It is almost a decade later and a bit late as to this post, but we have information on someone of the right name and age to be this lady, but with insufficient basis to connect the two with reasonable certainty. (That is really the case for most ancient connections and their branches, particularly for those with more common surnames.)

We have a large ancestry.com MyFamily archives available for all Kittrell descendants, private by invitation and free, just write to the name at gmail.com with each word separated by dots "." with a specific request and details.

I would be interested in hearing from anyone relative of Bessie Kittrell to see if she belongs to our tree, which is claimed to be the largest collected Kittrell family out there.

I am not from N.C, my grandfather relocated to Washington, DC after being married and fathering two other sons one who name is Charles. I'm not sure when my grandfather moved to DC but I do know that he worked as a barber and owned a barber shop in the city. Do you have any pictures of your father or his siblings, maybe there is a resemblance. Also what were your grandparents name?
Thanks in advance for any information

I don't have too much information on my family, but I do know that my grandfather (Saul Joseph Kittrell,Sr.) was born in North Carolina. He later relocated to Washington,DC after divorcing his wife. I know that he fathered a son named James Kittrell. My father is named after my grandfather. I am looking for any information on my family. I have found out that a small town in North Carolina is named after my family
Whatever if any information you have please send me

Thank You so much

James Kittrell, born 1874 in TN to Francis Marion and Sarah Kittrell, married Ida Leona Brixey in Wright/Webster County, MO in the early 1890s. They had three children, Garrett, Granville and Bertha. Ida passed away in 1904. James left MO just before or after her death, leaving the children to be raised by maternal relatives. Garrett Buttram Kittrell is my grandfather.

I am looking for any information on Great Grandpa James after he left MO. I would like to know if he remarried or what happened to him.

Thanks so much.

The Catherall claim came from a genealogist in the 1930s ( I believe) who did some work for a member of the Kittrell family in Tennessee. I have no idea where her info came from. Was there a Dutton Catherall involved? Her files were donated to the archive in Franklin TN.

Anyhow..any DAR lines established on George (married to Mary Rhodes) son of Jonathan?

Hi! Long time no "see". Your verbosity continues to astound me.! It's not that at the tender age of 59 I can't carry on an intelligent conversation, however, knowing your background you must have been stunning in your job and a master debater.!!The past yr. was not conducive for geneolgical research. I haven't even opened any of my sites or folders for months until last night. I have a new laptop and in the wee hours of this morning I was able to work on my Braxton line. Martha Jane Braxton was married to William Craven Kittrell, son of CravenII ? There's been so many new names I suspect our "newbies" have no idea the thousands of hours you've dedicated to this site as well as our private site. The internet has opened up a whole new world of information that frequently is totally incorrect. I discovered in my Native American research many of the people I was working with were never descended from just a "plain old Indian". They usually claimed to be descendants of Indian princesses' or chiefs. I have found many errors in some of my sites that I know first hand is incorrect. I was working on my Bowden line. Five children are listed. One is named Dell, listed as a male. Guess what? Dell was my grandmother and even after contacting the site owner they wouldn't change it. Anyway, long story short, document, document, document. Keep up the good work.
Willa

Willa,
I am not sure if I am to be insulted or complimented or merely just silenced: for verbosity is included in the last reply but hardly in the original post. But let me be lulled into believing it is a compliment for you have taken my several torches and displayed them well.

Many who post are so pompous as to never correct their errors even when the error is one of gender (prior to transgendered uncertainties). Many who research jump at the chance to descend from the chief or his daughter Pocahontas or Little Feather or whomever without much care as to how hard it will be disprove this as person after person adopts it nearly irrevocably.

But most of all the all-encompassing torch, and I will stop here and still be overdoing it, we both know that the key is to never ever say anything in absolute terms until you have it well-documented, or, and here I eagerly quote you:

"document, document, document. Keep up the good work", Willa.

with a minor change in punctuation.

[Google me and listen to a video or ten and then you will hear repetition of the same horrendous theme.]

There are undocumented claims as to that by the majority of those who post on Kittrells. Many claim the information comes from family records when asked their source.

Your "understand"-ing is similar in that I know not if you have the documentation, but I can highly suspect that you do not.

I do have perfect documentation to make it possible that the Kittrells of America descended from a certain man and woman neither of whom used the name Catherall but who were married under the same name as the Kittrells utilized early in America in the first and some of the next entries in documented instances of its occurrenct in America.

I would love for there to be documentation for this "family lore" from "family records" but I truly doubt that there ever will be such documentation of our Kittrells changing from Catheral. It will be hard enough to get any one or two of the posters to explain the true source of their claimed family records, an uncle or aunt or such or maybe a far back Kittrell ancestor. All this being said the general claim that Kittrell could have been Catheral makes sense as a possible source of the name for some if not all of those English persons bearing the name, but is highly unlikely for those who came from France, Germany, Austria and Switzerland into America who also bore the surname that they spelled Kittrell.

But really let's start a new undocumented transition of Kittrell from Kettlewell, such as was done by the folks at

http://www.4crests.com/kittrell-coat-of-arms.html

or that they are truly and most certainly from and only from the family of Austrians for which this site thinks most of us American Kittrells (a large majority obtaining their name through some descent, marital relationship or other association with a descendant of Jonathan Kittrell of northeastern North Carolina being born somewhere unknown in probably the 1680's (England is top on the list) and dying somewhere unprovable in the 1740's (the area that became Gates County, North Carolina is top on the list):

http://www.houseofnames.com/xq/asp.fc/qx/kittrell-family-cre...

or the surprise one you can buy through

http://www.family-crests.com/index.asp?ID=167&PageAction...

or this place with the likely web address of:

http://www.5dollarcoatsofarms.com/surnames/surnames_k.html

or this one merely described for the Austrian surname with the same spelling:

http://www.historicalnames.com/namelistdetail_k.asp?surname=...

There are few of the medieval families entitled to a coat of arms, in any country but that is now changed as demonstrated above despite the clear historic past and current limitations on coats of arms.

Learn more about the limited universe of those allowed a coat of arms at:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coat_of_Arms

and then rather than pay real money for a coat of arms that most likely, if you are an American Kittrell at least, jas no relationship to you, go to the cited site at the wiki article and make one of your own (courtesy of the folks at the Victoria and Albert Museum, yes that Victoria and that Albert):

http://www.vam.ac.uk/collections/british_galls/do_online/coa...

That did not answer your question for you did not state one, but it did elaborate on any understanding as to the Kittrell of most of the Kittrells of America. To summarize with less diplomacy, there is so much rubbish out there parading as research these days [and just as much so relatively for the past millenium since the Scottish, Irish and English kings, or some of them who wanted to prove their regal prominence, had their ancestries traced back to Adam (and Eve) and recorded in Latin, a language that they could not read in almost all cases] that one truly must be prepared to discard any family ancestral connection claimed by something in print, and if publishing should state, that which is documented to a tee or merely by a modicum or by nothing, and that which is totally provable to be false.

But still let it not be failed to be written, that some Kittrell male line ancestors for some Kittrells of the world, may have been Catherals and even our Jonathan's male lineage may include a string or one or two consecutive Catherals, but "may" is a very imprecise word and as used here makes for a very weak claim.

Clearly the Cox marriage may be in error, but without any way of checking it, just consider it a weak claim. It is remotely possible that there was a Cox then a Geddis then a third marriage, but really not too likely. It may have been some other Mary or Mary Ann Wright, but it is not traceable by what we have.

As to your Mary Ann Wright, I am sure you have enough direct or circumstantial evidence that she was Cary's daughter but deeds, such as those you have collected, and probate are needed for those who lived during the pre-1850 census era and sometimes it is from deeds after 1850 or probates of such persons who die even after 1850 that a solution to who is the next prior ancestor found.

Keep researching but due to our many lines we merely engage in collecting which is not near so revealing as true genealogical research.

As noted, Kittrell descendants are welcome to obtain an invite to the MyFamily site for this family. There are currently more than two hundred descendants and/or spouses who have joined the free but quite private site. Just write to the address for Kittrells of America at gmail.com, with or without dots in between the words, with your relationship for more details. Even if you have no interest in the Kittrell site, you may write there to ask questions on ancient American Kittrells.

As to Cary/Cara/Caroline Kittrell Wright, no original research has been done on this putative Jonathan Kittrell branch. It seems reasonably certain the lady fits somewhere as a descendant of Jonathan the only known source for Kittrells of America in that region and for the State of North Carolina at that time. I can only suggest that like many pioneer branches in many pioneer families there are no certain links to the prior generation and not much at all on her child Mary Ann Wright, and absolutely nothing on her documented, but her birth date was given by one researcher as 10 April 1818 in Rowan County, North Carolina and her husband as a John Cox and that is it. No other marriages were known. Thus tracing her proved impossible.

Is this your Mary Ann Wright?

As to ancestors of Cara/Cary/Caroline Kittrell, I can speculate but proving my speculation is ponderous, incomplete in any case and not in a form ready for prime time. Much is done by deduction and drawing weak conclusions, but all that is currently available. Suffice it to say there is every reason to believe the lady is a Jonathan Kittrell descendant, but one whose parents may be speculated upon over a few with unclaimed positions as daughters until more precise data can be found. Kara does seem most likely to be a Kittrell since North Carolina counties were the main migration area of the eastern North Carolina Kittrells originally and we find no male Kittrells in North Carolina at the time who appear to be other than children and grandchildren and great grandchildren of Jonathan Kittrell.

The name Kittrell both in North Carolina, and throughout all America, at the time is unique enough to assist in such placements based on weak evidence. We have created a private tree of over 36,000 Kittrell descendants and spouses descending from Jonathan Kittrell, but some may be placed on the wrong branch and certainly we are open to showing that some belong elsewhere with some other unknown Kittrell progenitor. But the tree is the potential descendants of this man, for only comprehensive DNA testing could prove the certainty of any descent for anyone and their putative ancestor.

Much of the research relies upon the trees and information provided by others. Thus documentation is more likely than not to be lacking until obtained over time. As to Kara Kittrell or Cary Kittrell, I imagine there are several trees at rootsweb.com which include her and over the past decade many others which were posted and then withdrawn. These and the rest of the www and our members are the primary sources, but that does include the censuses through 1930 which further shows how few of the surname Kittrell did not obtain their surname through one of Jonathan Kittrell's descendants, who spread throughout the south and west and a few to the north early on and later.

I hope this gives you a clearer picture of what little we have on the documentation for this branch. More can be found most probably in real estate and probate records from the appropriate counties which are not all necessarily known at present, and which in any event are not reachable readily by me.

We have much collected on this at our site. If you are a Kittrell descendant write to the site gmail at Kittrells.of.America and identify and come see all that we have. You may enjoy seeing the other Kittrells if you are a Kittrell, but who knows.

Dutton Catheral is what the lady wrote and the entire work has been transcribed into the public net it seems by Kittrell Kin at http://genforum.genealogy.com/kittrell. The problem is no one has anything new, people keep copying her claims and accepting it as proven, yet there are many reasons to suspect that the claim is suspect. But who knows.

As to George this is not my line and I have nothing on it. However we have a large membership of descendants from George, several of whom do independent research. One of them may have something they will share with near cousins. I do not know of anything but who knows.

Have the man write to me, either through you or at his local library. Gmail is easy to obtain free and is the best as it is Google.

Obituaries are hard to find of those dying in the internet age but impossible for many other eras absent the best of good fortune.

I did not have the man with a W. but as a result of the other post I found him, but we have no obituary and no truly personal information only some of his descendants and his Kittrell lineage.

We have nothing on George Kittrell, but I must suggest you try internet maps which can be more complete than state road maps.

You will find an Akins, Georgia, a small unincorporated community, in a county other than Laurens which seems to be what you were suggesting, at http://maps.yahoo.com/ as well as at http://maps.google.com/ .

I would send you the page address, but the page addresses do not include the map scene information on either site anymore so just enter village and state and look and see that they give you the same place. Hopefully this is the same place to which you referred.

I am not a descendant of Kittrell's, (that I know of), but am helping an acquaintance do research on his Kittrell line. He is trying to locate his father who died in Texas. He is unable to find him in the obituaries and has no further information on his death. His father's name is James "W" Kittrell, who supposedly died abt. 1956 in Fort Worth Texas. Would this be a site that would be of any interest to him?

I wish you taught on-line classes! I am a novice researcher at best and know the importance of proper documentation but am very ignorant to the whole research process when it comes to finding that documentation. Thanks for posting and inspiring me to learn more about the correct way to find and document sources.

Regards,

Lisa

Hello. I just received a letter that indicates Mary Ann Wright did, in fact, marry a Mr. Geddis, at the age of 15. The information was obtained from a letter written by her granddaughter, who knew Mary Ann Wright Varker personally. Her second husband (and last) was to Thomas Varker, who was killed in a mining accident in 1854, some 13 years after their marriage in Davidson County.

There was never a Mr. Cox married to Mary Ann Wright.

Regards,
Shirley Varker Gragg
GGD of Thomas and Mary Ann Wright Geddis Varker.
Hello. I hope you can help me. I just saw a site "List of early descendants of Jonathan Kittrell, flourished 1704-1740's northeastern NC area" in which my Great-grandmother, MARY ANN WRIGHT (COX), daughter of Caroline Kittrell was listed.

It is extremely important that I contact the person who has information on her marriage to this Mr. COX. I have no record, nor does NC have a record of her marriage to this gentleman.

I know that there were more than several Mary Ann Wright's in the same family, and there may be an error in the thought that it was Richard Wright, Jr. and Caroline Kittrell's daughter. I just would like to know for sure.

You see, Mary Ann Wright, daughter of Caroline (Cary) Kittrell and Richard Wright, JR. was my Great-grandmother. She married Thomas Varker of Cornwall, England in 1842 and they had 6 children. Thomas was killed in a mine explosion in Mecklenburg County, NC in 1854. Mary Ann never remarried.

Regards,
Shirley Varker Gragg
Fredericksburg, VA

PLEASE, contact me. You have Mary Ann Wright COX listed as daughter to Caroline* Kittrell Wright "Cary" K.

Mary Ann is my Great-grandmother. It is very important that I know about this Mr. COX and when they were married.

Any information you can provide will be GREATLY appreciated.

Shirley Varker Gragg
Fredericksburg, VA

Thank you SO MUCH for your response. A lot of information here and I truly appreciate it, because you've given me more than I had on Cary.

As to Mary Ann Wright being mine, the answer is yes.

Several years ago, I became aware of a land sale deed in which she sole approximately 311 acres, but no one seemed to know where. Finally, seeing as how she (Mary Ann Varker) appeared to have lived most of her life in Davidson County, NC, I wrote to the Register of Deeds there and he found the deed. I purchased a copy, not knowing what to expect. It was only then, when I saw not only her name (Mary Ann Varker), but that of my Great-grandfather Thomas Varker. I realized, upon research, that she had 11 brothers and sisters and 12 half-brothers/sisters. The names of her brothers were listed, all decendants from Richard Wright, Jr. and Cary (spelled as shown in his will).

A bit of history. On the marriage bond I have, Mary Ann's last name was given as GEDDIS and for years I thought that was her maiden name. I still don't know where that came from - if she had been married before 1842 (she would have been 24 years of age when she married Thomas Varker and a bit old for those times and a first marriage).

My GGF Thomas was killed in 1854 in a mine explosion in Mecklenburg Co., NC, and Mary Ann was embroiled in a contested estate that went all the way to the NC Supreme Court. She gave witness of her her maiden name as WRIGHT (not Geddis).

While I still have interest in the Kittrell line, it was the information I have seen posted on several sites that Mary Ann supposedly was married to a COX. When I saw your posting on this, I just wanted to know how that information came about.

In researching the Wright family, I have several 'vanity' books I think they're called. None of them give any information regarding Mary Ann's marriage(s) to anyone. If it will assist your research, I would be glad to provide you the information I've collected over the past few years regarding my Great-grandmother. You can contact me at gragg02@comcast.net. That way, I can do a family file for her and send it to you as an attachment.

Again, I really appreciate your response.

Regards,
Shirley

Thank you again. I appreciate the information and will consider the Cox issue as an error to 'my Mary Ann'. Both just before, during and right after her birth (most generally accepted as Oct 1818) there are a lot of Mary Ann Wright's, so it's entirely possible that it may be another Mary Ann Wright who did marry a Cox, just not my GGM.

Really strange thing is no record for her and a Geddis, either.

Regards,
Shirley
