Harry, and their cousins entered as No.s 8-10 - they are the children of Frederick and Alice entered above. Just a short while after this census was taken Frederick died, Nellie died in 1913, and her father Thomas died in 1915, this left his wife Kate with a young family to raise... I can remember Alfred visiting Winchester several times to visit friends/relatives? in Nelson Road, I cannot recall any names but I do know that the man of the house was of small stature who worked for many years in the ticket office of the local Southern/BR railway station. I have a file attachment on here for you - the first early census 1891-1901 for Esther Jane Reed/Read. Also, of Alfred`s mother Kate Olive, the original is badly damaged, this one I have repaired in Adobe Photoshop Elements 5 which I use for my other hobby of photography.

Thank you again.

William.

Hello David,

Thankyou for your interesting latest posts - two!

Finding information about Sir Oswald Mosley's membership of the BUF will be difficult, the man himself kept a very tight
control on keeping that information secret. There are many links on the net, I have put the name of `Kitley` in the available search engines without success.

Returning to the Odey/Kitley family, as far as I know, or discovered, James and Kate had seven children:- George, Harry, Kate Ellen, Fred (not shortened), Alfred, Mary and Nellie. Fred, Mary and Nellie all died young. The eldest boy George served in both the Merchant and Royal Navy. He married in his thirties,Harry married twice, he served in both the RN and the Army (RMP) Kate Ellen raised a large family with her husband Elijah. Fred married a widow, they lived in Hale Surrey, only a few miles from Upper Froyle. Alfred - you know more about him than I do. Mary died in hospital when she was twenty one, less than a year after her marriage, she did not survive an operation to remove an ovarian cyst. My Grandmother Nellie Gertude died in 1913 aged twenty five, from TB, she left two children, Harry aged four and my mother - Olive Bassett aged two, they were brought up by James and Kate. Nellie`s husband George dies in 1910 - by his own hand, my mother was born five months after the event. Your 1911 census of the Thomas Kitley household would be most welcome, I know the address to be 9 Nelson Road, Highcliffe. Winchester. If you have downloaded it into a file it should attach to a message board reply.

That`s it for now, happy researching.

William

Hi William

Further to my message yesterday, on re-reading your previous postings I realise I may have a 1911 Census transcript & image that I bought in error that could be helpful to you. I think it shows Olive Bassett aged 7 months in the household of Thomas Kitley in 9 Nelson

As the 1911 Beta version is no longer live, let me know if you would like them. (And also how I send them). Answering my own question yesterday, info from LM gives the answer. Alfred Ernest, before moving to Wyck was living in Upper Froyle.

Regards

David
I look forward to hearing if

Hi William,

Many thanks for your prompt response. Yes, quite a bit of the research from LM added to/confirmed what we had discovered. The Odey aspect was new to us and intriguing.

Were there any, now defunct, newspapers in the area in the period 1883-8? If there was any public interest story in the reason behind the name change, it might be worth investigating.

My late wife Marion was the daughter of Thomas William and Doris (née Barlow) Kitley. Thus our interest is on Alfred Ernest Kitley. Whilst I never met Esther Jane Kitley, I identify Alfred Ernest from the photographs. He was a bit younger than when I met him in about 1961.

We may have a little to add to you knowledge about Alfred Ernest. The story about the name change, from my father in law, was that Alfred Ernest had difficulty obtaining his birth certificate from his mother when seeking to join-up. That was the first indication he had of the name problem”.

Parts of the 1911 Census temporarily released on the 1911 website and we were fortunately able to trace Alfred Ernest Kitley living with his wife Esther Jane and sons George Alfred, Thomas William and Reginald Wilfred.

They were living at Oaktree Cottages, Wyck, Nr Alton Hants. They occupied a total of 5 rooms. Today there are still two cottages: No 1 & No 2. Both now carry the postcode GU34 3AH.

That postcode is also shared with close by Wyck Place. Wyck Place was the home of the Wickham family and passed on marriage to Sir Maurice and Lady (Charlotte) Bonham Carter.

Charlotte Bonham Carter (1893-1989) was Sister-in-Law and friend of Violet Bonham Carter, friend and confidant of the anti-fascist Mitford sister Jessica.

Jessica Mitford was the sister of Diana Mitford who married Sir Oswald Mosley, the leader of the British Union of Fascists.

Whether or not this fact weakens the allegation that Alfred & Esther were supporters of Sir Oswald perhaps we shall never know.

What is certain is that Esther was not a Black Shirt. The Black Shirts were the para-military wing of the BUF and were, I understand, exclusively male and reportedly thuggish.

I am making enquiries to find if the membership records of the BUF are in the public domain. As one whose professional life has, almost exclusively, been in the political world, this aspect interests me greatly.

It is said that“ Sussex" was a place that Alfred & Esther worked for Sir Oswald Mosley. Has any documentation been found? Mosley certainly organised BUF summer camps in Sussex in the 30s but Alfred & Esther must have been in Derby by then because their daughter Olive was born there in 1922.

Back though to Alfred Ernest. The 1911 census form was completed by the man himself. In it he records himself as "Horseman on Farm". A promotion from Ag Lab!

One intriguing question remains. Wyck is in the parish of Binsted Wyck. The Parish Church being the Church of the Holy Cross in Binsted. Alfred and Esther chose to have their children baptised in Upper Foyle - twice as far away.

If your researches yield anything further I do hope that you will post them.

Best Wishes

David
Hello DMS,
Welcome to the message board - Happy 2009.

Having read through your message it struck me that perhaps some of your information was acquired through LM, most of what you write I had researched the same myself and sent some info, including photographs and my own census templates to her as she was having no luck in tracing Alfred Kitley. His first names vary - birth registration as Alfred Charles Odey but in 1903 was married as Alfred Ernest Kitley.

The change of surname could well have been the result of a family dispute, I will be going to Chippenham - Wiltshire Record Office - to research the parish records of the Pewsey area, quite a number of the Odey family lived in the area, but constantly moved to follow employment. Local press reports are worth looking at too. The Odey's that you mention, Thomas Odey c1826; I have also researched only because I think that he may be the father of James Odey/Kitley - but not proved - because no marriage details have been discovered with his 'wife' Kate Olive Kennard. I have found absolutely no trace of her family to date. If I knew of her home area then maybe a Bishop's Allegations index may help discover a marriage. Incidently the parents of Thomas Odey are George and Harriet, both c 1791, see 1841 census.

In conclusion, I am not related to a William Ernest Smith from Matlock, the only link I have with Derbyshire would be Alfred Kitly, an elder brother of my late Grandmother Nellie Gertrude. So I will end with a query, your late wife was Marion Smith (Kitley) Who was her father - was it the same Kitley family as Alfred`s?

Good luck with your joint research.

William.

Hi Wm S

I am a new entrant to this message board though I have been in direct touch with, and received help from, LM who is the daughter in law of the aunt of my late wife Marion Smith Née Kitley.

When I refer to “we”, I mean myself and my son. He has the ideas and I, retired, have the time. My contribution is on two fields. Thomas Odey and the date of the name change.

I don’t know if you know of that branch of the Odey family but we have found a second family for Thomas Odey (b.1828 Stert).

His first wife Mary Odey née Davis, died in Oct/Dec 1870 he then married a widow, Ann North between July/Sept in 1871, acquiring, in the process, a step-son Frederick North. They had moved eventually to live in Peatling Magna near Lutterworth by the 1881 census. Having given birth to their son Job Odey,c1873 and their daughter Susanna Odey, c 1876 in Kingsland, Herefordshire.

Thomas Odey appears on the 1891 census in Peatling Magna with 2nd wife Ann and son Thomas Odey Jnr. (by 1st wife). They were also joined, by the time of the 1891 census by, Hannah Odey, his daughter by his first wife. (A trade directory in 1910 shows a Hannah Odey, Grazier, living in not too distant Kilsby)

Thomas Odey snr. is recorded on the 1901 census as living with his son Thomas Odey Jnr. and his daughter-in-law, Isabel, in Stockinford, Nuneaton. He died later that year.

We think that it is possible to narrow down the date of the name change.

Whilst appearing on the 1861, 1871 and 1881 censuses as James Odey (on the last, married to Kate Odey), he is listed on the 1891 census as James Kitley. His wife Kate is also named Kate Kitley.

The surname change must have occurred between the censuses of 1881 and 1891. Your Grandmother, Nellie Gertrude Kitley, was born in 1888, a daughter to James and Kate Kitley. That narrows the change down to between 1881 and 1888, There is further evidence in the birth, registered in April/June 1883, of Alfred Charles Odey. That looks very much like the entry as Alfred Kitley (aged 9) on the 1891 census
.
On that rationale, the re-naming of the family happened between 1883 and 1888. I would greatly welcome comments and criticism of our reasoning.

I wonder if the use of the phrase “Deed Poll” is really shorthand for “changed his name”. Deed Polls would have involved the expenditure of cash. Not a thing in great surplus for an Ag Lab!

One last query. You, William Smith, are not by any remote chance related to a William Ernest Smith (b 1903) from Matlock are you?

DMS
Hello again LM,

Have you had any further luck with your research into Alfred`s past? You did mention that you would check his D.O.B. from his death certificate - this can sometimes be incorrect. Can I suggest that you check the birth index for 1883, June quarter, Ref Pewsey 5A 171, there you will find Alfred Charles ODEY - I am sure that this is the person you want to trace, give it a try anyway. Good Luck! WS

Re: walter and arthur kitley

Dear Caroline

I was just browsing online this evening and came across a thread you placed on Ancestry.co.uk which completely caught my attention.

As you can see, my family name is Kitley and my ancestors came from Frome in Somerset. I have always wanted to trace my ancestry but have never had the time, but this evening I was drawn to make a search in Google and this is the result.

My grandfather was called Walter John Kiltey and his father was called Arthur - I suppose it is quite feasible that my grandfather took the name of his own grandfather. I remember my late great aunt telling me that Arthur left Frome when he was no more than a child and travelled to South Wales looking for employment in the mines. My family has lived here ever since.

My grandfather, Walter John, was one of five children - Anne, Emily, Alice, Ethel and, sadly, another son who died.

I have asked my father, Roy, who is now in his 70s to have a look through his photos / documents etc. to see if he has a birth certificate or anything which could shed some light on this and will let you know next weekend.

Do you mind me asking what relation Walter or Arthur are to you? This may be a coincidence but the timeframe seems about right as my grandfather was born in 1909.

I look forward to hearng from you

I have Kates details as been born in 1855 and died in 1942 making her 87.
I am the daughter of Joseph Homer Kitley who was the son of Orvil Joseph Kitley and Maude Simons Kitley. I have some information that was collected by Helen Kelly Ward, daughter of my great aunt Lilly. Let me know what details you'd like and I'd also enjoy seeing what you have already. I know that Great Uncle William's son Reginald also had a daugher named Kathey Kitley--high school friends always wanted to know who my new boyfriend was, as they had heard a song on the radio dedicated to Kathey Kitley and Boy....! I remember Great Aunt Doe (we all called her that) and Great Aunt Lilly. Nina and Fred Campbell once gave me a Spitz dog for my birthday. I'd enjoy learning more about my father's side of the family.

Hello LM,
Thanks for the reply to my queries, interesting about the `blackshirts`.
Attached is another picture I have, three children, written on the back their names L - R, Olive Bassett, Queen, Harry Bassett. Olive and Harry are brother and sister, Queen - real name Mary Alexandria Kitley is the daughter of Alfred`s eldest brother George Thomas, she later became a Mrs Spinney who in her later years moved to America. I know very little about this side of the Kitley family, Mary did have a brother Silas, I heard also that there may be another boy named Willoughby - but I cannot confirm this.
Kate`s husband James died - 28th September 1915 at 8 St Leonards Rd, Highcliffe Park, Winchester, Aged 68. A more likely age is closer to 64. Thats it for now, happy researching! William S.

Hello LM,
No further info to hand just yet, looking over your previous messages can I ask for info?
You gave Alfred`s d.o.b as 8 June 1883 at Bristol, is this proved with a certificate or hearsay from relatives?
You mention that Alfred & Esther worked for Oswald Moseley, "they were blackshirts" did this refer to Alfred and his wife or just the Mosely supporters?
Kate`s age? you say she died aged 87 no doubt gained from your info about her birth in 1855. Her death certificate (I have a copy) gives her age as 96 in 1942. I have never thought this to be right, ages given on the census(s) would suggest that she was born c1882 - but no record has so far been found. I am currently awaiting a birth certificate (Copy) for George Thomas Kitley (Odey) to confirm Kate`s maiden name, she may have changed that as well.
Trouble in the Odey family provoked the name change, there may be some reference in the local press at that time. I will be going to the local record office to research parish registers and newspapers - but not for a while yet I have several other family lines to research. Any other info that comes to mind please share it - much appreciated. Good Luck WS

Hello,
Thankyou for your last message, the use of deed poll to change a name from Odey to Kitley begs the question as to `why`? I will be returning to the Wiltshire Record Office so will look at some parish records of villages around Marlborough. Pictures of Alfred`s mother Kate Olive, I have two, one on her own, a second with two women behind her, on the left is Daisy later wife of Frederick Kitley - son of Fred who was Alfred`s older brother. On the right is Olive Mary (my mother) grand daughter of Kate Olive. The third picture I have sent is of Kate Olive, her daughter Nellie Gertrude, Nellie`s two chidren Harry Godfrey and Olive Mary (my mother) Hope these pictures reach you as I do not use this method usually - so hope it will work. So here`s hoping .....

Hello again,
Your picture received - thank you. It was taken in the rear garden of Alfred`s elder brothers (Harry) home in Gordon Avenue, Winchester, I recognised the background quite easily. I have done some more research this weekend and I have now discovered the Kitley family in 1881 - under the name of `Odey`, as a result I was able to locate the birth registrations of nearly all the children - except Alfred. I have put a couple of Word files on here, they are my own templates of census information - read the 1881 entry - the Odey family living at Milton, Wiltshire, they are the `missing` ones now found, more research will follow.
There were no inscriptions on the backs of the pictures I sent, but all were confirmed by my late mother as to who they were. Thats all for the moment..... WS

This info may be of use to you:- Brothers & sisters to George Thomas KITLEY;- HARRY, b c1877-Bristol, d 1948-Winchester. KATE ELLEN, b c1879-Bristol, d 1954-Hampshire.FRED, b c1880-Bristol. MARY, b c1881-Marlborough, d 1903-Southampton. ALFRED, b c1883-Bristol. Nellie Gertrude, b 1888-Sutton Veny, Wiltshire. (She is my G/Mother(M). Their parents are JAMES THOMAS KITLEY, b c1851-Marlborough, Wilts, d 28.09.1915-Winchester. OLIVE KATE KITLEY (formerly KENNARD) b c1855-Bristol, d 09.02.1942-Winchester. Apart from the last two and Nellie Gertrude I have never been able to find any birth or marriage details of their parents. I would be very interested to know how you knew the actual birthday of George Thomas. Try looking at the 1891 Census for Warminster, Public Record Office reference:- RG12/1609, sheet 168, most of the family can be found at No. 25 Pound St. Find George on PRO Ref RG12/1928 Sheet 39, Page 23 at 35 Tyning Bottom Row Radstock. Also in the 1901 census find George in PRO Ref RG13/1998, Sheet 148, Page 13, listed as a crew member of HMS Anson, thats the best i can do to assist, any info you have on the Kitleys - then I`m holding my breath. Good Luck.

Are you able to clarify how George Thomas Kitley`s actual date of birth is known? as it would seem that his birth was ever registered. the marriage of his parents is not recorded over a span of 25 years that I searched, they may have beeb non-conformists, there may also have been an Irish connection with Kate Olive Kitley (nee Kennard). George Thomas Kitley married Rose Andrews on 04.05.1907 St Martins Church, Winchester.

Your reply to mine was appreciated. Re: your husband`s grandfather Alfred Kitley, census details that he was born in Bristol. I last found details of him in the 1901 census when he lived in Winchester, Hants. He was in lodgings together with his elder brother Harry, Alfred`s age was given as being 18 and his occupation was given as a Labourer (Carter Farm). I understand that he married a local girl named Esther Reed (or surname variant). Alfred`s second name is given as Ernest. The marriage is registered in the Sep quarter of 1903 Ref No. - Vol 2c Page 286 at Winchester. Your other comment about a possible name change, this has been told to me also, the name of `Oddie` or variant spelling has been mentioned to me by Alfred`s nephew Frederick Kitley (Dec`d). Alfred`s mother Kate died in 1942, buried at St Andrews Church, Chilcombe, just outside of Winchester, the curate taking the funeral service was a Rev. Oddie.... could it be that Kate was educated in a convent as she was well taught in both reading and writing. Two years later Alfred`s eldest brother George died and was buried in his mothers grave - Alfred was present. A strange arrangement as Kate`s husband was buried many years previously in another location. Any further info you have about Alfred would be appreciated.

Hello Imoss4,
Thankyou for Alfred`s d.o.b. info, your reply confirmed that I was onto the right Alfred, I knew that he lived in Derby and that he was in the police force. Further Kitley information is sparse as in the early years James and Kate Kitley kept a secretive profile, as I can find no certification of their marriage nor the birth registration of any offspring - except one, the youngest sister of Alfred`s - Nellie Gertrude (my grandmother (M). From her birth certificate her mother`s maiden name is given as Kennard, but I have never discovered a marriage entry of Alfred`s parents. There was a large collection of Kitley`s living in the Heytesbury area of Wiltshire, but no connection was discovered, James Thomas Kitley (Alfred`s father) was born at Marlborough, Wiltshire - in that same area there is a collection of Odey families - any connection - I wonder. I do have one fairly good photograph of Kate Olive Kitley (Alfred`s mother) clearly wearing a wedding ring. Do you have any photographs of Alfred`s parents at all? Kate Olive Kennard used to sing to her family, she looked after a number of her grandchildren who were made homeless, she used to sing mainly Irish songs so I was told, her father could have been a stonemason. Thats about it, I have searched many records in the Bristol area without any worthwhile success so, like you, any information is welcomed. Good Luck.
