drowned at sea

on tuesday afternoon mr coroner settle held an inquest at the royal hotel, west hartlepool, on the body of hugo albert otto klemm (14), one of the crew of the schooner orion, of rougenwalde. it appeared that the vessel was on her way to england, laden with deals, when about 120 east of tynemouth, the boy went to the lee-side of the vessel to draw a bucket of sea water. in doing so he lost hold of the pail, and made an effort to recover it, causing himself to over-balance and fall headforemost into the sea. as the vessel was then under canvas, some delay took place before she could be stopped. the body was not recovered till half an hour afterwards, when life was found to be extinct. a verdict of 'accidently drowned at sea' was returned.
